Right, I figured the items had stats, but not too many games ALSO visually display the items.

The gameplay doesn't look boring to me, but the combat does look somewhat unsatisfying. Swinging the sword especially just doesn't feel like it has any weight. If the combat were juicier I think it would make your game more enjoyable.

> You’re about halfway done with Punch Guy 2: Punch Harder when one of the gameplay coders shows you something he’s stumbled on. It’s an emergent behavior we hadn’t planned on during the design phase. Our new “destructible environments” feature combined with our “punch guys over railings” feature, and created this situation where you could punch someone through a window. Once people found out about this, they formed a little group around one of the testing computers. All afternoon there’s been a rotating group of five or six people passing the controller around, blasting dudes through windows with uppercuts and cheering. It’s the most enthusiasm the team has shown in weeks.

> Everyone who tries it says, “We should add this to the game.” Moments like this are why you went into making games in the first place. It’s an obviously fun feature, its something your rivals making Fist Man don’t have, and as a bonus it will look great in trailers. Obviously you’re a fool if you don’t put this in. And the feature is basically done, right? So this accidental thing is given the blessing to become a real feature. You don’t need to put it on anyone’s to-do list, since people were basically already working on it in their “spare time”.

>>
>>153858460

> But as time goes on, it becomes clear that the feature is not actually as close to done as it seemed. Over the following weeks, a gradual trickle of new issues get added to the global to-do list:

> 1) There are only a couple of windows in the game where this feature can be used. We should have the level designers go in and add a few more, where possible.

> 2) Windows were originally supposed to be un-breakable, so right now there’s nothing but a black void outside. Level designers will need to go back to completed levels and add some sort of facade for the world outside the window. (Which artists will need to design.)

> 3) The AI doesn’t recognize it’s been punched out of a window, which means the victim just stands outside of the level, shouting combat taunts. This might lead to players getting stuck in areas where their goal is to defeat everyone.
>>
>>153858482
And what is the worm? It's clearly not just about making a new thread it's about the desperate need for your meme pictures to be seen. Think for a second about how pathetic this is and how the rest of us see it. It's rotate tier pathetic.

> 4) The lead artist is driven crazy by the fact that you shatter these dirty external windows and the lighting doesn’t change in the room, even though it should let more sunlight in. She insists that we add some dynamic lights to deal with this. In the end, she’s right. It really does give the window-breaking an extra visceral kick, because it gives the player an additional way to change the environment. But it also means a little more fussing around and generally adds a bit more overhead to building levels.

> 5) There are a bunch of strange edge-cases where you can punch a guy out of a window, but other dudes are between the victim and the window. The victim sort of floats through them, which looks horrible. We need changes to the AI or fight logic to handle this.
>>
Spent the last week or so making 3 new editor windows. The first two lets you design character base stats (Class) and swappable auxiliary stat modifiers and skill sets (Subclass) extremely quickly, and the Progressions List editor lets you see and edit what skills the Class or Subclass will get and when.
>>
>>153858750

> 6) A tester punched the final boss out of a window and ended the fight in 5 seconds. Remember that being punched out of a window is actually just being punched over a railing, which was supposed to be an insta-kill as far as the game is concerned. But we don’t want players to be able to insta-kill the final boss.

> We originally dealt with this by not having any railings in the final room. But we can’t remove the windows from the final room. The cutscene animator is adamant that this window is integral to the pre-fight cutscene. It’s major component of the lighting in the room, and one of the characters even looks out of the window and comments on something outside. Removing this window would mean re-writing this scene, re-scripting the action, re-recording the dialog, and re-designing the room layout. The artists say you should make the window unbreakable, which the gameplay designer hates because it goes against the established rules for no good reason. He thinks the window should be removed, which the art team hates because they don’t want to throw away all this work and make the scene less visually interesting just to solve an “exploit”.

> This debate goes in circles for weeks. Eventually some bright young kid comes up with the idea of making the window “strong”. It cracks every time you slam someone into it, and on the third impact it shatters. Maneuvering the final boss to be thrown into the window three times is actually more difficult than just doing the fight normally, although it is faster. This seems like a good compromise, and even a nice side-goal for skilled players.

