/rwg/ - Rimworld General

Everyone is happy edition.

http://rimworldgame.com/

RimWorld follows a number of survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of known space. Inspired by the space western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, the epic scale of Dune, and Warhammer 40,000.

>>154525673

>>
>>154525807
The joints are more profitable. You can do as I do and schedule use only when mood goes under 15%, or deny it altogether from the drug policy menu.
>>
>>154525807
selling it in bulk form allows you to sell a large volume of it without triggering a police raid
>>
Can I get a picture of a good killbox for Alpha 15? The killbox I am using at the moment is a bit funky and I need a colonist to bait them in or they'll just break through the door.
>>
>>154525941
>You can do as I do and schedule use only when mood goes under 15%, or deny it altogether from the drug policy menu.
My main concern are colonists with chemical fascination. I denied all of them drugs, forbade the stacks and yet the dipshit decided to binge.
>>
>>154526285
Arrest them when they're binging. If you really want a secure drug storage, you can wall the room in. Takes a bit of micro, but that way there's no way nobody can ever get their hands on the stuff.
>>
>>154525970
...police raid? Is that a real thing? I didn't see anything about it in the update notes.
>>
Is 5 colonists the bare minimum for a comfortable colony?

1: research / medicine / warden
2: mine
3: cook
4: construct / craft / tailor
5: grow / handle animals

Anything after that is bonus.

Since the Crashlanded scenario makes you begin with three guys I guess I would merge 1+3 and 2+5.

What do you think?
>>
>>154527604
It's not in the patch notes since it's supposed to be a hidden thing. If you make more than 30k silver total or I think 5k in one go by selling drugs, you'll get raided.
>>
>>154527907

>>
>>154557018
Yeah, but it grows slowly.

Rice = most efficient plant bar none
Corn = least labour-intensive plant
Potato = grows well in gravel
Berries = can be eaten raw

I kind of like the way the plants work, certain plants are best for certain situations. For example, I usually grow rice in the beginning, and when I have a decent headway with meals/consumption I switch to corn so my growers aren't constantly harvesting and sowing. If all I have is gravel, I'll farm potatoes instead.

Strawberries can go fuck themselves though.

I'm not trying to bait here.
Is anyone else getting the impression that the dev of Rimworld lacks the "hard but fair" mentality of dwarf fortress?
There are so many realistic and viable optimal strategies that the dev stomps on because you're doing to well. This annoys the shit out of me. It wouldn't be so bad if he were more straightforward about it, but it's sneaky bullshit.
> You built your base in a mountain. A sound plan, until you learn about bug spawns. Start your base over.
> You walled in your base with a choke point. Raiders will attack the walls. Start over.
> You created a village with a central bunker. Raiders will set fire to outside buildings.
> You created a choke point leading into a natural crevasse with your town inside. Raiders now airdrop in.
> You make roofs. Airdrop raiders now break through roofs.
> Wiring
> My turtle died and my wife left me. If I get cold in the next year, I will snap.

How much you have to micromanage so few colonists, how debilitating a loss of one can be, and how random bullshit can cause huge losses makes the game unfun for me.

DF does have problems, but they arise more organically from complex systems. The devs don't create them from thin air just so you don't do as well.

I thought DF tantrum spirals made a little bit of sense. Like a riot in a large community. They only occurred if everyone was already miserable.

>Is anyone else getting the impression that the dev of Rimworld lacks the "hard but fair" mentality of dwarf fortress?
I think (and hope) you're the only one. They're different for sure, but that is not the core difference.

The challenge in Rimworld is different from Dwarf Fortress mainly in that regard it tries to undermine strategies that abuse shortcomings of AI. The combat AI is a major focus on the game and you are expected to do some colonist microing in combat. It's not Jagged Alliance 2, but the combat is tactical.

The colonybuilding in Rimworld is different from Dwarf Fortress in that regard you don't design a large ecosystem that runs itself. It places much higher importance on individuals. This decision was obviously made because of technical limitations, meaning Tynan couldn't get a larger, more complex game to perform adequately.

And the biggest difference between Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress is this: RW is gamey as fuck, DF is a complete simulation. Events in RW? Random shit generated out of nowhere by a bullshit storyteller. What about DF? The entire world is simulated on the background. Megabeasts, migrants and raids actually come from somewhere. The terrain is real and continuous unlike in RW, which just presents a cheap as fuck illusion of a world.

Artists are pretty useful. I got a wanderer that can only make statues at 15 skills and is horrible at or can't do any other job. At first I thought it's just another mouth to feed but I set him to make art full time and the mood bonuses are magnificent, restrict someone's allowed area to their bedroom + the rec and dining rooms and it's not possible for them to break no matter how fucked up they get. It's like having cryptosleep caskets without having to research them, a really good panic button.

