Ulmite Paste Edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Turns are gonna be real slow for a while, I'm very sorry fellows. Having some weird issues with my PC and will be borrowing someone else's for a while every day and installing Dominions on there. I just won't really have any control of when. They will still be done, though.

Well, besides both being good and superficial similarities like both featuring many mythological creatures and both being divided to separate strategic and tactical components, not really. Many of the more fundamental mechanics are very much different, like Dominions having simultaneous turns and no direct control over battles (instead being able to deploy your troops and mages and give them scripted orders) and generally coming from /tg/ wargame lineage rather than fairly typical 4X.

I'm not quite sure, but magic item loss in general is super fucked and in need of a buff.
It's a major reason why 75% of the items aren't worth forging, because you're going to lose that fancy sword when the guy catches a crossbow bolt, and none of the twenty other commanders with him think to get it back.

Are random events common or rare when a game says all other settings are default?
Creating a game in the client has them at rare by default, but llamaserver has them at common when you create a game from there so it's a little confusing.
>>

This is the least confusing thing you will encounter in this game.

Those crappy ulm heroes don't count

So one of the things that bothers me the most about dominions is that some nations have a lack of H3's which is a huge disadvantage late game. Now I know if you're in a position to win you're also usually in a position to grab a water province and make some bishop fish. Or get an artifact to boost an H2 to an H3. But that doesn't sit well with me thematically.

2 fixes I thought of:

Every nation has a Conj 8/Conj9 H3 summon. Late game super expensive summon and not cost efficient compared to the bishop fish, but If you're a super powerful god seizing control you should have some super powerful servants if you're going to be Pankoman.

Second idea I had was Pretenders being able to create Avatars. If you're a being powerful enough to claim godhood, you should be able to create an Avatar of yourself. Now I'm not sure where this would fall on research, it might even be you can do this if you have a certain number of ascension points (though I guess that would encourage snowballing). But your god creates an Avatar of itself which is essentially a copy sprite but faded with 20% less skills and half magic paths, but it can claim thrones and will bless all your troops with it's presence.

Just some thoughts.

O3Mis1 is incredibly doable for every nation that wants order. Mis2 is still pretty okay, but is tons better if you have fortune tellers, and triply so with non-cap only ones. Mis3 unlucks a shitton of bad events and while it won't totally cripple you, the province/gems/gold lost events will be annoying as shit.

Fortune Tellers are best when you can recruit them in any fort, and it's better to just mass them there since those are much more important than your other provinces. Spreading them around in every province under your dominion is tedious, wastes upkeep/potential rp, and considering most have >10% chance of mitigating a bad event not terribly useful.

Keep an eye on your other scales if you take misfortune since it + drain scales means you have a good chance of losing gems.
>>
>>153328761
>it + drain scales means you have a good chance of losing games

>>
>>153328761
>Mis3 unlucks a shitton of bad events and while it won't totally cripple you, the province/gems/gold lost events will be annoying as shit.
Couple things -

So first off, you are right that it's bad to take Mis 3. It has been tested and determined that O3M3 gives less gold than O2M2 even if only measuring cap income.

However, your reasoning is off. Misf 3 doesn't unlock a huge number of new events, and most of them also require another scale. The real problem is the way luck scales work. Basically, imagine a sliding scale where you've got unc good, good, bad, unc bad. Misfortune pushes events towards the bad side. This means that not only do you tend to get more bad events, you also both get a reduced chance of good events and a higher chance of WORSE events.

Riley already has them. Basically, if you attack anything else but S mage you're screwed. If you have 2 water bottles, you're not so screwed. If you attack an S mage and lose the duel, you're screwed.

Dancing shield gives you a 50% chance to block ANY attack that is not AN or ignores shields, if I remember correctly. It is a good item, but it's not like you'll want to craft it unless you have nothing to put in that other misc slot of your thug/RoS caster.

Dancing trident amplifies your single-target attack power, but again, it's not like you specifically want it made, as there are more useful items for that misc slot.

TL;DR: both are situationally useful. If you get them from event, good. If you have nothing else to craft for those misc slots, and you NEED that thug power, okay.

If you win, your champion will have to keep going to the arena until it dies. That means next time people are going to send in troops with enfebleement bows and other similar stuff to cripple your hero.

I love the idea of the arena, but it´s very poorly implemented. It´s just not worth it to send in anything strong.

If it´s a weak mage, then there´s little chance of victory.

If it´s a strong mage, then there´s much better (and less risky) things for them to do.

The only situation where this works is when you spam cheap, weak astral mages to Magic Duel the opponent´s very expensive stronger S mages or a pretender/whatever with very high S. As long as you´re within 6 levels of difference, there´s at least a little chance one of them will be successful. Make some communions to boost it up and you can nuke high S pretenders with cheap mages.

But that´s it. Nature and death magic are much more useful for assassins. Spamming little creatures or skeletons usually results in victory.

Been reading on it some time because of that price tag. It seems to be quite interesting, and more about learning strategy than learning the game. I´ve read some AAR in forums and it seems to behave quite like a tabletop wargame.

There´s also the point of you losing control of your troops quite often. For example, many can´t disengage from melee so they get "stuck" until the enemy withdraws or one of them breaks; broken morale units try to escape; units that have won a melee engagement will usually pursue the opponent, sometimes also leaving the map (they might come back later if they pass a roll, but it might be too late). There´s also very strict rules regarding facing and engagement: some troops can´t charge against cavalry at all; you can´t just wigle a formation through narrow spaces between others to hit an enemy there at the end like you would in Total War. Units generally move forwards, and enemies that aren´t right on the front can be harder to reach or simply out of reach.

