I was curious how the classic M&M style would look so I figured out how to do it real quick. It could maybe work. The problem is, it seems like it's purely just a style choice. All their sprites were generated from 3d models and animations rendered out to files, so the same amount of work has to be done regardless. And if you already have models with animations, you may as well just leave them 3d I guess? Billboards would help slightly since it always faces the camera, it would fix my dumb bug where the pathfinding makes them twitch all over the place when they get stuck on something.

Bilboards don't really save you work, at some point I believe they even give you more work because you have to prerender every fucking frame of every fucking animation. For a realistic approach I would say they would be a bad idea, but for something more anime or retro looking they can look pretty nice.

I've been creating this model for some time, and I'd gladly like to hear what you think. To be honest, it's one of my "first" real creation using Blender.

I kinda put zero focus on the hands and feet so they do look like shit. The hair is the newest addition, a bit untouched as well.

Anime often only looks good as flat images and can't be translated into 3D without looking very uncanny. You're better off using photos of a 3D person and adjusting the proportions as needed before slapping an anime head on it

I've always had some 'dream games' I just wasn't good enough to make, so all the games I've been making until now are just for learning, experience and fun. Though of course I'm still far from being good enough to work on my dream games yet, I want to try new ideas to expand my knowledge in different fields.

And also yeah, I've got a bit burnt out on this game, especially when working on the new beat maps and remaking all the animations. I can't imagine redoing all this stuff for other songs and other idols, though I had many ideas for it (this game originates from a waifu jam game idea I had abandoned). Maybe I'll go back to it in the future, who knows.

Any UE4 devs here working on a laptop? Do you have any suggestions? What's your experience working on it?

The tl;dr is: I've been moving around countries way too much, can't use my mini ITX build because I can't carry all of the shit I need, and my current laptop chugs at like 4-5 FPS because it has an iGPU, UE4 is suffering on it.

Up to this point, I've never considered a gaming laptop but fuck, I don't see any decent options that won't make for a miserable experience. I could go back to Unity but I like UE4 much more.

It's the amount of pain the weapon deals, it's a mix of poise and bleed system from Dark Souls - the more pain the bullets deals, the faster enemy will be staggered. Each enemy has pain threshold level, but some of them don't feel pain at all (all golem enemies).

I dunno how to represent demons in the icon, so I use a pentagram for this. It kinda fits the game theme - there will be a lot of sigils and shit.

I don't think that the icons must clearly represent something for everybody, it's more of a shortcut for the player - you can read the meaning of the icons in the window and memorise it for later use without words (I show words only in the large UI windows, like in souls games). All that matters if that player can read the icons after an hour or two of playing the game. I think they're pretty distinguishable.

For range I wanted to make an icon with bullets flying, you can see that it's a three bullets with a traces behind them.
Golem - it's a jewish word for "truth". According to the legend, you can kill golem if you erase one of the letters, because it will make the word "dead".
And for critical - it's just a two "physical damage" icons, i.e. double the damage.

Well, the thing is, golems and demons in my game are not fantasy golems and demons.

Demons are strong enemies, all of them are mini-bosses (no trash mobs), and they look weird, like some shit from Madoka.

Golems are basically an animated objects, flying chairs, paintings, broken statues or robots (picrelated) are golems, there will be no giant glay golems in my game.

The most infuriating thing about the new Doom game is that there are sometimes non-obvious one-way doors that lock you out of backtracking to find all the secrets. I took the top one and copied it, then I added a rough paper texture with the texture overlay layer style in photoshop (set to multiply)

And then I made a new layer, masked it to the previous layer and set it to overlay. Then I just brushed over it with a soft paintbrush with opacity set to pen pressure.

Dunno, ask the CryEngine devs. Mode 0 is the only one they support on consoles where the octree only contains the opacity value. I imagine they don't allow specular cones because sampling lighting directly from a radiance shadow map would look noisy and distorted at anything higher than the coarsest mip level.

it's because the albedo and radiance information in the shadow map are projected onto the voxel surface and it usually doesn't match up at all, they only get away with it by blurring in shadow space and then again in screen space. real VXGI won't work in mainstream games for another few years yet but by then we'll probably have a better technique anyway.

Well there goes that plan. The demo room is now pretty much completed. There is the tutorial room where you can attempt to learn the game, a 'training dummy' room where you can beat up a really easy enemy with a lot of HP [Don't kill it nothing happens], and then the boss room. There are also some Health/MP extenders on the right side and an accessory on the left side. It is not a beneficial accessory.

I am pretty sure you can, but know that image_speed and image_index are variables given to each object: Trying to read the same image_speed/index for several different drawn sprites will result in all of them being modified at the same time, because they're reading the same piece of memory.

I alleviated this by... well giving up, actually. I just placed an invisible object for every single unique image_index/speed, but I'm sure you can probably just make your own counting variable to keep track of each of them individually.

I'm curious if you guys have a different idea of how to implement a "checkpoint" system in a level. I had to think about it for a moment and then the brilliant way to do it dawned on me.

When you start a level, there's a Checkpoint integer value that starts as a 0.
