I'm not the guy who wrote it but you generally shouldn't care what the state is from other parts of your code. Instead you probably want your states to be responsible for the behaviors or for setting some other piece of data that they will access. For example if you had some input code you wouldn't check there that the player was in GAMEPLAY_STATE or something and instead that state either enables or calls that system.

Also its pretty cool to see that the author revised his article after our discussion way back when. If you are here man consider this: if we added an option in the pause menu to switch to either battle or overworld how would you propose accomplishing it in the system?

ECS is where you treat your game world like a table in a database.

That's it. That's the whole idea.

There are two reasons to use an ECS architecture. The first is if you have lots of different kinds of entities and you want some behavior to be shared between them, in a way that's hard to model with inheritance (let's be honest, inheritance is a really bad tool for this). The second is if you're doing a lot of time-sensitive updates. If both of these don't apply, you should first consider some other way of structuring your code, like the Actor model, or events and responders.

ECS is not easy to learn. It's counterintuitive for a lot of things. It doesn't pay off unless you're using it at the lowest level of your engine... And you shouldn't be writing an engine in the first place.

Alright, that makes sense. I needed to know when the player entered the dead state is why. Also I'm using Godot, so I guess I could just emit a signal when the player dies so other parts of the code can just connect to that.

I see what you mean. But just because your World is one giant logical "table" doesn't mean you're wasting space when some entities don't have some components. In a typical ECS framework, each component manager is in charge of storing one type of component, and allocating storage only for entities that actually have that component. Most component managers will use a hashmap internally, and even for components that almost every entity is expected to have, the backing store will be broken up into multiple arrays based on some notion of a "generation" (ie. time of creation) that can be easily encoded in the entity ID itself. Read up on the Bitsquid/Stingray engine, for example.

Storing the components non-contiguously is also a problem. Splitting up tables based on what components must and must not be present, must be present together, etc. is a really good solution. The way I see it, you have a triangle. Uniformity (i.e. using only one table) doesn't really accomplish much, but it involves a significant tradeoff of cache efficiency.

Oh, you mean the guy who makes a tutorial about Asteroid? I am at it's episode 5, but unfortunately most of it's coding so far isn't going to help me make a 3/4 view game.

Anyway, anyone else having issues with WEBMcam? All versions crash for me by just starting it, the oldest version that has a low size FFMPEG runs normally for me, but the file sizes are huge.

The Asteroid tutorial gets you to become more familiar with Game Maker, and slowly eases you into more complex topics. Now that you've done the Asteroid tut, try watching some of his other videos and see how they can apply to the game you want to make. I recommend this: try to make an objMain and look at his State Machines tutorial to make a global game state machine that keeps track of all the states of your game. His tutorial talks about how states are applied to the player, but you can apply it to the entire game, too. (Pausing, title screen, gameplay mode, cutscene mode, etc...)

I know this is just some stupid meme thing but it's not even bad really
the only issue I had with it was that the default mouse sensitivity is WAY too high but that's no big deal
it controls well enough and I didn't see any bugs
one thing I would change is that when you're jumping high into the air like off a spring or whatever, you would want your shadow to be below you to show you where you're landing a la mario 64

good controls great music, pretty good enemy variety, graphics are meh but they get the job done, and solid weapon variety make this demo a fucking solid package
one actual issue I had with the graphics (should have taken a screenshot of this) was in one of the rooms it was kind of hard for me to see at a glance which part of the background was shit that I couldn't fly through so I kept getting hung up on walls, I imagine that would be pretty frustrating against tougher enemies
good stuff though, add a little but more depth to the exploration (secret rooms and other stuff to find) and this game could legit be better than binding of isaac

I've been devving for a year, nothing amazing, mostly jam games. I want to work on something bigger but I have no idea what to work on. I have like 5 ideas, 4 of them are about the same difficulty, one is harder. But all of them are above my skill level, I think.

