Really makes you think...

Out here, in the ass end of literally nowhere, is the last place you expected to be. You were given these coordinates by a shady guy in an even shadier place. As you slowly approach, skimming the top of the asteroid field, you finally see it. A few lights here, a shimmer there. Once in range, the abnormal object comes into view. What looks to be 3 Caterpillars all docked together, with a dozen or more ships floating casually next to it.

It's the most illicit club this side of the 'verse, with a patron set that ranges from young kids looking to dance all the way to hardened smugglers waiting for a job. The UEE doesn't patrol this far out, and the Vanduul have all but ignored it. It's lawless, but as you don your EVA suit to head to the airlock, you note that it's not without order. Patrols of hired thugs sit silently in the dark, and you're sure there are more bouncers inside.

Why did you come all the way out here? You don't remember. It's probably not a good idea, yet here you are. The airlock loudly thumps, hisses, and then coughs. There is pressure again, and you remove your helmet. The inner airlock door opens, and a wave of... excitement... hits you. You enter the dimly lit station.

What songs and music do you expect to be hearing?

Yes. They showed in the whitebox video and talked about how there will be a docking module for the Cat, do you could in theory have multiple of them (one in the front of the stack, one in the back) and basically put another cat up against it with a similar setup. In essence daisy chaining Cats together

What's there to be excited about? It's not-Mako and I've yet too see any practical usability aside from "you can drive it and shoot... something".

>>153857872
Given CIG's way of releasing shit, it's not even "I won't be surprised if it's late, but..." it's "Ok they said X date. add on a month or 2, and we'll start from there."

Not that I'd want them to rush it, but them reaching the deadline would be a miracle. The same thing happened with every other major content release, and most of the minor releases.

I hope they add some sort of anti-air cannons on the ground...

Otherwise ground vehicles are basically useless. Why would I not just fly in on top of something, land and shit out all my little men? With my shields up, the infantry weapons aren't going to hurt me.

I imagine almost every "Attack this pirate base" mission will end up with people just hovering in the air blasting them with CF-117s or similar
>>

The same would be for the Ursa, except it can't fight back as well with a shit turret, has to deal with land, and can't escape at hundreds of m/s.

Even as a cargo platform... like.. what for?

Just fly your freelancer over to the base itself and push the cargo out the back? Why would I ever need to take a tiny box out of my ship, put it into the rover, drive it over somewhere basically unprotected and slow.

I get it from a lore/immersion standpoint, but I don't see ground vehicles fitting into this gameplay wise

Not anon but:

>Transporting cargo to and from isloted ground bases to your ship

>Raiding grounded ships with your friends

>A vehicle for exploration and sample collecting

And seriously, its comfy as fuck.
>>
>>153863252

Every element of science fiction has them land the ships far away so they have to have drama on the rover ride to the destination.

In the real world, given ships like we have in star citizen that can literally fly/land anywhere and hover in mid-air, you would just land right next to the place.

It would be one thing if we HAD to land at designated landing areas, or we HAD to have good huge open fields, but the fact is we can land fucking anywhere and just set it down.
>>
>>153863021
Only reason I can see for using an Ursa is if fuel is expensive enough to want to not waste the stuff
>>
>>153863021
I can think of a bunch. There will likely be plenty of places a ship can't reach, caves, gulleys, fortified bunkers built into cliffsides, etc, and if there's loot down in them it'd be more effective to go in with the Ursa, load everything up on it, and return to ship than making multiple trips in a dragonfly or worse, on foot.
>>
>>153863481
How are you going to fly a ship into a cavern, anon? How are you going to fly one underground into a cave? How will you fly one into the confinds of a large base? How will you fly one past AA emplacements?

It's great if you have lots of cargo space.
Otherwise Robigo is the place you're looking for.
>>
>>153863678

How often do you expect cave bases to be a thing? Probably not as common as you are thinking. If even 10% of all bases were cave bases it would look fucking rediculous and be unrealistic, so you won't see it that often. And even still, how often are you expecting those said cave bases to be large enough to drive a rover around in?

> confines of a large base

Uh, over top of it? And then down? Easy. Worst case scenario I land outside the wall/gate or nearest building. No real need for a rover there. Maybe a hand cart to move some boxes but that's it.

