I do not wish to be concerned with such tedium in future - I suggest you consider cultivating a Rich Inner Life, perhaps through a devoted study of Boethius. I do not expect that you possess the mental faculties required to comprehend his dissertations, but I am compelled to have you try, as I am ethically bound to offer my wisdom to lesser men when they so blatantly require it. Those weren't excuses. They were examples of what makes Aura's writing better than average.

What do you consider to be the differences between good writing and bad writing? What do you consider to be an example of great writing, and why?

>>
>>153573004
Can you fuck it?
>>
>>153580021
Okay, let's see. First of all, I got nothing to say about Aura. Not good, not bad. I honestly don't care. What bothers me it's the criterion you used. It looks like you had a list of things considered bad writing that you had to cross:
>heavily flawed. check. Can't be just slightly flawed and somewhat understandable/relatable, has to be heavy.
>show, don't tell. check.
and it's corollary:
>since you can't have the characters whose brain you supposedly inhabit express his own feelings openly because that's telling, I have to use metaphors and symbolism. check
These things are guidelines at best, not something that admits no exceptions and need to be preserved at any cost.

As for what I can consider good writing, it's nothing fancy like a list which takes into account the mores of a certain group of writters from a very specific time and culture. There are some formal elements which one needs to consider, but formal correction is a necessary condition for a work to be considered good, but not a sufficient one.
You can go Kafka and use long ass sentences with plenty of commas and semicolons, and it will still work regardless of being against of what they tell you in Writing 101. As long as the meat of the tale is tasty and the style you build around that quirk is consistent.
Or you can go Lovecraft. Waaa, purple prose. Yes, indeed. But he at least is coherent with it and the atmosphere of his tales stems precisely from that. You take it away and you'll have unremarkable crap. The resultig pacing is a bit slow for a 21st century reader, but you have to take into account when it was writen.
Tolstoi is slow as fuck too. Who cares about muh realism? The pacing is all over the place and not enough waifus!

I could keep going, but you get the idea: context dependency. The rules for writing a college essay don't necessarily apply to all visual novels.

Seeing games with long wordcounts has become a turn off for me since I just don't have the time to play them anymore. I try to play a little each day, forget half the story a couple weeks in and give up. Anyone else have this problem?
>>
>>153584572

Nor did anyone say that they do. It doesn't take a great deal of insight to understand that there are many different ways to write well - a quick comparison of Nabokov and Hemingway would make that obvious. The trick then is trying to understand why any given piece of writing is good, and there is no way to do that without citing specific examples. Symbolism and metaphor aren't required for good writing, but they definitely can contribute - as you say, guidelines. Aura makes use of them, and he does it well. I don't understand why you're trying to (incorrectly) extrapolate that observation to make everybody praising Aura's work seem pedantic.
>>
>>153584572
Out of all the posts in this conversation, this is probably the most pretentious of the lot.

IIRC I had better luck spreading things out, but ultimately it doesn't really matter, because no matter how smart you try to play you will eventually run up against a bullshit check for the one stat that you didn't train and die. Many times.

Your best bet is to make a bunch of saves so that you can roll back if you get stuck. Otherwise just train whatever you want, forge ahead, and die a lot to get a feel for what stats the route you're on actually requires.

The maids, Akiha, and the whole Mystic Eyes of Death Perception boxcutter knife-fighter idea are the only things of value in the game.

Because it takes time to develop an understanding of how to shape your style to suit your story. Few people have been writing VNs long enough to have a strong grasp on how that works (and I certainly wouldn't consider myself one of them).
>>

>>153710442
This. As long as what you're writing is interesting, and your intent is clear. Symbolism, metaphors, words people have to whip out their dictionary for, and all that jazz can certainly assist when done well, but they are ultimately only adornments to the story. The thing is, and this seems to be easily forgotten, is they can also greatly detract from the experience when overused or written in an attempt to attach far more meaning and importance to something than is really warranted.

