How would an artist find someone to work with who has a game with some kind of a story/lore, and doesn't give up within 2 weeks?

or wait until they've finished the game and it just needs art slapped on, and then only if you sign a contract giving them rights to all your work if you flake before release

I think most people here find that artists seem to give up faster then programmers so giving up after 2 weeks shouldn't be too much of a problem

If your art is good enough you should be able to post it asking to work with someone and you can pick from the people wanting to work with you

No one will take you seriously unless you post your artwork though
>>
>>154820286
Why?
>>
>>154820486
The programmer doesn't "own" the game if other people worked on it

If it's your art in the game that art still belongs to you unless he/she pays for the rights of it. In the same sense the programing belongs to the programmer unless you paid for it.

Later I told my buddies who had done some gayboy gamedev course at Uni and they asked "Was that Spaniardguy? Yeah he's a huge cunt".

Turns out he didnt even contact the artist to ask where the work was, and he hadn't actually paid him yet, despite the agreement stating that 75% of the funds would be paid up front.

I really need to git gud at coding. My rpg design beliefs are finely honed from decades of playing rpgs.

>used to go to mall with my mom and my brother, I was 5 and he was 8.
>she would leave us at wizards of the coast while she bought clothes and shit.
>somehow me and my brother decided to try and get D&D 3rd edition instead of pokemon cards or magic cards.
>store manager was a bro and helped convince our mother with us (probably just wanted to sell the books desu)
>My brother made me DM
>I was DMing at the age of 5
>I still have old yellow ass D&D DM notes from back then which have a bunch of spelling mistakes that were written on a legal pad.

Here's how I'd do it.

Instead of being hard locked into classes. I'd have a system where you buy
Skills
Traits
Attributes

Classes would be like purchasing a skillpath that unlock a group of traits that required a prerequisite of Skills, Traits, and Attributes.

For example the "Paladin" might be a hidden class requiring these prerequisites
- A melee combat weapon skill at rank 6
- heavy armor proficiency
- shield proficiency
- a charisma of 15
- a constitution of 14
- a strength of 14
- a wisdom of 12
- a intelligence of 12
- A set amount of lawful and good acts (recorded from decisions during dialogue and quests)
- A set amount of piety, gained from praying, doing deeds for a church, reading holy texts etc
- A hidden "Selfless Act of Heroism" These could be tagged for certain quest choices. Performing a selfless act of heroism would unhide the class so you could see the other prerequisites

The paladin class could be bought for an amount of exp and then you could buy paladin only traits like
- Hit Dice d10 rank 1 - 20
- Aura of Courage ranks 1 - 10
- Lay on Hands ranks 1 -10
- Divine Health [disease]
- Divine Health [poison]
- Divine Health [corruption]

Some traits are flat, others have scaling ranks. But the class itself would never force abilities on you that you don't want, not even a classes hp.

Kinda progress. Setting up my actor parents and children for easy use in both setting up the bases and no fuss when players are constructing them. I still feel I could make this thing tighter.

Pic is the lightswitch. Spawns amounts of lights as defined when dragged into the level and the necessary variables are public so that my room BP can update them if a player adds or destroys a light. Will replace the transform and spawn with a mesh to match so that even if they are deactivated in the event graph player still see where they are.

If you were talking about "I'm going to have an action RPG with hundreds of weapon styles and animations for each society and race" that would be ideaguying.

The stuff I was talking about you could literally just have like, a dictionary object with <string id, trait trait>

the trait class could be as simple as
int currentRank
int maxRank
string name

gameplay would just involve checking the list in player for if he had a trait or not.

You can't compare $100 usd to 300 brl. Shit is more expensive in Brasil, especially in regards to entertainment. The biggest benefit of living in brasil is the average apartment is fucking cheap as hell.

Rent/mortgage being a huge factor of cost of living (You also live in California so you're like triple fucked because everything there is hell). However any place that is decently nice and cheap is filled with the worst people and you will probably get robbed every single day unless you find an apartment in like the nice area of Poços de Caldas.

More importantly away from this rant, why are you living in California if you're a freelancer. Get the fuck out of California.
>>
>>154825139
Best approach in my opinion is only have serverside what you really need, or what can fuck the game if players manages to edit it. Everything else clientside. You kinda have to get a balance between them to avoid having everything server side because is unpractical as fuck or having everything client side and allow everyone to cheat the fuck out of it.

