SA2 was the last 3D game to have decent critical reception until Colors.

What I mean is that Shadow is presented as a dark, serious character in a series that originally took aesthetic inspiration from old theatrical cartoons like Felix the Cat. Imagine Daffy Duck or some other cartoon character scowling and carrying around realistic-looking guns (pump-action SMG in StH's opening movie notwithstanding) while occasionally pausing to whinge about their dead little sister and wanting to kill all humanity. Better yet, look at that edgy Looney Toons reboot that was on Kids' WB in the mid-2000s.

Not saying that Shadow isn't salvageable or should never appear in any Sonic media again (the comics under Ian do a great job of consolidating all the Naruto-tier DARKNESS faggotry and cartoony wacky stuff into a mostly stable and entertaining Saturday morning cartoon-esque tone), it's just that his inception and origin is questionable at best.

Knuckles was introduced as a rival and didn't really become a dipshit until later. Yeah he was tricked in his first game but that was legit motivation to have them fight and team up in the second half of the game. 2D knuckles was valuable. He added a new gameplay style for people who didn't want to FAST as much and wanted to explore instead.

Eggman doesn't really need scratch/grounder OR cubot/orbot. I don't see why he needs minions except to explain his plans to, functionally they're just story devices and the series doesn't really need story, nor has it ever been known that story is the franchises strength so they could go and we wouldn't lose much.

Amy is the girl (tm) she gets in on representation, a goal to accomplish ie rescue and just because she's cute. Also again, the stalker thing only happened later. 2D amy was valid.

It seems to me that your complaints are valid about those characters in regards to their later appearances ie their flanderised forms. But they did originally serve purposes and were pretty alright at their jobs. I mean if we're talking strictly in a gameplay sense, I think they're all valid characters. But they're just not always being utilised well. But that's the old argument of there is no such thing as a bad character only a bad writer.

Knuckles offers more to the series than shadow for sure. After his success we got silver and that is way too many hedgehogs. The series worked better when sonic was unique, not when he had like 5 clones. At least vary the species and give them different traits. Fists vs Feet, Speed vs Strength, that works. All we really needed for a fourth was a swimmer. Speed, Flight, Tunnelling and Swimming would be the full range of motion for gameplay. If they made Amy the Swimmer we'd fill that need and I think it'd make an interesting dynamic. You could do something like Heroes or Boom with the instaswap character function (like how Yai is the swimmer in Goemon's Great Adventure) and make swimming fun instead of water being a punishment.

It's a part of me. I've been a fan since the beginning in 91 and am really invested into not just the franchise but Sega as a whole.

I still greatly enjoy the adventures and don't think I'll ever tire of it. If it died off completely, I wouldn't be me anymore. Thankfully, even if the unlikely event of Sega going under, Sonic will still be around as a valuable IP.

Orrr did you mean when the series started going downhill? Personally, I think that Heroes started it. I remember it being marketed as "a return to Sonic's roots, but in 3D" but ultimately it felt like a poor man's Adventure title. It had multiple playable characters, but they're basically all the same. It had a story, but it was watered down and made no sense. You played different the game from different characters' points of view but their stages are all the same. It tried to be Adventure 3 but failed pretty miserably. Likewise, it was nothing like the old genesis games.

I grew up on classic Sonic, and was never exposed to 3D Sonics.

Like after Sonic Mega Collection there's this huge gap with only the Advance trilogy/Sonic Battle and the comics, so I was somewhat spared of all the baggage. Looking back now its probably because I was a poorfag and couldn't afford many console games.

Basically I was a casual fan whose investment petered off at the right moment. Now Mania has sucked me back into this rabbit hole and I'm morbidly entertained by all the stupid Sonic 06 and Boom crap among other things. Here I am obsessively playing the Taxman Sonic 1 mobile port and buying Sonic CD on Steam... Send help. I may bravely attempt to play a 3D Sonic but I don't know what to start on... SA2, Sonic Colors or Lost World? (I've played Sonic Adventure DX about a year ago).