I mean no disrespect to aura, but you can tell everything you need to know about his writing from the first couple of sentences in his introduction.
>I call myself Aura. But that's not who I am.
>Aura is nothing but a name for me compartmentalizing myself.
It reeks of tryhard. The man feels compelled to state things that are incredibly obvious in a cringeworthy and needlessly complicated way. There's nothing deep or insightful in what I've read of his work, it's merely been dressed up to appear as if there is. I really don't care to knock him, I just have the feeling he gets so wrapped up in how he's writing, that what he's writing ends up getting kicked to the curb.
>>
>>153711763
vast majority of poetry is pretty gay tbqhwy famalam
>>
>>153723291

That was the final KS blogpost, not his introduction. He was looking back on five years of work, a time after which I think some self-reflection was warranted. It's true that the pseudonymous identities we construct as visual novelists are often separate from our real selves, and there is nothing at all pretentious in stopping to ponder that for a moment.

I'd have to ask what you have read of his work, because judging a person (incorrectly) off two lines of a blogpost is just about the definition of judging a book by its cover.

I also don't get the feeing of try-hardness. His "dressing up" serves to add extra layers to the story which make his point all the more meaningful.

If you don't like his style, which writers would you consider good?

Introduction was a poor choice of words. To me it is him "introducing" himself and the team, but it is still clear that it was written some time after the game was finished, so that's my mistake.
I read his blog posts and Rin's route ages ago. I'm speaking from my experience with it from back then. I used these particular lines because they were easily accessible and short, while still being adequate enough to embody what I dislike about his writing.

> serves to add extra layers to the story which make his point all the more meaningful
I don't think they do. They felt tacked on in order to embellish the writing itself. I'd go so far as to say it was often times to the detriment of the story. While I think aura is obviously intelligent, and even if I thought he was a good writer, that wouldn't automatically mean I'd consider him a good storyteller.
Though it has been quite some time so I won't be able to provide specific examples from the route if you're thinking of asking. All I remember enjoying was Act 1. The rest I did not care for.

I agree that the visuals are nice, but you're comparing a veteran developer with many released titles to a thread in the earliest stages of conception with no prior projects. They could disappear in a week and never be heard from again like 75% of developers.
>>
>>153726943

Fair enough - I can definitely understand where you're coming from. I think a story should always aspire to be more than a story, though - it should ask questions and make an attempt to answer them, either directly or not.

I personally found Kafka dreary and aimless, and that Lovecraft lacked anything deeper than the surface. I've yet to tackle Tolstoy. For all that, I can appreciate that there are aspects of their writing which resonate with others.

Really nice looking pixel graphics and overall GUI. You work a drink mixing simulator while talking to people about their lives in some kind of cyberpunk dystopia.
>>
>>153727958
I pre-ordered it like three years ago or so, and had very high expectations having built it up in my head, so I do believe that has effected my outlook of the game. In my opinion: The writing was average, the music was good, the character art is amazing and the general cohesion of everything is amazing. It all fit together to make a good product, but I feel like it could have been great had the writing not fell short a few times.
>>
>>153728527
That's the impression I'm getting, though it's not like I've gotten into the meat of the game yet. I'm enjoying it, but it feels like it could have used some tighter editing.

oh and the old demo had a drinks system that was much better. you have to remember ingredients vs a book. you can also make drinks through mistakes not just a botched attempt. not so friendly for the average vn fan who sits through kinetic novels on auto, but fun for me
>>
>>153728867
Was it the same ingredients? I would fail so bad at that for awhile, I could only remember how to make beer and a few others without looking. It would have made it more fun though.
>>
>>153727501
>I think a story should always aspire to be more than a story, though - it should ask questions and make an attempt to answer them, either directly or not.
I can certainly agree with that to an extent, so long as it doesn't infringe upon the delivery of the story itself, or get so wrapped up in them that it starts to lose its identity. That said, I can see why you'd appreciate it. In the end, it is, like everything, all just a matter of preference.
>>
>>153726943
>I'd go so far as to say it was often times to the detriment of the story.
I completely disagree. On my first playthrough of Rin's route, I didn't pay any attention to the symbolism or the narrative structure or anything like that. I just enjoyed a moving story about understanding, being understood, accepting who you are, and accepting who others are. It was poignant and effective and universal.

It wasn't until after my first playthrough that I went back and picked apart all of the layers and noticed how meticulously put together it was.

That, in my subjective opinion, is an ideal story. Something that can be enjoyed on a surface level, but under scrutiny and repeat readings/viewings/playthroughs, offers something greater.

Don't get me wrong, succeeding on that surface level is the primary objective, but there is room for so much more than just the basic needs.

