If I want to make a dash mechanic where you double tap a movement key in a certain direction a la kirby, would this be the easiest way to do it? Using gm

Got the basics of the first part of the main quest implemented. It is not very complicated. There are 4 zones and in each zone there's something you have to interact with. The part I still have to do is the final dungeon, which will be an indoor zone (I don't have any indoor areas yet) so I will probably have a lot more learning and coding to do for it.

I had to change a bunch of stuff with the quest system too. Now quests can support any number of prerequisite quests instead of just 1, and they don't appear in the quest log anymore. Also, if the first task in a quest is talking to someone, it doesn't appear (it shows up in the title as: received quest from x). Also I had to add in a little hack so that if you find a statue before talking to the NPC, it automatically triggers all 4 subquests.

Ok I want to learn a language. I'd like to do this partly by making a game (also open to enginedev). I'd also like the language to be some mix of interesting/fun (example: java is not fun, haskell is fun) and viable for a job (example: java is viable, haskell is not).

I'm thinking maybe C# but I don't know anything about it. I've learned bits of: sql, ruby, c++, R, haskell. Obviously I'm kind of a fan of haskell, with its lovely types and functionalness but cabal was a shitshow last I looked. Plus it's not great for jobs.

I've lurked here a lot so I'm aware of the tools and languages that come up for the most part. And as far as type of game, probably I'd be best served by a roguelike, or anyhow 2D. I want to get into shaders and someone linked some cool shit once but I've lost it by now.

Bunch of only vaguely /agdg/-related shit, sorry about that but thanks any advice.

==|AGDG Weekly Recap|==
Game Name: Retribution (WIP)
Dev Name: HeartTrauma
Tools Used: Love2D
Website(s): hts-johnnyc.tumblr.com
Progress:
+ Enemy can move linearly or via a bez curve. Enemy movement/speed/time can all be controlled by writing a single line of code.
+ Drafted out half of stage 1 from backgrounds, enemies and their placement, bullets, etc..
+ Have an awesome song for Stage 1 made by https://soundcloud.com/prutte-1
+ Players have two shot types now Type-Takumi and Type-Vodka
+ Created a tilemap module though I haven't had a chance to see if it actually works.
+ Drew a few tilemaps, they're ugly as sin
+ Primitive scoring system implemented, enemies drop medals when killed.
+ I have a new job
- All my work hours are incredibly inconvenient

Cool thanks. That's sort of what I was thinking. And plus I've mostly ever done "high level" programming, though I'm not great at that even, but it recently occured to me that I'm not scared away from lower level stuff at all. In fact I could see myself really getting into it.

I know a little about C++, it wasn't bad to program in. A university course I was in got me as far as linked lists and it was all fine. How different is C#? I think unity allows scripting in C# right? Not sure if I'd go as full-blown as Unity, wouldn't mind just sticking to something simpler so I (mostly) understand all the pieces.

In a game that is supposed to have money as a focal point, how do you make sure it maintains its value?

Expensive one time purchases and fees/taxes/temp buffs/consumables/etc act as a reoccurring money sink but at a point you run out of things to buy.

In Harvest Moon once you have upgraded all your farm facilities, woo'd your girl and bought the ridiculously expensive summer home you lose all motivation to grow crops for cash.

Motherload once you bought all the equipment upgrades and enough C4 to kill Satan you were done and minerals lost all value.

Recettear once you pay off your debt you have no use for cash and can sell items for 1 pix just to upgrade the adventure's gear and the final shop upgrade was unnecessary. Kamidori had a very similar problem.

In games with player based economies the economy is usually kept stable by either having massive money sinks for the top ~5% and/or by constantly releasing new content for players to trade money for in addition to standard money sinks.

