Thanks, what about movement?

If the character moves towards the horizon at a constant speed, in 2d it will go up constantly slower and viceversa

In a platformer, what should you do in the unfortunate event that the player object manages to directly overlap a solid object over their origins, in their middles? I thought I wanted to search for peasant and raggedy vagrant references for my villagers, but then the thought of pilgrims popped into my head.

After some google image searches of people who do colonial reenactments I'm pretty much sold on modeling and texturing all the humans based off of pilgrim/colonial garb.

I figure if I can keep this pace up, I'll have all my assets modeled in five weeks.

As far as actual real gameplay, the doors have collisions now, and you have to press a button to open or close them.

I haven't used all the wepaons yet. But so far I like the bouncy bullet one. It is kind of hard to tell the weapon icons apart, they all look basically the same, but that could be because I haven't played enough to memorize the differences.
The art is great, but the current level music feels really out of place, it sounds like something from a happy forest. The tab icon in the controls menu was confusing, I couldn't tell what it was until I went into game and started pressing things. I'd like to remap the shooting to the arrow keys. I can't stand it when I put my cursor on something but the bullets shoot somewhere else because it's locked to 8 directions, I'd rather just use keys to fire so I can aim in the 8 directions easier. The boost also had no remap option so I didn't even know it existed until I got an upgrade that said something about a boost.
Overall nice game, and good aesthetic, can't wait to see more progress.

I'd set two y points, one for the closest the player will be, and what scale it should be, and another y point for maximum distance/minim scale. So then whenever the player moves, just

percentDistant = currentY / (maxY-minY)
scale = percentDistant * (maxScale-minScale)

or something like that

Question:

Can I use code like this to prevent an array from looping back to 0 when its too high? I've tried to avoid arrays until now due to inexperience with them but they look pretty tempting for an item system.

if itemArray > 2 {itemArray = 0}

Better yet, how would I go about checking if the next entry in the array exists, rather than calling on a value that doesn't exist?

>>154257269
Your projecting 3d to a 2d plane.
This is step 1 in engine dev.
Its not an uncommon subject.

As you said.
viewHeight = charHeight/charLoc.z
So
viewLoc.xy = charLoc.xy/charLoc.z

Get out a pen and paper, draw ur 3d scene from multiple viewpoints and figure what things should be. then figure what formulas correlate those values.
This is how actual developers problem solve, then dont just ask for answers.

I'm an absolute retard when it comes to art. But I need to make a few simple borders, icons, UI panel backgrounds and so on... Really simple stuff I would think. Draw a rounded rectangle, slap some gradients on there, that sort of thing.

Are there any resources/tutorials for that or do I just have to try to figure it out as I go?

Depends on the engine but for me, I only make a top, left, and top-left corner for the border. Then I add them in and flip them accordingly so you get a full border that stays the same size no matter how large or small the window is.

I'm really not a huge fan of "get to the top lava" platformers, but I tried it out

There doesn't seem to be anything intrinsically interesting about it.
Movement seems tight, there's no sliding mechanics or dampening of velocity when you try to stop moving.

My biggest peeve was the wall jump that I couldn't figure out and I didn't feel like replaying more than twice to get to the point where I needed to figure it out.

Overall, there's not much to say. If you're going with the black level look, you might think about rounding the corners slightly.

Just a heads up Demo Day Patricians.

Itch.io occasionally puts the demo day games on the front page. If you don't label your game <name>[DDX Demo] or something similar, it will be very confusing for people who play your game after demo day. They might have the impression that this was the full game or something.
>>
>>154259918
For this kind of level I would recommend either going the autoscrolling screen route or adding some rubberbanding to the lava. That way you can give the player little breaks once in a while without having to just slow down the lava completely and sacrifice difficulty. I agree with the other anon that the wall jumping was kind of confusing. It might help to add a little delay to allow the jump even after leaving the wall so the player can change the direction button before hitting the jump button and still execute it. But if you are going for a super technical platformer or something then its probably fine as it is now.

Canus is a great mystery of agdg.