I get that this is still "proof of concept" stage but this had almost nothing going for it

I use RamDisk to make a 4 gig ram drive so theres no IO bottleneck, and so my SSD doesn't get worn by the temp files

There's no absolute definition of how many polygons is low, because 20 years ago things that we consider low poly were the top graphics at the time, and 20 years from now our current games will probably look outdated as well.

But yeah low poly is using as few polygons as possible to achieve a look. I'd personally say gamecube era graphics and earlier is low poly, as well as handholds, PSP, 3DS, etc.

Well it's not.
I put the function "spawn_player" in the file "spawn.lua" in the same directory as the main file. I put 'require "spawn"' at the beginning. Using "spawn_player" and "spawn.spawn_player" both don't work, same deal with 'loadfile "spawn"'. Naming the function "spawn.spawn_player" didn't work. I tried 'require "spawn.lua". Putting "spawn = {}" at the top of the second file, and neither did "local spawn = {}".
I tried most of these in combination with the rest, nothing fucking works.

Minor quirks
No feedback when you get hit by most attacks which is more noticeable since there IS feedback when you hit enemies.
Also sound effects feel very loud but that is probably cause no music, I'd get some random generic music to fill it in for now.

I feel like your default movement speed should be faster. I feel like you shouldn't be allowed to just hold your shield up 24/7. It trivializes like 99% of the fights so far.

Game crashed during old lefty fight. Speaking of old lefty, he is a fucking cunt that heals too fast. It is really annoying for him to run like 10cm and heal instantly and do it over and over because I bring him under that healing threshold while he is healing.

Either make him heal slower or limit the amount of times he can heal at a single moment. I was only able to kill him by abusing multiple hits.

The next thing is that you can hit enemies incredibly fast if you look slightly away. Your swing will hit him, then when the animation finishes the sword will hang in the air and hit him again and then you swing again.

You can turn 2 swings/hits into 5-6 hits. Pic related.

I feel like if the game only has attack/block it would get boring quick and I recommend you introduce some alternate methods of attacks. Different weapons or even projectiles.

1) Either lose the stamina, or tie something else to it, like weapon swings or shield up duration/hit threshold
2) The fog is fucked, draw the lines from the internal walls, I did a little mockup.
3) Should fireballs clear the fog? Either make it "lighting clears the fog" or "character's line of view clears the fog
4) More about the fog: not sure how you want to go with it, but usually only the dynamic objects, i.e. enemies/traps/etc are obscured, and the general level geometry is visible, or at least becomes visible as you progress through the level
5) Make the fireballs recoil from the shield! :^)

All the aforementioned stuff is obviously my own preference, but hey, you asked for it. Overall pretty good start, get to it!

Your frametime never goes below 16.6ms, which means that even if it took less than 16.6ms to draw it, you're not counting it right. You're counting the time between frames, which will NEVER be less than 16.6ms if you're locked to vsync.

Thus making it completely pointless to even show the frametime value.

Here is an example of how it should be done, even if the game is looked to 60 fps, I'm still getting accurate times on how long it took to actually draw a single frame.

I am using XNA's GraphicsDevice, the primitive structs, effects and input. But everything else is written by myself.

Custom font compiler/renderer, sprite batch, etc..

Even have live reloading of assets/scripts (you can edit a texture while the game is running and it will be reflected inside the game).

the music was kind of short but it was very good
most of the sound effects were pretty good but the voice the character makes when he gets hit is really bad
not 100% sure if I like the slower and more deliberate nature of the combat as compared to SotN but it definitely carries a good weight to it and you can still back dash cancel attacks so it works
not much going on with the level design so hopefully you'll have some puzzles or something in the future
metroidvania is my shit so I'm pretty excited for this one

There was no art, everything was just a solid color square. It had funny dialog for everything, like walking into a wall or getting attacked.

Well I am a programmer, and yes I'm an enginedev. Monogame just takes care of sooo much of the underlying technical mumbo jumbo you have to take care of. It is pretty cool.