We have seen no indication of AA emplacements, but even still, I'll just fly high into the air and shoot them

>>153863252
>highly maneuverable vehicle across the fucking planet surface

A Freelancer Max (I think it'll be large enough) or a Constellation can fly over the bumpy terrain and won't be slowed down by it, and can also fly off if need be, has better turrets, and much better main weaponry + the additional hull armor, massive shields, and can carry plenty more cargo.

>>153863341
>1
Land next to the base - grav pallets exist for this vary reason. Also, the Ursa would basically fill the entire cargo hold, so you're shooting yourself in the foot.

>2
That would be cool for pure RP reasons, but gameplay wise it's not needed when you can land next to it.

>3
Ships fly. The Dragonfly can also be used in space and is relatively compact

>4
RP?

>5
First viable use. But if that's really all it can do, it's really a hindrance since it takes up a large space in the Carrack or constellation you carry it in.

The only use I can even consider a ground-based vehicle for would be some kind of stealth operation.

Maybe there is a trading outpost on the ground that tends to have a lot of shitters around (see: GrimHex), so you fly a few miles away out of sight, find a nice rock or valley to tuck your ship away, hop out, lock it, and drive your rover there.

Worst case scenario you lose the rover

The only fuel in SC is Quantum and Jump fuel. They never run out of main thruster or maneuvering thruster fuel. They're fusion reactors or some shit.

>>153863541
Caves, yes I see it being needed for that but I doubt they're going to be common enough to require you bring an Ursa wherever. Gullies can be flown into, or they'd have to specifically make them so that only an Ursa can fit in, which is doubtable given what we've seen of their planet tech so far. And once again, if you're trying to get a load of cargo from some place, how in the hell are you going to bring it into the connie or freelancer when the Ursa takes up almost all of the space?

>>153864384
>stealth operation
now THAT sounds like a good use for it, albeit won't be very common (Just how many stealth missions do they want lol) but that's a viable use. It still doesn't seem like the Ursa is useful to me though. Almost everything it can do can be done by a ship better, faster, and with less worry about some other ships spotting you and one-shotting.

>>153864552
Probably sample collection.

only application i can see (and every small cargo ship will do this better) is moving large amounts of cargo to your ship. cool concept but it'll be alot less cool when you just get raped by any ship with a gun or a pack of dragonflies (assuming theyre not adding some form of armor mechanic and a dragonfly can kill it)

all the pirate armors are really the highest class of edginess. they're all far more interesting and potentially iconic looking than anything from the marine or law abiding citizen sets we've seen so far.

the heavy suit is probably my fave for aesthetics; it's literally chunks of ship's hull plate welded together to make a personal armor.

You don't keep a gun under your seat for the safe places you're traveling, and space is a lot more dangerous than stopping at a shady gas station in a run-down part of the city. Humans are a paranoid lot, and I'd rather have a ship with at least some ability to defend itself than a floating loot box just waiting for a single pirate in an m50 to come along and tip over so he can steal my jewelry box from my dresser.

What's happening with the HUD?

Since I can now enjoy Arena Commander, I've noticed the colour scheme sucks. The blips on the 3D map aren't dark enough, and it's common sense to have red for enemies, not light orange. Blue for friendlies / green for team mates, etc. That elaborate lock-on animation was much better than what we have now, it was darker too.

Are they still working on it or is it pretty much nailed down?

And I still can't understand why my wing guns on my Hornet fire backwards and outwards, I thought they fixed these things regularly over a year ago.

Apart from that, Arena Commander is shaping up to be quite solid. I'm still too bad to play against other players, until these bugs are fixed and I can practice with better performance. I don't seem to be able to earn REC in Vanduul swarm, though.
>>
>>153870043
>your character is still mainly your ship in Star Citizen
But you can walk around your ship, right?
That, to me, makes it feel WAY more like you're a person flying a ship and not just a ship.
>>
>>153870512
>What's happening with the HUD?

It is being developed. This is but one of many variations they'll go through until release.
>>
>>153870171
Yeah, but even the "safest" areas in Star Citizen aren't perfect. Some protection is necessary from the more lawless elements, Vanduul raiders, or even from human separatists. I wouldn't feel safe without at least a pilot slaved turret, even if I can't really use it effectively, but with turrets in certain locations along the hull, it's enough to make you feel almost not naked.