Consider the fact that before he was posted, the thread was already balls deep into a terminal shitposting episode. It wasn't until several ironic posts later that Canus was actually posted, so that means

1) Canus could actually be from the original guy who may or may not have actually been mad
2) Canus could just be a random pic grabbed from deviantart as b8
3) Canus could have been a different person hoping to capitalize on the attention to receive critique, perhaps expecting positive results, but things went terribly wrong

Truly one cannot immediately understand the nature of Canus, for the moon cat is subtle and un-intuitive in his ways. Together with KeK and Gorilla Munch they form the New Triumvirate of /vg/, which has replaced the previous Meme Triumvirate of Rustling as well as the Three Living Gods of the Tribunal Temple.

-Thalor Sayroni, former Archcanon and Patriarch of the Tribunal Temple of Morrowind and current Grand Magister of the Cult of the Moon Cat

I was trying to fix this by allowing players to hold the jump button and just hit left or right, I will try to make it so you don't have to be perfectly on the wall for the jump

I'm not in love with the lava level idea right now, it was something I thought of a few days ago because I really wanted a level for demo day. It seems like most people hate it so I will probably drop it and try a different type of level design.

Thank you for the input! If I do end up keeping a lava level in the game I will definitely add some rubberbanding to the lava

Yeah the complaints about lack of feedback from destroying stuff or getting hit have been a trend this demo day so I'll definitely look to improve that. So far most of my efforts have been going towards content, but I need to do a tidy up soon and that'd be a good time to implement such things.

Not a huge fan of bullet hell, but tried it and beat the stage 1 boss.
The game seems fine for what it's doing.
Spiders were hard because they didn't seem as predictable to me, where as with everything else in the first level you could plant your feet and kill everything in some position somewhere.

Boss was pretty fun with the giant crusher orbs, took me a second to realize they went where ever I was. I died twice on the first stage.

I played only a tiny bit of stage 3 with the exploding ghosts. Seemed like it was going to get harder from there.

Not much to say other than art polish. Maybe powerups or something to give it more depth? I feel like I'd get bored. In Neopets, there was one where you would get different guns and powerups the whole time and some of the guns were really cool and others were shit. Not sure what type of game you're going for though.

I liked the halloween theme

I grew up with tabletop so the hit/miss dicerolls were totally fine to me, also I'm an old fuck and played daggerfall first, then morrowind, then the others. Every TES game since morrowind has continued to depart from that trajectory and it's really sad because it was such a good experience that I still keep hope up that the next one won't disappoint. I mean, oblivion and skyrim are "pretty good games" but they really peaked (normalizing to like, the context of the year each came out) with morrowind.

Also full voicing is such a massive limitation on resources, and so idiotic because nobody's going to sit through the speaking when it's so much quicker to read. The later games just really shift the resources to flashy shit that doesn't mean anything in the long run. Skyrim NPCs should not act like they have alzheimer's, but they only care about the most basic kind of realism, the kind you can throw in a trailer at E3.

Progression was a thing >>154263210 pointed out as well, my initial designs for the game had an upgrade shop and I still haven't ruled it out. Stuff like armour upgrades to reduce damage taken (which is one of the reasons for the health system) and rate of fire increases.

Right now all the levels I've made are unlocked from the start, but the goal is to start with them locked and they unlock as you finish the previous level. The bonus levels will be unlocked from getting a par score in x amount of stages, which I think will boost the feeling of progression.

It's nice that you liked the first boss's side crushing orbs, some people I've shown the game love them and others hate them.

I'm going on tour with an orchestra for the next few days so I won't be able to update the game for a while, but my current priorities are:
1) Enemy and player feedback
2) Basic sounds and background music
3) remove the cheats that I accidentally left in the game

I am not a fan of this control scheme because it is very tiring to play on a tiny japanese desk.

The patterns are mostly pretty good but in the beginning the player can cheeze most of it. ZUN tends to use at least a few aimed bullets to require the player to do at least a bit of movement.

You probably want to use the hide and lock cursor options in Unity. These options may be buggy though and if they still are you can just use the windows mouse api directly.

>>154262469
>I will try to make it so you don't have to be perfectly on the wall for the jump
I would do this by making sure the player was on the wall within the last x amount of time and having a sanity check on the distance as well in case the player got teleported or some crazy shit.