> This solves the problem, but requires even more work from everyone.
>>

> 7) The art team thinks the glass particles need to be re-worked. They were fine if this was just a random bit of scenery shattering, but now that this is a major feature and it’s going to be in cutscenes and trailers, we really need the bits of glass to glitter in the sunlight. There should be dust. And there’s a three-day debate in email where the team argues if it makes sense for there to be flying blood particles or if lacerations from flying glass wouldn’t start visibly bleeding until after the body hit the ground. Suddenly everyone is citing Wikpedia, or Myth Busters, or their cousin who’s an EMT, all trying to give a definitive answer to justify their vision.

> 8) The really big foes – “bruisers” to the dev team – don’t look right when going through a window. They’re so tall that their head passes through the frame at the top and their arms often clip through on either side. We need to either make them immune to throws in front of a window (the gameplay guy throws a fit at this suggestion) or we need to record a couple of new animations where they… I dunno… maybe tuck in their arms and head so they fit through the window? Can the animators make that look good? (The lead animator looks like she’s going going to bite someone when you mention this to her.)

> 9) The flying glass particles we added? Now the sound designer says his effects no longer match. His sound was originally sort of a generic “something broke” sound, but it’s totally inappropriate for this cloud of flying glass shards we have now. He wants to add a few new sounds for this, and he needs the scripts for the windows to be changed to use these new sounds.

> 10) In the warehouse level, guys are scripted to jump IN through the windows for the set-piece brawl. This is confusing as hell for playtesters, who all wanted to stand in front of the window and punch guys back out the moment they jumped in. This doesn’t work the way they expect, and it would be lame if it did. We need to change something so that players no longer want to do this.

> Eventually – after weeks of back-and-forth – we have the guys enter through some sort of chute.

> Suddenly this “tiny” feature has gobbled up a couple of weeks worth of development time. It’s not management’s fault. Nobody here is a bad guy. Nobody is incompetent. The only way to avoid stuff like this it is make a firm rule of NEVER EXPLORE AWESOME FEATURES THAT AREN’T IN THE SPEC.

The thing about these forced circlejerk memes in agdg is they give the subject undue validity. Gogem really is a tool who makes bad games and namefags despite never posting progress and everyone thinking he's a joke. Making playful meme images about him is just homosexual buddy buddy elbow nudging which the fags who make them do because they want everyone here to be their friend and they want to be in on some kind of inside joke.

If you make meme images about someone like rotate he will only further believe he is a celebrity here and considers the person who made the image to be his friend. This makes him and the person making the image homosexual circlejerk buddies.

First of all, this is /agdg/. Second is posting an OP 30-20 posts early really hurting anyone?
Third, if you want /agdg/ to improve its behavior to "more mature" you guys should really be taking all your posts more seriously. Engine devs fighting over languages, code,art,idea,music,1MA all fighting over who's more valuable to their team. Source posters, "Where is your game?" morons fighting in an ever lasting loop. Not to mention people who are so bitter that go out and attack "lessor" games over the way they draw or how messy they code. Don't even get me started on "Who devs"

All that being said, how is me googum posting so destructive to this general? We have plenty other problems to worry about.

You could be making a game instead of making meme pictures about namefags in some obscure /vg/ thread for self-validation. Do you really need your circlejerk meme pics to be seen so badly that you will break the rules to make early threads and put them in the OP? Apparently you do.

Don't fall into the trap of taking inbred memes from a tiny thread with ~100 posters more seriously than your gamedev or before you know it you'll be tripfagging and taking HRT.

Nice pasta, but there are several places where you just need to shut the fuck up.

1 and 2 who cares, constant revisions should be done to make sure the product is polished.
3 is valid, but should be resolved by having the enemy auto faint. 4 you can ignore. 5 is bullshit, there should be collision logic since this is a game where you punch dudes.
6 has several points where complexity is being added for no reason. In the final room for the final boss, don't have the boss die instantly like normal enemies and have him re-enter. Or animate him grabbing the rail and pulling himself back up because he's the boss. Tell the cutscene animator to shut the fuck up, because this is a game not a movie. More bullshit because the simple solution is ignored

Following is just argument for argument's sake. Oh no the artist has to fix something? Oh no the Animator has to fix something? Oh no the sound guy has to fix something?

Polish takes time. But what you have are an entire team of idiots who don't seem to understand that this will take time and effort to do, like every other aspect of the game. Because as it was said, this is a feature that Fist Man didn't have. Do you want to spend a little more time making the game GOOD?

The reality is that this WAS management's fault. Management should have said, since we all have experience implementing features, and since we obviously have set regular milestones so we have an idea of how much work we have to still do, can we feasibly work on this?

