>>

He is recognized because when he is one of the first people to constantly post progress, only for shitposters to get jelly and lose their shit. If you weren't here for early AGDG, please shut up.

Also he started off basically not knowing anything about game dev in the earliest threads. He eventually self taught himself C and C++ and made his entire game's engine in scratch. He started making progress despite people thinking he should've given up years ago.

Eventually it seemed like he did, especially with all the jealous nodevs trying to hack his facebook and shit.

But despite that he's back again and I'm glad to see him still making his game. If you're not, that's fine. Shut the fuck up.

Been playing around with a turn based engine in gamemaker but I haven't been able to animate the sprites no matter what using the engine's code. I'm fairly new to gamemaker so what should I do? There's an overworld player object with sprites that animate properly but the battle animations don't play, all are stuck on the first frame as if I used sprite_index=0 and image_speed=0.

How do I do this? Not looking to be spoonfed but pointing me towards the right direction would be great.

My dumb little agility platformer is coming along nicely but something struck me. I have no idea what it is that will actually compel people to go through a level in this. But I can't even answer that question about platformers I enjoy playing.

Please spoonfeed me AGDG. What is it that gives a platformer intrigue so that you actually want to progress? In Mario there's no character progression and there's no getting to the next story beat or anything. You're basically just running right until the game decides you've run right enough so I'm at a loss for what actually makes that fun.
Pic is my most recent progress, these NPCs that you can talk to.

>Also there's an issue where hitbox's get cancelled with Charlotte's attack animation.
What? I looked through the video but I didn't see anything like that. If one of the puffs walked through her she probably had mercy invincibility, the flicker effect is every frame so if there's any dropped frames in a recording she appears solid during it. Which I should fix...

@jasozz re: dungeon break
rooms always spawning and being visible in the top left corner of the map is weird, weapons persisting after Restarting post-death is weird, sord being crazy broken is hilarious
it's not evident that the shopkeeper can only refill guns and the magic dealer (why is his map initial P?) can refill magic. also, conversations overall use too many keys imo; J to skip, Enter to continue conversation/confirm, E to begin conversation, escape to exit seems like it could be simplified. it also appears that some chests can be collected an infinite number of times by returning to an uncleared room after getting the loot inside (the chest will respawn filled and shut). also don't remove the moon walking because it's hilarious, the rest of the game's great, sound design and art especially (i fucking love the bone percussion section in the catacombs music)
>>
>>154230251
there are major points people always forget when spouting "lmao >reinventing the wheel"

1) many popular engines require you to pay money for them. but even if you can afford it, you still might not want to give money to such things
2) many popular engines are proprietary software, which is a cancer itself to many people
3) licensing and maintenance. you are depending on your right to use someone else's shit to make your game, and you are depending on them to maintain said shit. this is undesirable for some people.

making your own 3D engine is generally too much to ask from the average dev, but for 2D it still might still have some advantages depending on your game. I certainly wouldn't use an existing engine for a VN or a text game, for example

As well as legitimate issues with workflow. For instance, Unity and GM severely restrict where you can actually write code in their framework.
>>
>>154231194
Most of them online(unity,GM,.) only require to be payed if you're making x money with your game sales. If you're making that much money you could as well buy the engine

>weapons persisting after death
That's weird, I've never had this happen. You mean after you hit RESTART from the Game Over screen, your inventory remains?

> Replenishment menus aren't super clear
Fair enough. I'll try to figure out a way to make this clearer. P stands for "Priest" btw

>Infinite Chests
This only happens in one room that I know of. It's a weird bug where a chest assigns itself to the wrong room, so it doesn't properly detect when its been looted. Trying to fix it but its hard to replicate reliably.

It'd actual be a lot of work, Flixel doesn't have pixel-perfect collisions like that. It's entirely based on having square tiles. And I'm not a programmer so I have no idea where to even start to put stuff like that in. I actually started using it just so I wouldn't have to deal with collisions, I first tried FlashPunk and I was lost. The fact that it's already there in Flixel was the deciding factor for me.
I've already looked around for how you'd implement slopes and shit and it's definitely beyond me. I'd rather stick with square tiles.

