Well now's not the best time to pick him up since he was hit with a fairly large nerf this patch, but better late than never since he might get nerfed even more later.

You probably won't read this but here's what I can think of. There's a lot of stuff to learn to be a good GP.

>Don't farm individual creeps with Q. The mana cost is not worth it, and you get like 2-4 extra gold til later. Instead, get the bandit mastery and harass your opponent for 10 gold every time. Grasp of the Undying is for fags.
>Barrel mechanics are an entire game on their own. First things first, learn their range so that you don't go full retard and place a keg outside another one's range. I have done this and I feel stupid every time.
>This might sound dumb, but unless you need heavy health sustain, pick up a D Ring. It will give you health and good mana sustain to poke your enemy. Mana is huge on GP!
>Rush Sheen > Triforce. Then get flat armor pen like Duskblade or Youmuu's, or straight into crit if that seems better.

As for kegs - Outside of a few situations, you generally have a "trigger keg" which is one you keep outside of the enemy's range to explode other ones.
Here are a few combos:
>Barrel, barrel, Q (then always auto them with your passive if you can) - Probably your most basic combo. Put a trigger keg down, put another one where you need it and instantly Q the first keg.
>Barrel, barrel, Q, barrel - This is how you properly do a triple barrel. Notice how it's like the first one, except the INSTANT you Q the trigger keg, put a third barrel down where you want. As the first two explode, the third will spawn in time. A bit hard at first but the trick is to put the 3rd barrel down QUICK.
Here's a good trick by the way, only Tobias and a few other good GPs do this. Versus a single target, you can barrel, barrel, auto THEN Q them, instead of just Q'ing the barrel. This does a lot more damage. If you passive them after, you even get Thunderlord's off (which I like to run)

Long Version:
Pros want safety and guarunteed good picks. Tank Ekko does enough damage to stick to the carry and is tanky enough to survive the actual incoming damage. They would prefer to not fuck up so they make him tanky instead of doing AP which has inherent risk.

Pros would ALWAYS prefer the safer option over anything with a bit of risk. This is why champion selection is also always limited.

Adding to this, be very wary of melees that can get close fast. Early on, plank is HIGHLY susceptible to close range fights, because he simply doesn't have the early game damage without his barrels. Riven, Fiora, Gnar, Wukong. Until you get some farm and items under your belt, be VERY, VERY, VERY FUCKING CAREFUL, against champions like this. Once they figure out they can dumpster you if they get past your barrels, the game is over.

As a safety rule of thumb, I like to also keep 1 barrel behind me, closer to my tower. This is just in case they jump on me and I need quick damage, a passive proc, or just movespeed in general.