You can't

The platforms are dogshit for creating decent gameplay and users don't want to pay for anything unless you use scummy skinnerbox techniques that ruin the game for both paying and non-paying players. Also, you need about 20 million dollars in advertising and a botnet to scam the store popularity algorithm if you want people to even know about your game, let alone play it.

At this point all you can do is watch the cashed up corporations milk the normies dry with their non-games.

Where do I begin with this?

>You could be making a game instead of making meme pictures about namefags in some obscure /vg/ thread for self-validation.
Okay, this image took me about 5 minutes to whip together, Do you honestly think I have a fetish for painting googum not once but twice? It's just an AGDG logo edit with those googumgirls pasted side by side. Literally 5 minutes in Photoshop. PS: I've put far more work into my games.
>Do you really need your circlejerk meme pics to be seen so badly that you will break the rules to make early threads and put them in the OP? Apparently you do.
Well you first assume I know there is a golden rule of 750 posts. Not to mention by making this early I avoided 3 threads popping up with different OPs, Are or you just jealous you didn't get to make one or something?

Also if we are anti-memes than why the fuck is there one every second thread? What about that pixel girl a guy made and everyone shit on him and made her into literally "meme girl"
Or what about the infamous AggerDagger???

Is it only funny when we're pretending to be better than others? oh wait, come to think about it that makes plenty of sense.

>Don't fall into the trap of taking inbred memes from a tiny thread with ~100 posters more seriously than your gamedev or before you know it you'll be tripfagging and taking HRT.

Now we're hating on trans people. Sure is /pol/ in here.

You guys don't make any since, now you are discussing Rotate, Mothdan, and bringing up Tranny this and that.

As soon as I make it I'm leaving this shithole and never coming back. You can be glad on that.

Last post to this argument knowing this will go on forever, you could win if you want, I really don't care.

Have fun in a constantly deteriorating general

Found the article
>http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=31667
I think there is something to be learned inside of the article, but its really about extremely poor planning encounters RL.
There is a legitimate danger that the writers believes in their article too, or the attitude presented in the article is common.

You also got gigantic red warning signs like
>>Games are Never Finished, Only Abandoned

>And just to play devil’s advocate: Imagine you’re a corporate manager. You allocated $X million to Punch Guy for a Christmas release.
>And now the project lead comes to you in late summer and says he needs more time (money) to finish the game

>>but voluntary crunch by people who are trying to push the medium is a good thing.

This isn't about Crunch, its about extremely poor planning and communication. Where most people have no idea on how to do anything.
I get that this is common, but its usually a danger sign.
If the spec is invalid, then halt the project before thats a issue. If purchaser can't figure out what they want, force them to sign away their rights.
If a new feature spec comes in, don't let it, your goal is to reject it during the original contract phase.

7 man team.
Biggest problem was a lack of a clear & effective plan.

What the article wants to sell, is that emergent gameplay happens during playtesting, and time is needed to allow it to be expanded to improve the game.

What the article accidentally sells, is that playtesting happens very late in the games development cycle.
And whoever did negotiations for the hypothetical team(project leader, markeding, etc), failed to negotiate a set contract without external loopholes.

so how does one go about making this type of terrian? I plan on using Unity. But I can't find any tutorials that come close to this. I know animal crossing does it, and as I was writing i realized that WC3 did and probably some more other games, but my main problem is finding the right key words to search for.

I've tried searching: unity 3d terrain tiles or 3d grid terrain

I can't seem to refine my search well enough to get what i'm looking for.

I want the terrain, to random gen it, and place buildings/objects in a grid fashion.

What do I search for the terrain? Help me /AGDG/, you're my only hope.

So something that I think games do not take advantage of enough is impossible space and impossible changes based on field of vision. As an example you look at a hallway with a dead end, look away and when you look back there is door. Or another example is rooms bigger on the inside. Or multiple doors that lead into the same entrance. These sorts of twists and turns are only really utilized in some horror games, but I think it would work well in certain thrillers or puzzle games.

> 7 man team

What, were you sub-contracted for a mobile app?

Anyway, you're making the presumption that the feature was discovered during playtesting and that it wasn't the result of testing out engine tools that the management gave to them. You might be one of those grognard purists, but the majority of real world software development, especially in games, relies on tools and engines that have been pre-made and doled out by corporate (for better and for worse).