That's crazy weird, I've never had that happen. I'm gonna have to try and replicate it.

Yes actually, the next implementation is going to be dodge-rolling. Just a basic left-right dodge where you're invincible til you hit the ground.
I've toyed around with the idea of shields but I'm not sure how I'd want to implement them. Probably make it so they can only block a certain amount of damage and after that it staggers you and deal the remainder of the damage.

Glad you enjoyed the game!

It sounds like you have some sweet ass real time combat in there so perhaps archery could be all about trick shots.

Also maybe worth considering that people won't notice or care if you decide to just not put archery in at all if you don't like it.

>>154232018
I just can't see medieval fantasy without bows. No rock paper scissor. It's just when you increase your melee weapon skill you get a new move, new spell with magic skill increase, and then when you increase your bow you get turds.

I refuse to do the "shoot three arrows at once" cackapoo. I alwaysed hated that gimmick.

Here are some ideas:

>poison arrow

Really, the best way to deal with the corners is to keep the tiles square and make the player a capsule (or a "rupee" shape).

>>154232607
Just saying that archery is always underrepresented and there's nothing you can do because it's not conducive to deep gameplay without going for cheesy stuff like triple nocks and curved shots and whatever. Rogue is the least combat-oriented class compared to the other two.

if I do things like that, it would come from a magic skill or crafting skill applied to the arrow.

increasing speed, accuracy, and damage is just not as sweet as getting a new animation or particle effects, but that's all that really fits.

multiplayer is cancer though

multiplayer is not about video games, it is about players. it's pointless e-penis competition against some other faggot, metagaming as hard as you can, with story and aesthetics as window dressing that makes for a mind-numbing, repetitive experience

single player games are for people who want to play an actual game, multiplayer games are for LoL tier gen z AIDS who want to shit on each other in a virtual world because real life sees them with zero accomplishments

What about a REALLY hard platformer which would require multiple players to complete.
here's what i mean.
Ideally, you only have 1 life(although i can't think of any good way to add it) and it's a platformer where you see what other players did and where and why they died, so you have to learn from their mistakes in order to complete the level.

if anything isn't clear, ask up i'll try to come up with something. This is short timed answer but i think if you improve the idea, could work out great.

It doesn't matter, the root of the cancer is still there. Multiplayer games, even co-op, are not about games, they are about players. They are driven by socially interacting with one's peers, and posting on subreddits, and watching LPs on youtube and being part of a game's "culture"/community. If that's what you enjoy and want your game to be about then fine, I'm just saying that in my standards of what makes a non-faggot person, it aint the type of nigga who plays DOTA. Those games and experiences are not for me, because I play video games to play video games, not for community.

just add different arrow types, bodkin, barbed, regular and the thing with the bag/round tip that was used to knockout small game.
barbed makes you bleed, bodkin ignores some armor, bag thing knocksout things or something.
Then you could also implement utility shit like burning arrows to set shit on fire, rope cutter tips, blackened arrows that have some sort of bonus if your game hasday/night
>>

Dungeon break dev I hate to say this but as much as I love your presentation, the execution of your game in its current form is fucking -STIFF-

First off, as your leaving/entering your crouch animation, you can't move, and if you try to jump out of the animation, you'll jump upwards but you can't move left or right, that kinda sucks

But the biggest problem is your combat, because your knight is stuck in his attack animations and there's no way to cancel out of them, it makes fighting monsters in general to be very unwieldly, take notes from the metroidvanias you're drawing inspiration from.

Make mid-air attack animations end when the player hits the ground, so they can attack once in the air before they touch down, and then once more when they're on the ground. I see there's an option for a dash move that isn't implemented yet, I'm assuming that's going to be a backdash like in most castlevania games, make sure the player can pull that off at all times regardless if they're attacking or not.

Your short sword attack animation makes it a royal pain in the ass to fight bats that're swooping at you at an angle, though I probably won't have that issue when I find other weapons.

I feel really bad being so critical about this, because I really like your art style and what you got going on here so far but holy shit man start polishing up that gameplay.

