How does networking work for strategy games? Do I just have the clients send inputs and then replicate the units or what? Is clientside prediction needed when there is no direct player control that would feel the delay?

There are a few ways to do it but as far as I know, clientside prediction really isn't needed and it's fine to have the delay. Unless it's something like Starcraft, a 100ms delay when someone orders a unit to move is nothing and most people will barely notice.

>>154126507
Dynamic typing should be used in situations where it's explicitly useful.
For a beginner programmer who doesn't even understand declaration/instantiation, and probably type safety, they should focus on learning that and trying to keep things "statically" typed to cut down on numerous small errors they will bump into misusing dynamic typing.

Are you pretending to be retarded? Accidentally trying to put a string into int would produce an error on compilation in any decent language but in dynamically typed languages a simple mistake like that will only lead to an hour long bug hunt. There is literally no advantage to dynamic typing.

How would I do this codewise?

I changed the beam attack of an enemy to be composed of smaller parts that spawn until they hit a wall or are offscreen, so that the beam always fills in the maximum available distance. The problem with this is that if the player hits on the separations, they'll get hit by both segments, doing double damage. Any way to get around this or make the beam fill the available space in a different way?
>>
>>154127903
Invincibility frames, give each set of beams an identifier and track what active beams they have been hit by.
>>
>>154127879
I didn't get steam keys for GM, just the games it got packaged with. I could download GM off their website but I want to utilize the steam workshop
>>
>>154127903
What engine are you using? I'd recommend that you somehow "parent" the smaller parts to a larger "beam" object so when it collides it only counts it as one.
>>
The 5 of you on 4:3 monitors better appreciate the work I'm doing to make sure my UI works properly on your shitty screens.
>>
>>154127903
Separate logic from presentation. Raycast to find the distance and then use a single shape for collision and draw it however.

Trying to Juggle a relationship with your work? I'll advise you to find someone better or invest in a quieter future that can satisfy you both. Don't give up on interacting with other human beings, there will always be someone out there willing to put up with your aspirations, and a warm body to crawl too is the often the best part of a busy day. Yes. there are people that will face ultimatums with their spouses, but others...

So lets say you ended up on the business end of the gamergate shit stick and got harassed, stalked, doxed, ect, so a horrible degree. People that don't know you would literally murder you in cold blood. You are in the industry (tangentially), so you decide to strike back at all of them and prove that women can make games too, are a part of your culture now, and if you don't like it then sorry, gamers are dead.

And this is what you make? Is this a fucking joke? Like a post-modern-irony joke on some level I'm not smart enough to understand? Or are they actually so retarded and incompetent they made a game that looks worse than the educational CD-ROM games I played in 1998? WHO DEVVED THIS?

Is it because artists are simple minded and can only understand games within the scope of Super Mario Brothers, or that shmups rely entirely on design and technical ability to succeed?

Either way, the game is nearing completion, and I've realized the only artist that would be able to live up to the work of a overworked 30 year old Japanese man in the 90's would require a time machine and a plane ticket to get.

First time making a game, decided to make a megaman clone. How do I make an object change sprites while two keys are being pressed in Gamemaker? For example, I want my player object to change from a running sprite to a aiming and running sprite while shooting. I can make my player object use the shooting sprite while it isn't in motion, but it can only use the regular running sprite while shooting. Tutorials, docs give me nothing. Please help me, oh superior, intelligent ones.

Wew I've never even thought of that, is there no integrated GPU? What are you making it in? No graphics acceleration can be pretty hardcore but definitely possible. I would try to reduce overhead wherever possible to get the most performance so C + OpenGL seems like an obvious choice otherwise I don't know, never tried it. I would take inspiration from older titles like Quake which ran well on absolute toasters compared to today's hardware and many of them, like the Quake games for example, are open source so you can dig through the sources.

Here's a tough one for you fucknuts:

>> spr.sprite = carSprites[((int)transform.eulerAngles.z) / (360/carSprites.Length)];

where carSprites length is 24.