>>153870197
You don't lose armor or bought weapons when you die in Crusader. Strangely, when I bought the light Marine armor, I ended up with a ballistic rifle to go along with it. I'm not sure if I already had it and didn't realize or what, but I got to keep that rifle, too.

>>153870512
They're still working on it, your feedback's pretty good, you should probably submit the bugs you're facing officially. I actually really like the HUDs of the Vanguard and Sabre, and I figured out the freelook controls for the HUD recently, so now I can take a quick look at even the stupid crotch-level readouts. It's not bad.

>>153870651
Yeah, you can walk around your ship. It really goes a long way to making things feel more like your own, and get you down and immersed in what you're doing.
>>

Rather safe than sorry. Have guns, don't use them, no harm done. Need guns, don't have them? You're fucked.

Mind you, the turrets in SC aren't that good, but without them you can basically have an Aurora sit in front of you and constantly shoot into your cockpit with no deterrent. Everyone in the universe is already armed, so there's no point in gimping a population that can very well encounter them but have no way of fighting for themselves. There's also the vanduul.

Depends on how you want to play it, me and my brother have mainly been piloting our ships, my best friend however has mainly been manning the turret and being a marine.
>>
We will be given the ability to transfer any of our ships to our current dock in 2.2 - there will be no delay in this transfer as the Developers have done some testing and any delay at all was considered to be too much of an impediment to gameplay.

In the recent Gamescom streams a recurring theme was that of "lowering the barriers to gameplay".

It would appear that travelling back to the location of a stored ship to fetch it back to one's location takes too much time and is therefore a barrier to gameplay that is unacceptable in the eyes of the Developers (and a large number of players, of course).

In a game where we have been given, to the best of the abilities of the Developers, a 1:1 interpretation of the our galaxy - with hundreds of billions of stars it seems that the size of the galaxy itself would now appear to be a problem to solve in the eyes of the Developers.

It will be interesting to see what further concessions to convenience we are given in future releases that will facilitate the multi-player aspect of the game.

I didn't check the like bar, I just saw like 20 seconds of explosions and sliding on knees killing enemies in 1 second, dual-wielding machine guns, etc. It looked terrible, so I closed it and lost my interest in buying it. I only want to play the campaign anyway.

>Dual wielding machine guns

The funniest thing about this situation is that this game is fully pandering to them, the 360 No scope Akimbo 420 1337xXx crowd. Maybe they hate it because it's a reflection of what they are.

I mean, I'm watching a dude run around with an assault rifle that transforms into akimbo guns with laser sight on them. That's the type of shit that MW2 children would normally cream over.
>>
>>153873640
Kind of. SC will have organizations, crew positions for either NPCs or players, and those organizations will limited abilities to fight over shit. To what extent? We don't know exactly. We do know that in UEE systems, they can barely do shit, but in pirate systems they can fight and war peacfully. Beyond that we aren't sure, but they will exist and will have their uses.

I'm personally waiting for org warfare te be ache
>>
>>153873640
More indepth, since you're playing your character and running through burning ships putting out fires or jumping into escape pods and hoping a stray round in the battle doesn't take out your pod.

Or be a man and go board a enemy capship, get a new ship.

Yep. What's worse is if you buy the premium version of CoD: IW (which is £80 for me) you get a copy of CoD 4 and 10 multiplayer maps.

It's not worth the money, and I played tonnes of CoD 4 years ago anyway so it doesn't interest me.

>I'm watching a dude run around with an assault rifle that transforms into akimbo guns with laser sight on them
I saw some guy pull out a gadget that looked like a crossbow, and he aimed it at 3 people and it sprayed out dozens of bullets and killed them. I think when we finally get SQ42 it will satisfy our need for comfy space campaigns.

It's almost a certainty you'll be able to pick up surplus military gear in-game, they just haven't split it apart into different components yet. Currently we have five slots on the player model:
1. Hat
2. Jacket
3. T-shirt
4. Pants
5. Shoes
Then we have a full space suit to wear in place of those slots. So if they wanted to get Squadron 42 NPC clothing to us they'd have to split it all into those components, then try to see how it works together with the other options we currently have. It'd be a fucking mess. Once we get implementation of all the customization options we're supposed to have, we'll see a lot more clothing popping in.