To further add to this, I noticed your knight can't attack while crouching, if you don't want to make crouching attack animations for all of the weapons, consider giving the knight a unique crouch attack, like sweeping kick, or throwing some kinda short ranged weapon, hell a slide would work well here.

>>154235328

Hi! I use Unity to develop games and, in the last week, I found out that the game I'm currently developing has a very similar concept as one that already exists: StoneHearth.

So I will not continue to follow this path but, as I already developed the entire infinite + random world and some characters (bipedal Wolves), I want to use what I already developed to make another game.

Do you have any idea(s) of what kind of Indie (small) game could utilize what I already made? Maybe some kind of a Forest Simulator? The Wolves are discardable but I really want some light in how to use the random infinite world.

Thanks for playing the game
As far as your feedback goes -
>Can't move while crouch
This is intended, and the crouch animation itself lasts maybe 4 frames, so I've never had it really affect much of anything
The jumping while crouched thing, that's a bug. I've never tried to jump out of a crouch so I hadn't even noticed. Thanks for pointing this out, I'll have to look into it.

>Stuck in attack animations
What would be the point in timing your attacks if you could just walk out of them at any time? And the metroidvanias I've played are the same, save for backdashing in SotN and similar.

>Mid-air attacks end when you hit the ground
How would this work for anything beyond a short sword? Swinging a greatsword would just end the animation when you hit the ground, making it impossible to jump into attacking with it, so it becomes a ground-only weapon. Same thing for throwing weapons - the throw would just cancel the second you touch the ground?
I don't really think that would work out at all.

>Short Sword

Yeah, it's the starting weapon, and the bats only take one hit to kill. It's just timing. Once you get a weapon with better reach/wider arc, they're cake.

Thanks for playing. Don't feel bad about having criticisms, but I think part of the problem is some people get the idea that I'm trying to make Dark Souls 2D, which I'm not. This isn't going to be a parry-counter-dodge-swordplay game; the combat's much more primitive than that.

>What would be the point in timing your attacks if you could just walk out of them at any time? And the metroidvanias I've played are the same, save for backdashing in SotN and similar.

Yeah I get that, but Aria of Sorrow and the other castlevanias allowed for certain weapons to be cancelled when landing from a jump, while the bigger weapons allowed you to slide backwards while still swinging the weapon. Consider that, besides if your big weapons have a long wind up, the player could take a high jump, start their attack animation, and hit them right before they touch down, giving them more options after landing.

and I mean look at the claimh solias from Aria of Sorrow, it has one of the biggest hitboxes in the entire game and the animation could be cancelled out rapidly, allowing for fast attacks once the player strikes up a rhythm.

And yeah, I don't see you trying to make this like a souls game, you're going for a castlevania style for the combat, so look at high level/speed-run strats for those games, people find ways to cancel animations and shred opponents, it raises the skill ceiling for the game and encourages players to become better.

Hm, there's an idea. The greatweapons and such are coded as a different class of weapons, so I could make them uncancellable. I might try that.

The dash is actually going to be a left/right roll kind of thing. Maybe there's room for rules as to what you can/can't cancel?

After watching that gameplay video from before, and the one from last demo day, I've decided to speed up Charlotte's walk speed by a lot. Whenever I played I just ran everywhere so I didn't really notice this, but if you just walk everywhere you can't jump over anything. Essentially there was no reason to ever walk but most other people who I've seen play the game defaulted to walking everywhere. But now walking is fine! So if you played the demo and didn't like how slow it was or found it frustrating, hopefully it feels better to play now.
I don't know HOW I got hit at the end there. That enemy must have been at the perfect height to barely dodge the attack hitbox just long enough to get a hit in

your attack animations are short like my dick.

>Once you get a weapon with better reach/wider arc, they're cake.
This is backwards difficulty scaling. Yes, it's good to make the player feel powerful with bigger swinging arcs upon finding strong weapons, but don't nerf the shit out of your starting weapon to achieve this effect.
especially with the bats coming from the ceiling and the shortsword having no overhead arc - this is definitely backwards difficulty scaling, as I imagine it's a hell of a lot easier with a weapon that has a overhead arc.

the "touching enemies hurts you" + short attack animations is one of the worst sins you can commit.

