I just beat Dark Souls the other day and was told terrible things about Dark Souls 2.

I have started Dark Souls 2 in the past week and have been enjoying it. It's not nearly as bad as people were building it up to be.

I've heard good and awful things about Dark Souls 3. I've played Bloodborne but didn't actually much care for it (though it was my first Souls game).

Is it worth using Dark infusion Over Chaos as a pyromancer?

Sure you avoid the fire resistance people have but most of your attacks use fire, if you slap on a fire clutch ring the damage you gain pretty much cancels the bonus resistance out anyway.

Why is the knight helm incompatible with almost every chest piece in the game? By "incompatible" I mean every fucking time you get this fucking gap showing off the scrawny undead inside, beef jerky or not.

This really bugs me because there are a lot of armors that would go well with that helmet, if it had a proper collar.

DS2 is definitely the weakest in the series. It's still a fine game, and I enjoyed it a lot when it came out, but every time I return to it after playing the others multiple times, it just feels worse and worse. The way your character moves, the level design, it's just not as well put together.

It's not a bad game compared to say...lords of the fallen, but it just doesn't hold up compared to the other Souls titles.

It's a case of being so used to Dark Souls 1 mechanics that you simply can't get used to a new system and/or you heard so many negative opinions from other sources that you were negatively predisposed toward the game from the get go.I played Dark Souls 2 blind and loved it. I had some issues with some of the mechanics (Adaptability in particular was a bad idea, as was Soul Memery) and like another anon said, the level design in many places just wasn't good. I think one of the things wrong with Dark Souls 2 is that it has good ideas but then falls into mediocrity and didn't make full use of some of the good ideas the game had or half-assed plenty of them so they end up being really unsatisfying.
For whatever it's worth, if you liked DS2's gameplay, you should do DS2's NG+ because currently it's the only game that incorporated any worthwhile reasons to do a NG+ playthrough.

I think DS3 nailed how the combat and weapons should 'feel' and level and encounter design within the levels (aside from bonfires, I think they gave you too many bonfires) and online mechanics. Idk, I really like playing through DS3 NG+ with Gotthards, they basically turn the game into bloodborne but you get them so late. Certainly made getting plat more fun.

Also, the build variety in DS2 is pretty shallow. I played through it a bunch of times when it came out, and in the end its really just "what color do you want your magic missiles and weapon buff to be." Also, since you can buff infused weapons, they aren't a gameplay choice at all and infusions don't actually influence your gameplay at all.

The only build that ever felt unique was enchanted MLGS because it's such a solid shield 2handed with a staff for your ranged option.

So yeah, the build variety got me to try out a good handful of characters, but since it's mostly superficial, and the gameplay and levels are so plodding and mediocre, I really don't have any reason to go back to it.

So you're saying the series is better now that there's only one playstyle and things like heavy armor are still around but shit and useless?

If they wanted to make a Bloodborne and leave the things they didn't like in Dark Souls like armor being actually useful and Ultras being useful then sure ok, make a nonborne then, but having the game carry the Dark Souls name and then making armor completely worthless and shitting on all playstyles that isn't quality 40/40 straight sword or a curved sword is amateurish and shitty design in my opinion.

Demon's Souls' gameplay was pretty close to DS3's, but armor in that game was still useful because END also increased equipment load and the threshold to fastroll was 50/50 instead of 70%.

Hyperarmor is ok substitute for poise, but to balance it out, you should make it so that heavy armor actually provides protection or would be upgradable so you don't end up in a situation where heavy armor exists but it's totally unviable as a playstyle.

Currently DS3 is the game with the least amount of variety because magic is shit, miracles are shit and quality reigns supreme. DS3 might have a ton of weapons and armors available, but it doesn't matter because the amount of viable shit is lower than in Demon's Souls.

The free +10 levels from hollow infusions make it stat-efficient at lower mid/endgame level ranges where invading is much more active and the bleed proc after 4-5 hits gives you enough burst damage to blow up phantoms before they can heal. Since bleed buildup persists even if someone chugs an estus and nobody keeps red moss at the ready, it helps you wear down the enormous stock of estus a host can have more quickly and work against their effective HP advantage.

Plus, since you only need to meet minimum requirements and a hollow gem to use most weapons functionally, it lets me keep something fun to use as a backup when I'm against solo hosts or weaker pairs while still always having the carthus as an option if I need to deal with a big squad or a necromancer host.

If you put a Dark buff on a Dark weapon it increases the damage. Similarly infused weapons benefiting from faith/int were good. In DS3 if a weapon scales with FTH/INT it's so small boost that you barely even notice while infusing quality is almost invariably the best solution in DS3 since Blessed infusion is dumb since it nerfs the damage so much without giving anything in return, the simple infusion is useless due to the regen speed while having reduced damage. Infusing shields in DS3 is useless because pretty much only Fire infusion gives you any decent protection in exchange for the protection you give up.