I'm rotating an object on its z axis and a different object cycles through its sprites depending on the rotation.
For example, if the initial objects rotation is 90, it does 90/ (360/24), which = 6 -- so it shows the 6th sprite, which faces right.

Problem is, its not aligned perfectly. At 0 degrees, for example, it faces up completely, but at 359.9999 it shows a sprite facing to the left. I want a bit of lenience before it changes sprite. How would I accomplish this?

Made some Subclasses and some skills for those Subclasses for Phoebe.

The stat augments are a little difficult to notice because the primary stat numbers are so small, but Subclasses usually change your stats anywhere from 0-30%, and usually specialize that character into a certain playstyle.

I'll probably make the pop up window a bit bigger later, so I can display the exact percentage changes, instead of just showing the result of those changes.

If by doing yourself you mean ripping the sprites from roms and the music/sfx from real hardware, then yes.

The project started with a team, including an artist, but that went to shit fast, so I improvised until I could find a new one, but the game's this far along without one I might as well run with it.

I didn't think every sprite was ripped. That is just impressive lol.

I only ripped bullets so far, been trying to design them on my own but that has been giving me a headache so I went back to ripped placeholder. (Even worse is I'm using a sprite sheet that doesn't follow any logic. Some bullets are just randomly larger/smaller than others causing a lot of issues and since it is placeholder not sure if I want to deal with fixing it.)

Wow, I didn't think I'd have time to get the journal implemented, but here we are! Within the journal, you can view a more detailed map, which shows which rooms are unexplored, which have enemies, and which are clear.

If a room is clear, you can fast travel to that room, saving alot of time and pointless backtracking.

I'm working in gamemaker, because it was such a great deal, and I need some advice. I'm doing buttons for the first time and I'm like 90% of the way there but not quite sure what I'm doing. I have a button object that gets assigned text and a number in its creation code so I can use a switch statement to handle the level select. It works fine except when I click on a button I want to change its color so its obvious that you've selected that level and I'm not sure how to change it back to the original if I choose another level before actually hitting start.

At first I tried searching all the instances of the button and checking that their code isn't the one I clicked on, but I'm not actually sure how that works and suddenly realized it's probably retarded to go through every single button every time you click something on the screen.
Then I thought instead of permanently changing the color I could play a little animation over the button and display the level preview graphic off to the side or as a background.
Now that I'm typing this I realized that I could probably also save the last button pressed as a variable and just change its sprite index back to 0 when I hit a new button but I'm not sure how to do that exactly. I think I would need the ID for that specific instance but then I'm not sure how to find/manipulate it once I have that.
>>
>>154139626
Agreed, it as a horror game would be great. Especially if you could only see them through the camera.

seems like it would play like a generic walking sim horror game like the 1000 games that came out in the wake of Amnesia and Slender. 3/10 overall but if you make it legit pretty it can work. If it's gonna look like you just slapped together some bought assets in unity then don't even bother.
>>
>>154139441
You brought up spoopy element near the end. I think that shouldn't be something that happens later but the main purpose of your game.

Like you should have one mission where you're taking normal pictures, like a tutorial. You can even end the tutorial that while scoring your pictures, you find that you took an extra picture and it is spoopy. That picture then gives you tons of points which causes your MC to switch focus from a normal to a spoopy blog.

I think it's a good idea that needs really good execution or it's gonna fail. Honestly I don't think I would be able to pull it off well.

Make a global goal (finish the game)
Cut that into major goals (complete X by Y)
Cut those major goals into very minor bite size goals that you can work on.

Your minor goals should be something that can be completed once or several times a week. Everytime you reach your goal, you feel excited. You made progress and progress feels good so you want to make more progress.

Keep checking off your goals, and make it something you can physically check off. The actual physical act of checking off your goal is satisfying. I have a 3x2' whiteboard that I have hanging just over my bed I bought for like $15. I put all my goals on that (or any ideas that come up when I'm laying down). Whenever I finish a goal I would take my marker and strike through it.