I haven't kept up with him for a while now but he used to use a combo of FL Studio and Ableton Live back when he made his first album. He continued to use ableton for live shows for a quite a while.

He's anti-piracy for rich producers like aviici or kanye west who can afford the software. But he still uses a pirated version of Absynth. He claimed to have bought a license later, but continued to use the pirated version because it had a custom skin which he preferred.

doing some good progress on THE WALL but I keep thinking about ways to make my necromancer game more optimized so I can pump out as many skeletons as I can on screen.

Initially I had everyone work with the navmesh system of unity. This ended up bottlenecking at 100+ units. There wasn't any visual lag, but once ordered, units would go group by group, leaving most of the army standing still while tiny groups left to execute the order.

I then turned all the villagers/victims' movements into a boid-like system where they just move their velocity to avoid skeletons and run around, which improved things a bit but it's still pretty bad.

I might have to write my own A* pathfinding to order the skeletons around but that would surely take me a few days to get working. Also, when the battle is going at full speed, each skeleton/villager keeps a list of the 3 closest villagers/skeletons to pursue/flee from depending on a sphere of a certain range around them. Is this a good way to do it? I was amazed by factorio's literal thousands of robots moving about like nothing with no lag, but these are simpler "get target once, go to target until new order". An actual battle has each unit refresh its prey's position every couple of frames and switching targets every few seconds, which increases compute time exponentially as units grow. Is there some kind of algorithm to make huge battles efficient? I can do semi-advanced math.

I hate myself as much as you do. I really wanna shell out all these games some day but I'm a slow asshole. The wall is shaping up to be at the very least original so if I can make some serious dough with it, expect all these past projects to eventually see some love.

It's hard to resist the urge to start new projects though. I wanted to make this "pyromaniac" game where you set things on fire and it spreads everywhere. I try to control myself and channel this energy into THE WALL though.

Vote for the game on greenlight if you haven't: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=718465204.

It's ok if you vote no, I know it's a retarded meme game but patriot mechs are coming

So I made a terrible mistake and even though a LOT of my game is actually done I never accounted for the fact that when the player dies, I'm going to have to actually delete the player object.

Which breaks every single enemy in the game

Is there some way I can make every enemy object check whether the player exists before doing anything without just directly going into the code of every single one and hardcoding it? Like a script or something?

yes i'm using game maker

I have never seen a good "tutorial", they are universally shit and give a poor explanation of the material. The best thing to do is study fundamental concepts of thing, read documentation, read textbooks on the subject if they are available, and ask questions in places where people actually know what the fuck they're talking about. Tutorials are the path to damnation. Or am I missing something here?

Just take a moment to think about this - will you actually have to delete the object? I don't know your mechanics, but it might be possible to just reset some values (set the players X, Y position back to start of the level, subtract 1 from life count, etc)

Just have a boolean on the player "isDead" and set it to true or false in your death method. In your enemies update method (I'm assuming you're using unity?) just check the player "isDead" bool and only attack if the player isn't dead.

Added some new Classes for the game's fuccboi protagonist, Orion.

His power derives from his emotions, so his different battle forms are closely tied to some emotion. The emotion that they're derived from has heavy influences in it's gameplay in some way.

While Subclasses augment the character's playstyle, Classes define the playstyle, so by changing them, you change the character's role in battle. The MC is the only one who can switches classes, and he can also do it mid battle, so he's kinda like a stance-dancey jack of all trades.

I hope this is a fun thing. It sounds fun, at least.
Demo hopefully tomorrow.

Total up the amount of all elements and then divide the amount of each element that's there by the total. It'll give you a number from 0 to 1, which you can then multiply by 100 if you really care about it being in percentage form.

you lower your standards. accept that you're not on other pixel art games' level, and you make a game with the goal of it being freeware because that's all you're worth at the moment.

you make the game for the fun of making it. you draw what you want for the game you want to make because it's fun.

then your art skill level increases because you've been doing this for a few years.

then you make games that are worth money.

/agdg/ can you hear me? I'm lost and so alone.

Here's the thing, I'm interested in making a little kart racing fan game, I guess you could say that my coding experience is pretty much nil, but I know how my brain works, I can only learn by doing it.

