I try to make my music sound good enough, but I have not a lot of experience. I will just tell you some old and obvious advice:

● Listen to a lot of diferent music. You will get used to the different style of genres and maybe you can take what you like from each one.

● Focus a lot on the chords. From there, you can improvise as you wish, but try to not do the melody first. I prefer to start with the chords and drums first and then mix what I can. In this case, the leifmotifs can help a lot, since all the music from Undertale has a small conection beween songs.

● Learn to play a real instrument. I might not be a professional, but I try to learn as many as I can.

● Develop a good sense of rhythm. I used to play a lot of rhythm games in my childhood, so that helped a lot but keeping the beat is really important to notice small diferences that it can make a big change in the song structure.

I'm only keeping up with OFFtale, even though I think it's poor, but the idea interests me. I don't particularly keep up with the other AUs to know what roles the characters have or the stories behind them - I'll save the art though if it's nice, so I like the more aesthetic AUs, like Outertale (I think?).

As another anon said, it bothers me when the characters aren't themselves any more. I "get" that it's an AU so anything could happen, but it never sits right with me.

I guess from AUs I'd take the care/dedication of the aesthetics and put them into Undertale. I don't think UT is a very pretty game and the environments are pretty fucking boring apart from some exceptions, but I wouldn't insert any specific aesthetic into it. Maybe the idea of having it so more time was spent into the world, making it more fantastical or cramped or just building up ANY sort of overall atmosphere - half the time I'd forget that the monsters were trapped in a tiny, enclosed Underground space.

Cheating, but the moral ambiguity from OFFtale too (although it does it poorly). I feel like the game rail roads you too hard onto the "correct" path, True Pacifist, and you're treated like a monster for doing accidental or justifiable killing. Characters being all inherently good and dindu nuffins is such a cheap way to make you do TP. I think the Undertale cast is for the majority, quite shallow without much depth. Easy to love, easy to care for and protect but I don't feel moved by them much at all. Honestly, they remind me of pets. Weak creatures that need your help unconditionally. To sum it up, I suppose I want there to be more "grey areas", and not a strong right/wrong way of playing.

I'm pretty tired, so I dunno how much sense this post makes.

Right now the only AU I'm remotely following is Storyshift, because the author actually updates it. It's pretty decent.

As far as integrating AU stuff with the canon Undertale, I think the idea is stupid. I already have a pretty low view of AUs since it just turns Undertale itself into a template for people with no creativity and people who draw smut (not that there's anything wrong with that in and of itself).

As far as written AU stuff goes, FINAGLC, One By One, and AYEM are spectacular, and I don't hate those because they stick pretty close to the canon of Undertale and either tack some stuff on at the end or explain some holes in the story.

Genocide makes me too depressed when I think about how everyone suffered so much only for everything to end in death. I know TP is cheesy and too feel good but honestly if I wanted a super realistic downer ending I wouldn't be playing a video game about the power of friendship. Sometimes it's nice for everything to work out and for everyone to get a chance at being happy.
