Bethesda referencing Lovecraft is kinda stretchin' it. I doubt Emil is interested in those stories. Lots of Sci-Fi does take inspiration from it, and I'd imagine the movies Bethesda is inspired by was indirectly inspired by Lovecraft.

And the ghost house, while a fun little sidequest, wasn't really "eldritch" since it was pretty straight-forward.

Far Harbor would've been a pretty great opportunity though. Maybe Far Harborites could've been deformed with the Innsmouth look, with the implication that it was radiation mixing with something from under the sea. And the final progression might be more hostile and monstrous.

Bethesda is hiding butt sliders from us. Why are they allowed to get away with this?

But yeah, as good of an upgrade as the customization is, it leaves me wanting more. There are way too many arbitrary limits when it comes to face proportions (probably because they're scared of face-weighted clothing looking weird).
Changing muscle/fat mass does nothing to the texture and normal maps of the torso. You can't get ripped because you already are, even if you're obese or dangerously underweight? And I'm pretty sure the textures exist in the vanilla game. I've seen them on NPCs.
Also, as is highlighted in the picture, there's another layer of character body customization (affecting scale of polys weighted to individual bones?) that can only be modified through modding. Pretty sad.

Ghouls needs some lore love. Ferals especially.

Nuka-World touched on it quite nicely with Oswald and his friends. There's a lot of neat stuff there.
I especially liked the little exchange between him and the feral when he was trying to paint it.

They had a hell of a lot of exposure in 3 too.

The sustenance thing is pretty weird. I think Bethesda's idea of things is that starving a ghoul of food and water just totally fucks them up (as opposed to them straight up dying, like in Necropolis.) That's why the BoS soldier feeds the ferals, to keep them docile. As for the Gunner that says "they don't need food or water", I think that's literally just because he doesn't know what he's talking about. Radiation also keeps them alive. The boy in the fridge is really dodgy, but you could always say he survived on stale rainwater or something. Honestly, worse things have happened in the FO universe.

What he means is that many objects, such as bridges and shit rock/tree placements, use a new system called precombined meshes in Fallout 4, which takes all of them and combines it down into one to save system meeory.

However, if you try to change only one of the meshes involved, without regenerating the precombined meshes its used in, te precombined mesh will overwrite the changes.

I agree, but Iso games also leave a lot going for them. Fallout 1 and 2's lack of voice acting allows more NPC interactions, while Fallout 3 used a lot of similar voice actors. I'd love to see the old guys take a crack at isometric Fallout, since I missed shooting people in the dick and placing more focus on my Specials.

Dogmeat was an Easter egg in Fallout 2 and left out of New Vegas, though. To say he has to be in every game is just as confused a statement as saying Super Mutants gotta be a huge problem, or that the Brotherhood and the visor imagery on the cover must be a prominent part of Fallout. In reality, Fallout evolves and changes as societies rise and fall just like history. It's not at all a comic book, where the Batman must come back every month and nobody stays dead.

Bethesda games are on the scale of small MMOs, hell, Morrowind and Oblivion were called "the single player MMOs" for the sheer size and scope.

Name one MMO that hasn't come out as a buggy mess. You can't, its impossible.

It doesn't mater how big the team is, or even if you have a decade to make the game, games that large always come out as buggy messes. Its a simple unavoidable fact of making a game that large.

Even if you look a games with far smaller levels of interaction, like GTA where 99.99% of everything is a static proper that just respawns if you look away from it, have known ot have crazy and wild bugs like entire parts of the map vanishing into black voids.

I mean, Bethesda hit it's stride with an open world filled with rich lore and worldbuilding that is Morrowind. So I would have wanted to build on the success of Morrowind and keep Cyrodiil a Japanese/Roman-Jungle city, a character creation and building system that allows for all kinds of potential character concepts for the player, and questlines with strong stories, multiple paths to take, and well-written characters.

Things like that would be important to me.

But I guess to you, that version of Oblivion would just be "indie shovelware only 5 people play."