Completing minor goals get you excited
Completing major goals makes it feel real, like you can actually accomplish this, being able to see the goal gets you excited.

While I still haven't finished my project, imagine how amazing it would feel to actually complete your project.

For most women that is enough, women still hit on me and the still get mad AF when I turn them down. 90% of women are complete psychos, finding a GF isn't hard, its the quality that's hard. And if you are already in UNI you probably missed your chance, women of quality get harder and harder to spot the older they are.

Yo, I'm having problems in Unity trying to make RotateAround get the object to move towards the cursor.

http://hastebin.com/zemaguduqe.avrasm

Ignore the awful code, it's like that because I've been trying to debug it to no avail.

The object is a small aiming reticle around the main player sprite. I know I could "fake" it by making it bigger (as tall as the player sprite is) and using Quaternion.rotate(), but I want to understand why something that *should* work is not. It seems like I'm missing something obvious.

With the current code the object just flais around wildly if the mouse is in certain areas of the screen and in certain others, it seems to work but it either over or undershoots the target.

i have a question! working on a 3d platformer demo, focusing heavily on making the character controller feel. essentially trying to re-create the experience i had first playing mario 64. i'm using velocity to move the character, but I cant seem to emulate the way mario jumps in 64. when the player jumps you can't rotate mario's body to change his direction until you land, which is how reality works since you cant turn in the air without an initial rotation, or some kind of external force. but in mario , even though you cant turn, you can slightly move in 360 degrees while in the air from a still standing jump postion, its just that the character doesnt rotate. so its not entirely true to reality. i need some heavy advice on how jumping is supposed to work in 3d games. how can i emulate mario 64 better, what are the tricks or techniques to good jumping in 3d. should the player be able to rotate and change their direction in the air. what is the best way to "do jumping" in a 3d platformer that gives the player the kind of precision that they need to stomp baddies into the ground a la mario. i dont want my shit to be too floaty or not "right". ive tried playing a lot of 3d platformers and I've probably made about 5-6 different implementations of 3d jump controllers, but none of them seem right, so I really need advice and google has failed me. i know there are turbo autists in here about just about anything so its worth a shot.

Mario 64 development started with several months of just Mario jumping around in a plain room, getting the controls perfect. So don't feel bad if it takes a while to get it down, there is a lot of tweaking to make it feel right.

As for the physics, I'm not completely sure. But allowing for a little bit of air control is good, this allows players to correct for a slightly incorrect jump.

Hear me out.
Make the car a low poly 3D model, it's 10 minutes of work to make a car like that, use that in the game instead of a sprite, you can render it as a sprite so it's still pixel and still flat, and it will have a full 360 degress of movement. Plus you can use the 3D model on the menu or something to look fancy. The world can still be 2D tiles.

IQ test is not a good indication of intelligence. I'm not saying this because I only got 114 on my school wide IQ test. It tests you on very specific things and only those specific things.

It's a good measure for self improvement in those fields as you can retake the test a year later and see your results improve (or worsen).

Also I have never been asked by any employer what my IQ result is nor have I ever been asked by my peers outside of classmates who have literally just finished taking the test years ago.

Yeah unfortunately after doing it for a full year he really has earned the title of most insane shitposter on 4chan or at least near the top of the list. This will be his only achievement in life though.

It's a simple enough plan. Let's say you're a musician and you shitpost in /mu/ but are arrogant enough to play a piano song and post it on /mu/ and people tell you it sucks (because it does and also because they hate you). Imagine if you were to attack them as 'revenge' but your way of attacking them doesn't work because everytime you do they just post your song again and laugh at it to trigger you. This fully breaks you and you stop fighting back and just false flag them. You then start spamming your song everywhere and replying to it yourself a thousand times "omg this is awful" "my ears are bleeding pls never post this gain" "crying.jpeg". Imagine doing this everyday for 10 months, sometimes for hours at a time.