Everyone doesn't say they're great. Everyone says they're better than the worst generic weeb trash.

She's not illiterate, she has a style, and she focuses on the needs of the story she wants to tell rather than cramming everything into a dating sim formula in order to give you a range of perfectly pandering waifus. However, if you don't like the writing style, or you're not interested in those particular stories, or you generally want VNs to hurry up and get to the point, you're not going to enjoy the games and you shouldn't try to force yourself to play them.

Just because some people like them doesn't mean you have to either like or denounce them.

Unless you're a researcher. Then you pretty much have to.

Renpy is ridiculously easy to learn, you don't have to be an actual program to use it and use it well unless you're going for something especially ambitious
>>
>>153762385
Most actual programming isn't -that- hard if you can follow directions and get over the mental block of thinking it's more complicated than it is. But it looks such an enormous mess from the outside that people are often afraid to experiment.

>>153763493

>>
>>153763804
Most, I said. It really depends on what you're trying to do (and who's teaching it). If you've gone at it for a couple of years, you definitely could have wandered into parts of programming that are not easy or fun. However, I will bet that your couple of years gives you more than enough grounding to do anything you'd need to do in RenPy.

What makes you think that?

We read left to right, so the previous page(chapter intro) should be on the left and the next page should be on the right (chapter content).
>>
>>153788990
There are so many composers that they should be grateful to get any paying job at all
>>
>>153790039
Yeah, and I just think it would be easier to start reading from the left. I imagine that chapter image stays with you the entire time with how the layout is, in which case it's irrating to the eyes constantly looking to the right when you usually look at the left. If the image area becomes text on the next page then that's fine.
>>
>>153790057
If this is the case then why get huffy about it? Go hire one of the thousands of others.

>>153789895
Might be a case of offering lower rates in exchange for a cut, or of simply being used to working with people who did give them a share. I have no idea how common that is.
>>
>>153790568
>Might be a case of offering lower rates in exchange for a cut
I can't imagine this is ever a good deal for the developer unless you expect your game to flop terribly.
>>
>>153791384
It may not be the most advantageous outcome for the penny-pincher, but having your contributors share in your success can improve their commitment (meaning you get better work out of them) and provides an overall sense of fairness.

You may find that you feel a bit guilty if you earn $500K on your game and you only paid your musician $800.

I think one of the biggest benefits of giving someone a royalty (even if it's just a small percentage) is that it makes them more likely to promote the game themselves.

Depending on the reach that they have on social media, having them become an "advocate" for your game could be worth cutting them a few percentage points.

hi Sekai Project

>>153740571
WW does blog posts on a weekly basis, but I guess that comes with the territory when you release a new game every few months
>>
>>153791384
I think it's more for people who simply can't afford money up front. Paying someone in royalties is like "borrowing" money from them for the duration of the dev cycle, but then you have to pay it back with interest (I doubt people would take a royalty in place of upfront payment unless they expected the royalty amount to be more than they would have gotten directly). And like any loan, you can potentially "default" on it if your business venture fails, i.e. failing to hit projected sales = lower royalties paid out

Has anyone else had a weird issue with patreon trying to up your pledge without your permission? I made a comment on a creator post, then the page reloaded by itself. so, I have to put together a preliminary asset list (not anything finalized, just to use as a starting point) and I don't know the first thing about commissioning sprites. Is there a "standard" list of poses that people use for vn sprites? e.g. "neutral, happy, angry, sad, laughing," etc

I was recently reminded of the "brain in a jar" (and several other of the conversations in waifulbartending) after watching this video: https://youtu.be/l0JEvFXr7l4

it's this constant problem I see where people take an interesting premise and then completely ruin it with poor writing that comes across like a 18-year old who thinks they're enlightened because they took a freshman philosophy class, who takes questions and ideas that are centuries old and presents them as something new and exciting or edgy, because they themselves have only just learned about them.

