If you run a game with no competition, then you will eventually plateau and figure you can no longer improve.

A certain route isn't consistent enough so you never do it. You won't mash as hard as you think you can. You won't explore areas you've already routed. You'll think you've been executing something perfectly, but in reality there is a better, faster way to do it that you've never even seen.

If you want a speedgame to reach it's full potential, then you need to get more runners on it.

I don't see why it can't be about both. I think being a student of the game is arguably a more valuable and difficult skill to refine. "Competitive" anything is, bottom line, about getting the win. If anything, I think having strats hidden adds a very interesting additional dimension to speedrunning that you can't get out of many other competitive outlets. It reminds me of hi-score competitions in the old arcade days, where you could see someone's name on a leaderboard and have no idea how they got such an amazing score and have to figure it out and dive into the mechanics yourself to figure it out.
However, I say all this as someone who makes guides for his speedgame and would not hide strats myself because I am not altogether interested in being a "competitive" speedrunner. I just think it adds richness to the community to allow for it. Mechanical skill (i.e., grinding) is not and should not be the be-all end-all of speedrunning.

I don't blame Behemoth for wanting to have his 15 minutes of fame, but that kind of behavior encourages others to hide strats, meaning the WR could be unoptimized as the WR holder "reveals" a new strat every time his WR is beaten. Apparently that's what happened with Rayman 2, and the dude would just post a new WR with a new strat or two every time CloakedYoshi beat it

Every community has its own idiosyncracies that should be respected. If that's how things were in the Super Metroid community, then that's how things were.

But like I said, finding new strats and studying the game in order to find them is fully analogous to being very mechanically skilled. It's not like the Rayman 2 guy didn't earn his WRs. He just utilized a more varied toolset to get them. That's not to say I don't get where you're coming from. I do get it. I personally would fight to disallow strat hiding in my community because I think inculcating a hypercompetitive attitude is how many communities die -- see the FGC for an example.

Several games have died because certain people played lame as fuck and consistently won high level tournaments with them, and SF4 nearly died competitively when Fei Long players dominated the game because even though the strats were optimal, they were just shitty to watch and play as. For a more concrete example, you can almost directly say that Hilde players killed SoulCal4. In the same way, strat hiding can frustrate and stagnate speedrunning communities.

a lot of people forget how much work goes into actually memorizing and manipulating the core mechanics and quirks of the game itself and tend to get upset when all the information is not just handed to the most skilled players. races perpetuate the idea that these people are just inherently good and more talented than others but it just doesn't work like that in speedrunning. its all about the time spent and the work put in.