This kind of thing has pissed off quite a lot of people, but it´s only historical accuracy and I´m pretty fine with it. It just requires you to actually think BEFORE you go all in because tightly packed pike formations are everything but mobile.

What do you say we get it together and jump into a PBEM, just like that?

My understanding is that if you have small number of high research mages, drain has less impact compared to large number of low research mages. Hope that might help. Rather sure I said that R'leyh was already in the process of taking land nation capitols a few turns ago, and I am relatively sure I spread the word of R'leyh already having multiple fully kitted N9 Golems. For most nations banishment spam takes a lot more investment than skellyspam.

You want to be recruiting mages anyway, but recruiting priests means turns and gold not spent on very important mage support.

>>
>>153353330
>name wont work on phone

>>
>>153355764

Indie priest can be recruited nearly anywhere and they are fairly cheap. Most people want to build a few temples around to strengthen their dominion anyway so you'll be able to build those priests as needed from those non-forted temple provinces without cutting into your mage production, whereas the skellyspammer WILL have to use his forts and researchers to enact the strategy.
>>

Arco actually has a sub lined up, but the Admin is the one staling out.

>>
>>153356206

>>
>>153356551
Even split is fine, I'll sent my plans to you in game so we don't collide again.
>>
>>153354812
You are wrong. Drain burdens you a lot more if you are using for research a good but expensive mages and less if a bad but cheap.
Let's use textbook example of MA Mari mages: Initiate (45 gold to buy and 36 per year for upkeep) and Witch Hunter (185 and 74 per year), note that Witch Hunter is sacred, so his upkeep redused in 2.
Initiate provdes 7RP per turn, Which Hunter 11 RP. So, doing a simple math, you can found out that Initiate's cost of 1 RP is 6,43 pounds and upkeep of it is 5,14 pounds per year. For a Witch Hunter 1 RP costs 16,82 gold pounds immediately and 6,73 per year. Note that upkeep is almost the same, so basically that means that in terms of maintenance in a long run in the neutral conditions Initiate and Witch Hunter have almost similar impact on your treasurary.
Basically, what does it mean in general? It's fucking means that if you are taking Drain and all your research-slaves losing RP, then it's a lot less harmful to lose 1 RP worth 6,43, then 1 RP worth 16,82. And visa versa Magic scale grants your mages RP, so for you it's much more profitable to gain FOR FREE RP worth 16,82, than 6,43.
So Initiates are your choise in the Drain and Witch Hunters in the Magic.

There is one more insagnificant point, that you have to spent 2 turns to reqruit Initiates, worth research power of 1 Witch Hunter. So using Initiates your research will snowball slower. But in the long run it's not that important if you have a lot of forts to reqruit mages, or you have limited economics, so you can not reqruit mages in the all your forts.

Basicall you was totally wrong. Cheap researchers loves Drain and expensive researchers loves Magic.
>>
>>153356529
No, if the admin was in the game at all, chances are they were Ermor or C'tis, who are both now AI'd.
>>
>>153356367
>Most people want to build a few temples around to strengthen their dominion anyway so you'll be able to build those priests as needed from those non-forted temple provinces
Indie priests may be fairly cheap, but you need quite a lot to deal with skellyspam. 60 gold each adds up, on top of the cost to build a temple.

Unless you're trying to dompush (or in a few other specific cases), you don't need unforted temples. They're a risky use of money because they can get raided and disappear.

>whereas the skellyspammer WILL have to use his forts and researchers to enact the strategy.
While he does need more gold of mages to pull off skellyspam than you need priests to shut it down, he can use those mages for things other than skellyspam whereas your priests are worthless against anything but skellyspam.

Basically mages are a better investment because they are versatile and not tied down to doing one single thing. Also, they're useful in peacetime.
>>
>>153357194
That purely depends on the nation and what mages we are talking about. What doesn't vary is that if you use 7RP mages for research, the increase in research rate per turn is almost halved. Upkeep may be more or less, but that's not the issue, the issue is your research is being held back massively, most players are limited by the amount of researchers they can recruit per turn rather than the amount of researchers they can pay upkeep for.
>>
>>153357194
You are bad at math and this game. Please play soothsayer Sauro and la Ulm with drain in every game I am in.
>>
http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=Olathe

You guys know you want to join. We even have a Ermor now!
>>
>>153357194
Mage recruitment turns are vastly more valuable than gold, though you can actually turn enough gold into more mage recruitment turns.
>>
>>153357194
Except losing 1RP on a 7RP mage means you lose 14% of your total research speed, while losing 1 RP on an 11RP mage means you only lose 9%. Taking Drain 3 when your main researcher has 7RP means you'll be cutting your research speed almost in half, which is nothing short of disastrous.

Your argument doesn't make sense anyway. Sure, in terms of RP/gold you lose more if you have more expensive mages, but if you care about RP/gold over RP/turn you wouldn't use those mages to research to begin with, so it's a moot point.
>>
>>153357194
okofire pls go
>>
>>153357194
This is terrible advice and you fail at math.