This limit is not enough for a review

I'm not gonna cover what everyone else already said (other than that I still don't like mouse for movement myself).

There is not much of a scoring mechanic. Not sure if you don't plan on doing one or haven't gotten to it. If it's the former, I highly recommend you introduce a scoring mechanic since that is the lifeblood of shmups. A good scoring mechanic will carry the game a long way.

With what you have I do want to note that you should really consider toning down the amount of points you get by bombing. Bombing gives a RIDICULOUS amount of points. I did stage 5 with no bombing and got 65k as I hit the boss. While here I got 432,000 by wave 5. Most of which is from wave 1-3.

Lastly I disagree with the other guy about the patterns being bland. There are a lot of cool patterns (the spider boss with the horizontal giant orbs is one that comes to mind).

I just think all the nice patterns during the stages become bland and boring because of the wave based design of the game. Also think you should at the very least get enemies to move, even if it's left and right or a bit in a circle.

Also it's really easy to get shotgunned without noticing. Like if you fuck up and get hit, you can immediately get hit like 8 more times if you walked into a wall of bullets.

Moving enemies is something I can just whang together though and it's the first time someone's asked for it. I've been thinking about it myself, so that's going on The List.

The problem is that the game is fun, but it's not like super fun or anything... in the indie gaming field it is about average and the mechanics themselves aren't some super original thing as well, so it's pretty obvious that i won't make it big with it, which in it self would be fine if the game was still super fun for me to make and play.. but i am not sure if i should continue with a project which i myself consider only average fun now.. specially if there won't be any money from it either. Luckily i only spent a month on it so the time waste wouldn't be huge.

No you can absolutely tell the difference between 144 FPS and 120 FPS if you have a 144hz monitor.

There is no 'max' limit but there has been research done on this mostly by the military for airplane pilots. However I don't remember the result offhand, it wasn't very impressive and even they agree the test wasn't very well done.

To engine devs

So basically, in OpenGL, beyond setting up data pretty much everything else is done in shaders?

The programming in your language like C is picking when to do certain "OpenGL" things like switch your shader objects, but for the most part all the "cool" stuff is done in the shaders and that is also where you will gain the most efficiency gains if you set up your rendering code to have OpenGL switch state as little as possible?

Also does anybody have a good source on implementing PBR rendering? Don't care if it's math heavy as long as they explain the terms.

I'd suggest making your sword attacks more impactful too, consider making monsters flinch and get nudged back, power attacks should send them flying back further. The shield bastards should at least bounce away when you hit them.

and for pete's sake give us a shield or something for the arrow fuckers. Or at least don't make jumping consume stamina
>>
>>154260852
I'm not a regular /agdg/ lurker but I might as well give some feedback here.

Your game is a fun little game. Especially the menus and score screen make it really feel like an arcade game, which is a big plus. The actual gameplay is simple but somewhat engaging. The levels aren't too different, changing the placing of the objects makes it a bit more interesting. I think changing the levels' color palettes every now and then (even slightly) would give the player a feeling of progression.

Escaping from the 'van Helsing' becomes pretty easy once you get the gist of it. I was kinda hoping for more of them to show up later on (admittedly, I didn't play too far). Problem would be that the level size is ideal for this kind of game, but more enemies would require a bigger level or it'd be too crowded.

Perhaps more challenge could be achieved by introducing trap doors, or even a slow moving van Helsing's assistant that would either grab you or just kill you like the vampire hunter. Stationary and slow targets can easily be avoided, but they could create interesting situations with combination with the fast moving hunter.
>>
>>154269115
I think the opposite.
When you get to larger resolutions / color count, and the amount of pixels you have to deal and frames you have to animate gets exponentially worse.
Eventually you might as well just do non-pixel stuff.

Small resolutions are ezpz to work with

I'm still not sure about enemies being moved by players attacks, I'm implementing charge attacks so those will do so for sure.