What's the point of visual scripting?

It is supposed to make it easier for your artists to code?
Because your artists shouldn't be coding in the first place. And if you seriously are lacking in programmers the basic logic of programming stays the same regardless of whether it's visual or not. So it's not like it matters.

It's much faster to write code than it is to place and connect node. It's also much more readable than your spaghetti.

They could've spend the time designing blueprints on creating a good scripting language with a good IDE and debugging tools.

Made it so you can aim up and down, it's almost all works with the inverse kinematics stuff in Unity so it's not using animations looking up and down. Also this way it should be easier to make more different weapons.
>>
>>154826936

basic weapon has infinite ammo, dps is mostly about the same across all weapons. keywords add utility, but lower overall damage and ammo, so say, a 'triple' keyword can deal with over 100% of overall damage - but only if all shots connect, so, up close mostly.

also you're limited to whatever weapon you're carrying, switching to other weapons recovers health though.

I need some advice, finally decided to implement state machines into my project to make things easier (Gamemaker), I don't understand how they work currently and I'm trying to mess with them, if my game's turnbased I would probably need Overworld, Menu and Battle states and the Battle state would have to be divided into more states but I don't really get how it all works so I dunno which ones. Maybe PlayerTurn and EnemyTurn states? Would this work for multiple player characters/enemies, when would I determine turn order, while initializing the battle? All this is just me rambling because I have no state machine code right now, I'm just trying to make a flowchart until I get home so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just need them to take care of my turn order, anon. I get the idea behind them but I'm new to gamemaker, this is just practice for me, I'm not really aiming to make a game on my first try.
As a sidenote, I get how state machines work on a single object in, for example, a platformer game. Have different states for walking, standing, jumping, falling etc, can't figure out how to apply all that to an RPG game though because I don't understand the logic behind them - or behind RPG games, after all.

Discovered out trying to highlight sprites might be a pain in the ass. From google a lot of people recommended just making a highlighted version of each sprite and having it switch in and out according.

Whoever joins the lobby first is the owner and only he can start the game.
Players can vote to change/kick the owner so the owner can't afk in the lobby.

Or

There is no lobby owner, when enough players join, the game starts.
This means annoying countdowns since the game supports between 2 and 12 people, and if 2 people join the lobby, you want to give the remaining 10 people time to join.

Which one is better?

The 1:1 version, its pretty clear that there are single row sprites. Just because the hands and some of the hair have fatter blocks doesn't make it mixels. It might not look as good, buts it's not a mixel. Also, scaling to 300%.... who does this?

This. Still fucking ugly, and the color pallete you choose is horrible beyond any kind of possible redemption, but if you invest a little bit of time trying to draw shapes and shadows with the pixels instead of drawing squares everywhere you can get something more pleasant to look at, or at least, more readable.

>>
>>154833403
>probably hence why the crappy "mixels"
There are no mixels in your original image, I created those mixel images by scaling them with photoshop.
Mixels are that blurry effect that happens when the software you're scaling with tries to blend pixels together using AA. Paint only does this when scaling down, so if you scale up with paint you will never, ever have mixels. Those you have absolutely no idea what they're talking about and are just regurgitating memes.

>>
>>154834581
SNES did pixel perfect rotation, meaning that it tries to calculate a rotation for the sprite while fitting to the available pixel grid.

What that picture illustrated was having pixels rotated at 45 degree angle, somehow adding triangles to the available grid.

>>
>>154834581
sprite rotation on snes was very rare because for sprites it had to be done mostly with an aid of external chips; mode 7 rotation was seen pretty often though
what you see described as rixels could be called an extension of mixels, where a single unit within a sprite obviously covers more than one actual pixel, except now it's combined with sprite rotation, which results in user being able to clearly discern between rotated squares

i know that some people on discord meme against not using mixels/rixels in retro-stylized games, but they overlook the fact that when they do it, they lose the stylistic accuracy and become the nu-retro many players have already come to hate
the general solution for sprites if you don't like the artifacts that come from using rotated sprites without bumping up the sprite size is to either prepare your sprite specifically in order to reduce the artifacts or to just handdraw the needed rotated frames

> "Mixel" is a term AGDG made up to describe a specific phenomenon.