Some numbers:

Initiate upkeep per 100 RP (magic 1):
>37.5
Initiate upkeep per 100 RP (magic 0):
>42.9
Initiate upkeep per 100 RP (drain 1):
>50.0
Going from magic 1 to drain 1 increases the cost of research by about 33% when using initiates

Witch Hunter upkeep per 100 RP (magic 1):
>51.4
Witch Hunter upkeep per 100 RP (magic 0):
>56.1
Witch Hunter upkeep per 100 RP (drain 1):
>61.7
Going from magic 1 to drain 1 increases the cost of research by about 20% when using witch hunters

It should be obvious from the above that a nation using witch hunters to research gets hurt less by drain. While they'll be worse off than initiates in all these situations, the gap is closer at drain 1 than it is at magic 1.

If you go all the way to drain 3 you'll find that the gap is basically nothing - witch hunters are as good at research as initiates there (in terms of upkeep only, please note).

>>153358690
Early on that's very true. Later in the game, assuming you can recruit as many mages as you have gold for is a decent rule of thumb.
>>
>>153358042
It's only correct in the early game when you still have money and few places to recruit mages. But already in the midgame it's far more important to have reasonable RP cost, rather than a lot of expensive mages doing your research.

>>153358110
You are bad at the game yourself.
It's obvious that having Magic is always better, rather than having Drain. Those who are having Magic always the leaders in the research graph, disregarding nation.
But if you are playing with Drain (a lot of reasons you may have to do it), it's obvious for you to recruit cheap RP mages everywhere, rather than expensive but few in numbers ones.
Using your example, LA Ulm with the Magic scale will pierce research score graph fast and will remain on top. But LA Ulm with the Drain Scale, won't be perfect in that aspect, but will be decent at least, or maybe even in the leading group in terms of research.
Do your math, nigger.
>>
>>153358907
RP/turn is the only matters early in the game, and only if you need to amass your research. But very soon, you'll reach your saturation point in terms of economics and you'll regret not buying cost-effective research-slaves.
>>
>>153359017
>Do your math, nigger.
Not him, but I did.

See >>153359005

Drain scales cause a larger increase in cost per RP when using cheap mages than expensive ones.

Bah, if you've run out of gold to make new mages as you've been doing previously, it means your not keeping up the offensive momentum.
You need to eat fuckers, and take their gold, and keep making more mages. And use that greater amount of mages to eat fuckers and take their gold.

For example, in the Drain 1 each Initiate provides 6 RP, having 5.14 upkeep. So for 100RP they will have 85.67 upkeep. I can't see how you've got 50.

>you'll regret not buying cost-effective research-slaves
"Cost-effective" is relative, though. If you have drain, your "cost-effective" research slaves will be seriously underperforming since the RP loss is far more serious if you have many low-path mages compared to having fewer high-path ones.

I agree that in general, using cheap mages for research is a far better choice than using expensive ones, but that doesn't mean your assessment of when to use drain isn't completely retarded. Which mage is more efficient overall depends on the nation, but in general it's a bad idea to take drain if you have easily massable researchers, since your overall research speed will suffer more per point of drain the less base RP your guys have.

If you have 100 mages with 7RP and then take drain 3, you end up with 400RP/turn. If you have 50 mages with 14RP and drain 3, you end up with 550RP/turn. It's the same base RP amount for each, but the guy with the expensive mages will research way faster than you. Good luck playing catchup, especially since that guy will most likely be more capable of actually using those mages in battle. Even though he has far fewer mages than you do, he ends up doing better in every aspect of the game.

On the other hand, if you had the same situation but took magic 3, you will have 1000RP/turn while the other guy only has 850. As you see, having many weak mages benefits way more from magic, since you're now significantly ahead of the other guy.
>>
>>153360004
>having 5.14 upkeep
Not sure where you got that from.

Upkeep is price/15 for nonsacred per turn, or 45/15 = 3 gold for initiates.

I even checked ingame, 36 gold per year for initiates.
>>
>>153359734
You are having a point. But having cost-effective research mages from the start won't prevent you from having proper military campaigns. And visa versa, if you are having only expensive mages, but your campaign failed, you won't have any more gold to buy proper researchers.
Sure, success decides everything. But relying on the hope that you'll gain some free gold some time later is not the reason to be wasteful now.

All Yesterdays had 30 players.

If you don't think you can muster at *least* 29ish players, don't make an Archaea game. The map was not designed for 19 players (it was either designed for 29 or 30, depending on your view of Therados).

>>
>>153360569
You get the exact same result using upkeep per year.

Initiate upkeep per year: 36
Initiate RP per year (in drain 1): 6*12 = 72

Upkeep cost to get 100 RP: 100/72*36 = 50 gold
>>
>>153359005
>in terms of upkeep only, please note
That is cruitical point here. The upkeep is not only thing which matters. The cost itself is matters much more.
With every lost RP of Witch Hunter due to Drain scale the cost-effectivness of his research drastically falling. See: In the Drain 3 Witch Hunter has 8 RP, which costs 23,12 per RP immediately and 9,75 per RP in the upkeep. And for an Initiate similar numbers would be 11,25 and 9 in the upkeep per 1 RP.
So, in the Drain 3 only upkeep is the same (and only due to Witch Hunters being sacreds), but the cost of each RP is twice as big. So Initiates here a lot better.
>>
>>153360483

>tfw we'll probably get at least a few AI/Stalers b y year 2

>>153361360
The map plays well enough without Therados, as it was originally designed before the nation existed, and they were sort of just shoved into the Med. (which can be seen in the fact that there are overlapping cap circles involved). And the removal of Therados grants the other UW nations as much accessible waters as R'lyeh has access to during expansion.
All the other nations are rather fucking important, though unless Mictlan prepares his anus, he's gonna die year 1.
>>
>>153360072
That's a demagogy.
If I have 100 7RP mages, I won't have 50 good mages in their stead. And 7RP it's 1 magic path, and 14 RP (like in your example) it's 4,5 magic paths per mage. And you are assuming that 2 weak mages costs as much as 1 exteremly powerful?
Don't bullshit me.
In my experience if I can efford 100 1 path mages, for the same money I can afford no more than 35 3-4 path mages.

