We don't know but I think Cozy would have stayed with Atlus if things went well. DDS was supposed to be a trilogy but they changed it to duology because DDS1 underperformed. it's possible. if nocturne was a hit they might have felt the need to work on an SMT IV in the style of nocturne right after, like SMT II was to SMT I. okada certainly wouldn't have left at least. it was a pretty rough time in general for atlus, their market share had declined a lot from the 90s where they were considered to be one of the top RPG makers in japan. i think the 10 year gap between SMT II and Nocturne didn't help, either. their fortunes started turning up with the DS, etrian odyssey and trauma center were big successes

I don't know how accurate that comparison is, FF and Pokemon are the two largest JRPGs by a large margin, and both of those only managed to start simultaneous releases in the past couple years. FFXIII had a 4 month gap, for example. Even back when FF wasn't having simultaneous releases, Square Enix is notorious for rewrites and sloppy localization, something that doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon.

But yeah I get what you mean. Atlus Japan still acting like the west doesn't exist is pretty painful, especially considering that it made up half of P4G's sales. The E3 debacle was almost insulting. It also doesn't help that Sega is dumping all their localizations on Atlus USA now as well, I think if they weren't doing Yakuza 0, #FE, and SMT IVF we'd have P5 by December. I hope they realize this when NA and EU constitute most of P5's sales.

I first played Catherine in Japanese. Was pretty excited when I heard they got Baker to play Vincent, because he seemed to be a perfect fit.
Then I heard the actual dub and got really disappointed. It's painfully mediocre considering the cast they had. Vincent doesn't even sound half as neurotic as he did in the original.

For as much attention as Persona gets, it's not nearly as large or prominent a brand as either FF or Pokemon, not even in Japan. Being notable is not the same as being able to command the same resources as the market leaders.

That's not to say simultaneous global (or at least EN/JP) release isn't possible for a game of Persona 5's scale and profile, but the dev processes need to be built with that in mind from very early on, and many indications hint that P5's development has been more protracted than usual, not least because they shifted two platforms in the interim and probably spent a good bit of time just figuring out what they would do after putting together Catherine.

FFXV and Pokemon are more outliers than examples, as Square Enix and TPC are able to command orders of magnitude more resources and cross-pond development than Atlus at its height or Sega in its current state.

Hell, I doubt even FFXV would have gotten this treatment if Tabata and his team were not the ones in charge. Tabata is a troubleshooter and was brought in to right the Versus XIII ship after salvaging FFXIV, and making an MMO work lends itself better to the way FFXV has since been developed and marketed (i.e. in a notably more "western" approach). I imagine that if Tabata were not brought in and everything were somehow still OK with Nomura, we'd end up seeing a 3-6 month delay on whatever Versus XIII ended up being.