Mixel is a term digital imagery that refers to artifacts produced when software tries to create an intermediate value based on two original values, either because the pixel resolution is too large to capture the original colour difference (downscaling and real world image capture) or when anti-aliasing is used to soften pixels during upscaling.
This is the actual definition of mixel and was always the definition used on AGDG until dumb cunts like you came along.

Your newfag version of mixel doesn't even make sense.

It's really the only way to do sprite rotation on something like a SNES without having to hand draw all the possible rotations.

One example I know is that Worms 2/Armageddon/World Party actually have separate sprites for each possible rotation of the weapons.
>>

>>
>>154835691
left click I assume selects the unit? Only real solutions I can think of are:
key+mouse2
mouse1+mouse2
mouse3 (hold down middle mouse and move mouse to move).
mouse2 (holding it down allows you to turn the camera but this comes with the issue that your unit will move unless you make the unit move on release and not down).

>>154835842
would be better described by the term "betwixels" (betwixt and pixels). Mixels just sounds like it describes mixed pixel sizes.
>>
>>154835640
it makes sense, considering they didn't have the resolution to do otherwise. It's a think that only snes did, isn't it?
>>
>>154835979
Yeah, it's because SNES resolution is like 256x224 or 256x240. Additionally, due to palette restrictions they obviously couldn't have automatic anti-aliasing to smooth things out.

However, some modern devs today use a higher internal resolution, while still presenting something akin to what SNES displayed. This then allows the game to smoothly rotate sprites without any jaggies. Some people like this, some don't.

Is due to the way pixels work. It will happen at any resolution as long as you are working at 1x1 and then scaling everything up, wich is the proper way to work with small sized graphics.
>>
>>154836238
It's not mixels because it's not misaligned. Some parts are just lower-detail than others. You can see the resolution of the armor being shared by the eyes and cheeks

Beyond that I'm going to say that this is a terrible trailer for a RPG maker like video game.

The problem is most people who are into rpg maker like games would be looking for good story elements more than the rpg battle sequences. So, your trailer should generally focus on what's unique about your story.

A lot of people weren't very good help.
In engine, just draw the sprite four times colored in the highlight color with each one offset in a certain direction, then draw the proper colored sprite.
>>
>>154829383
a trick to "highlight" them could be to make an invisible cursor that cycles from enemy to enemy as you press left and right.
When the cursor is on an enemy, the game creates a copy of said enemy sprite with a monocromatic filter applied on it and opacity set to 30% or something. As you move the cursor destroy said sprite.
If you want to highlight them with an outline the solution might be similar: when the invisible cursor is on an enemy, you create a clone of its sprite beneath it, with the same monocromatic filter applied on it, and this time 1.2 times its original size. Of course the pivot must be at the exact center of the sprite. This will give you a nice outline effect that follows perfectly the shape of the selected enemy. As always, when you move away the cursor destroy said sprite.

Every single person who gave you advice is retarded.

Graphics are rendered with Shaders. Use the Shader to highlight them. Even if you never write shader code it's just calling a single mix function with a color value.

To be honest, I have mixed feelings about statements like that since I've started getting into it. I mean, I'm sure it will be more clear when I'm more into it, but I hardly believe that it could be any easier than simply using one function to render a part of an image. I mean, all those buffers and shaders.

If all you want is plain square sprites on the screen with alpha blending and no fancy effects it's like a few hundred lines of code tops. All you do is load sprites into textures and render them on quads using simple as fuck shaders. In return you gain a lot of flexibility in the future since you can add more complex shaders and such which is harder to do if your basic system is in SDL.

"Really" easy is maybe an overstatement but it's certainly not hard if you just follow a tutorial like learnopengl.com.

Using Vulkan for this shit on the other hand is a pain in the ass, I've written 1k LOC of Vulkan shit already and all it does is clear the screen to a set color.
>>
>>154840701

>>
>>154839936
Yeah but that only would happen if you are working at a high resolution with small sprites upscaled in the first place, and then you decide to scale a sprite x2 and the other x3. If you are working at 1x1 resolution and then upscale everything on the screen you don't risk having mixels or missaligned stuff.