>>

>>
>>153875693

>>
So, we know basically how cargo unit capacity works right? But what about loose items?

For example, say you can fit 10,000 units in your ship, they are all neatly stored in your cargo bay. But what about what we saw in the demo where the guy picked up a box of loot and carried it to his ship? Can he take that and dump it on his passenger seat and carry 10,001 units? Can I fill the corridors of my retaliator with hundreds of boxes of random crap?
>>
>>153875693

in my not-so-humble-or-relevant opinion, I think they can create the greatest Roleplaying available, but for general usage as an actual asset, I think the current understanding of their role is too narrow to be viable for carrying around. This was all explained in the debate above, so I don't feel like explaining it all again, but all it would really have left is either: being able to take ground samples for "science" in SC, and do the same on planets with dangerous smog, or caves.

The guy in the Gamestar video says 'CR mentioned at Gamescom that they'll maybe get it out next year', while the article they (Gamestar) put out directly after Gamescom said 'CR mentioned he's hopeful they can get it out by the end of 2016'. And in the comment section of something, also on the Gamestar site, the guy who made the video wrote something along the lines of 'CR said all of the art and missions will be done by the end of this year and they're just waiting for AI and stuff like cover mechanics for stealth missions'.

In ED you can blow out the thrusters or power plant to stop someone. Sniping the reactor isn't usually an instant kill, but it's risky. There's a small chance of catastrophic failure and any additional hits to the reactor can trigger it.

The victim isn't completely without options, either. A power plant at 0% integrity still produces a bit of energy, so if they thought ahead and managed their power setup with this possibility in mind they may still have enough power to maneuver.

As for the engines you'd need to be quick because all ships have emergency self-repair systems that can attempt to bring the engines back online. It doesn't always work though.

No idea, I mean what could they do that we can't? We can already fly the ship on our own.

Any straight buffs will essentially be buffs for large ships. Crew requirement without buffs will just be a tax for flying large ships thanks to crew wages.

The only thing I can think of is auxiliary vehicle crew. Like the fighters coming out soon. Hopefully they can expand it to include SRVs. If I could deploy a squadron of SRVs using NPC crew that would be cool. Command them to go scan and destroy shit while I support them from the air in a Federal Funship.

i cum so hard while hurtling through space toward a decommissioned space station. slowly, i pull my knees to my chest and close my eyes as my bowels begin to expel hundreds upon hundreds of beautiful, symmetrical turds, brown as the day is long. i laugh like a young girl as my turds drift aimlessly behind me; they are as butterflies to a child frolicking in the fields of elysium.

i approach the station’s docking port, flaccid cock in hand, and prepare to float gently into its inviting confines. i extend my cockless arm jubilantly, as to celebrate the majesty and depth of space, and thank jesus christ for this ultimate gift and blessing. but suddenly, my outstretched arm collides with the outer rim of the docking port, and the trajectory of my quaggy body is violently halted.

the fates afford me barely enough time to turn my head before the turds arrive. one thousand turds, each one seemingly larger than the last. i try in vain to cleanse my eyes of the shitsting, but succeed only in smearing my own fecal matter into a fine asspaste, which slowly seeps into my eyes and nasal cavity. i inhale three hundred and twenty four Space Turds; my lungs are permeated completely with my own shit. i hang lax, spirit broken, defeated by poop.

>>
>>153892734
Because
A) You're going to get a replacement in equal state of repair as when you last docked, so unless you're doing it every time you take it out, it won't help you Which is further compounded by
B) Replacement times become exponential if you start fucking around like that.
>>
>>153892975
>Other than engineer, the rest seem unnecessary for what we can do now by ourselves.
So the problem is that they didn't have multi-crew from the start, so you're used to flying ships solo and dislike the change?

I'm not a fan of SC's large ship crew requirements, but I'm fine with the idea of the "tax".
>>
>>153893218
>Dislike the change

Nowhere did I say I like or dislike it. I said it sounds like a useless gimmick. Especially if they introduce arbitrary wing limits. A cutter with four people manning it will be severely worse than a wing of four cutters. So my question is, how do they make it viable without outright give p2w buffs to multicrew?