What about being able to deflect the arrows by attacking them with your sword? Of course I'll make them faster to not make it too easy ;^)
>>
>>154269431

Well therein lies the problem if you consume stamina to swat the arrows away, you'll eventually hit a point where you have no stamina to attack -them- or evade anything else

how does my camera system hold up?
it can snap to lines or bounds or have interconnected lines, have easing values for different nodes, any camera area can have any angle and will ease between them smoothly. You can lock to platforms or have areas on a rail or have the camera peek upwards towards a point of interest. Everything from lines to bounds to points works in 360 degrees.

this only shows where the destination of the camera is, it smoothly travels to the destination and gives a locked middle ground for moving back and forth without the camera scrolling

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you have enjoyed the game.

I have some ideas on what I want to make for this game that tie pretty close to what you mentioned.
An online hiscore system is already in the works, so you will get a hiscores table plus an "enter your name" screen at the end to make it feel more arcade-ish.
Small variations on the levels, and the villagers are probably the next thing I'm going to work on, since most feedback I have received this Demo Day has been around people asking for that.

Again, thanks for playing and for giving me your feedback, and keep an eye on the game if you liked it. I'll keep working to improve it as much as I can.

that combination of extremely fast movement/camera and ratio of player::screen means you really can't see what the shit is going on

Anything sensitivity-related you'll want to be adjustable because different mice have different DPI, so something that works fine for you might be significantly too sensitive for someone else or super sludgy for them.

If you don't know anything about programming go for programming basics. Game maker is usually a good start, try to avoid Drag and drop and jump into gml.

I figured it out; it was just a matter of separating physical and sprite positions to separate numbers. The decimal numbers in the position caused the little jitters when moving vertically because my gravity constant is 0.25.
>>
>>154273883
I did the same thing on my game but depending on your pixel density that might also cause some problems when players are trying to judge hitboxes/etc. If that is the case then you need to also move the physical positions to integer positions but keep a movement buffer that allows for movement below 1 pixel per frame.
>>
>>154273957
Collisions and hitboxes work just with non-integer positions in my game, it was really just when I started implementing a camera that follows the player the jittering issues arose.

>>154275591
if you fantasize about fingers shaped like penises, you may be gay. similarly, anal stimulation can be straight, but if you prefer dildoes shaped like real dongers, you may be gay.

i mean your pseudopenises could be sleek metal space-age implants, but in that case why don't you just say you fantasize about women with (space-age) strapons?
>>
if you want something to go into your butt instead of the other way, you're gay.
>>

>>
>>154275746
now anon, as much as i want to spread the word that at least half of you are secretly bisexual and ashamed of it, this is just ignorant. anal stimulation is as much for men as it is for women.

also what if you ARE gay but you only like to be the giver? by your definition you are actually straight because you like to penetrate with the penis. this is just confusing and leads to fallacious reasoning.
>>
>>154275691
You're compleely missing the point of my fetish. When a futa gets aroused it is obvious because the pseudopenis will get erect. She will have trouble hiding the fact that she is aroused. If the pseudopenis did not have a lewd shape she would have nothing to hide.
>>
>>154275882
>anal stimulation is as much for men as it is for women.
That's what gays-in-denial tell themselves, and kikes tell everyone else.

>also what if you ARE gay but you only like to be the giver? by your definition you are actually straight
That means you're taking one definition and making it the only definition like a braindead mongoloid.
>>
>>154275895
the entire point of your futa fetish is a signal of arousal? are you a preteen? normal women have signals of arousal.

i think you are making excuses for the fact that you like to see a big hard cock. and there's nothing wrong with that. the more you accept yourself, the more you can enjoy life, porn, and sex.

Dur 3mb limit and this is 7mb.
And even then, like 95% of the projectiles don't show because of the compression from the converter to webm I used. There's roughly 4,000-10,000 projectiles on screen at any given time there, but they don't show. Can anyone recommend a way to convert from mp4 to webm that won't lose so much detail?

Anyway, this is a prototype I just finished that I thought I'd share.
I wanted to see if I could get thousands of units and tens of thousands of projectiles working very efficiently.
The tracers suck visually, and they just disappear without any explosion effect when they run out of health, and the behavior of the units isn't very human, but the things I wanted to see if I could efficiently make work are there: Allies avoid colliding with each other, but can end up colliding with and bouncing off enemies, and the AI has some high fidelity to it such as how each unit will shoot at targets it's gotten a lead on instead of just selecting one closest target to try and shoot, and units avoid shooting allies.
On desktop hardware, I think I can get more around 50,000-100,000+ ships and hundreds of thousands of projectiles. Not positive yet.

