if you make a modification to the base scripts, don't save them directly to that file.

copy the functions you intend to replace in your own plugin.js, and include it as one of the lowest plugins in the plugin list.

1. other plugins might make changes to those same functions, and you need to make sure yours aren't being replaced

2. rpg maker mv updates often, and with those updates comes updates to the base scripts as well. you'll lose your modifications when updating and won't remember why.

Since you're going to use your own .js to avoid the potential problems, you will definitely be replacing the function.

If it were the right type of function, there's a technique, "aliasing" a function, that allows multiple scripters to touch a function lewd without stepping on each other's toes. With the way makeSaveContents() is written, it won't be usable here. You'll have to just replace it the normal way.

Yeah, plugins can be just that. There are things that "real" scripters do to make them more user friendly and/or make them more compatible with more projects. Those things aren't necessary, though, particularly because it's specifically for your own project.

I'm not that guy but consider studying other pixel art. That, and learn colour theory. You're going to need to figure out hue-shifting to really step up to the next level.

I said this poorly. I mean just overall there is a lack of contrast. This is a painting trick I learned. Squint your eyes. If the values mesh together, they are not far enough apart to be considered different values. Right now the entire thing looks muddy because there is not large enough changes in value.

Just better consider the light source and how it would act on the form. This is just essentially the fundamentals of painting so it will take time to get perfect at it. They aren't offensive right now so just remember it can be better for the most part.

Just remember, all colors have a "tempature." Grays should always be warm or cool. Then other colors should move towards gray to get colors "relative" to that. For example, gray on a warm gray would appear more blue.

This is all painting stuff but directly applies to colors in pixel art. I have never seen pixel art tutorials talk about that and they just stress "hue variation," but in reality they are talking about this.

Just remember if you have cool light, warm shadows, and cool light makes warm shadows. So if you have a orange light, you would have more blue shadows. This is a property of how your eyes see things in reality. If you have a white room and look at everything during sunrise, even though you know your room is white the actual local color will be orange, and in the shadows it will be blue.

For more on shit like this I recommend James Gurney color and light.

All of this is extremely helpful and I have saved it in a text file for review in the morning. The biggest issue I was being limited to the 24x24 square. I can't change the sprite size without a pretty massive overhaul at this point, unfortunately. I'll take what you said and see how I can do tomorrow.

In essence.

Pic related shows an extreme version of what >>153244650 was talking about.
Highlights are in orange and shadows are in (complementary) blue. This is a staple technique in painting, though it is generally much more subtle, and only the time of day in the painting allows for it to be so intense.

But experiment. Try shading reds with purples, etc.

I believe both have different design requirements.

Hentai requires to be designed with the idea that the player will be masturbating to the game at some point, so scenes need some build up to create desire and turn it into a fantasy, and their climax should be entertaining enough for 5-15 minutes of content. Controls of pacing, some fetishy customization and galleries would be heavily advised.

Ecchi is more like a tone. Something you watch/do when you are feeling like indulging in perverted thoughts, but not really masturbating. Some people might fap to it, but probably not the majority of the players. A lot of anime that does ecchi uses it to sell dakimakura and dolls, since the fans will be fapping to those. Ecchi is also usually a detriment to things like tension and anxiety, so you have to be careful regarding where you place it.

In VX Ace, all tiles placed in sets A1-A5 are either X or O. Tiles in sets B-E can be starred, but those sets generally are used for scenery and not for walls. If you did use B-E, you'd have to have a separate wall tile for passing behind (blue) and for not passing at all (red), to simulate a real wall.

It can be done, but it'd be annoying and take up a lot of tile sets.

When you scale, you should have an "interpolation" option. You want the "none" option. It might also be called "nearest neighbor."

Anon that made the battle demo here, was in the middle of designing the boss for the next demo before realising that it actually would be so much better if there were more fighting game things like startup. To have startup though, I need hitstun as well, and I'm not sure how to go about doing hitstun in a manner that doesn't make it a ridiculously overpowered mechanic.

While it's quite easy to solve the problem if players timing attacks so they always catch enemies in hitstun, the problem is how do I prevent players from stunlocking enemies? I'm currently thinking of hitstun degradation ala Marvel 3 and other anime fighters but I'm not sure how to implement it, especially if I want enemies to have certain amounts of degradation.

If you're using MV, look into Yanfly's Action Sequences, you can have it so the skill applies state ID's in the Notetag of the skill, guaranteeing that they are applied in correct order. You can also do a whole bunch of shit in general, so I would greatly recommend.