And no go and do yor math about Drain 3.
100 7RP will give you 400 RP/turn and 35 12RP mages will give you 315 RP/turn.

It was you who changed the numbers. Previously we was arguing about Initiate vs Which Hunter.

If it's 100 7RP Initiates they costs 4500 gold. For 4500 pounds you can afford 24,32 Which Hunters (185 gold per mage) with 11 RP per mage.
Now we are in the Drain 3. Do the math.

Now, I am smarter.

>>
>>153361317
>but the cost of each RP is twice as big
In magic 3 the initial cost per RP for initiates is three times as much as witch hunters.

Initiates remain better than witch hunters even in drain 3, but the gap between the two is smaller.

Therefore, drain hurts initiates (low-research mages) more than it does witch hunters (high research mages).
>>
>>153362594
Which age?

>>
>>153362426
Again, missing the point. I wasn't talking about Initiates vs Witch Hunters, I was using a general abstraction to show why Drain is much, much worse on cheap mages.

And your example is deliberately disingenuous anyway. Someone who uses Witch Hunters won't have only 24 in the time it takes to get 100 Initiates. Depending on scales, he'll more likely have 100 of them as well, especially since upkeep is less of an issue. And he'll have 100% more RP/turn then the guy using Initiates. Even if he only has half that much (which means he is paying way less upkeep than the Initiate guy, and thus can go on buying more for longer), he still breaks even.

You're just grasping at straws because you're afraid of admitting you're wrong about Drain.

The options are:
C'tis/Machaka (Africa)
Pan/Ulm/Marverni/Arco (Europe)
Caelum/TC (Asia)
Oceania/Pelagia/Therados (UW)

Historically, in both Der Gotter and AY, TC was pathetic. Arco and Marverni effectively *won* mainland Europe both times. C'tis has never been relevant. Machaka grew sort of big both times, before being gangbanged in both games. UW has much more room to expand in general, and with the exception of Atlantis who is always eaten by R'lyeh, does well.
Pan and Ulm tend to remain small, until being eaten by Arco/Sauro/Marverni (in both games now, likely). Caelum did horribly in AY, but is doing well in Der Gotter.

fatigue spells, summons, cluod of fire/poison.reinvig items on mages.

your goal is to have your summons sit in the chokepoints. you can try to have a small share of your meele units walk on the chokepoints slowing the enemy army so they don't get in and you have time to summon.some kind of defensive thugs can be good for that too, be careful that they should be geared to not die to your or enemy mages, fortunately you can buff them with your mages too.

beware fliers and ethereal for they an pass through walls.
keep a good share of your units guarding mages so your army won't get hp routed until all your summons will be dead.

casting aoe evocations, stuff that make the ground catch on fire, clouds, fatigue spells are really effective especially if your summons are immune to them or you are close enoguh to be precise.

I'm afraid that it's much worse than that.

While no formal alliance has ever existed between the nations of Pelagia and R’lyeh, our sovereign states have bonded through our shared experiences in the Atlantian Crush. They were the only ones to assist us when the abominable Living Pillars came into our waters and their heroic intervention led to our hard fought victory. Our commanders and brave soldiers could not have triumphed without them. We thus owe them (and them alone) a great debt.

In theory, this means that Pelagia’s Triton armies are obligated to help R’lyeh put every one of Oceania’s miserable amphibians to the trident.

My nation is better than that though, and thanks to our incredible foresight, a formal agreement to prevent that kind of carnage was signed between Pelagia and Oceania long ago. That’s why our armed forces have never clashed over territory and it’s why Pelagia has begrudgingly respected Oceania’s wish for neutrality. Pelagia has even provided favorable reports on Oceania’s strength and usefulness in an attempt to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

But then you went ahead and broke our joyful peace by murdering Commander Halys.

Pelagia’s commanders and mages will happily oblige your sick curiosity. You may even get to see my own growing horde of golems in action.

You can atone for your failures by immediately providing Pelagia the following:
>5000 Gold
>500 Astral Pearls

I've always assumed that indie provinces are whatever race their PD/indie def is. So some places are cavemen and other exotic stuff, but the vast majority are humans.

Seems a bit odd that the national units of a multitude of unique units would ONLY come from the cap. I just assume that there will be spread populations of your people over the world, but probably as minorities.

Okay, after a year of failed attempts my spies finally managed to sneak into Chimori's Editor-in-Chief's office and stole an unpublished article concerning the progress of the war (one can only speculate why it hasn't been published). Included was this statistic which shows Chimori's progression (income and army graphs are very similar so I won't bother posting them, they've been doubled their amount of forts during last 10 turns however).