My main problem is that I don't know where to start and what to focus on, I intend on laying the groundwork and make the game before getting to the "fun stuff", the stuff I have experience with, which is the art in general.

Since it's a fan game, I won't be able to monetize it anyway, I'll just focus on making a fun experience for fans and learn the process, where do I start? Should I use GameMaker?

M4 Dev here

Would be neato if you guys could answer these questions for me. You don't have to write giant paragraphs, one word answers are enough

Why did you download the game, were you looking forward to it or was it just a test thing?

What was your first impression?

If you had any expectations, were they fulfilled?

How did you feel about the controls?

What did you like the most about the gameplay?

What did you dislike the most about the gameplay?

How long did you play?

How many enemies were spawned when you died?

Did you try to break your highscore?

If you could make one change to the demo what would it be?

If I would release a slightly updated demo would you download it?

Both. I try to test all of the agdg games (that aren't obvious shitposts), and when I saw the gif of the gameplay I thought it could be cool.

>first impression
Pretty neat, but basic and clearly early on.

>expectations?
Well enough for an early demo. The enemies are pushovers and the movement's a bit weird though.

>Controls?
The mechs need a bit more momentum when coming out of a boost, and boosting in the air should stall falling some, like in AC4. The weapons were fine, but the missile launcher thing kinda sucked.

>Like most?
Being able to boost cirlces around the enemies while guning them down is cool.

>how long?
Probably around 20 minuets. Some of that was trying to reproduce the bug I explained on the submission page.

>how many enemies?
50-ish

>high score breaking
I did at first, but then I realized someting was wrong with the light mech, hence trying to go reproduce the bug

>make one change
Give the heavy mech a shotgun in addition to his pistol thing. 2 pistols is too easy.

>Updated demo?
Depends on if it adds content or not.

Somewhat
>How did you feel about the controls?
Sliding feels pretty solid, having weapon zoom would be great.
What did you like the most about the gameplay?
It can be great fun at a high pace
What did you dislike the most about the gameplay?
Getting stuck on the edges of buildings, not carrying momentum in jumps, missle lock x1000
How long did you play?
about ten minutes
How many enemies were spawned when you died?
More than 20
Did you try to break your highscore?
No
If you could make one change to the demo what would it be?
Reduce incoming missle rate or turn down the homing accuracy.

Sure.

Are traditional JRPGs hard to make?
>>
>>154246828

just learn programming, you literally cannot make a decent game with GM's D&D interface

depending on your project goals, you might not even need to be an amazing programmer. for example toby fox doesn't even know a real language and Undertale GML source code contains hilarious shit like a switch statement with almost 1k cases (source: his deleted tweet, and some questionable thread about a decompiler on reddit), but it doesn't matter because Undertale is still a good game and somehow Just Werks™

programming can be frustrating to learn because teaching is very difficult, people very much underestimate what it takes to effectively teach. so most books/tutorials on programming are dogshit, and the programmers who make it are the ones who persevere by reading various sources when they get stuck, trying different languages, and asking questions. eventually after you have grinded through a bunch of exercises by reading books, articles, and googling answers on stackexchange, and finishing small projects, it will click and you will realize you halfway know what you're doing. then you can study an engine like game maker or unity and learn how to script within those engines by reading their documentation or even books specifically about those engines, such as Jeremy Gibson's book (which tries to introduce programming via C# and Unity, but in my opinion rushes through teaching programming too briefly to effectively teach. good for learning Unity tho)

I hesitate to recommend books because I am not a good teacher. DESU the book that helped me the most was Bjarne Stroustrup's Principles and Practice Using C++ 2nd Edition which is an introduction to programming using the C++ programming language. A lot of people say it's better to start with Python but all of the books on these higher level languages I looked into were shit, Bjarne's book actually explains things. Make sure you get the newer header file though which isn't the one linked in the pdf.