I'd like to make a game that is >fun beyond the final facility/town/equipment/whatever upgrade. I feel like this may just be a core problem with currency period however considering irl all you can do is have a bank account with 4 billion in it or build more stores with it.
>>
>>153962142
Yeah that's right, F# was kind of on my radar but my vague impression is it was a sort of "dead on arrival" language even though it's backed by heavy industry people.
>>
>>153962208
Don't listen to anyone who will tell you otherwise, C# is a beautiful language. The only problem is that it's tied down to MS.
>>
>>153961824
If you want to get into shaders plus want to get into a "useful" language, then I suggest C++ with OpenGL. C++ is not as painful as it looks like first with OOP and pointers. You can pick that up as you go along and try to optimize your code.

However I think you should check the job application possibilities in your area if this is your main priority. Where I live, I rarely see C# devs, almost never C++ devs, but there is a huge demand for Java devs.

>choose a character with unique stats and the BBEG for the game
>you have X weeks (turn = day) to solve Y mysteries which are a series of events
>mysteries will have a "path of progress", meaning each event can be taken from different location piles - there will be unique events for hospitals, schools, seaside etc
>>
>>153962406
I'm (eventually) relocatable so I don't mind something available strictly in my area or not. Plus, diving into a new language can only help, right? At least experience with C++ could get me good enough to contribute to some open source stuff, etc. Thanks

>>153962380
Ok I'll keep that in mind thanks.
>>
>>153962368
Well, as a language it's not nearly as good as OCaml, which it's based off of. But it's still functional, and can use all .Net libraries, such as MonoGame.

That said, C# has a lot of functional features. It's a hell of a lot more diverse than Java, that's for sure.

My opinion would be to not even try to pick something employable if you want to have fun programming.

Yeah, well I already love R (why exactly I couldn't say, haha, it just feels good) so I don't mind picking up a less-fun-but-employable language, especially since R is not really suited for making games. For a lot of games, I would consider money as merely a way to gate content, similar to locked doors. After the first half of the game, it's no longer relevant so you need mechanics that don't involve money to keep it interesting.

There's also games that just don't go on forever, like MOBAs or 4x games. The times when you have "too much" money in either of those games are pretty much non-existent, because by the time you reach that point the game has already ended.

Well, a class is just how you make an object. If you ever need a self-contained thing with some data and behaviour, that's an object, and you want a class for it.

The spaghetti is another issue that will probably just be exacerbated if you try to abstract it.

As you suggested,

For example, Twilight Princess had the Magic Armour, which provides invulnerability at the cost of Rupees. Even once a player has purchased everything, there is still incentive to collect money. But this is only possible because money isn't the focus.

I'm trying to deal with transition animations in Game Maker right now. Is it better to, after the first loop, use the image_index and a timer variable to force only the non-transitional part of the animation to play, or to separate the transition and the looping part into separate animations and only play the looping part on repeat once the transition has played once (probably tie the transition animation to the state machine transition and have the target state only update the sprite_index after a certain number of steps)? Or is there another better way I'm completely overlooking?

Give the player option to smuggle in or use 'forbidden' items, that confer risk in exchange for superior stats/etc.

Then, have other high-cost items that can mitigate risk or eliminate it for X purchases. It'll sink money while still being >fun for the player and it'll add a little bit of depth to the game. Consider what happens when the player is caught or found out.

what do you think about a system in an RPG where the character doesn't learn new attacks by leveling up?

Instead they have a random chance to learn an attack each time an enemy hits them with one. They then copy the ability used on them.

All you have to do to get over blank page syndrome is accept the fact that your first draft will always be worse than the finished project you have in your mind. I would recommend trying out OpenMPT and 0CC-FamiTracker (use FastTracker II Controls for OpenMPT so nearly all shortcuts are the same as 0CC-FamiTracker), because those are free software that are powerful enough to make soundtracks like these:

https://laurashigihara.bandcamp.com/album/plants-vs-zombies-soundtrack

Otherwise, pirate FL Studio because it's easy to learn and get into writing.

All 3 support MIDI input.

>>153968081
Just be sure that kiting a projectile to a boss won't break the fight somehow because it kills the boss when it should be invuln or something. Or just make that a feature if people can bother to do that.