Like i'm sure this is the kind of thing that makes 14 year olds on tumblr go "WHOA YOU JUST BLEW MY MIND" so I see how people get to the point where they think this (just read the comments on that youtube video, pic related) but as an adult I read this kind of stuff and it just all comes across as trite. (I'm not even that old, just a 23 year old right out of college)

>>
>>153823706

I kind of like it, but in some places the writing feels like it really needed some editing and I cringe every time someone says some sjw-ish shit (not that often, but fairly evenly sprinkle so far)

>>
>>153826210
post the convos? prepare for your name being used in his weird dev fantasy football league later since you're on his radar.

also from what i've heard he has legitimately scammed in the five figures range by now
>>
>>153825129
I think that the game is at its best when it's about fun character moments and watching the different personalities play against each other. That's actually something I really appreciate, a lot of VNs are just about dealing with one character at a time (player + another character), but not a lot of NPCs talking to each other.

The game is at its worst when it's trying to make social commentary, which always inevitably comes across as heavy-handed or preachy. Like I don't disagree with the message itself, but the game seems to go really far out of its way to say "by the way this is about a current issue, or an allegory for something people in the 21st century are dealing with!"

The thing about aesops is that if you find yourself needing to beat people over the head with it, it probably means it wasn't written very well in the first place.

He began work on a Juniper's Knot sequel, despite not being connected to the original team or having their blessing. Since then he's misrepresented himself and his projects whenever he can. He is utterly delusional and lacks any semblance of contact with reality.
>>
>>153826354
>>153826802
how does he scam people?

he seems to want to do big things, but has no idea exactly what he wants to tell, and has no idea how a production workflow should be like.

he thinks money from KS will gush in just because "stupid weebs" will dish out money if we hire japanese VA and illustrators to do artwork. he has nothing but disrespect and belittles his target audience at every chance, as if there is some personal vendetta.

He claims to want to concentrate on writing the scenario instead of "being the producer this time", but when asked about the story, he says nuki-ge sells even without a story, so story is secondary and "weebs" drop cash over art uncontrollably...

I'll get some convos up. How does he scam artists? I would like to warn a few japanese artists who will begin work on his project soon.

delusional elitist guy out of touch with reality, thinks he has all the money in the world because everyone would line up to fatten his pockets with $100k if he starts his first kickstarter/game/with 0 staff having any prior experience.

wants to focus on writing script for the game, but can't answer when asked to explain or at least tell me what's the message or special part of his game/story he wants to make. (when production is set to begin in a few days.)

also has fake addresses linked to unrelated businesses, uses false alias for business correspondence and has many prior scam allegations... and failed projects.

I do my best trying to guide him to either

1) help him realize what he actually wants so things become easier for everyone

2) help him realize he doesn't know what he really wants to do / so he doesn't waste any more of our (other staff's) time.

and if he's going to continue even though he doesn't know what he's going to do, then I still try to find a way to salvage or make the best of the situation so the others involved don't get hurt too much.

But it seems my advice is on deaf ears.

OTOH people often disagree a lot about what qualifies as "beating someone over the head". Like, you get people who think that mentioning any character is gay, ever, means that you are a slave to the homosexual agenda, poisoning our youth.

Obviously you want to try and be a little careful about how over-the-top you are in beating your drum, but you're still likely to run into situations where things you think are 100% normal are treated as horrifyingly radical to some readers.

It sounds like Sekai negotiated with the Japanese devs as if they already had the fantranslator on board, and Sekai refusing to contact him after initial talks didn't go well is likely just Sekai trying to make him desperate to sell his translation for peanuts.

tl;dr Sekai screwed up by using outdated negotiation tactics.
>>

He already translated half the game and they have the needed tools to do program work. Aroduc is experienced, reliable, fast, and good. Why wouldn't they hire him if he has half the project done? He's worked for JAST before, so he has experience with localization companies. I want to do a war drama, but I don't think there would be much interest.

The romance option, because pandering yo, would alternate between the frontline and the capital where the protagonist finds love or something. I'd like to do something along the lines of Jin-Roh. The other thing I was thinking of was an isekai sort of story in the same setting, which is a post-apocalyptic desert which has clawed itself back to a 1950s/60s level of technology. Honestly, the real inspiration for this setting is Now and Then, Here and There - so an isekai story seems more appropriate. I think a potential audience might be more accepting of war drama if told through the eyes of an everyman thrust into this world.

I finally got around to playing the Heirs and Graces demo and holy shit, the sim part is extremely annoying. The stat checks don't come off as hard, they come off as completely random - there's no hint whatsoever about the things that you need until after you've failed the check, so you're left raising eveything blindly.

