So close yet so far to ripping the game's text...

The game uses similar, though slightly changed formats for the text from P4 and P3. The only tool I could find made for ripping the Japanese text which is obfuscated (unlike the English releases), can be found on this site: hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA046797/

The tool won't work for the P5 files as-is, but the obfuscation method is still the same, so you can take lines from the P5 files, overwrite some lines from a P4 file, and have it come out in plaintext with the tool. So the best bet for ripping the text is either to convert the P5 files to the P3/P4 format for use with the tool, or analyze the tool (no source code) to figure out how the obfuscation works and then develop a new tool for the P5 files. I've tried working with the former method.

The main difference between the P4 and P5 files is the endianness used and that the P5 files seem to be more condensed, using less nulls. They're still both pretty similar though.

After converting the P5 format to the P4 format, you will have to pack the MSG file into a PM1 file or a BF file or something similar and then use the tool on that to output the Japanese script.

The best I could do was this: a.pomf.cat/utoamp.pm1
It's a port of the msg file within script/field/fscr8000_001_000.bf . The tool only outputs the string IDs without the actual text for it for some reason. The first ID is messed up because I h*cked up the header and didn't want to re-edit the whole thing so I just cut down the title size a little for the first string to keep everything in place.

The text doesn't really say anything interesting by the way, just things like

Ok I fixed the disappearing problem, as I expected it's because of the standalone nature of my "crack" and having to fuck around with the file systems.

Unless that folder you've got in GAMES is the one with all the game files then just follow what I said earlier and move it back to "game" directory, rename it to "NPJ00769" and voila. Then you install the cracked patch.
