Hey, first off, I've never been to this thread, so excuse me if I break any customs.
I never really played any fighters other than some Naruto/Mortal Combat/SSBB on consoles with friends. Everything I've tried seemed completely boring to me as soon as you play against anyone of a higher skill level than you (locking you into combos until you're dead etc.).
However recently I discovered DoA5lr and it's damn fun. The catch mechanic makes it feel like you can actually do something about being stunlocked and the combat looks and feel very fluid and "realistic". Here's the catch though, I've never played against any real player other than people who started with me.
How badly am I going to get my ass handed to myself against any real player (I'm about as good as a level 6 A.I.)? How bad is the stunlocking (or whatever you call it in fighters) really? Also does anyone still play this game on PC? And with anyone I mean, waiting times of lower than 20 minutes. I'm asking all this because I haven't bought the game yet, but I definitely would if people are still playing.

Thanks in advance and again, sorry if I hurt any feeling via my incompetence.

In doa you cannot sidestep in the traditional sense, you can only make yourself invincible to tracking moves for 30 frames. You can sidestep the first part of a linear string, only to get smacked by the rest of the still linear string. Sidestepping only matters for the ends of strings, and slow linear moves.

Strings themselves are often stupid, because they can be canceled at several different points, meaning that even if they are unsafe, punishment is difficult because they can always use the followup. If they don't use the followup, and you get conditioned to block, you'll get thrown.

Throws are unreactable and untechable. Run up throw, and canceling strings into throws are the meta in Doa. If you try to call someone out on throwing, your only option is to use a strike, because you cannot tech throws, leaving you open to counter hit if you guess wrong.

Then you have holds, holds last for a long ass time (15 frames) and if you guess right, you get damage. You can do these during hitstun and several moves are designed to be reactable so that you can hold them without looking for them. If you get caught holding you get thrown for extra damage. You will be put in situations where holding is the only way out, but guessing wrong is incredibly punishing. On the contrary, you will have the advantage only for your opponent to get out of a situation because he thought you were going to use a high and you did. Unlike other games where you can do things like this, there is minimal execution or timing required.

Then you have wakeup options. Doa has wakeup kicks on two different hit levels, the mid one is safe, and both of them give advantage to the attacker if they hit. There are few guaranteed otg setups in doa meaning that attempting to pressure your opponent on wakeup can be disastrous

All characters in doa have extremely varying strike speed, and slower characters are not given much to compensate. Characters like Kasumi can literally hit low jab over and over to a any character that lacks a 12 frame mid (a good portion of the cast) and the defender cannot do anything about it without blocking low (leaving them open to a mid), or trying to hold (leaving them open to throw). Moves have very minimal push back so you can get trapped in something like this frequently. Other 3d games usually make 2p able to be blocked standing and make most lows either negative on hit, or very slow and punishable.

Doa has lows that are very + on hit and lows that are in the middle of strings with mid followups, lows with followups themselves, some of which are also mid/low mixups. Combined with throws being untechable and having long range compared to other fighters, you can get opened up very easily.

Then there's the environment. Certain characters have throws and hold that can put you on the ceiling and do 1/3 or even 1/2 of your health. Untechable 12 frame throws in a game with strings that can be canceled at any point. Other characters like Gen fu have low crushes that guarantee free combos for 80+ damage if they land on counter on the right stages. Characters like Leon and Hayabusa can do near death combos on certain stages. Stage select is random so whether you get completely destroyed off of some bullshit or fight in a big empty aircraft carrier is a coin toss.

High level doa is all about making big risky guesses and doing things your opponent isn't expecting, because even with god tier reactions you cannot react to everything a character is capable of. At nearly any given point in time, you or your opponent can make a stupid guess and completely shift the flow of a match. Neutral is all about exploiting free cancels to force your opponent to mash to avoid getting thrown.

The whole game is a long shitfest that drifts between reacting to bullshit and making educated guesses. Landing hits does not guarantee damage, you have to build up stun to get a launch meaning your opponent can counter your out of your own offense. Your opponent can also do a low counter which ducks highs as well, oftentimes putting you at frame disadvantage in the middle of your own combo even though your opponent didn't even make the right guess. You can throw someone for doing this, but the timing is strict and this just opens up cans of even more bullshit.