Worse yet, every stat is associated with a character, so if you don't know what to raise, you might try to max a particular stat (since maxing it it also a requisite for the sex scenes).

The setting i also confusing as fuck. One of the LIs mentions fighting Amukiki, which would meand this is set roughly after Loren... but wasn't Loren a Conan-style fantasy world? The setting in H&Gs look more advanced to me.
>>
>>153879904
The lumpy looking breasts and the meaty hands are primarily what bothers me.
>>
>>153880495

I follow a few EVNs, but is there a combined pastebin/doc somewhere that has collected these projects? I want to know who is actually releasing stuff, particularly from channers and /evn/ posters. Here are the ones that I know have some people from chans involved at least:

>Love, Money, Rock n Roll - followup to Everlasting Summer, expected release 2Q of 2017, demo coming out this month or next probably - http://lmr.su/en/
>Missing Stars/Mentaru Shoujo - KS but with mental disabilities, 5 years in development and no fucking demo yet - http://somnovastudios.org/forum/
>Twofold/Work in Progress - NEET goes to community college or something, demo out but no final release date - https://twofold.salty-salty-studios.com/
>Human Reignition Project - scifi story from the people who did the Yuri Highway Blossoms kinetic VN, the demo was awful but now they're focusing on it fully since HB was released - http://reignitionproject.com/ (more on their twitter)

Aside from that...it'd be lovely to get a read on what /evn/ folk are up to. This thread seems to die a lot so when I come looking its not here sometimes.

Ooooh, you're one of those.

In principle I agree, and Id like to see it exist.

But it would suck if it were made and like 20 people ever bought it though.

There are still a lot of good stuff out there, like in any medium. And of course, just like in any medium, the overused crap always get produced in a massively higher number, because producers want money. I hope you realize that this kind of argument could be used for every commercial medium in existence.

You want money and be 'respectable'? Fucking kys

Most people are too dumb to understand anything other than mediocre, common crap anyway.
>>

That is true, but the problem just has the potential to be more acute when the audience is already niche and not very large.

Seriously what's with the hostility? Are you one of those purists who think artists shouldnt care about money because it's a "lower" goal or whatever? And I didnt say anything about "respectable" other than VNs are usually seen as strange by normies. I never said I particularly cared about that.

Did someone put piss in your coffee? Seriously.
>>
>>153902451
It's fine to be a newfriend, but to make a post saying that you're interested in utilizing a medium while shitting on the majority of that medium's audience AND being a jewy cunt is a different matter altogether.

If he had just come in and was like
>hey lads I've been working on a sci fi story, and VNs seem like a neat way to bring that story to life.
>are there any good scifi VNs out there? would anyone be interested in something like that? any advice?
and then we would give him shit for being incredibly fucking vague with "sci fi story" and we would press him and eventually it would come out that his idea is uninspired garbage and we would make fun of him and yeah maybe that wouldn't actually be better than how it originally played out but cmon his idea is probably garbage if we're being honest

Honestly it seems like it'd be hard to think a VN is a good idea if you do.

Monetarily it's not. However, I think having visual representations of the cosmos and your alien aquaintances would be a good fit for it.

Hail satan.

Anyway, would a Now and Then, Here and There sort of isekai story be interesting? I've had this idea of some generic "gotta help everyone" LN protagonist end up conscripted into an army in a bitter, post-apocalyptic struggle that pretty shits on that whole ideal; but it could also show how much small acts of kindness can mean in such a shitty situation. I'm rather inclined to set it in a tank, so tank interior BGs can be reused quite often.

Other than the shelf the overall perspective is utterly fucked up in that particular background.
Its not like I can't do perspective, its just that I choose not to be so tight on it for aesthetic purpose.
The shelf though, is rather plain obvious so I try to fix that one.

Is there a rule against promoting your own project around these parts?
>>
>>153950482
Just promoting your project is a no-no. Talking about it during development and stuff is cool though.
>>
>>153950482
Dropping in out of nowhere to say HEY GUYS CHECK OUT MY KICKSTARTER MY GAME IS BETTER THAN ALL OTHER GAMES will get you mocked.

The original post said it was fine to talk about your project, but that you shouldn't drop into this thread JUST to say "I made this game and it's great and you should play/buy it, bye now"

That holds true whether it's commercial or not.

Also, you need a new thread.
