Speaking of Red Forest, I was kind of disappointed when I saw it for the first time in CS. People made it out to be a spooks zone, so I went in at sunset to really let all of it sink in. Listen - I personally believe misery is owed a nod of respect for the level of, (rusty tm), polish put into the mod. As far as game-play goes it feels unfinished and unbalanced but I could point out that - ' Never 2.2 tm' -might change some of that.

My last run of AMK Autumn 1.4.1 had like 30 fleshes on the island in the center of Dark Valley, which made getting Bullet through safely so he can later give you the scope a real challenge. A chimera had already taken out most of the bandits in the lab building. There was a huge battle between the military and bandits in the radioactive area before the Dark Valley level changer in the Garbage. AMK 1.4.1 has the best mix of quiet and frenzy of any mod for all of the games IMO.

SWO is my least favorite since it tends to overly dramatic and gloomy weather. Look in the repo if you want to use 1.4.1 instead, it's better. Also grab updated versions of the Lurk patches from the repo.

Or you can skip all of that work and install AMK Autumn Edition which comes with the best version of Atmosfear (the AA2 weather is a special version of Atmosfear for SoC), has better weapons and balance than Arsenal, improved versions of the Absolute textures from AA2, merges in several other cool mod and features, etc.

Regardless of which route you take, don't use the regedit downgrade anymore. Use the drag and drop downgrade patches from the 2nd post. AMK AE comes bundled with it.

I like my SoC to have periods of brooding quiet not just constant chaos. 1.4 is fine in its own right, but it's its own thing where 1.4.1 feels like SoC with the difficulty ramped up in a good way.

1.4.1's economy is easy better, you drown in money in 1.4. 1.4.1 also improved the gunplay and balance from 1.4 significantly. In general, 1.4.1 fixed a few bugs and tightened up gameplay all over.

You don't need to be at 1.0004 for the Starter pack, but that's not your issue. Vanilla gunplay is a bit weak which is probably your problem. Couple of options:
- Use the FPS shooter option in ZRP, it improves damage and accuracy
- Use the AMK ballistics mod from the SoC repo in the OP. 1.4.1 has good gunplay

I used the first in my first run and it makes things a lot better. The second option should be better.

Neither will fuck up your save, but back up your gamedata folder before experimenting since this is your first time modding this game sounds like.

What's the Starter modpack 2015 you mentioned? I assumed it's the standard mix of recommended first time mods which includes ZRP. But then you also mentioned an AKMS which I don't remember being in vanilla.

If you have ZRP look under gamedata for its modifier.exe program and use it to tweak stuff including the shooter option. Back up the folder so you can rollback if you fuck up.

You should be able to pick up an AK-74 at Agropom and it has better accuracy at range so switch to one. One of the higher level military patrolling above ground when you go for the docs has a scope on his rifle be sure to grab it, it's the earliest available one when you follow the storyline.

Forgot to mention this: enable ZRP's "first shot accuracy" option. By default the game includes a lot of factors into computing accuracy as displayed including actual first shot accuracy, recoil, rate of fire, etc. Just showing the first shot accuracy lets me makes better choices. I use a tweaked version of ZRPs version that file in every mod I play.

The emision you're talking about was on their second trip to the plant, I think, after they discovered the code door.

Fang and Ghost were forced to leave Strelok behind because of the emission and possibly Monolith resistance.

At the moment it's just density of object hit vs bullet penetration, but the end goal is to have the bullets density, weight, size and speed. And the density and travel length of the object hit.

I'm not going for realism here I just want some nice bullet penetration so you can actually deal some decent damage to targets behind wooden planks and such, and maybe add some nice destruction with it so that the aftermath of a battle will feel more intense when you view the destruction.

Don't you think that many parameters is a bit redundant, especially if you aren't aiming for complete realism? You could just use single variable to define bullet's piercing ability (much like in stalker), and then have speed and hit angle modify this value to determine whether an obstacle is penetrated or not. Or is this what you actually had in mind, and density, mass and size are just the values you will base that single piercing parameter off?

Don't know how much you are open to suggestions, but I think adding destruction isn't such a good idea if you plan on having player visit a particular location more than once. Although I admit: acquiring a substantial amount of explosives as alternative way to crack open a door leading to some underground facility sound fun as hell. Maybe just leave the destruction for places where not having one may seem like an "artificial" way of preventing player from reaching his destination?