While runaway expansion has been prevented (you can clearly see the zig-zag between the combatants as Ashia and Chimori have raided each other, raiding by Djeris and Khaer has been fully compensated by gains elsewhere), there's several things to consider that have happened during last 10 turns:

1. Chimori has effectively beaten Cirez'sis (they already went AI after having their armies beaten barely killing any bats never mind mages, and it's only a matter of time until the capital gets taken unless someone new enters the war and goes through it to strike Chimori's heartland) and more or less reduced Cynothalu to their capital which will fall as soon as Chimori truly desires. Troops freed from these theatres will soon be ready to strike.
2. 20 strong mage (A3s, some N3s) stacks have been flying around but this isn't everything they've got by a long shot. Fight against Chimori has been of 100% committal by current participants but once Chimori does decide to commit fully after reaching some endgame spells (which they will, thanks to their obnoxiously strong economy and ever more forts), they'll suddenly get a lot more strength to their armies.
3. You don't get this big and not manage to diversify. Right now bats and Thunder Strikes/Air Elementals are most of what we've seen, but Chimori is beginning to dabble in blood and without doubt has access to all kinds of strategies and tactics they haven't deployed yet.
>>
>>153379679
Anyway, there's a couple of players that are still outside this conflict. Perhaps you might interpret the graphs a tad differently, but I think it's abundantly clear the threat of Chimori hasn't disappeared and they're still poised to win if the status quo continues. However, I think the graphs also show that balance of power right now is somewhat even and since most of Chimori's forces are battling Ashia right now, they're a relatively vulnerable target to an attack on other front and an additional power entering the war would almost certainly tip the scales against Chimori.

I actually did that and had to wait a week till it worked, was on chrome though
>>
>>153382185
Well, Chimori isn't THAT bad. Their lancer is slightly better than that of Xibalba and they have dualwielders that would be better in pitched battles against light infantry than lancers are, but Chimori lacks foreign recruitment of Xibalba, which is a very big deal and arguably makes Xibalba stronger in very early rushes.

The biggest strength probably is that Chimori transitions better to midgame since A3 Thunder Strike battery is better than blood at that point (and happens to be excellent against heavy infantry that their troops are bad against).

We've discussed this before and after talking about it, I'm not convinced Chimori is completely OP (beyond the strongest vanilla nations). Too bad they had the perfect storm in terms of expansion and their first target (Amore, fielding abundant heavy infantry that would have matched up well against bats) just folded due to scripting blunder before anyone could help them.
>>
>>153373712
I think of it as similar to the Norman Conquests.
If there is no fort there you levy troops from the locals, but with a fort there you have the option of levying national troops instead, hence the nobility and professional soldiers are generally made up of your nation ruling over conquered people.

>Do you genocide the population and replace it with your own after you conquer it?

The fact that the population stays the same regardless of who owns it suggests this isn't the case.
>>
who is D_G pelagia? can you come in chat?
>>
>>153383983
Pelagia is in a war. Leave me alone Burningman.
>>
>>153383610
I think there's a solid chance to beat bats if just one of the slightly bigger factions joins the war and seeing that Chimori is occupied elsewhere, they would be making easy gains initially, just like in any other backstab scenario. Moreover, a faction attacking now would be quite likely to end up as the winner since most other nations are badly battered or small to begin with, while inaction will almost certainly result in bats winning.

This isn't a case where you can win by eating smaller neighbours faster than the current leader can. I can't see a world in which not attacking Chimori could be a potential winning move for anyone involved.
>>
>>153375129
>>153376070

When playing MA Ulm one of course has access to very cheap items, but there seems to be no good thug chassis and no death access for bane lords or wraith lords.

What are you supposed to thug out? Their knights are a bit underwhelming, but can work ok, but not good.
>>
>>153393241
MA Ulm isn't a "thug nation", you're used to play more dynamically. For example, if you get an air random or find an air mage, you craft tons of owl quills. You can always craft boosters. If you gain an access to some thug-worthy chassis (through pretender paths or otherwise), then you can equip them. But just because you have forge bonuses doesn't mean your goal is to make a bunch of thugs, crafting is useful for plenty of other things, as are the gems.
>>
>>153393241
MA Ulm wants to empower early and often, fueled by a rainbow site searcher. When a full thug kit only costs 3 gems, any commander becomes an economical thug.
>>
>>153393581
Yeah, but it feels weird to have good forging but no real thug chassis.
>>

Idea: Diplomacy bound by magical pacts.

E.g. player A and player B decide to sign an NAP, they do so with 25 pearls. If either player breaks it, that player will receive a punishment dependent on the amount of gems put into it (anything from unrest increases in his territory to a astral corruption that affects only him for x turns).
All optional of course, could still just do it without it the normal way.

if you want to run a game this way it can be cool, but it's a mess to keep track of all the agreements and enforce them, since as some point you will have to ask a player to give gems/gold to the enemy he just went to war against.
People also don't like public agreements and i don't know if you can find a workaround, you might just hope people who sign up for the game will agree to the rules.

>>
>>153400530
It's not hard. Just download them both. They're different versions, and will act as different mods.
>>
>>153400689
>>153400530
Note: There is an exception to this. If an admin downloads the working version before it is complete, it will have the same .dm file as the next release, and it will be impossible to do both at once.

Incidentally, this is the cause of at least one of the conflicts from earlier.
>>
>>153400526
Nah I was just putting it out there as a game mechanic because for some reason it crossed my mind. Won't happen though, doing it meta is impossible, and modding isn't deep enough for this kinda stuff, and I doubt Illwinter is reading this right now and going "oh shit we gotta add that".
>>
>>153393241
Summons are your thugs of choice until late game when you can get angels, essentially.
Your pretender and whatever mages you can find are very, very important. Blood is a very good path for them due to afforable empowering and good thugs/SCs.
>>
>>153400825
its kind of doable with public agreements.
>>
/domg/, what's the worst deal you've ever made in a game?
>>
>>153402039
Kinda. It would mostly be about other players punishing the dealbreaker. Would fall apart quickly though, because the publishers might break the deal themselves, leading to a chain reaction.