Also the way those bones home in look weird especially since they penetrate scenery. I'm assuming you will change it but still saying something.
>>
>>153968367
>>153968068
Oh right, from the sounds of it you can also play with actual instruments. If that's the case, you could also consider getting audacity and a good microphone, then recording your shit live... Honestly though, I'd rather you got yourself a MIDI input keyboard for like $80 and recorded your notes directly as MIDI data, then assign virtual instruments (VSTs) to them: It's way more powerful, gives you a lot more control, and easier to record on the spot when ideas come to you, too.

>>153968864
I've considered it. The only problem is that there aren't a whole lot of places where you encounter more than 1 skeleton in one place, due to the verticality of the rooms. If I were to do that I'd want to specifically put together some wide open rooms for them to interact in. They're already set up to somewhat interact.

You can see in the webm here towards the end a skeleton picks up a dropped mage-hat and assumes the mage's behaviors.

Hello friends

So I'm taking the game I was making in a new direction.

The game is in the perspective of Prison Architect for example. The game is focused heavily on party on party combat. What is the best way to do this?

My first idea is to have directional combat similiar to top down instead of having the pseudo-isometric view like Prison Architect. This way I can keep my path finding, map gen, and assets even while in combat.

The second way is to use the currect assets like an overworld and once an engagement happens, or you enter an important area, you are "zoomed" down to a terraria like world where combat and most interactions take place. I'll need a new map generator, and a new control/pathfinding system in order to do this, not counting a lot new assets, however combat could be greatly improved in this way by allowing.

I have no experience in isometric gameplay so I'm not sure I could do that well.

Any other ideas?

One of the boss rooms needs to be based around this mechanic. Skellies and hats/items keep pouring into a room and you have to balance killing skellies before they get an item and ones that already have one. Possibly an averted boss battle where you kill the "boss" easily but a skellies walks up and takes his staff and the real boss fight starts.

That depends, is it a feature now or a glitch you are ignoring. There are plenty of glitches there are unintended gameplay wise and unwanted by the devs and or players but are never fixed.

does the exp really have to be displayed in the battle screen?

The UI looks alright, though it might not be a bad idea to put the options on the left side and all the stats on the right.

make lvl 1 show as lvl 01, the alignment will make it look nicer
same for every other stat
>>
>>153972837
exp is kind of a waste of space
you might want a help bar at the top or something that explains what spells do and stuff
having different names for hp/mp for each class seems kind of annoying since it's the same exact resource and makes everything not align

otherwise, looks good
use webms from now on so we can pause and look at it

Thanks for feedback, I'll use webms. Also, they aren't the same resource, each character has their own subsystem (not HP/MP) so the names actually matter.
>>
>>153972837
Overworld sprites could use some more like like the battle sprites.
Why do you have 4 different, what I assume are, resource points? Why does once character have special snowflake CPU points instead of HP? EP, GPU and NP are not self explanatory.
EXP bars in combat are a waste of space. If you really want them have them overlapped with the name of the character.
Get rid of one of the small trees and move of the of bit trees near the path more. It looks almost symmetrical enough to be annoying.
>>
>>153973346
>I'll use webms
If you need help I use OBS for recording and this for converting that file into a webm:

https://github.com/WebMBro/WebMConverter
>>
>>153973346
The only reason to have an exp bar in combat is if you can level up in combat, and it should be more compact either way.
Think pokemon, the games show exp in combat because exp updates up to 6 times per "set" of battles.
>>
>>153973346
can the player ever level up during a battle? does the exp bar go up during a battle, or only after the battle?

if the player never levels up during combat, cut it.

Ascetically it looks good but in reality everyone is going to take the shortest route they can to get everywhere if possible, even if it means walking past 10 enemies to save 5 seconds. Blocking that route is going to always be mildly annoying. shifting it up one or two squares would probably be enough.

Also seeing that gap in the fence on the other side makes me want to see a bridge from the square jutting in on the left side to that gap on the right even if it is useless. Perhaps a craftable thing, not there initially.

Does anyone know whether it's legal to use real world track layouts in a game freely?

I'm not talking branding, or any associated structures. Not even the name of the track. Just the physical shape of the layout.