I need to make it so that a state is applied 100% of the time as long as the chance to add the state is higher than the state rate. Formula means that as long as the answer is 1.0 or higher, the state is guaranteed to apply, so I'm looking to make sure that if...

A few months ago I managed to change something in the js files (either core or windows) that made it so that the battle screen in-game shows five party members instead of the default four. It is cool that you have some kind of moat, but your town should probably continue a little outside the moat so the player doesn't see the black area just outside. But I guess that is more of a personal taste of mine.

Also, I think you should probably put more vegetables and fences, as well as some farming area outside the moat. But that is a personal taste.

Grown-up is still too broad a term. Most grown-up movies are still mostly on escapism. Action heroes like James Bond, John McClane and Kyle Reese are all power fantasies found in movies with an adult market, what you have in their movies that separates them from children movies, other than amounts of sex, drugs and violence, are themes not usually found in kids movies. Fears regarding terrorism, politics, government corruption, technology, etc. are things children don't usually care about, but adults do. Similarly, you do have mystery stories for kids. Personally, I believe the age of the target market influences mostly two aspects:
The elements used to captivate the audience and make them like the character and the quest.
The complexity regarding how deep and wide you can delve.

RPGs for adults, huh? The main one that comes to mind for me is Trails in the Sky FC. While it's still pretty fantastical, it's also very down to earth, and it ultimately ends up having a pretty political story (with a fair bit of magic etc mixed in). The sequel made it way more tropey and anime, though it's still good.

But there is a young-love plot thread through whole thing that both age groups are going to be disinterested in for different reasons.

Older readers can see where it's going a mile away, and younger readers just want to get back to the cooler fictional parts.

Raising relationships with party members usually help with learning bonus skills either for the main character or the party member.

Certain secondary NPCs can give certain items/upgrades for raising their relationship.

Dark border or light border?

Fairies in the setting are partly aethereal and partly material. They are born from laughter-influenced aether. The purple thing in the middle of her chest is her heart and it is supposed to glow a bit. The other purple areas are supposed to glow as well.

Her wings and color have 16 different shapes total depending on her current class, but they are all centered around red (from orange-brown to purplish pink)

Depends on the game. If it's a serious, story-heavy game, then you probably want a strong protag. My advice would be to think of games that have silent protags and think about whether they would gain anything from having a more defined personality. And, conversely, look at games with defined protags and imagine them without defined personalties.
For example, Grandia is a character driven game and without Justin as a central character, it would fall apart. The game revolves around him, since it's a coming of age story.
Tales of the Abyss is all about Luke's progression into taking responsibility for everything going on around him, instead of being a spoilt brat.
Final Fantasy Tactics would probably work fine with a silent protag. Ramza is pretty much your eyes into the world, and since the story is more plot and world driven, the character development comes second.
Would Zelda gain anything from giving Link a more defined personality and voice? Not really, because he isn't the focus of the game. All the colorful characters and locales around him are.

But don't get me wrong, a silent or personality-deficient character can still have a back story and relationships with other characters. For example, Adol Christin from Ys doesn't say a word for the vast majority of the series, but we still know his motivations and personality. He has friends who interact with him. Even a character like Samus has a personality and backstory, as bare as it is.
I personally like characters like that. Just enough personality to make them not a statue, but not so much that you can't project yourself onto them.

Speak for yourself. But I know what you mean. The "teenagers saving the world" plot grew pretty boring for me once.... well, I wasn't a teenager. It's refreshing to see adult characters. But at the same time, I like grand adventures and magic and all that. I want to see an imaginative world full of fun characters. I like mature themes (Nier is one of my favorite games, after all) but I don't think a game has to be realistic and gritty to appeal to adults. A lot of kid's media has more subtly towards serious themes than a lot of adult stuff does. At least in my opinion, some "mature" media almost feels like it's talking down to the viewer, while kid's media (when it isn't being super patronizing) seems more comfortable with handling difficult themes. Sure, they have to do it in a child friendly way (no excessive gore and curse words, for example) but a lot of films and books handle tough themes like loss and death. Don Bluth was good at this: he's quoted saying something like, "If there's a happy ending, kids can handle anything". I think any writer could learn something from that. A respect for the viewer and a grasp of subtly.

It's overused, but really only in WRPGs. I mean, you have some earlier games like Ys (and occasionally Valis???) with a sword n board protag, but most JRPGs have just a sword without a shield or some sort of special snowflake weapon. Or they can equip shields, but you never see it.
As a minor enthusiast in older arms and armor, I like sword and shield characters. It's a very versatile setup, along with spear/shield. If you were travelling and had no clue what you were going to be up against, that's the setup I would go with.

