I played like 8 characters in 4 before settling on my main who I play almost exclusively, which is how competition usually works. at least with us character loyalists

I won't argue about KI being buttonmashy, there's a character (sabrewulf) who's special ability is to literally just mash one button forever, but it's not a complete casualfest. It just focuses a lot on the mindgames around breakers/counterbreakers, and most other mechanics exist for the purpose of adding to the factors in that equation. There's still strategy to be had in KI, it just sacrifices part of the initial strategy to add another layer to it. Wether that's a good or bad thing is up to your tastes.

even if you dont like ki, you have to admit they put a lot of effort into it

i just wonder if theres a better way to make a custom combo game that has breakers.
like if you were to make breakers cost meter in ki then you'd have to make combos universally smaller, which kinda hurts the custom combos idea.

but the main problem with ki and doa is that no one wants to play a guessing game when they land the first hit in a combo, because you basically earned the combo with that hit.