Oh no, we're talking about NPC crews.

SC requires crews to operate large ships, player can get NPCs to do these tasks. This is apparently ok.

ED, up until now, did not require crews to operate large ships, players can get NPCs to do these tasks. This is apparently bad.

You objected to the change of "what we can do now by ourselves", do you think NPC crews in of themselves are bad or is it that they changed it so ships will require crews? Would it be acceptable if SC ships suddenly got "robot ai gimbal comptuers" which meant 1 player could fly a Reclaimer by themselves?

I've played a shitton of the X series and I liked it and still think it's shit. It's barely even a space game - all the ships have WW2 fighter speeds and the largest single distance you'll ever come across is 150km tops. Actual travel is being done by literally speeding up the game x10 (SETA). The "space" part is pretty much just there for looks.

Also the progress is really flawed. With trading you'll never get anywhere. Piracy literally doesn't work because shooting 1 ship of (race) will immediately kill your reputation with that race. Meanwhile missions scale with your combat rank and you might come across a "bring me to that station over there" mission for the price of half a carrier.

Also the entire X series before rebirth is pretty much just the same game (Xbtf) patched and overhauled a million times.
>>
>>153911327
>Also the entire X series before rebirth is pretty much just the same game (Xbtf) patched and overhauled a million times.
Oh yeah forgot to mention that half of these patches/overhauls are just officialized mods. Honestly they're even the best parts. The devs themselves are fucking retarded. No wonder X Rebirth failed so hard, they didn't have any modders to rely on.

It's not in either, though. It's clearly in production and pace is moving faster than it was a year ago.

Think about it like this, with most other games, the studios are established, the people already know what they're doing pipelines and other infrastructure has been set for a long time. All they do is focus on the game.

CIG, on the other hand, started with nothing but a plan for a small scale game and a funding goal of a few million. Now they've built up four locations with $122mil+ and the game Roberts always dreamed of making. We've only just recently seen CIG reach their stride, and since then we've seen massive improvements in very short periods of time.

The game isn't in development hell though.

It has a clear development pace now. The reason they don't give estimates is because they did back in the day when none of the pipelines were set up and regularly couldn't meet the deadlines.

Currently, CIG are developing at the fastest and smoothest rate since the project began.

I facetanked an Elite one in a Cobra a few days ago. It had large plas and med rails equipped. All I did was come to a complete stop, flip sideways and shoot it in the face. It just sat there at around 1KM and missed every single shot.

It only fired the plasma, though. I'm guessing the AI always cancels the railgun charge at the last nanosecond if it's not going to hit.

So Elite Dangerous is looking at me in a seductive way. Help me decide pls.
Anyone played Evochron? I really loved the flying around with the jumprdrive and the scale of the universe, but I hated the way trade was a literal cynical grind of pushing a button to gather and then dump it off at a station to increase a number.
Ironically, I always loved the X series for the trading, comfy space trucking, and open world stuff, even though the flight physics were lacking.

So how does E:D compare to any of this?

I haven't followed SC development that closely. What year were the studios considered established?
>>
>>153918615
no real story as far as I can gauge from what I played.
It's basically a completely empty universe with the same space station placed in different systems "officially" belonging to different factions or something, and they all have the same 3 randomly generated missions and a certain price fluctuation that doesn't seem to relate to anything.
I just love the newtonian physics coupled with the persistent and huge universe that give you such a freedom of movement without loading times, but at the same time earning money just feels like literally pushing a button to get a tiny amount of cash over and over again in the most cynically grindy way possible.
I don't even know what it is exactly. I loved the X series and even played X:Rebirth a few years after release, once it was fixed and actually enjoyable, and it never felt THIS cynical as in Evochron.

I'm annoyed that ED's rolling out fighter bays next month and they haven't considered Utility ships. As in ships that aren't light fighters. Like repair ship, refueling, mining, or even a utility cargo ship like SC's Argo that's just a small ship carrying a cargo container. Or how about using the fighter bay for a large skimmer/hovertank, 50 ton main battletank the size of a sidewinder.

There's so much they could have done with the concept.

Salvager ship; if the enemy ship's powerplant and engines are both destroyed or if the crew is dead the ship doesn't explode and is now able to be targettted by salvage mini-ships.