I would say to force yourself to get started on something, even if it isn't fun. Once you're in the middle of a project, it's a lot easier (and fun) to keep going.

If you want to make something out of your ideas, don't wallow in self pity or feel guilty for "just making games". It's your spare time, so do what you want to do with it. If you're feeling lethargic or depressed, having something productive to do every day helps a lot. Creating stuff makes me feel good and satisfied, but it's also a lot of fun. Sometimes it's difficult and I have to power through something I find boring (testing, game balance, etc) but I find game dev to be a very satisfying hobby.

That really sucks. Not having a persistent routine is stressful (at least, for me it is). My advice is the same as before though: when you have half an hour, open up the editor and do SOMETHING no matter how small. It takes some discipline, there's no way to get around that, but if you can get into the habit of booting up rpgm whenever you turn on the computer to mess around, you'll find it easier to keep making progress.
It's all about habit and routine with a dash of discipline.

It looks like you've got inconsistent plane distortion.

On the "front" plane, the screw heads are circles but the pipe structures are oval.

On the "Top" plane, the yellow bolts and the tesla coil ring things have different distortion.

I suspect you didn't want the tesla coil rings to overlap because they're all the same color. Just give the lower rings a darker value for depth and maybe a highlighted edge for pop.
Imo, the pipes structures going into the wall should be circular like the screws. You only see the "front" distorted for depth in "military" oblique projections. I'm think you're going for "cabinet", where only the tops are shortened (whether you shorten it by 1/2 or 3/4, it needs to be constant across everything)
"Cavalier" has no distortion the top is the same as the front.
We cheat with spheres because in projections they would be elongated. The trick is to know where the top is and to shade them properly.

I'll have to remake it later, but what do you think about this concept NPC race? I call them Morrigan, but they are closer to Banshee and are creatures born mainly from acceptance of death.

They are bald and have long necks because I want them to resemble vultures a little.

At this resolution it looks like she is smiling, but that is actually a tattoo below her mouth. All Morrigan have different tattoos.

The wings are supposed to surround the body twice and form the dress. Not sure what else she should wear besides the wings, though.

The hands are meant to be parrot-like as an excuse to associate the cross symbol with death in the setting.

I'm working on a detective game and naturally interrogations are a big part of this genre.
While I can make normal dialogues with (potential) witnesses an interrogation of a suspect needs to be different. It needs to be harder with choices what to present and maybe find lies and contradictions and whatnot.
AA is pretty much "use the right evidence at the right time" and LA Noir is using a strange forced 4 dialogue option approach which was not always good. >[x] doubt and so on.
I kinda need to make a mix between these I think.

Quick! Save us from page 10! What are you working on right now?

I played Ys1 for the first time yesterday and, while it took a bit of getting used to, I grew pretty fond of the Bump System™ so I'm trying to recreate something like it in MV. But also make it fun to play, so I'm setting up custom collisions and stuff. I want something fast paced and elegant, so not just slapping on a touch event and calling it a day.

I have my plot for the last 75% or so of the game completely figured out, set in stone, completely perfect.

...But the first 25% is causing me issues...

I just don't know how to introduce the world and characters, and make a convincing hook to grab the player at the very start. Once the plot starts moving, things should be fine, but I just... can't... fucking... come up with anything to really GRAB the player at the start...

I need a good reason for the journey to begin, and I mean, I have something written down, but I think it's just not enough. I think people will start the game and quickly get bored of it, and never make it to the point where shit starts to actually happen...

I've been playing around with the idea of maybe resurrecting my One Screen RPG game (again). I was thinking of going with something like this.

Instead of having 3 party members, you'd only have 1, but I'd use Yanfly's Free Turn Battle System, so you get to take multiple actions per turn.

I think I'm really on to something here. I might be able to work with this and finally make some progress on it...

1. The only one I've played is Tomb of Friends,(>>153966429) which was pretty neat

2. The only thing I ever "finished" was a terrible RPG Maker 2000 game called "Izlar: The World Unseen" back around 2005-ish. Pic related. I sold it to at least 2 people at summer camp for $5 on CD

3. I haven't kept up with recent stuff, but "A Blurred Line" and "The Way" were both pretty cool back in the RPG RPG Revolution days.

4. I'm only comfortable using either stuff I make myself or the RTP. I won't even commission assets. That's just me though.

5. I'm working on a project currently code-named "Trample Line Riddles." The name doesn't really mean anything. It's your basic "collect the magical orbs" plot with a focus on character development.