Literally insane. And yet it really happened and is still ongoing.

If you're >>154155280, it doesn't matter. You've already got one implemented in the engine.

Behaviour trees are basically just about suspending and resuming behaviours as long as something more pressing doesn't come up. Coroutines provide the suspension and resumption part. Interruption is just nesting the coroutines - you resume the root, and it may or may not resume all the way down the currently suspended "chain".

The different "states" of the AI are different parts of the coroutine. The coroutine yields back to the caller (engine) when something that takes time needs to happen, such as walking from one point to another - this "suspends" the current state.

Honestly, I wouldn't even try to replicate a behaviour tree if you're going to go with the coroutine approach. You don't need to think in terms of "selectors" or "sequences" or whatever when you can just write straight line code that yields when appropriate.
>>
>>154157164
>Stranger Things
>Twin Peaks
What are those?

X + Y can work, the problem is 99% of idea guys just say X + Y and never actually design and make the game. Also any game can be made shitty, even the most amazing idea in the world can be made into shit by a bad dev.
>>
>>154157092

You would probably need to combine a number of different functions. First something like a toon shader to split into highlight and shadow. Then a some sort of pencil shader to draw those shadow lines.
>>
>>154157164
That is why you should take AGDG's opinion with a pinch of salt. You should really scrutinize what is good and bad advice.

People say Game X + Game Y because it is a convenient way to describe mechanics or general style/ideology. Even Lion King was just Kimba the white lion + Hamlet. There is nothing wrong with describing something as X+Y. The issue is ideaguys who only describe their game as X+Y and nothing more.
>>

Use 4ChanX, filter the obvious keywords (you know the ones). You can also filter image MD5's, there's a simple button to add them to a list, so filter them as they're posted. Of course they keep making edits of the image to avoid this, but you can just manually hide any that slip through by clicking the button next to the post.

And most importantly have stumps hidden. The thread will be nice and clean, and you will never see them again.

have we talked about Nintendo officially on Mobile now?
>>
>>154161909
Awesome, so I can ask you this question then, how do you arrange your rooms into that grid with procedural generation, but have them linked up? Like, I assume that when you re-enter a room everything isn't respawned. I've been trying to figure out how to do this in a way that isn't insanely work intensive, but I'm coming up blank.

Also how'd you do the minimap?

Anyhow the game looks fucking awesome m8, I'm shit at bullet-hell-y games but I'd totally play it.

Is there is trick to stop your GM:S games to stop triggering your antivirus?

Am I missing information the antivirus needs so it activates or something?

I hope you're trolling nigger.

There are 1MA guys on this board right now who produce better placeholder art, not to mention actual gameplay (rev60 is a QTE mobile game FYI). Wu showed off her(/his or whatever) topology for one of those models a while back and the tri count was in the mid five figure range.
Wu is basically a testament to the fact that having a big budget as an indie is meaningless if you lack talent, education and intelligence.

Why the fuck would you make good placeholder art?
They are placeholders, by definition you're going to replace them later so why fucking waste time on them?

Lots of art. Not a lot of finished games.

3d indie isn't easy.

the guy you just talked to is now asleep.

anyway, room generation is done through a recursion: once a room is spawned, it will attempt to spawn a room adjacent to itself, until there's enough rooms. meanwhile it checks how many rooms that new room would be adjacent to, whether it would be on the edge of the grid, etc. that mostly creates winding corridors, then the game goes through the grid and randomly connects some of the rooms that fulfll certain conditions. (for example if it isnt already surrounded by rooms on all sides)

stuff inside rooms is initially read from a room file and and is specifically marked as "room-genereated". room-generated things get stored onto a list inside the room object when you exit, so it tracks changes in the room.

aaaand minimap is wizardry for all I know. it's his domain for the most part.

I'd imagine the minimap is drawn based on a grid that stores if there's a room in a place, judging by your description. I'd really like to know more about that change-tracking thing. GML is a very weird scripting language so I'm not sure how all the data structures and stuff work.