Maybe in some circumstances, but at least some of the ones I listed aren't like that. Creating a chokepoint, or wall, or mining into a cave system is not cheating the AI. These are things people did to defend themselves throughout history, and the game offers to us. To take it away because the AI can't pose a challenge is frustrating. Most other games are above this. In minecraft, mobs don't spawn in your house. In Halo, your guns work on all enemies to a certain extent. The devs never sabotage you because they failed at making the game legitimately challenging.
Sorry to rant.

that's a trivial difference since the two are indistinguishable for all practical purposes. i would compare this to the difference between a buddhist, one that believes every good or bad result is the result of karma, yet the inner mechanisms are so hopelessly complex that only an enlightened being can ever hope to grasp them, and a nihilist that believes good or bad things happen due to random uncontrollable variables. both have radically different views of how the world works "on the background" but in everyday life they face the same shit.
>>

>>it tries to undermine strategies that abuse shortcomings of AI.
>Maybe in some circumstances, but at least some of the ones I listed aren't like that
You're wrong. That really is the reason all those incidents exist.

Rimworld used to have nothing but huge brainless raids walking into your killbox. Players saw that was bad and boring. Then we got sappers, drop pod raids, infestations, etc - more variety to make things better.

Sounds like you just don't like games that put any pressure on you. No proactive dangers, only challenges you can engage and win at your own pace.
>>
Can bugs spawn ontop of sandbags? I have one spot with like 2-3 tiles near my bedroom quarters that's tunneled under overhead mountain, which bugs seem to love to spawn instead of the mining room just three tiles over. I don't want to wall it completely off because it offers a good escape route for my non-combatant colonists in case of raids, but the bugs spawning there are troublesome.
>>
>>154562232

if we had embrasures that AI can be coded to fight against it would have more simulation like quality with blockhouses and castles so you dont need 'gamey' killboxes and it would still be balanced defense against sappers and regular raiders

>that's a trivial difference since the two are indistinguishable for all practical purposes.
The difference between a simplistic gamey system and complex simulation is anything but trivial. And the two are very easily distinguishable for anyone who has a cursory understanding of the game mechanics of both.

Rimworld in its current state couldn't ever have something like df adventure mode, because the world does not exist. There is no continuous map and there cannot be. The world map does nothing but sets some parameters for each coordinate. It's just a cheap as fuck illusion of a world.

>yet the inner mechanisms are so hopelessly complex that only an enlightened being can ever hope to grasp them
If by "enlightened being" you mean a gamer of average intelligence, you are right. Otherwise that is ridiculous hyperbole.
>>
>>154563357
embrasures are horrible both gameplay and realism wise. there's nothing wrong with placing a lot of firepower at a chokepoint that's a realistic defense the problem is that the ai is dumb enough to enter the chokepoint and die like it's ww2 and it's the invasion of normandy. i think sending endless waves of tribals or wild animals to check the quality of your killbox is not a bad raid concept, but most human raiders should try to break down your walls and sort of "test" how robust your base is and force you to come out of your hole.

The medieval mod might help with the Teutonic order? Depending on what exact part of their history you'd want to roleplay. Otherwise I'm not sure. I don't think there's an early guns/muskets/arquebus mod, although it wouldn't surprise me if there was and I didn't know about it.

You could have experiment rooms and ovens (sort of) for the nazi stuff, but I'm not sure about anything else. There might be some sort of poison gas mod somewhere, I haven't looked.
>>
>>154563806
Yes, you cannot predict the output of a complex system if you do not have enough information about the input.

On the other hand, you can *know* the general outline of any Rimworld game goes if you understand how the storytellers function - and they are very simple. Simple enough to be moddable by anyone. Simple threat cycles, category weights, threat point counters, event cooldowns and mean times between events. Event Randy is constricted to certain limits and exhibits some patterns.

But predictability or the lack of it was not what I was talking about. Shit's gamey as fuck because storytellers just magically spawn shit on your screen.

You cannot go out there and track the path raiders traveled from their base, because they actually didn't travel and their base does not exist, nor does the world. You cannot abandon your embark and visit it as an adventurer or later re-embark in/near it. Animals do not actually migrate across the world, they just spawn out of nowhere. Weather phenomena like eclipse or toxic fallout do not affect the world at large, it's just a gamey event that happens on your screen. The world you are in has no history. Ages of people and mechanoids alike are just meaningless numbers. There is no real mechanoid hive in your world, they just spawn out of nowhere. There is no actual distant engine of hatred sending out psychic pulses across your world, it's just a gamey event.

>infestations, drop raids, and so on are game systems[SIC - mechanics] in and of themselves, not "problems"
He meant those are problems the player needs to deal with. Not problems "with the game".
And he is complaining those were added specifically to [accordingly to him] stomp on, instead of spawning naturally from a complex system.

Please stop posting until you're able to at least understand what people write.

>>154560850
Actually, those are intended to encourage mixed strategies. Don't build only on open field or a mountain, but both; don't rely so much on the choke points, have a decent defence system inside your base; don't put all your electric eggs inside the same battery basket; be prepared for "random" bullshit like a colonist needing more joy because he got some relationship problems.