I like them although there's a few small problems. They MUST have merged with 87s because some of them say "no green stuff here". The game makes it sound like all the supers came from the Institute though perhaps an oversight because it gives them a little depth if they're merging with the super dumbs from 87. They are definitely smarter than the 87s, not only can they fashion their own gear they also lay traps and speak a bit more and can address you directly. I don't like the lack of centaurs but it makes sense from the Institute only angle. If they were really merged with 87s then they should have a couple of centaurs, unless they didn't survive the journey.

Couple that with the fact that the Institute kept them inside and tested on them for a while before dumping them outside, it makes sense that they'd piece together how they're made.

Play the game dumb shit. Vigil destroyed the FEV lab and left the Institute only a month or so before the game began because he felt the FEV experiments were pointless for that very reason.

John Hancock is a patriot ghoul, so he's alright. Strong is basically Fawkes but not as a bright. Rob, less annoying then he was in Fallout 3. Piper, sarcasm incarnate, not necessary a bad thing. Nick Valentine, every trope of hard boiled detective in a synth. Danse, FOR THE BROTHERHOOD, wait I'm a synth? Fug. Codsworth is a Codsworth. Dogmeat is a dog. X6-88, I shoot people.

It's really personal preference. On average 4 and 3 had some shitties but were out weighted by pretty good characters. NV had one good character but on average was meh.

Think of companions like pasta. They're boring as fuck if you just have base character with gun that follows you. But if you sprinkle on spices and sauces on such as quests, dialogue, and actual personality it can turn into something great.

Raul, if given more quests and dialogue, probably could've been more than just "good".

I know you're memeing here, but I think part of it is that in the earlier games, a lot of the easter egg encounters were directly isolated from the rest of the game for the most part - encounters were compartmentalized, which meant that silly stuff wasn't clashing as hard with the base game.

Fallout 3, NV, and 4s worlds lend themselves less to this kind of humor and such because everything is far more connected, meaning the sudden shift in tone can be a lot more jarring if done poorly.

The Institute figured out how to stop aging without FEV, which is how Kellogg became biologically immortal. And he didn't have the advantage made from scratch.
FEV doesn't influence whether you can gain or lose weight, it simply increase base muscle mass.

Everything else that's improved is simply because, like I said earlier, they're prime, healthy humans.
A standard Gen 3 would fare about as well as a random wastelander in combat, because they're not trained like coursers.

Synths are born genetically perfect and in prime physical state, and are born functionally immortal. They would therefor naturally live longer than Kellogg.
Their immortality may have a practical limit, a point in which they become so inefficient they're useless, but for the Institute's intents and purposes, they're "immortal".
The same would apply to super mutants. They're immortal, but eventually lose all mental and physical function.

I do, no stealth, no vats (so no blitz I have literally 1 agility), no power armour and only melee (well 99% melee fuck brawling a nukalurk queen i used a missile launcher i keep on Ada for the big problems)

It's hard but fun. Most of it involves running between cover trying to isolate enemies or get them into the open then doing a sprint attack because it's a power attack that does a lot of damage. With this hammer I actually one shot deathclaws sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm rather fond of the UNP body types, but having one thing that armor/clothing modders can make shit for and everyone else can use regardless of their tastes in bodytype is probably one of the better parts of the modding scene for Fo4.

Yes I do because it helps me get into range with raider/gunner pea shooters. I get about 400 with ballistic weave'd raider leathers and metal armour which is enough to get me into range for the smaller guns without suffering any real damage and I usually only need one or two hits. The first hit is from that hammer, if they somehow survive then I swap to Throatslicer it's a legendary disciples knife that does like 300 damage, it hits fast and they generally don't survive its first hit after the initial impact. With big leagues maxed the first hit actually has a good chance to knock their head clean off or disarm them if it doesn't kill them conventionally, I actually knocked off a mirelurks head its little face flew into the distance. You're gonna want chemist so you can make your own chems especially either fury or overdrive, they don't stack together. Fury for big hits overdrive for crits out of vats.

Start 10 strength (I also started 10 endurance I have about 500 hp at level 49) and then go to town, in the sewers after the Deathclaw or in the speakeasy there's a day tripper, take that back to Sanctuary, slap it down and then use the special book on strength, when it wears off you now have 11 strength which is 110% melee damage. Build a weight bench too it gives you +1 strength until you use one of the other ones.