Basically some faggot taking a wasteland might cause a world war.
>>
>>153400925
Blood is also good because it has great items that you can spam even more than most blood nations with a bit of empowering.
1 blood slave flesh eaters are great for crippling thugs when you can afford to hand them out to a few dozen indie commanders every turn.
1 blood slave imps let you rush research.
You can also afford a gorrillion black hearts and hand them out to knights for cavalry charge assassinations once you get a blood economy going.
>>
>>153402647
Granted, you'll need a stealth item for the knights too if I'm remembering right, but it's too funny not to do.
>>
>>153402780

Numbers inside and such, but at the end of the day, going Drain3 makes research points cost 30% more gold than neutral scales when using Rephaite sages.
However if you use Emites, you are paying 50% more gold for each research point.
Going a bit more in details:
If you got a rephaite sage and a emite, both of them lasted exactly one year and they died assuming you were using drain 3.
With rephaite you are paying 2.4 gold per each research point and with the other one you are paying 3.250g.
So you save 0.85 g per research point if you get rephaites instead of Emites.
If instead of 1 of each you got enough of them to get 300 RP, it would be 720g for the rephaites and 975g for the emites.
Which means 255g less gold for the same amount of research points.

If we went Drain1 instead of Drain3 it would be the same result but less exagerated.

So as a conclusion we can see that low RP mages suffer more from Drain than high RP mages.
My grammar isn't perfect and maybe my maths aren't aswell, but i'll try to solve any doubt left.

Can you control horrors? Like, using a spell on an horror to make it serve your god.
>>
>>153412764
You can charm or enslave horrors but they will break free after 3 turns at most
>>
>>153412880
So if it works, I got 3 turns to drop it on someone else?
>>
>>153413005
The problem is that horrors dont attack when they break free, they just pop out and dissappear.

You can also wish for Doom horrors and it works. I think every turn you have like 10% chances of them dissappearing and going away.

To be perfectly honest, neither Abysia nor Arco border Sauro, and both of them are quite large in their own accord. Provided they have answers to Army of Foo, Tarts, Vampire swarms, and soon to be Seraphs, (thx to a RP lead) they should be fine.

They're just trying to kill you off before Sauro eats you, because trying to get all of Sauro's small neighbors to join forces together failed, so now Pan/Ulm/Vanheim/Agartha/and you will die 1 by 1, eaten by larger forces.

At least Vanheim has an excuse.

Also as an announcement, anyone sending me astral pearls will have them converted to Amulet of Antimagic. (takes 5 to make one) I can make ~10 per month so don't lose this opportunity.
>>
>>153412626
But this wasn't anything anyone was doubting about. It's clear cut logic. Lots of small mages benefit more from national or provincial bonuses to research like magic 3. A smaller number of bigger mages is better served by individual boosters like quills and stuff.
>>
Illfraud really should make weapon artifacts have only a 50% chance of ending up in the enemy's hands, as it stands everyone is too afraid to use them since their SC might get killed by something bullshit and they'll just end up powering the enemy.

Or do something like "the magical weapon doesn't accept a new owner until x amount of time has passed".
80% of items end up being used outside the battle and the few 20% are just cheap items that nobody will miss.
>>
>>153437831
Kelp Palisades are much stronger when they're filled with chaff shit.
But the more pertinent issue, is atm all the land nations except the Far East ones (Agartha, Caelum, Yomi) are either occupied in their own tangos, or non-adjacent to me.

If that isn't a fake image, and you actually made all those (instead of site searching your stuff with Tiamats) then there were so many more threatening things you could have done with all that. Hell, even sending the raw gems as a deathbasket to Sauro would have been more damaging.
>>
>>153438887
'tis cool, it's just half the gems I had. I'll think of a more important use for the others these next few days.

And really, sending plain gems wouldn't guarantee in any shape or way that the nation in question will hit you or pelagia. This way I can be sure that my gems will be used for UW fighting.
>>
>>153439145
The land nations trying to fight UW is literally the perfect scenario for us aquatic nations. In a game where only W magic really matters in the grand scheme, no land nation has 100s of W2/W3 mages to toss around.
And the Sauro player is skilled, and those gems in raw form would have brought him closer to using the ultimate ritual to purge all the UW nations for good.

It's called claiming all the thrones one needs to win.
>>
>>153439373
>It's called claiming all the thrones one needs to win.

Well sorry to disappoint then, but I'm a petty person. I would rather much prefer the land nations causing damage to your nations directly, instead of giving one land nations all my resources so he can conquer all land thrones and win the game without ever touching you.

>>
Is merely pretending a good meme around these threads?
>>
>>153440343
Well I'm hoping it's not gonna be "smaller nations" but the big ones wanting some more thrones. Squids got 5 thrones, Pelagia has 3, I have 2 which I'll lose to them. Even for someone with so much freespawn, defending 10 thrones should still be a bit hard.

By the way, my thrones are on land , that should make it even easier to take from their slimy, wet tentacles.

>>
>>153452467
>for every site, the chance of another is decreased?
All sites are fixed in the world when the game starts.

