Just what is the point of the lancer class in this game?

Sabers has a good star weight; skills, ATK and HP are mostly balanced in offense and defense.
Archers are a crit receiver that does a better crit damage with Independent action, many has dodge, they're like sabers but weaker in offense yet can make more stars.
Riders are the best crit receiver with the highest star weight, arts crits fill their NP gauge and buster crits does a good damage.
Casters are mostly a support type.
Assassins are star generators with some having instant death skill/NP.
Berserkers are glass cannons.
Rulers are tankers.
Avengers are anti-ruler.

Lancers mainly has 2 quicks but make less stars than Assassins, most of them can't fill their BP gauge fast enough to Spam NP, archers are probably better, their Riding is kinda wasted because of their low star weight, riders are better, their damage is lower than berserkers.

Are they some kind of Rider-Assassin-Berserker hybrid?

I'd say they're pretty much a combination of Saber and Archer, some have neat evasion and stargen skills. Plus they're the one class that has a half of ST (Cu, Setanta, Fionn, Deermund, Sca, Bryn) and AOE (Hector, ROMA, Alter Artoria, Karna, etc).

I don't know about you but Brynhild with a AQQC generates like 45% of NP Gauge, even BQQC makes up a 25% or 40% tops with crits.

Extra's gameplay is mightily annoying. It doesn't play like a RPG, instead every turn is six rounds of rock-paper-scissors. All "strategy" is learning what patterns of rock-paper-scissors are used by whatever enemy you're facing.

I'd argue he does need it, at least Gilgamesh had extra damage against almost every Servant. Karna's extra damage is exactly the same, 150%, and it doesn't trigger on everything. Maybe the Lancer modifier and his higher ATK make up for it, but it really doesn't feel like it.

Most of them are not useful because their stats are too weak. Remember that you use them instead of some 5* CE, so you need to compare them.

Useful ones are usually ones that are put on support, such as Waver's or Atalanta's, although even they are usually worse than 2030.

The entire concept goes to waste because instead of focusing on the two teams battling to the death, a random homunculus steals the spotlight, thereby taking it away from several far more interesting characters. Higashide basically tried to redo the Fate route of Stay Night, but with Sieg and Jeanne, who kind of falls in love with him out of the blue. Sieg is basically a black hole who drags the entire story around himself, getting himself saved and being given powerups at the expense of several better characters. Take Shirou's plot armor from Fate and then crank it up to 11. He's just a terribly boring character on top of it.

Apo does some things right, but it doesn't work with those few things enough, and the whole thing is soured by the trio of Sieg, Jeanne, and Astolfo. especially Sieg moreso than anything else though.