Be careful of yao guai meat, it says like +10 damage but it's bugged and actually gives you 500% damage. Use that or not, I don't because I don't like to abuse it but that hammer gets up to 2500 damage before drugs with it.

Ignoring that Shaun has kept the Synth Retention system in place to reclaim escaped synths in an effort to try to keep synth paranoia down resulting from the Railroad's actions.

The thing with Father is that he is a much older and much more guarded person. His soft side is shown in three distinct ways, all of them linked. The first is releasing you from cryo. Yes it is part due to regretting nevering meeting you and hoping that you would avenge the death of his other parent and your spouse by also sending Kellogg out with Synth-Shaun as bait on what amounted to a suicide mission, but the other part is that he wants you to hopefully see something in the Commonwealth that he and the rest of the Institute cannot. This is why he makes you his successor as Director. You are not some academic shut-in scientist, but a leader of men. Everything that the commonwealth could throw at you was not enough to put you in the ground and every last body you've stepped over makes you that much more intimidating and capable of kicking the Institute's collective asses in line as even when Bioscience rebels and locks themselves in, they cannot keep you from resolving the situation, however you may choose to do so. Finally Shaun seems to have regrets and doubts about the gen 3 synths, which he hopes to shape your opinions about via Shaun 2 even if he cannot voice them himself.

How were they going to try again? The entire region is fractured thanks to all the representatives dying and anything the Institute tries will be foiled by the paranoia of the people? The Institute started as isolationist because the world above was too unlivable, when they tried to interact with the outside world and do good, it blew up in their face by no fault of their own even though they threw all they could at the problem. The only reason they show up in recent memory is to scavenge and test when needed.

The Institute would probably absolutely love to be able to operate without having the kill and replace people. It would make recruiting the rare talented wastelanders much easier and all their experiments much less of a hassle if they don't have to kidnap or trick people into achieving those goals.

Good points, good points. I think it should be clear now that the intention behind Father was to set up a sense of familial sympathy versus the whole "doing the right thing" schtick. I don't think anyone can argue that, at the end of the day, the Institute were definitely the bad guys, even if their collective intentions were good and noble, their methods and their arrogance puts them beyond redemption, I think.

You know what the Institute's "trying to help" probably was? They rolled in, said "hey guys, you people are stupid and dirty, here's how you should do things, now step aside and let us do it to you." That's probably how it went down, and the Institute has the gall to think they were helping. Then the Institute killed the fledgling government. Real big help there. Of course it makes sense, if the Commonwealth did unite like the NCR did, the Institute wouldn't be able to bully them and use them as lab rats as efficiently.

Bethesda has a lot of characters and factions, but not as many of the concepts.

I see Fallout 3 and 4 more as remakes since they're pretty different from the original in the meat but do use some characters and items. An apt analogy would be the new Ghostbusters or Total Recall.

Fallout 1 and 2 were goofy games, with tons of pop culture references, and one dimensional cliche villains and NPCs based off of popular cliches from various sources ranging from Mad Max to 1950's pulp.

So, who did your SILVER SHROUD(!!!) side with in the MQ? I'm struggling to decide who is most fitting. I would say maybe the Railroad, if only because of how little affect it leaves on the wider world, but it involves murdering kids. Wheras the Minutemen requires also being a General, which kind of clashes with whole 'unassuming secret identity' theme.

We need an Unstoppables alternate path, where the Mechanist/Isabella Cruz builds the teleporter, and you do the entire MQ to stop the Institure as the Shroud.

No, no, you're right, the Brotherhood isn't any better (though I still personally side with them, but that's just bias on my part). The Minutemen are definitely the most good "good guys," but what the Minutemen lack is any way to unify and govern the Commonwealth.

The Institute Ending is the best for the Commonwealth because your character is in control and can choose to fix things to the best of their ability.
BoS is a terrible choice because they have no desire to help the people, the Minutemen are inept and fractured and the Railroad has absolutely no way to do anything but free synths.
All three factions other than the Institute were in shambles before the sole survivor showed up (the Brotherhood wouldn't have even been able to get to the Commonwealth without the player).