I kind of question your level of experience when you made the completely wrong assumption. This isn't even about the article at this point. It just shows either your narrow-mindedness or lack of industry experience.

7 people isn't that much, by the way. Then again, I operated in New York City.

I agree with this, but its not optimal.

If the Content Creation tools IS the bottleneck, you might want to literally invest into R&D to solve this.
Or figure out a better way to do this.
If the core problem is poor client spec, it needs to be solved before anybody runs into a contract deadline.

Have you ever had something you really wanted to make which would simply work better and be more suited to mobile?

In a bit of a dilemma at the mo.
Starting work on something intended to be a super comfy, chilled, pick up and play game / 'game'.

(Think tone similar to flow/flower, cyberpunk bartender. Gameplay would be in a place between mellow animal crossing, neko atsume, VN and mellow warioware.)

I just can't see something which is fairly passive and designed to support short play sessions feeling at home on PC.

Maybe I'm wrong?

I just can't think of many fairly passive, comfy games I've sat down at a comp to play (other than VN type titles.)

>>
>>153873061
I'm not familiar with those other games but I don't think Animal crossing necessarily suggests short play sessions, at least before the point where you're just playing once a day to keep your town in check.

Lots of people have podcast games, so you could do that.

You also have roguelites, devil daggers etc, I think people are fine with short play PC games.
>>
>>153873061
You're going to have issues with people finding it on mobile. Just too much crap for people to dig through to find the jems.

That's my biggest problem with mobile at least.

Witch's Brew. A resource management game where you're a witch at the edge of a village. People come to you with problems and you solve them with spells. Overtime you slowly build a massive hut to produce more ingredients and more research to get new spells. You also desperately try not to get murdered by either angry townsfolk, someone you piss off, or one of the three major power groups in the area. Each time you die the GRAND CAULDRON draws a new village girl to it and creates a new witch to start over.

That said, it'll still take me the best part of a year, so I'd like to make a bit back from it.

>>153874075
True true.

Just a fair bit of extra work, as I'd want art assets the be reworked for each platform. (ie performance focused on mobile, pretty on pc.)
-Also, if going mobile, I'd like it to play in portrait.

Hey how do I go about making unique characters for my RPG game, using C# in Unity? By that I mean actual characters, not classes like 30 guys who are all Wizard class or something like that
My first idea was setting up a basic character template and using it as a basis for all other characters, just adding base stats and special skills/attacks/whatever else to the cs files of Guy One, Guy Two, etc. Is there a better way to do this? I intend to have at least 5 characters in the main party and a fuckton of bosses so if there's a simpler way to do it, I'd love to know

Some more work with behaviours, I implemented sequential behaviour trees. They run tasks in sequence, the entire sequence fails if any subtasks fail, and succeeds only if every task succeeds.
For example, the sequence for the tadpoles in the webbum is Rotate->Dash->Wait->Crawl

This is a step towards more complex behaviours, like hunting for food, which needs to run in a sequential steps.

A competitive creature design game, pretty much. You have size classes and a bunch of points for organs, like teeth, poison, armor and stuff, and a drag-and-drop behavior designer.
You can then release your creatures into the wild, and they'll be shared with other players, so it'll become one shared ecosystem.
You can compete for the #1 biomass, best predator or whatever, I could even do arena gamemodes, if the designer has enough depth.

I'm fairly new to Lua, and I would like to ask for the help of someone more knowledgeable. With the following code I can create an array (with one element) named 'test', with the value '23' at the 1st index for Lua to use:

lua_createtable(L,2,0);
lua_pushnumber(L,1);
lua_pushnumber(L,23);
lua_settable(L,-3);
lua_setglobal(L,"test");

It's all nice and works, but I wonder how can I push a table onto the stack instead of creating a global table for the Lua state? I would like to pass it as an argument for a Lua function.

Why do you think the media always tries to clickbait articles or mislead people about something to get people to argue about it?

Controversy is publicity that spreads itself. Do you think anyone would have bought Hatred at all if it didn't stir shit up?

Try to find that sweet spot where half the people will talk shit about your game and the other half will defend it.

Mother fucker. I thought I had this fucking movement code down for sure. Now I gotta figure out what the issue is, again.

So when does this stop? This whole, implement a couple dozen lines of code, see it doesn't work, then spend at least twice as much time making it work, when does that stop? I'm still pretty fresh to this whole thing, about 2 months, so I figure it's to be expected. This shit does stop though, right? Not debugging, of course not, but these constant little fixes.