I agree the DF gameplay is better in this regard, but IMHO RW already went a long way, it'll get better too.

everything exhibits patterns, even so called chaos. simulate the game of life or wolf vs rabbit for more than 10 minutes and you'll see patterns emerge. many games promise and fail to deliver because of this, to the point "emergent gameplay" became a derogatory term. random generation is supposed to generate a never the same twice world, yet you will invariably get bored of insert favorite roguelike, because it boils down to the same shit every time

being unable to to explore the world is a negative, but the game doesn't play differently because it's not simulated. had the code been hidden from you and you were told it's a complex simulation you'd believe it because you have no way of telling otherwise. i don't even know why i'm defending this piece of shit game i won't even bother to buy, if you're looking for a simulation you're barking at the wrong tree, looking for "immersion" in games is an incredibly high demand and already speaks of high standards that this game is not even remotely close to being able to satisfy. some of the best rpgs i ever played i don't consider immersive

actually i will reply. you're retarded for not realizing my usage of the word "problem" is the same as in his post, you're the only one that thought it meant "problem with the game". his criticism was that those (game mechanics) were added ad hoc to solve something instead of naturally arising as a result of a (game mechanic). it's an insult even having to explain why this criticism is pointless. a game mechanic is bad because it didn't spawn from other game mechanics? is rain bad because it was needed to solve wildfires and didn't spawn from weather calculations?
>>
>>154567518
Come on now, chaos does not exhibit predictable patterns based on simple rules.

>had the code been hidden from you and you were told it's a complex simulation you'd believe it because you have no way of telling otherwise.
Wrong, the difference is easy to tell. Nobody had to tell me how rimworld worldgen works, I figured it out myself. It doesn't have to be moddable to pick up obvious flaws. Besides, the history of videogaming is full of debunked developer lies, many of them less obvious than this one would be.

You argue that all players won't notice these limitations in the current Rimworld build, I get that. But these limitations also severely limit what Rimworld can be developed into. It isn't built on a good core system.

your inability to read a simple post has reached another level, i'm not sure how i'll even untangle this mess. the only person who confused "problems(with the game)" and "mechanic" is you. both of us used the word problem to mean difficulty to the player, challenge. his complaint was that bad events in the game don't feel like a result of game mechanics, that they're just stuff the developers to "make problems" for the player. my response was that those "problems for the player" are themselves game mechanics.

You can do it like this to maximize the amount of tables per lamp, but your layout is okay-ish if you want to simplify stuff. (Still, no reason for those wooden walls between tables - I think two pillars are more than enough to support the roof.)

There is two turrets at each entrance, every time something is gonna happens, i set two line of colonists behinds the bags.

There is two entrance because it take forever to go all the way around my base. The west entrance work the same way, but i don't like it somehow. My colonist with the incendiary grenade launcher (who is the "leader" of the town) is always doing caulateral dommage on the west entrance. But on the north and south, it's a slaughter.

I don't use the cryo caskets, but i let them be. Maybe they can be usefull later.

There are five other mystery boxes on my map, like the one at the east of my base for example. I wonder what i may found.

Had an infestation as well near my fridge, everyone was hungry and tired. Had to kill them all day and hope no one goes mad. Seen some anon dig a maze far from his home so they have a larger spawn point way over the other side. Will try that hopefully killing some raiders.

is there any way to prevent my forest biome from turning into a desert with no animals or grass.

would it help if i never chopped trees?

does the grass or trees ever come back?
>>

>>
>>154625981
you can grow trees yourself in vanilla too i think
grass spreads by itself, nothing you can do about it
animals will keep spawning naturally
>>
>>154625981
Grass takes a huge time to grow back. If you don't mind editing the game files:

1. Open the [game dir]/Mods/Core/Defs/ThingDefs_Plants directory;
2. Find the files Plants_Wild_Tropical.xml and Plants_Wild_Temperate.xml;
3. In both, look for <seedEmitMTBDays>3.5</seedEmitMTBDays>;
4. Change the 3.5 with 1.5 or whatever you want.

Should i get rid of boomalope herds by killing them during a rainstorm? or will that herd just respawn if i wipe them all out?

I usually don't bother, except if the fields are filled with booms and I need the meat.

And they respawn, but they share the same cap as other animals, so you'll get far less.

>>154616494
I just build 1x1 walls at the peremiter of my base for defense. Plop two or three guys with guns behind them with a roof over their head and watch them beat any ranged combatant in a war of attrition.

Turrets are vastly more useful though, dirt cheap and no power or logistics requirement, their only weakness is the inability to use heavy cover. And I don't have to pull people out from what they're doing when they're up. I wish early turrets required themselves to be manned and later ones required either a command center console manned by a colonist or an AI unit to automate them.

In fact, I think it'd be a lot of fun to use an AI unit to help automate stuff around your base... at the risk of it going rogue and turning your turrets and doors on you.