I've been writing a renderer using OpenGL 2.1, honestly, it isn't that hard. If you know some basic math (and hopefully trigonometry) everything just comes together.
Research how the GPU handles things. Look at the OpenGL wiki and http://docs.gl/ -- they will help you a lot.

That is not elitism either. It's deprecated and worthless whilst hiding all meaningful functionality from you.
>>

>It's deprecated...whilst hiding all meaningful functionality from you.
You mean like OpenGL in general? OpenGL is obviously still worth it because Vulkan doesn't have the platform support. But if you're not actually using any of the programmable pipeline features for a god damn 2D game, why not use the FFP?

The way I see it, "talent" is actually referring to those who have thought processes/the ability to absorb material more naturally than those who read up on more analytical shit like art anatomy or music theory.

That said, even those who are "talented" can benefit from being aware of the analytical shit, but the most creative stuff, in my opinion (which is also rather subjective), happens subconsciously and more likely to happen for those who have the ability to feel out situations. Someone who is more analytical can achieve this through more experience/experimentation (SELF experimentation, not so much reading/doing shit by the book) but may just take them more time than someone who already "had it to begin with".

I am wondering how hit detection for hitting enemies is done in the first RE titles.

I made a diagram kinda how I imagine it, since a raycast from the gun barrel straight ahead the player sounds too finicky to be functional with fixed camera angles and tank controls.

Not sure this belongs in this thread, as I have doubts not about game design or making but sort of unrelated legal stuff.

Let's say I wanted to make a game with a character that resembles an existed, copyrighted one. Pic related is a good example. It's clearly influenced by Pikachu, but at the same time it is not Pikachu.

How legal is that? I guess you can get sued even if it's legal. What would be the best way to approach something like this?

could keep track of all enemies on screen, then check the dot product between the player's forward vector and the vector between the player and enemies. that pretty much simulates a cone, then just loop over the enemies within the cone and check the distance.
sounds kinda complicated but it's just something like:
scopez = dot(transform.forward, normalize(enemy position - player.position) )
incone = (scopes>gunspread) ? true : false
gunspread = sin(angle of the cone)

or just capsulecast and hope no one notices

It's kind of a shitty file reading algorithm you've got going there also but maybe that's not a priority now, but you should use std::stringstream instead of +ing onto a string all the time.

Does anyone know where I can find some good resources on coding basic 2d physics? Or maybe just a good lead on vector math and implementation?

Imagine you have 3 weapons(maybe not from the start) and you can switch to them at any time.
Now imagine every mob you fight needs to be taken down differently.
Say, skellies with a hammer, while goblins with a sword.
Now imagine, there's mobs that require combinations of different attacks, imagine a game where you actually have to think while attacking instead of mashing one button.
Would you play a metroidvania like that? Asssuming the combat is fluid and dank.

All those posts are from the same bored asshole. He comes in here, makes a "progress haha :)" post (always drawing on the same handful of images) and then replies to himself dozens of times while roleplaying as hateful bullies. Any time you see a post with hundreds of redundant quotation marks, or lines like "Did you think this was okay? Why is this allowed?" or some comment about how people should be murdered for making subpar games, it's all from that same guy.

Reporting his posts helps... a little bit. He's a chronic ban evader with seven proxies and way too much energy for crimes, and he keeps coming back here no matter how many times the mods fuck him up.

pls be joking. The fast inverse square root was written by John Carmack.
>>
>>154857561
You mean like "One one-thousand, Two one-thousand, Three one-thousand..."

Or like when a guy is doing some pushups and a cute girl walks by and he starts adding 1000 like "...two...three...four..." <girl walks closeby> "...one thousand five...one thousand six....one thousand seven...."

~

The first one is counting seconds. So when you're at one second and you want to move toe the scond and third seconds, you don't want to say it too fast because seconds aren't so fast. You don't want to say "Onetwothreefourfive..." because you're counting too fast. So you make it more accurate by counting slower by saying "One one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand..." So it feels like seconds on the clock.

The second one is just the guy showing off.