I'm new to this general but from what i can already gather, most people just use unity instead of writing their own engine. I've tried to write my own over the past few years but its a wee bit overwheliming. It also doesnt help that i dont really know anything about common working structures of an engine, so i just kinda program as i think would work best. Theres still aspects i dont even know where to start.. like making events like message boxes etc.

It's oudated when compared to any modern engine. The only advantage to using it over Unity/UE4 is that you'll learn more about making a game with just a IDE. (no visual editors)
>>
>>153887793
The other one is definitely more interesting but this one fits better tonally/plotwise overall and it matches the title theme better I think.
The intro cutscene I'm gonna make is her before she goes to sleep, so then the title will be the gap that bridges that to the actual dream. I'm still gonna use the other picture for stuff though.
>>
>>153888226
Engines are not necessarily tools. As an enginedev 1MA you don't have to worry about anything except your workflow and your game, you don't need to make anything prematurely abstract.
>>
>>153888226
Well i did push all the memes aside and tried unity before.. sure its much faster to create shit but it takes away from the fun of programming for me kinda, and on the 3DS it runs like trash and is buggy as hell. It can't be helped.
>>
>>153887612
A game engine is basically anything that runs a game that isn't the game. A character - his model, texture, behaviour is the game. Loading, drawing and managing updates of all of this is the engine. It doesn't need to be customisable.
Even text engines classify as game ones.
>>
>>153888557

Well, it all depends on your definition of "engine". One thing's for certain, though; nobody here is creating tools for the sake of creating tools. If making a "tool", like a level editor, is a one-time cost for increased productivity down the line, why complain about it?
>>
>>153889005

Personally the biggest issue I have is when you turn back from an area. Logically when you turn around and head back the perspective should show as if you turned around, which is shown in the webm.

Despite this I expect it to be like most point and clicks where it is one consistent perspective. Expecting that and seeing retraced steps look different trips me up a bit. Myst did different perspectives too so this shouldn't be an issue. So maybe it is just lack of details?

Holy balls, 12 hours of dev!

Boss fight is functionally finished now. You can play the first 3 levels, fight the boss, and then proceed to the next set properly now, so essentially the demo is complete, content-wise.

I need to fix some animations on the Phase 2 Pit Lord so it looks less weird, and probably give him a third attack so there's some more variety besides falling rocks, but that's for tomorrow.

You play a cute maid that keeps a huge mansion clean. You have clean messes at the start of every day and during the day as they form.

>Avoid being in the way ("Master" NPCs will just walk right into you without altering their path because it's your job to get out of the way)
>Don't be loud. Disrupting master's guests or ambiance is an unmaidly offense
>Start dinner early. Make sure you're prepared for unexpected guests and a variety of tastes, but don't waste food either!
>Be a confidant. The family may grow to value your advice in private chats

From the video the problems I see are:
1. Way too much free damage and lack of input from the boss on the first phase
2. You stand there whacking him and only after a few hits does he then finally do something
3. Second phase is not much better
4. His falling rocks are easily avoidable
5. He has no zoning equivalent to the fireball.
6. the blood gimmick from the first phase isn't used again for whatever reason
7.ladders are seemingly useless
8. Invincible phase changes, they're bad, video games need to stop having them
9. There's no attack from the bottom

I could go on but you get the point. Might want to do some more work on him m8. Even if he's supposed to be an introductory boss.

So my menu is going to be along the top of the screen and be basically a wooden frame. I'm trying to come up with a good design for the tabs for the different parts of the menu (they're gonna be along the bottom, when you click the menu goes up and comes back down with the right things). Hey guys. I'm a CS major and very familiar with programming with most stuff. However I've never had to work with UI/graphics. But I'm trying to build a 2D card game.
What are some decent java libraries for this? Would like to to obviously look good.
I'm assuming it'd look best if I designed my own art or get it custom made.
Any advice is appreciated.
>>
Reminder that the best devs here don't necessarily have the best games.

The best devs
>Know how to handle criticism and downright shitposting, but don't let it impact their motivation
>Know when to take advice from outside sources (namely agdg)
>Post semi-often, and have significant progress to show with new updates
>Avoid arguments and instead ask what would make their game better
>are confident in their game design, but not so much so that they refuse to change it
Bad devs
>Listen too much to aggydag, don't take their own opinions into consideration
>Value their own opinions too much, listen to agdg too little
>Post the same progress multiple times, post "updates" often without significant progress, or post with no progress at all
>shitpost

Dumb question for gamemaker newbie.