I used OpenGL ES 2.0 here, which was a fucking mistake. This would have been a lot easier with GL ES 3.0 and that's what the hardware I'm targeting uses anyway.

i think ive narrowed down the problem a little, but the way i have the characters set up is, both characters have their own controller and the first character spawns and then possess the second character, with the movement for the first character on the first contoller. I had the movement for the second character on the first contoller and that moved the character but it didnt fix the control rotation, so ive now moved the movement and control rotation onto the second controller as i feel this should work but the problem is that the second controller isnt receiving any input

This is the time where you refactor your code and fix bugs. You probably wrote a lot of shit code on the days leading up to demo day and its' time to fix it.
>>
>>154280039
I didn't get a chance to play demo1, but I downloaded demo2, and I haven't had any problem with the camera, and no bugs that I've seen.

The movement feels good and responsive, I enjoyed playing it. Using the back weapons with Q and E is difficult while moving, but this is fine since the keys are rebindable. The back laser cannon does feel too powerful though, it should require a lock-on to fire it. The weapons could maybe use some way of limiting them, so that they aren't just spammed all the time. I'd say give them limited ammo clips that need to be reloaded, but infinite reloading.

Overall I'm liking this a lot, and excited to see more.

>>
>>154284368
Nope, no flocking at the moment. I haven't put much into the unit behavior so much as just getting so many objects working on low level hardware(like the Nexus4, or maybe something slightly better like the i5-2500+HD3000)

They do avoid ramming into allies, and flocking is fairly similar to that, however they don't enemies and will collide and bounce off enemy ships.

The thing with flocking by itself is doesn't look terribly human. I need to get them to form squadrons which is much more complicated than just making nearby ones try and keep a certain distance.
What I was thinking instead is that I may have 2 smaller 'drone' ships that are wingmen for each piloted ship, rather than dynamically forming them. Though with how I've made this tech, I could feasibly do them dynamically. That would be the only extra data store I could reasonably add, though.

Hey anon, could you please help me out?

I'm using a big spreadsheet .csv file which I import into GM as an ds_grid.

However in this spreadsheet I have information such as spell name, mana cost and spell script spell_firebolt which is the script to execute when casting the spell.

All the data in the sheet can only be imported as string or real. It doesn't recognize spell_firebolt as a script.

So after import, I want to cycle through the ds_grid and change all such strings as spell_firebolt into a real script value.

How can I do that? Just doing real() doesn't work as that spell_firebolt is just a string "spell_firebolt".

Thank you

I've been writing some scripts for a 2d platformer demo in Unity, and I just got the GameMaker Pro humble bundle. Is GameMaker "better" for 2D? I have no need for 3d graphics.
>>
>>154287432

If you're starting out, GM is easier to get into and learn, and some of the best 2D games have been made in GM.
>>
Eh, let /v/ be /v/. They're a bunch of lowest common denominator AAA gamers trying desperately to build up "gamer cred" by bashing the single most popular thing at the moment and nothing else. Hipster pixel games are "in" right now, so they've got to impress others with their taste, so they deflect.

They're the worst kind of hipsters: the hipsters too hip to be hipsters.

Pixelshit has more success because it's the only way indies actually release a game. Try to make a platformer with real art takes a lot of work.

I would say this and maybe dummy with no AI and infinite amount of lives to practice combos and stuff, kinda like the training mode from MUGEN.

Also not sure if a bug or not, but playing with Zero if I changed direction (pressing left then right or right and left too fast) he would dash and sometimes that could make you fall accidentaly.

It doesn't matter. Any art style is fine as long as you want to make it. The ONLY problem with "pixelshit" is 90% of the time it's programmer art or shit artists. But high res art can also be shit. So it doesn't matter.

Yeah, you can moonwalk by hitting two buttons. It let's you dash backward while staying facing one way. It's probably too easy to do accidentally, but once you figure it out its really useful.