>Or is there a chance there is NO site?
There are provinces with no sites, yes. Use Visible Sites mod so you can get a better idea about site distribution.
>>
>>153452563

Yes I know it does. But I believe the chance to generate two sites are far lower than one. So if you still haven't found a site at a province with most paths, there might either be one more powerful there, or none. So a fairly good assumption to start deep searching there.
>>
>>153452818
The only good assumption is that there's probably more sites in #manysires provinces, and less in other ones. If you already wasted time searching that farm provinces with F/A/W/E of level 1, there's almost no reason to waste more mage turns and deepsearch it with F/A/W/E 2 or 3.

Yes obviously, if there is a 50% chance of a site appearing, then there is a 25% chance of two sites appearing, 12.5% of three, and so on. x^n basically, x being probability (0 to 1), n being site number.

>Sitesearching with your pretender
>>
>>153452467
It's the other way around. If you find sites in a province, that province is more likely to have additional sites (up to the cap of 7, IIRC).

To illustrate why, imagine you have a province with 1 random site, and a different province with 7 random sites.

Which one are you more likely to find a site on when you first search it?
>>
>>153453036
To get 50 gems per turn in year 3, obviously.
>>
>>153452312
About 80-90% of the magic sites can be found with a level 2 mage. Level 1 alone will catch about 50-60%. And the sites that require 4 or higher to be found are mostly shit.

Site searching with 3 and above is only worth it if you really want to scrape every last gem you can.

So I just try to sitesearch with as many 1-2 paths as possible, with as little investment as possible. Depends how specialized the national mages are.

This is purely for fun, but what would be the best pretender to make the ultimate powerful god?
The premise is infinite Wish Spam (so the stat values increased by it don't matter in this choice).
I can't decide between Immortal pretender (but he's undead and can't use regen in battle for that nice 10% of ALMOST INFINITE HP), Shapeshifter pretender (for double ALMOST INFINITE HP BARS) or innate-regen pretender (for stacking regen bonuses on top of that).

Say you have a province with two visible sites.

Assuming 50% per site, there's a 25% chance that it just has two sites and a .78% chance that it has seven.

Is it more likely that this province has two sites or seven?

Now it's true that if there was a province with seven sites it would be more likely to show up earlier with more sites. But that's so rare as to not really be worth the opportunity cost of not searching a province more likely to have something.

Golems are not good per se. For example, skellingtons can kill a non-regenerating golem with starshine skullcap by just hitting it on the head. It will take a lot of time, and other layers of defence (like vine shield and body ethereal) can prevent that.

Each kitted golem needs an individual approach, depending on its items. If you have D2 mages and high alt, you can spam disintegrate, and it will die eventually. If you have E mages, shatter can and will kill it (again, eventually), but you need to be really close to him, which is dangerous. Anti-thugs with smashers will kill him (remember, golems have shit defence and attack skills) if he's kitted with anti-pd items (like brands). Casting darkness will make golems almost unable to hit anything with non-AoE attacks.

If you post the golem that you want to kill, I can give some specific advice.

shit/shit?

Are Maenads really worth taking turmoil? Seems kinda suspect to me, especially if I want to blood hunt at all effectively.
>>
>>153463436
> It will take a lot of time, and other layers of defence (like vine shield and body ethereal) can prevent that.

Well a more correct term would be "reduce the chance". The golem in question who lost his head to PD in Oceania had both Astral Shield and Body Ethereal.

If you really got nothing up your sleeve you can just try your luck with some troops with a lot of moral. Or berserkers.

>>153464001

you are using the wrong chassis: Volla of the bountiful forest is the W9 chassis.
this is an example; really similar to your god, but will come up at turn 12 to research and eventually cast falling frost ( evo 5, probably you will get that turn 28 or later),, many water elementals or you could get N5 and cast mother oak with her at turn 25(?) without having to research construction first.
if you go imprisoned and only magic 2 sloth 2 and dom 5 you can afford N9W9 which is a bit weird since you only have cap-only sacreds.

keep in mind that you don't need high dom due to cheap temples, cold scales are somewhat cheap to tank( slightly less than 4% income each but give more money in your first summer when you are buying sacreds to expand).

you are definitely money starved so optimizing for income is not bad, even if temperature scales are, in my opinion, 120 free points everyone should grab.

the big alternative is going Order 3, with minor misfortune and obvious consequences. maenads would never come to you ( unless you menage to acquire turmoil scales in one of your provinces), but you will have money to research faster and buy revelers.

Maenads are nice. They act as chaff, they bog down forts so as to make them unassailable and in principle, if you throw enough them at the opponent, they can beat armies despite being free.

However, Pangaea is very starved for gold and T3 gives you maenads in such enormous numbers you'll struggle to deploy them (having to summon Sleepers to lead them, and even then they'll be in unmanageable blobs that fill the entire battlefield and prevent Revelers/Centaurs from closing in unless you deploy them at the back in which case they're not really doing anything).

