I'd made a Blood DK for leveling, however planned on going Unholy because apparently they're really good DPS and have an easy time getting into Mythic Raids. I know a lot of top guilds(I'm a recruit in Easy as well as the only disc player) are coming up with strats specifically for the gold talent Barrier.

It's likely that during some bosses heavy AOE damage parts, disc priests can solo heal the entire thing while Barrier is up if it's viable for everyone to get in the barrier. Holy priests actually compliment disc well because they make it so we can spam PW:R for free for a couple seconds, which means we can get 20 Atonements up literally FOR FREE.

This spec is going to have a bad rep in Legion, because everyone that played braindead disc in WoD thinks it'll be similar now, but that's simply not the case. This is probably the hardest spec to play in PvE by a significant margin, so most disc priests are going to be awful and make others think the spec is ass.

As bad of a rep as it's getting and will get, it boggles my mind that people think this spec cant deal with mass AOE damage. This spec is probably the best spec in the game when it comes to dealing with burst AOE damage, and 4th when it comes to dealing with sustained AOE damage(behind MW monk, rdruid, and rshaman).

Imo in the healing roles within raid, disc ranks like this:

Healing to tanks: 2nd

Burst AOE healing: 1st

Sustained AOE healing: 4th(possible as high as 2nd, but wont know until raiding happens)

Not sure where they rank on single target spot healing, but it's probably somewhere in the middle.

DPS among healers: 1st. We definitely do outdps tanks by a significant amount, but will always be lower than real DPS classes.

I rolled a Dranei and did quests up till about Level 30. So I know about the Dranei crashing and other random stuff but then I did Invasions until Level 57 and hopped over to Hellfire Peninsula.

Did me skipping all the leveling normally fuck me up story wise? I'm looking up lore videos now I'm just surprised there wasn't more stories, I expected at least a cinematic when I went over to BC content but whatever.

After finishing 2 zones I queued for some dungeons to finish off the quest lines, and every group acted like they've been farming this shit for months

A lot of it, be warned, is pretty contrived, cringey "we must save the world, friendos! Huzzah" garbage.

But the books that they hire actual authors with the ability to properly write dialogue and tell a story, its pretty good. I reccomend this path to learning the story. You cant learn it all from the books, but if theres a book for it, its probably a lot more interesting/makes more sense than other methods.

So in raids I think you're going to have slightly more chances to cast Smite than you do in 5mans, so whatever DPS(and by extension, HPS) you're doing now will go up in raids. Disc is going to be doing more DPS than tanks by a bit, but less than real DPS obviously. The damage they contribute during progression can be the difference between wiping on a boss and killing it.

As far as healing on meters in your raid, on fights with lots of big burst AOE, I expect the top tier disc priests to be outhealing every other class given equal skill. On fights with more sustained damage that only a certain group takes(like Butcher in HM), but you can spam smite more there, I can see disc being anywhere from 1 to 2. Sustained aoe damage thats unpredictable, I see us anywhere from 3rd to 1st. High tank damage but low raid damage, I expect disc to only be behind the holy paladin in your raid. Maybe you can even beat the Hpal depending on the extra random mechanics. On fights with sustained AOE damahe but lots of adds, I wouldn't be surprised to see disc topping meters easily because you can PtW everything.

Being a disc priest is fun. I got 110 on my resto druid today(got 110 on my priest yesterday, and honestly since disc is BY FAR the hardest spec to play in the ENTIRE game, if you're up for the challenge, you'll never get bored and you'll be having the most fun ever.