I don't want to just assume I can use them commercially, only to get banged for it later.

>makes me want to see a bridge from the square jutting in on the left side to that gap on the right
I think that's a really good idea - I thing players would really dig the game recognizing something small and insignificant like that and allowing them to change it
>>
>>153976572
Take the layout and adjust it slightly throughout
>>
>>153976572
Probably not.

Just like a building they paid people to design the track, I doubt they'd let people replicate it for free.

Probably depends on the track, I'm sure some of them do have the layout copywritted or whatever. I wouldn't be suprised if the Indy 500 has a 25 degree curve for 780 yards leagally protected.

Probably a better question for a lawyer or to directly ask the track owners directly if you really want to do it, not doing it or modifying it enough is the safer option

I need advice on how to do this or how to start

In GMS I have 2 frames, one of the character shooting and the other of him flying back. So what I want to do is hold the shooting animation for half a second while the projectile fires and then have the character fly back and bounce a few times. Does anyone know about how to go about going this? I've looked online and couldn't find what I was looking for, even if someone could point me in the right direction I would be really grateful.

Probably because you only have like 5 shades of brown making up 95% of the image. Try to incorporate some white chocolate, cream, nuts, dripping melted chocolate, candy corn, something to break things up? Ceiling seems too low as well making the upper part look like ass due to its size. Also it bothers me that you have fire near chocolate and it isn't glossy due to the heat or melting.

>>153978783
I went trough your stuff.
Don't take this the wrong way but I think you could work on it a bit more.
Quality over quantity.
It might just not be my cup of tea but.
Some stuff sounds really samey especially the beats.
Maybe put a bit more effort in to your melody and hooks, make the songs get stuck in peoples heads and not in a mall elevator.
Composition is non-existent and stuff sounds improvised.
At some places it sounds like you're just riffing keyboards on the spot and recording than placing a beat over it.
You pumped out 12 albums in 5 years you must be creatively exhausted.

Thanks for taking the time. I've definitely gone for quantity over quality and I agree with a lot of what you said. I've got other musical projects and this one has always been more of a musical sketchpad, although I'm partial to about a third of the songs overall while thinking the others are more filler or just additional content that sounds like the better pieces.

I don't worry about the polish because let's be honest, if I had 3 quality instrumental albums and spent my time grieving over the details the hobby would be a lot less enjoyable and I would probably have less downloads (I've had 500 album downloads over the years).

> just riffing keyboards on the spot and recording than placing a beat over it
Laughed at this because that definitely describes the songs I put up today, while some of the albums from my heyday of this music project are much higher quality

>creatively exhausted
You have no idea brotha. Full time job definitely takes the spring out of your step so the last couple years have been less inspired as a whole. I also split my time with proejcts I am more serious about.

Anyway, thank you for the input

Trying to scramble up some more content for Demo Day.

Added some new skills to Phoebe, who's going to play as a fast, exuberant, show-offey, dual wielding thief character.

The animations aren't particularly interesting, but it's fun to play around with what animations I can do for now.

Just noticed that the numbers are too slow to keep up with how fast Phoebe is attacking. Probably will need to change the fade out speed or the animation itself. Not sure yet.

Not going to bore you guys with the details so in short I need three body types that will basically act like "genders" for a breeding game. Making something fat or skinny isn't an option and making something strong or weaker also isn't an option as those are things you can do ingame. Also a "normal" body type isn't an option, at least not right away as I have plans for it. My current idea is top heavy (big chest, slightly bigger arms and normal legs that look small in comparison), bottom heavy aka thick (slightly bigger legs, huge hips, dat ass, normal everything else that would look small in comparison) and limbs heavy (big arms and legs but normal body that look small in comparison) but I'm hoping someone can give me a better idea.

One dev starts making a game and pretends he suddenly died, leaving only a couple of assets, character designs and basic gameplay concept online.
Jam consist of people "finishing" the game for him.

If you're going throught the code and trying to understand what it does and why, yeah that's an ok way to learn. If you're just plugging in stuff you don't understand, you are probably fucked unless you intend to make completely generic, basic games forever.