Scout shuttle; small shuttle that can do low wake fsd, will scout out all unexplored planets/stars in the system then return to your ship. Multiple scout shuttles will work together to scan a system quickly.

Surveyor; will scout out an asteroid field looking for asteroids with the metals/minerals you added to it's filter.

there are new cockpits to make it feel less cramped, but you can't fly other ships, no.

It's based on component damage, all ships will have functioning components in specific places that can be damaged and repaired.

So for example if you manage to destroy an energy regulator or something it could cause a chain reaction destroying nearby components, and if enough of them get disabled it could make the entire ship explode.

Unlike most games that involve vehicle combat, shooting a ship won't always cause it to explode because they don't use a simple health bar. Sometimes you may end up disabling it's thrusters so it can't move, sometimes you could kill the pilot while leaving the ship mostly intact, sometimes you damage the power plant rendering the ship completely defenseless BUT not destroyed, so you could then board it and take it's cargo (or even the entire ship if you manage to repair/replace the power plant)

I do agree with the sentiment that the jumping from star to star part of journeys is too hands off and the maploading takes too long. If they had it more seamless where it was more like supercruise between stars and the player was simply slowed down while near stars, it'd be more fun. Right now it's lock star, wait 30 seconds, point to next star, repeat.

I remember seeing this video from Isinona about FAOff supercruise.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj2MXw8t_40

They really need to add depth to the system. In-system microjumps from star to star would help fix binary and multiple star systems. Maybe in place of a FAOff they could add a Flight Safeties Off mode which lets the FSD go faster in gravity wells in exchange for inflicting damage.

jumping multiple systems wasn't a big deal in the older games because the map loaded instantly and travelling only took the few seconds for the animation to play

FSD cooldown, loading etc all taken into account it probably takes 30+ seconds per jump not counting the several minutes of fucking with the map and getting away from masslocks at the start of the journey

you probably can't improve the loading time, so my solution would be to simply uncap the amount of fuel you can use per jump, and balance better FSD's purely by fuel effieciency

that way you can go as far as you can, and then engage in refueling gameplay, so you aren't just staring at a fancy loading screen for ten minutes of "travel"

or maybe let you swing by multiple stars in one "jump", to preserve the fact that less fuel per jump limits the routes you can take in areas with fewer stars, maybe even a fancy stargate-ish animation for it, but still only load the final destination system

Most of the ships (if not all of them) already have Interiors, we just can't explore them yet.

With multi-crew comes the character creator, which im sure will be used for making NPC's as well

i don't know, i'm probably being hopeful, but too me it seems like both 2.2 and 2.3 are building toward something.

I swear to god 3.0 is going into too-good-to-be-true territory.

>Netcode refactor to have stable and high FPS, probably also leading to a higher playcount
>the fabled Itemport 2.0 shit that seems like it can do literally anything and everything, also now apparently relates to the advanced damage states
>true components for ships
>Procedural planets, probably with a few small bases to do missions for
>a few more landing zones (I.e, the rest of Stanton)
>most likely the Caterpillar, an even larger ship than the Starfarer
>on top of the supposed major FPS update in 2.6

Am I missing anything? This is a stupendous amount of shit.

Also, quick question, since the Caterpillar has 5 body modules and 1 front module, would it be possible to remove 4 or 5 body modules and effectively have a blockade runner?

not so fast. this will not be fixed so fast I think
>>
>>153945285
it will never be fixed, they need to design it from the ground up, you can't patch in good netcode

They've been talking about this shit for a few months now, and we have about 5 or 6 months until 3.0 comes around. Do you think it's not possible to replace the entirety of the netcode when they have hired a lot of the people who made CryEngine itself?

>>153945026
It's not a game, it's pure SEX and JUSTICE in a package.

Yes you can. See: Path of Exile.

It probably sounds too good to be true because they basically just entered a phase of development where shit is really kicking off.

Once things are functional in the Stanton system, future updates will probably just include ships and additional star systems until full release, and expect them to come even faster once work switches over from Squadron 42.

The net code will probably be the last thing they get fully stable though, don't get your hopes up over any major improvements in 3.0

Anaconda and Corvette have those two big fighter hangars in the bottom sides, could fit a pretty big vehicle in those if Fdev was willing to think outside of the box.
