But I think the biggest problem here is I don't see your whole point. Why does Nyarly have to be the series' overarching villain? I mean, humanity's shadow, I get it. Hell, if you want to argue that he was somehow, somewhere responsible, directly or indirectly, for events in 3 or 4, I would be fine with that. But what the hell does that add to the series? Persona games have, with only small bits connecting them, been standalone and more concerned with a message/theme in a self-contained story than some continuing plot.

I don't think it's too much to ask for some continuity in Persona. It isn't like Tales or Final Fantasy where every game is its own self-contained world, these games all take place after one another in the same country on the same planet.

Even if it isn't, and the thieves create the Palaces, the fact that people are getting demony in the real world as seen in the trailer and the real life Casino you invade in the prologue makes it clear something demonic is going on and the thieves are just reacting to it.

there is continuity though, whether it's actual stuff coming back like the velvet room and igor or thematic elements. i don't think he's very core to the series for the same reason i think that the series has done alright ditching philemon as well. even hashino has shown a willingness to ditch the high school and/or japan aspect of the series with his original P5 idea, so it's clear there's not many locked down standards for the series. i think the games benefit from being more standalone even just on a plot level, arena and ultimax were pretty good examples of how poorly it can be done i feel, and while the returning characters from P1 weren't offensive, i didn't think it was convincing that it needed to be a mainstay of the series.

batman's also a series built around a recurring set of heroes and villains and countless what-ifs and alternate stories, and joker isn't also the central threat towards batman, he's easily the most recognizable villain and considered his direct foil, but he's given time off and other villains can be independent from him. that's actually one of the biggest complaints lobbied at the stories in the arkham games, the joker is always revealed to be the big bad, and after the first game it's often shoehorned in out of nowhere. all the new villains get tossed to the side and it always ends in the same repetitive fight with the joker.
