I feel that Fates is lacking in content. Revelations gameplay and balance is garbage and many find the Spotpass chapters much more enjoyable and rewarding than castle battles and buying skills online. Awakening also has better DLC maps where you need to use your team to fight in, not a pre-set team. The fact that story and characters in Awakening are handled much, much better than Fates is also a big factor. Fates' characters just don't make players feel attached to them enough, and attachment is what keeps the fans around longer.

Despite having inferior maps, at least compared to Conquest, Awakening's maps are still fairly serviceable. The gap between your troops and the main prince (the rest vs Avatar/Chrom and the rest vs Xander/Ryouma) is no where near as jarring. The fact that random Annas sometimes pop up on the map and offer rarer items/good items at a discount encourage more play time. There are more optional recruitments that are handled much more smartly (playing the paralogue instead of retarded MyCastle upgrades requirements), and Apotheosis (despite me thinking it's pretty bullshit) is also a good incentive for people to grind the shit out of their dream team for that kind of adventure. The way Second Seals work in that game also provides longevity in gameplay because of all the level refreshing/class experimenting.

That aside Awakening is definitely the more fun game. It's only problem is that it doesn't really give you "real" difficulty between either having fun breaking the game on Normal/Hard or having the game break you with Frederick Emblem on Lunatic/+. Conquest is still the better experience if you want "real" challenge, but Awakening gives you so many options it has fantastic replay value.

Awakening's story is filled to the brim with plot holes, Emmeryn is retarded, all the villains besides Walhart are mustache-twirler tier, Chrom has no character arc and the little he does get is reverted by the end for the sake of MU dicksucking, Robin is a mary sue, it introduced the cancer known as the Outrealms, and it treaded all over Akanea lore by making Naga some generic sexy light goddess (I know they say "hurr I'm not a goddess" but she might as well be) and Grima having been her ETERNAL RIVAL because reasons.

The characters are just as vapid as Fates and the "five wacky meme supports for every good one" originated in Awakening.

The thing is, lategame Birthrout and almost all Retardations maps requires your OP anikis or MU with their buttsluts to be a chokepoint. In Awakening despite Chrom and Lucina having their prf weapons, they're still not invincible and others can contribute meaningfully.

On the subject of characters, Fates only have a few fleshed out and intersting characters. Most of them are one-trick pony gags, especially the children. Everyone just feel so disconnected from one another despite the liege-retainer relationship that gives them a more explainable bond that just random friends/troopers.

Also Maribelle is a great blend between having a gimmick (snobby ojou) and being an interesting character (having a simple but fairly interesting background). Not as much as characters like, say, Lon'qu or Henry, but definitely much better than most Fates characters.

In Lunatic, you have 5-6 enemies in reach of you turn 1. You have exactly FOUR squares of safety near the start, and some off to the side which can only be reached quickly by Stahl. You pretty much have to send someone into the middle of them all, since if you don't you'll have nowhere to run next turn and units will die (all the enemies on the lower half are programmed to rush you).

And since Awakening Lunatic enemies are so retarded early on, anybody who isn't Fred of Robin is getting 1-2RKO'd by every single one of them. Stahl gets destroyed, Vaike gets destroyed, Sully gets destroyed if it's a Barbarian, Virion gets destroyed, Miriel gets destroyed, Chrom MIGHT be able to survive a single hit but that's about it.

This is basically what you have to work with in many chapters of the game; it makes utility irrelevant and encourages the strategy of just abusing Veteran to overlevel Robin and have her kill everything.

Robin isn't even the best unit in Awakening.
The point is that even though Robin and Chrom are god-tier units on their own you can also pretty easily turn most of your party into ridiculously strong units in ordinary gameplay, outside of no-grind Lunatic runs. Almost every single unit is viable and most can excel because Awakening's mechanics let you easily break the game outside of the deliberately unfair bullshit modes.
In Fates there's still a handful of god-tier units, but unlike Awakening the game makes it essentially mandatory for you to rely on them as a crutch because your army has much less units that can come close to their power even with levels of attention that would let an Awakening unit snap the game in half.

Also I don't even bother using Frederick unless I really have to (like in chapter 5 to rescue both Maribelle and Ricken). I stopped deploying him after chapter 3 and even during the ealier chapters he's just a pair-up bot sometimes and most of the time he's just out of range and close to Lissa just to be safe. Even when I want to grind my healers my other unpaired (non-MU mages not included) units can surround the lone enemy and take a hit for the healer to staff grind.

The prologue is meant to teach you how to play so the enemies aren't threatening. And he's a Jeigan meant for babbies who want to cheese early game. If you already know that, avoid using him.