There could be a third one where it's like "one-two-three One, one-two-three Two, one-two-three Three, one-two-three Four..."
This is for certain exercises that have four counts so you end up doing more, mostly military. Like for a pushup, you start with your hands on the floor and your back straight with your feet on the ground (knees not touching the ground). Count 'one' would be bending your arms so your chest gets close or touches the ground, count 'two' would be going up back to the start position with your arms straight, count 'three' would be back down again, and count 'four' would be back up in the start position which completes one round of the exercise (1 pushup, even though you did 2 of them) but instead of saying 'four' you say the 'true' number of pushups you're on, in this case it would be 'One'. then you do all 4 counts again but this time instead of saying 'One' on the 4th count, you say "Two'. Then continuing from their it would be "one-two-three Three, one-two-three Four, one-two-three Five," etc.

I'm hiding hands cause I can't draw them (at least not without lots and lots of time consuming redrawing). Sorry dude, I ain't no artist, just a coder, getting by with what I can. If I have extra time before deadline, I want to do like couple poses for different emotions and actually draw hands on some. Currently I'm too pressed for time.

Hand size is variable now and the player can interact with it. The maths involved in clicking a rotated rectangle makes this harder than it needs to be. Fuck.

Still need to add drawing cards and playing them. And I should probably fix the hand script so larger hands (8+ cards) don't draw under the bottom of the window.

It's better when there's an interesting choice between strategies instead of a boring rock-papers-scissors type thing. Some gimmick enemies that are invulnerable to normal weapons are fine occasionally (Zelda does it well) but I don't want to switch weapons every combat.

I once had a character that was supposed to be crazy. So I took a neural network algorithm off github, fed it shakespeare and used that. What the dude said made no contextual sense but it sure sounded looked like poetry. It was just a small jrpg I made for fun but friends who played it always commented on how that character was creepy af because sometimes what he said accidentally made sense and they thought the dialogues were pre-written but they couldn't exhaust his dialogue options.

Cute AF. One suggestion would be to make the eyes less black. Pure black is too overpowering color, dark brown or dark version of eye/skin color will be easier on the eyes.

Same goes for pure white and any other pure fully saturated color, they pop too much and overpower the rest. For highlights it's better to do a very light version of surrounding color with the hue moved a bit towards blue rather than using white.

>>154865717
Pure black is fine if you know how to use it. If you forgo it, no reason to choose dark purple over all other dark colors, it should depend on how you plan to use the color rather than a random rule that purple=good (or black=bad for that matter.)

It's a common noob mistake to use black incorrectly, so when an experienced artist says "be careful when using pure black", noobs make simplistic rules like "never use black!" and repeat them with authority across the internet.

a progress system that scrapes the thread and categorizes based on trip, so you post your progress with a trip. This trip could be tied to jam/event pages to demonstrate devs who are proud to be part of this community, vs devs who are just parasites.

>forcing tripfaggery over posting as Anonymous

We don't need an automated system. The only thing this would do is give people an excuse to fake progress and tripfag post to inflate their dev-cred. Also it would just give some sort of grading for people who have no idea what they're talking about to act like they know what they're talking about.

>anon posts a ton as anonymous
>jam starts
>newfag says game is a whodev game because it has no dev-cred
>a bunch of other newfags join in and honk their retard horns because muh-dev-cred scoreboard
>system is literally useless for people who are in the thread and check process because they will already be able to identify whodevs.

There is a reason things are the way they are. There is no reason to go and try to emulate shit like the reddit karma system.

5 syllables in most western european languages (english, french, etc) will take about one second. So most numbers and a four-syllable word will be about one second. You could use anything from "Mississippi" to "Motherfucker" and it'll work.

It starts to fall apart once you get past 10 but meh.

using "two-three" is also popular too since it's easy to recite in easy waltz timing to also get about a second. It's actually commonly used and demanded to be spoken aloud when teaching military drill.
>>
>>154866176

honestly.

i think everyone is responsible for what they do with their time.

for example, I have more or less dropped out of college to pursuit game dev, there are mounting debts and I'm more or less obligated to have the sales of my game reach 10k copies to pay it off.

and it probably sounds profoundly stupid, but the feedback I've received from the game I've shown has been overwhelmingly positive and it feels like the first time in my life that I have some sort of goal or motivation. i've never felt this alive before.

it's a risk that I feel was worth taking and I will live out the consequences regardless of the outcome, without whining about it.