Undertale is also not a traditional JRPG, the combat system is Undertale is a fairly unique bullet hell system. Undertale with a traditional turn-based JRPG combat system could have easily been made in rpg maker but it would have just been another rpg maker game with an okay story and art/music, that bullet hell system's integration with the overall story/aesthetic is what raises Undertale from mediocre walking sim to great game.

who gives a fuck

video gaymes are an extremely expressive medium that allow an artist to reach people very easily because making a halfway decent game in 2016 means you are much more likely to succeed. good games at this point are much less subjective than good music, because vidya is an immature medium so competition is lesser. if you really want to go full artiste and promote your postfunk dreamcore jazz or whatever then making a video game that fits such music is probably one of the best ways to do it. Make that game with the amazing soundtrack everybody likes instead of just posting your shit on soundcloud and hoping for a marketing miracle.

but . . . why don't they just like make game

if music is your #1 passion, then make a game with your music. why does a person need to specialize in one thing? part of personal growth is learning new things. don't view it as "tainting muh purity as a musician" or some shit, just MAKE GAEM and put your music in the game. then if the game is good, bam, best promotion for your music you could have hoped for

I never even wanted to be a dev, I originally wanted to write novels but at this point that industry is like playing the lottery and visual mediums are better for my stories anyway. Plus I get the added bonus of also expressing myself with my own art and music. I feel that people who think focusing all on one thing is the only path to mastery are limiting themselves, nobody says you can't be great at multiple things.

Why would you waste your time learning everything it takes to make game when you could perfect your craft and just tack it into someone else.
>>
>>154252503
Also games are way more time consuming to make, by the way.

Time that could otherwise be spend playing or performing music or getting sweet sweet royaltiy momney

too fucking late nerd, Canus (as called by his original filename) is now the mascot of AGDG

honestly I feel kinda bad because posting on agdg can lead to some serious bullying and discourage people from posting here due to toxic community, but at the same time that guy might have just been trolling, and he was being a hardcore shitposting asshole anyway so whatever

good evening guys

do you know the right math to do this in a 2D game?

a source covering the subject would be very appreciated

The reason people don't make JRPGs isn't because it's difficult from a programming aspect, and hell there are so many tilesets available you've got your pick of the lot, it's that they're extremely tedious to make. You've got to map everything, there's scripted scenes, events for interacting with everything, you've got to thoroughly test all the battle values, etc. Huge undertaking, in terms of man hours.

I don't really "know the math", but I imagine you could just get away with this by shrinking the sprite the further away he is from the bottom of the screen.

Can I just say something?

Canus really is the worst person I've ever seen on the internet. He's not a bad person in the same way people on other boards are, like posting mutilated animals or anything. He's just rotten to the core, negative, and a bad person. He's a failure and he can't stop telling us about it all the time, and if it's wrong for us to point this out, then just ban us I guess?

It would honestly be a favor. Because lately it seems this place is an illusion where supposedly it's for gamedev but 80% of the artists looking for programmers are the same raving lunatic. It is hard to keep pouring positive energy into a place that is haunted by this person.

Anyway, that's my only input on the matter.

Fuck you. You're shit and you know it. I hope something comes to you that removes you from the internet for good. I really do. You're so overdue for it.

Why doesn't twitter make it equal for everyone across languages? That is some grade A bullshit. Makes the 140 character limit seem arbitrary as fuck
>>
Earthworm Jim has always been a strong part of my identity and my family. When it first was first released in 1994 it was an obsession. Everything in the house hold was "Groovy" this and "Aaayow!" that. We even named our cat "Evil" like the cat from the game. Then in 1995, you can imagine that we were blown away when there was a TELEVISION series. "Earth Worm Jim! Through soil he did crawl!" we would all sing in unison. My aunt even started calling Homer from the Simpsons "Yellow Worm" because they had the same voice actor. All my Earth Worm Jim memorabilia has been building up over the years and with the advent of the internet I was able to connect to other fans of the franchise. I love everything about his cool, collected personality but also quite erratic (lol, it wouldn't be a funny show without it!) and his suit and laser gun are really the ticket! I wonder what would happen if he wasn't a worm? Haha, I don't want to imagine!

You are right
Apparent_Height=real_height/distance

Thanks, what about movement?

If the character moves towards the horizon at a constant speed, in 2d it will go up constantly slower and viceversa

Does anybody know a simple formula to implement this?