All of those are going to just form a single parameter at the end, I just want those because I'm just guessing here, but the bigger a bullet is the more penetration it should have, the higher density the material has the more penetration it should have, and same thing for size.

I mostly want those parameters because density so bullets can be made of different materials, like cheaply made, normal and artifact enhanced versions. The math should look something like bullet penetration density * mass * size => hit density * travel length.

I'm completely open for suggestions. And I'm not gonna go Crysis levels of destruction, just being able to destroy planks and stuff, nothing major like leveling an entire building. Being able to blast open doors sounds like a cool idea instead of acquiring a key or card to open it.

Pistols in stalkers have about 50 mts of effective range. There are a couple that have more (the Beretta has like 1000 mts of effective range), but they are meant to be CQC weapons.

They also have poor accuracy and damage. Particularly your starting slav pistols.

The reason you're not doing shit is because:

1) At long distances your shots are missing them because of dispersion and bullet drop.

2) Damage is reduced the further the bullet is from the weapon's effective distance.

Get a SMG, a 9x19 pistol, or stop being a pussy and get close to the enemy.

Settlements are always less-than permanent closer to the center anyways, and the outskirts are, well, "tutorial areas", fit for rookies.
As for factions, there's going to be a LOT of those coming and going. It's strongly hinted that Strider's group form their own faction after the end of CoP, for example. The Zone as we know it is still only a few years old after all. Guide enters in 2007, the first proper expedition is winter 2009/2010, and the games take all take place in 2011/2012.

I'm more interested in seeing advanced anomalies, artifacts and mutants. And I'd like to hear more stories about legendary stalkers like Guide, or even just revisit old friends like Nimble. Plus, the older the zone gets, and the more factions that get involved, the more interesting the equipment there is going to get.

Still, I do miss the lack of mystique, it feels a bit as if the center doesn't hold any real secrets any more, not earth-shattering ones anyways.
Then again it's not as if a prequel could change that without a major retcon.

The games are somewhat unstable even at the best of times, I had half a dozen crashes in my SoC playthrough and my CoP playthrough I've had even more. There's a specific crash in SoC that you can run into in Garbage and you have to reset some value or delete something I believe.

I last figured out AMK to mod SOC but now I've got the itch again and have decided to try ZOA.

In two separate readme files I've gotten two separate instructions,

ZOA needs 1.0004
and
ZOA needs 1.0006

Which is it? I've tried installing my 1.0004 and upgrading to 1.0006 and can get vanilla to work, but after I copy the mod over it crashes before the intro (i have tried -notintro)

I've also tried working with my 1.0004 version and after applying the mod, I get the same error.

What am I doing wrong?

Not lying though. Texture wise the game still looks visually pleasing compared to Clear Sky and CoP.
The model quality isn't totally terrible as I recall it to be, but its still worse than the rest of the series. Levels are more memorable outside of remixes from CS even.

Gameplay might not be as good as later titles but its still surprisingly solid and I'm legitimately wondering why when CoP should in theory just be better.

At that point it becomes a matter of what plate material you have.

Let's say you have a shitty III ceramic plate, and then a III AR500 steel plate. The one advantage steel plates have (against many flaws and weaknesses) over ceramic is that you either beat steel entirely, or you don't do shit to it. You can dump 10 mags worth of 7.62x39 into a III steel plate and all you'll have done is make pretty circular splotch marks on the surface. The ceramic plate, conversely, will be turned into useless chunks and shards after the first mag alone, but is a shitload lighter and doesn't suffer the splash effect of bits of bullet potentially exploding off the plate and into your limbs that steel does.

Considering russia and other old WP countries have a hard-on for steel/titanium armor composites over the west's love of replaceable ceramic inserts, odds are your hard armors in STALKER are going to behave more like the steel example; some guy in an exo suit should basically take zero damage and minimal suit durability loss from some gopnik dumping 100 rounds of 7.62x39 into his chestplate.

It theoretically should be about as damaging as someone gently playing a drum solo on your chest with a pair of plastic spoons, but unless you really dick around with the underlying armor system values in the game, it's difficult to properly model the whole (below this caliber, your guns do literally nothing" thing.

I believe Misery tried and semi-succeeded, but then ruined it by jacking up the enemy health on top of that too, so barely anyone notices.
