I don't think anyone praises the story as being the best in the series. The great bulk of the story is poorly told, and its side stories are better. The moments where the MSQ doesn't suck are basically the tailend of ARR (and that gets turned on its head anyway) and most of HW's Dragonsong War story. The only times ARR's story was good were the times Nero and Gaius did just about anything before Lahabrea turned the story to shit again, and Gaius became a joke never to live up to his 1.0 self.

The game's story is "good" compared to most of the other MMOs right now. As a Final Fantasy game, it isn't the case. It just has its moments

It was, at least, a step up over the majority of ARR's story. I'd say they learned from ARR, on that front and the cutscenes themselves. The Dragonsong War, by itself, is better than any part of ARR's story. They also improved the instanced story battles (like the grand melee and your duel) while also giving Nidhogg a good sendoff (shame EX is boring) and seeing actual character development in Alphinaud.

At the same time, though, I can't think of it as being the best in the series. I'm still far too biased in favour of FF9 and 10, though, and have a soft spot for 3 and 6. The Warring Triad side story in XIV is great, too

If you are in umbral and are going to Fire 3 from a Firestarter, there's no reason not to Transpose first. It doesn't cost you any mana, and being in astral fire means it will do a lot more than umbral.

Firestarter is an instant cast, cost-less Fire III on the GCD. You doing it in Umbral subjects you to the Umbral fire damage penalty, there is no reason to do it. Simply transpose out of Umbral into Astral for one Astral Fire stack and use it, as long as you've got the MP to maintain a fire phase. You will do more damage at no penalty to anything. Just hold the Firestarter until you've got the Umbral III tick, use your Thunder, then transpose out instead of using Fire III there. There is no reason to ever eat the damage penalty

No, there isn't a single area side story worth talking about. Hildibrand is comic relief, but the stories themselves are not worth mentioning for their story telling. It's a series of gags, that's fine but it's a completely different ball game.

I did every single ARR class/job to 50 and I can say that almost none of them are worth talking about. Pugilist, Black Mage for the beast tribe friendship, and Rogue are the only ones I would take the time to talk about, and they're still pretty damn sub par for the stories themselves. They're just better than the rest. I would have included Postmoogles except I'd just end up pointing out how forgettable each story is with them complete with how short they are

First you have to work out what GC you think is the best on your data centre, which takes quite a lot of time, and it changes every so often because people switch. Figuring this out will increase your success rate a little.
Flames were best on mine for the longest time, Mael 2nd and Adders dead last, but it's become clear in the past 3-4 months that more people migrated to Mael, and Flames have been massive shitters.
You have to realise that PvP is basically RNG. Any team has basically the same chance of winning, 33% chance of winning any match, but again, slight deviations depending on which GC the regular players are at.
Even if you're a really good player, your skill alone is incredibly insignificant, you also can't do shit by yourself.
Follow the group, do as the group does even if they're being stupid, you lose if you separate from them.
That's basically all I can tell you, give it a go.

Boredom, or something. Leveling in XIV is easy once the armory bonus is a factor. Leveling new characters is the chore but not as bad as it was. I've got almost all 60s on one character, a handful on the second and I'm gonna be taking DRG to 60 a third time and whichever other jobs I want. Only job I've never taken to 60 is DRK because I've never truly bothered to play it. Leveling jobs is a good way to fill the catch-up patches