I'm a bored NEET with nothing to do and no talent and I'm interested in making a """game""". I'm thinking of something like Toilet in Wonderland or Crypt Worlds or The Beginner's Guide where I'd just make little areas or sequences that are based on dreams, expressions of things that I'm feeling at the time, or just ideas that I thought would be cool. Almost like a journal I would keep for a while, but a game. I have basically no experience and the only thing I've ever used was RPGmaker, so maybe I'll just use that. Do you have any advice?

This is more fucked then I thought

The first part is an example of the code not working (it just ignores a bunch of code when it could of activated it) and the second part is it randomly doing it right when I try the exact same thing again.

It just seems to randomly work when it wants to.

This is the code I'm looking at:

That's bad, at least in GameMaker. Tying any sort of function to a particular image_index is bad news blues clues. I learned it the hard way. Frames can be skipped depending on your room speed and image_speed.

Tie it to something else.

And used assets should be listed in the game page so we can see what game made best use of the available resources
>>
>>154001942
Don't worry, it caused me endless frustrations until I figured it out, myself.

If you absolutely HAVE to tie something to image_index, make sure the image_speed is a number that is always perfectly divisible by your room speed. For instance, image_speed of 1, 3 or 10 for a room speed of 30.

I still wouldn't suggest it if you can find a better way to go about it, though.

>>154002042
Not him, but if you've figured this out I'd love some input. How exactly should you divorce your game speed from your room speed since it's so unreliable? Following online discussions, right now I correct every calculation that would normally depend on the step event by delta, where delta = delta_time / (target_fps / 1000000). The logic makes a certain amount of sense to me. If the delta_time is high then the computer is slow, and the correction increases the calculation outcome, while an increased fps causes delta_time to be low and each step calculation is corrected to be smaller. If it's exactly right, then a multiplication by 1 leaves the calculation alone.

This is what I end up seeing in the actual code, but when I change the room speed to see if motion is actually constant independent of framerate, it varies giving you things like wrong jump heights. Luckily, every single thing that "should" be affected by the change seems to be, which suggests to me that I haven't forgotten to insert a delta correction somewhere. What am I missing here?

The tutorials I've found most useful were here: tudou.com/home/lapoche/item , and searching 'UE4' or 'Unity3D' on ke.qq and checking out the free lessons (which are equivalent to paid english tuts in content). They have stuff for animation, juice, blueprints etc, but the main focus seems to be animation and VFX.

The way it works is if someone uses your IP it weakens it, allowing more people to use it. To protect their IP they have to C&D and sue everyone else they have to give up their IP. The more popular something is, the more likely they are to react.

There is also this thing where they can't make a derivative work if someone has made a fan thing.

>>
>>154006348
Petrella v. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc., No. 12-1315, 572 U.S. ___ (May 19, 2014)

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, disagreed. If you own a copyright, you are under no duty to “challenge each and every actionable infringement.” Petrella, No. 12-1315, slip op. at *16. Rather, you are perfectly free to “see whether an infringer’s exploitation undercuts the value of the copyrighted work, has no effect on the original work, or even complements it.” Id. at *17. Indeed, as the opinion recognizes, a rightsholder may not wish to go after fanart because it benefits the rightsholder. Id. (citing Wu, Tolerated Use, 31 Colum. J. L. & Arts 617, 619-620 (2008)).

Today’s decision ensures that copyright owners will not be penalized for giving fanartists a pass.

And it reaffirms that owning a copyright means you get to pick when and where that copyright will be enforced, if at all.

See, e.g. Paramount Pictures Corp. v. Carol Pub. Group, 11 F.Supp.2d 329, 337 (S.D.N.Y. 1998) (“Perhaps it is the case, as Defendants intimated, that Paramount has chosen to eschew litigation with larger publishing houses, and instead bring suit against a relatively small firm. It matters not. Provided it does not violate any other provision of law, Paramount is free to instigate legal action against whomever it wishes.”)