A long time ago I was subscribed to PSM, a Playstation magazine, I still remember the article they wrote about subverting RPG tropes and other things.
Keep in mind this was early ps2 days. So there was stuff like seamless battle transitions, which hadn't been done outside of the Chrono Trigger, let alone a 3D game.

They had ideas that seemed pretty novel at the time. The heroine being a Punk Metal spellcaster, opposed to the sweet and innocent flowery princesses.

The big silent guy, and the bubbly-cheerful girl are there, but with twists to justify their archetypes.

The big guy is what happens when you abuse strength potions. He's dead inside, but can still follow orders.

The girl is a combat medic, unlike healers in other games her magic doesn't work from afar. She has to dig her hands into wounds to mend flesh. Her upbeat attitude is due the symbol on her bandanna, that keeps her motivated and happy. 'Cause well, PTSD is a thing and paramedics see a lot of shit.

I honestly forgot what the deal with the other characters were about. Main dude needs a cool sword, and what's a dark fantasy without a murder and assassins.

Generally the idea of highly stressed/becoming insane party members intrigues me but I guess it's hard to write these well. Normally they just have a kink and are lolsorandom.

It seems I've run into a problem. Can anyone explain what is causing this crash?

It happens when I try and start a battle with this script enabled.

Removing the script stops the crash, but I need it, or something like it, to have the single character's face graphic and HP/MP/TP bars take up the whole window.

If I can't manage to get this one to work, can anyone recommend me a better battle HUD for single-character parties?

If you're afraid of conflicts and want to make sure you can check and make corrections without having to do some soul searching to find the line, make a new script for Window_Base, and copy that def thing over to it, then comment the line out.

Nah, that doesn't fix it.
I did however find a roundabout way to fix the problem. The sprite view system allows you to change your sprite when afflicted with a given state. So I went in and changed the color of the sprite to see if it would work, and it does.

But this means that you won't be able to be afflicted with more than 1 state at a time because it'll only show one sprite color at once...

Does anyone know of any other scripts that I can use as a HUD that may not have this problem?

Yes. Pretty much everything takes place in that one room. The exception being that when you beat a boss, you have a flashback sequence. Part of the goal of the game is finding out how and why you became locked in the room in the first place.

And yeah, I know what you mean, but I'm no scripter, so I have no idea HOW to fix it.

As someone who came into starting a RPG Maker project without any prior experience in game development or digital art, I immediately went down the route of trying to make my own assets. It's a huge distraction to even just create good enough placeholders while trying to learn scripting, map making, and everything else.
At the same time, it does help with making it feel like it's actually your project,

As long as you're still trying to figure things out on your own without posting the results anywhere, you can just do whatever you please, even use the standard assets.
I think it's the general consensus, however, that even the crappiest self-made assets will help you a lot more with getting people interested in your game and building a fan base. A lot of people are apparently quick to lose any interest when they see standard assets as they reek of shovelware, basically.

Other people's assets will give you a more professional, polished look more quickly, but I guess there's also a risk of it being something people have seen before, many times even, and losing interest because of it if nothing else catches their eye.

So, whatever you're willing to invest time in. Assets can always be changed down the road, so it really depends on what you're trying to do with it.

Two immediately come to mind.

I played one that got posted on a hypnosis fetish forum a couple years ago. The creator explained that it would be a game where your character would be hypnotized to do lewd things (this is fetish fuel for weirdos like us).

However, immediately after booting the game up, I was introduced to a giant square room of nothing with a door at the end. I went through the door, and was drawn into a scene where I lost control of my character. They proceeded to walk into a wall, get stuck and the game just sat there, unable to progress because they fucked up the move route.

The other game was one where... I think I found it on GameFAQs or Reddit? But it was supposed to be a demo for a generic JRPG. It was done in VX Ace and used the horrid character generator faces.

You start in jail, and you manage to pick the lock and escape. You then pick the locks of all the other prisoners and they join your party.

Nobody has any equipment, and the only skills anyone had was 2 of them having healing spells. So you walk out the prison door, and end up in a dungeon generator room. The encounter rate was stupidly high and it took like 3 rounds of your dudes just mashing attack to kill a single basic enemy, and most encounters had 2 or 3 enemies.

Then, as I'm walking around, I pass through an ordinary-looking hallway and a prison guard or whatever walks up to me from offscreen and is like "Stop right there, criminal scum!" and fights me.

My fighters were maybe knocking off 2% of his health per round (he was using Yanfly's enemy HP bars script) and my mages literally did zero damage to him. I healed until I ran out of MP, but I figured that it must be an unwinnable fight, so I just went ahead and let him kill me.

Game over. Told dev he sucked at game design.