Nah, primarily using An Uchi buffed with crystal magic weapon or the Sage's Rapier. It's a mage knight build, 48 INT and only 26 DEX so the uchi kinda sucks. Also been throwing crystal sphere shots at him which do decent damage. Some of those forms though in his first phase or just tough for me to roll properly out of and he just keeps coming at you constantly. Most of the time I don't even get into phase 2 =/

Strongly considering re-aligning my stats and just going full quality, since I never feel totally natural using magic anyway.

Hyper Armor. Imagine you have poise, but only while attacking, and only on most larger weapons, and some weapons have multipliers that makes your hyper armor more effective. Hyper armor can be broken while youre attacking, but usually you can hit something before that happens. If youre finding the crystal spears to not be doing enough damage or taking too long to cast, and you want to be able to very quickly punish, Farron Flashsword actually isnt half bad as an actual sword. I had to beat Dragonslayer Armor like that because I couldnt nail him with any souls arrows due to his shield. Its got rolling attacks, sprinting attacks, and is fast that you could probably punish and roll out of any his attacks.

Where is the gameplay choice here? In DS1 and 3 you choose between a damage infusion that will utilize your scaling with 100% uptime, or a normal weapon that does less most of the time, but by using a spell slot and getting a cast in, can be buffed to greater effectiveness. Its a trade off, its a gameplay decision, its build variety.

DS2 is "my build is red so my weapon has the red modifier on it"

I agree that DS1 is the most varied game because all of the builds have very different strengths an weaknesses beyond "this enemy is strong against blue magic missiles, but yellow magic missiles work well". Every school of magic has a different goal. Sorc is a heavy investment offence replacement, faith is a medium investment endurance supplement with spike damage potential late to not be useless once you git gud, and pyro is a low investment damage supplement that compliments close quarters builds.

You can see elements of this in DS3. Sorc is a blunder in my opinion as it still requires heavy investment, but does not adequately replace hackin and slashin, but faith is probably in the best spot it's every been as it reigns supreme as the buff king while also having strong utility. Pyro is weird, the mana system (of which lightning spears are definitely a casualty) means it can't really be a low investment supplement, so they just went all in as a primary damage option, which I think was the best option they had.

Hexes had no reason to exist, other than artificial variety. As a class of their own, they added nothing to the game as far as playstyle options that weren't covered by sorc. They're better as odd options for the 3 original schools to bend their usual comfort zones and add a little flavor.

It doesn't work that way. Buff damage is based on base damage. In pvp those different colors are used to trick people into choosing the wrong counter(shield, ring, burr, armor)
It's the infusion that matters in the end and you choose the right one by looking at the opponent.

Not really. DS2 hexes did have a lot of things interesting. Of course there were a lot of spells like dark orb, dark weapon and (great) resonant soul and affinity, but there were also spells like Scraps of Life, Resonant Flesh, Numbness, Climax, etc. Plus all hexers were also able to become omnicasters and utilise different schools of magic, which made those builds pretty damn interesting.

Infusing your weapon or not in DS2 does not change the way you play at all. It's a default decision based on numbers and there's no tradeoff because it doesn't limit buffing.

The problem with imbalance in souls games is typically that most things are too weak to function, while a few things are good at everything.

When imbalance is fun is when everything is strong at something to the point where it's overpowered in its own gimmick or niche. Souls games tend to have far too many weapons that leave you asking "what is this good for?"

A system that lets you make things stronger always has the potential to introduce new overpowered edgecases that increase the number of weapons with a "I am strong" scenario. Weapons that are only conditionally powerful are much more fun and interesting than ones that are just always good at everything, which is why our Carthus/WP/Gotthard's meta is so goddamn boring. It's also why things like 2kat or sellswords, where there's a gimmick that's incredibly powerful if you can land it but not very strong otherwise are a lot of fun, especially when playing against something else that also has a strong gimmick

If giving a greathammer quickstep suddenly made it broken, I'd be all for giving greathammers quickstep. Everything should have some gimmick or edgecase where it feels unfair, because playing around windows of strength and weakness, control and vulnerability is what makes for an interesting and enjoyable paradigm in games, especially ones with pvp.

The core issues with ultras isn't how quickly they get stamina, but how small the tank is.

When 3 attacks empties 40END it practically doesn't matter if it instantly refills afterwards, you'll always be extremely limited by your stamina costs

Seems quality trumps everything. Pure str has its uses because a few stat requirements. Should I go dex/luck?