How would I tell the console to do something once during a step event? For example if I wanted to add 1 to a value only once? Is there a way without alarms?
>>
In GameMaker, how do you deal with replacing a constantly-sized placeholder with variable width sprites? Right now it seems like you would either have to manually modify every single animation trying to replicate the old bounding boxes, or have a second object with the final sprites following your invisible player, with no real game logic on it whose only job it is to display the animations, so is free to change just about anything about itself..

I keep telling myself I need to make a small game first

H-hey does anyone need lewd sprites? Just tell me the size and of what variety of cute girl you need.

If you know C++. Unreal would be the best engine to work in. I dropped my fighting game project because my prototype turned out to be a lot more boring than I expected. Mind you my project was a 2d game on a 3d plane like the newer street fighters or guilty gear xrd (which is coincidentally done in unreal).

However it was really easy to set up input buffering, recreating that 3D camera, and setting up a system of priority to decide on which move to use.

My biggest issue I had with Unreal, and it may be completely different now since I haven't used it in a very long time, was how UI worked. I couldn't figure out how to have a simple UI work as intended. It was a train wreck and I couldn't really find good information online. However there are some people here who do use Unreal and they have good looking UI (like that space game dev).
>>
>>153907092
Aren't you the one being salty because someone is attempting real 3d engine dev instead of slapping libraries together like most of your "enginedevs"?

Yes. Yes you are.
>>
>>153907673
Unreal's UI system isn't very good but with UMG doing things like a fighting game HUD would be relatively painless. Slate is still incredibly difficult to figure out though.
>>
>>153907608
It's okay. I don't expect it to happen, so I'm just putting it in the backlog. If you ever change your mind and decide to sprite Kramer and Danny Devito, I'll be lurking :)

>>
>>153907673
I'm not going to bother with Unreal because the compile times and it's doctrine on smart pointers.

More importantly than that though I just am really interesting in writing my own renderer more than the game itself, and there will be no reason to start this project ultimately if I don't use the renderer considering I'm making something else right now in a popular game engine anyway.

I'm gonna just spend the whole night commenting my code and creating a to do list. I'm wasting so much time because of my own stupidity of stopping in the middle of doing important changes and then having to hunt down these changes later like a very self.vindictive scavenger hunt.

Florien moved onto Unity a while ago.

You can glimpse Tommy Refeenes' Actionscript Code loaded with switch cases as well for a split second in Indie Game: The Movie but it's hard to determine if it's spaghetti. It probably is. As for Tommy I have no idea if he even makes games anymore pretty sure he retired off Meatboy and doesn't gamedev anymore.

I guess I'm the one with the unpopular opinion here, but I actually prefer the long buildup for the boss. It emphasizes that he's stronger the enemies you just recently killed on screen and a big threat. Maybe if you added other animations to have something for the player to look at it might be more tolerable to wait for.

lewd jam game idea I had last night: Whack-A-Tit
Basically is whack-a-mole, but instead of moles, tits come out of the holes. You have to pinch the nipple to "whack" the tit.
There are different sized tits that give more or less points, flat loli tits give a lot of points but are harder to reach, but you have to avoid whacking men's nipples.
Inverted nipple tits need two pinches, one to expose the nipple and one to whack.

I'm already working on something else so feel free to grab this idea.

You caught me. The anime motivated me to learn 3D modelling though I've had the idea floating around since LWA2.
I've been wanting to make something like the Ratchet and Clank games since I loved those as a kid and I don't see many similar games on the PC compared to all the Mario 64 clones.

Ok, recreated No Mans Sky language system; naively generated procedural words (Literally just strings together vowels and consonants with % change of vowel based of previous and alternate "language" which just randomly strings together Japanese phonetics), database of words with bitflags for languages their known in, and a "knowledge stone" that teaches a new word.

Example results;
Input: Good day traveller
Out: Isiu ulr tuyoqea
Out (JP): Wemukeke ha orifuhoosefuteki

>>153912734

Anyone here any good at curses?
Is there a function which returns the character at a particular coordinate on a screen? getch() just moves the cursor then waits for user input.
I'm trying to implement conway's game of life. Do I need to use a 2d array or something instead of a window to store my values? Any other criticism is great too, I have no idea what I'm doing.