As far as I see it, T3 is a trap. The question is between O0 and O3 and both are good. Neutral order scales will give you maenads in abundance, more than enough to fill the strategical and tactical niches they are useful for, while offering better economy. The benefits of O3 are obvious. I suppose something in between could also work (if I recall correctly, O1 and O2 will still yield you some maenads, enough to turn prevent palisades from being instantly captured and such like, but not enough to throw hundreds of them at the opponent, while unlocking some nice gold events if you can also afford luck).

that is even better since it's in alteration. i was looking through the inspector if the vanilla game had good W scaling spells in alteration but i didn't factor in based summod.

knowing that i would go W9 dormant everytime on pangea with summod.
since revelers are undisciplined now i feel like both order and turmoil are valid choices.
the amount of maenads you can put on an enemy fort at turn 20 is ridicolous.
>>
>>153466805
Remember smallfish, in which the 3 UW nations fought bitterly over 12 provinces whilst everyone else was eaten by Ermor.
>>
>>153466607
you definitely struggle to buff them all or to not hinder your sacreds if you bring all of them, but having the leadership to bring them into the battlefield should't be a problem.
being able to swarm every enemy province with upkeep free womens that would require a a small army or a thug to clear is pretty good.
i don't think it's a trap at all.

So what I'm gathering is that the best way to kill golems is to bash their skulls in or use save or die spells. Undead thugs with smashers, good troops with growing fury and resists, soul slay and disintegrate, air and maybe fire eles if they don't have the right resists. Hell, maybe some perfect morale/magic weapon summons like giant manti. Anything else?

I haven't tested it out myself, but this in theory should be an incredibly cheap and effective anti-golem weapon. Especially on another golem.

Bludgeoning damage - check.
Magical damage to pass ethereal - check.
4 whooping attacks meaning 4 times the chance to bash their head - check.

Only downside is you're gonna need to be melee for it.

As someone who loves playing Pangaea and knows their in's in outs pretty well here is a pretender I would choose.

Order Scales : two choices - Turmoil 1 or Order 3, Order 3 allows you to deploy more troops/revelers and is awesome, turmoil gives you access to more than enough maenads. I think revelers are worth forgoing maenads.e

Sloth 3 - your guys wear furs, hoplites are a trap

heat/cold - maximizing income, I can see taking more cold to cast grip of winter with your pretender.

Growth 3 - mo money
luck/magic - you can go misf2/mag2 , but I personally rather not deal with the bad events.

Why dormant?
>You're playing with summod, once you get alt-4 you give your guys quickness in AoE9. +3att/+3def. double attacks.W9 on steroids. The stats from your bless stack, so +7 defence on your centaurs means that they cannot be killed in melee. Revelers become even better.

Research goals: Alteration 4 is a must- alteration 5 after that. Notable spells: protection, quickness, SWARM, wooden warriors.

Strategy - up to turn 24ish you can kill people by just sending tons of centaurs with revelers at them. You want to kill someone fast - go for someone with shit sacreds/scales/playing a weak nation. Later on remember to use Dryads as assasins - give them N gems and set to cast Swarm - this will kill anything that's not a SC very regularly. Best case scenario is to assasinate key mages before an important battle. Raid party = centaur mage blessing 5 w9 centaurs, or a centaur with 10 revelers spamming protection.

once you have an army with mage support or a province with 50 PD or a good thug it's over. you can already see how you'll win. but it's slow because the enemy keeps " freespawning" 250 infantry everywhere and conquer your stuff back until you can deploy enough of the good stuff that destroys their indie stacks.

They give you some troops and mages. It´s not a bad group, though generally there´s better things to do with the gems.

Thing is, those spells can open you new magic paths that you didn´t have before. So if you need the paths the "hidden" mages could have, then it´s quite worth it.
>>
>>153484945
You cast it for the magic diversity from the mages, pretty much.
The armies are generally alright but kinda underwhelming for the price. Very solid statline for non-ethereal undead. Nice for how fast you get it, though. Hidden in Snow's is pretty much the best due to the warriors getting magic weapons, though theoretically you could make use of Hidden in Sand's sacred king and mages.
Cast them in a province with high magic scales for the most mages if you can.

He was obvious anyway, blatant aggressive statements in the thread are a dead give-away.

How do NEETs make money?

I recently qualified for foodstamps, but only after working for three months this year, and foodstamps will feed me but aren't enough for housing.

Ok if all the ponds are connected to the main Ocean RIP any hopes land nations had of getting H3's. But the sacrifice is worth it in the name of memes.

Reminder to use the newly updated 2.6 mapfile, which fixes added connections.

There are two diametrical ways to play MA Ermor: heavy bless and rainbow. With heavy bless you go imprisoned, with rainbow you go awake. There are some inbetween shit too, like dormant N9X9 or something.

>>153490258
And how important are prophets to Ermor early game?
>>
>>153490380
For bless strat: crucial. You can go and take a shitton of provinces with a prophet and 10 knights.

For rainbow, not that important. HOWEVER, as it turns out, power of the sepulcher makes skelespam three times as deadly, so making archbishop a prophet will be useful.

Where is the new thread, faggots.

the number of land( or water if you are UW) provinces of the map divided by the number of land ( or water) players -2.

this is usually around 12-14.
at turn 13 the expansion should be over. the only unconquered provinces should be almost all thrones, isolated water provinces, 30 heavy cavs or 60 undeads provinces, broken provinces like the ones with 40 stone monstras, provinces you have completely surrounded to take safely later.
and some of these should be conquered during year 2.

sitesearch the province, it often has other air sites.

all units visting it should be on retreat and you can only build a fort with 25 PD or army guarding it.
it has a good chance of being attacked by phantasmal warriors and you either invest in a lot of PD ( 25? i don't know, check the inspector for exactly what kind of battles it triggers and PD type) or just accept you'll lose it every 15 turns and you'll need a small army to reconquer it.
