The biggest thing is that you need to have the proper amount of Agony Resistance for whatever tier you're going to do. If you're aiming for T4 fractals (which you should, eventually), then that means you want to get 150 AR, which means a full set of ascended armor/weapons/trinkets. Aside from that fractals are relatively short and have easy to understand mechanics. If you're not sure what the mechanics are, you can always ask or look em up.
Most randoms will do fractals at daily reset. You can use the in-game group tool to find ads in the fractals tab, and look for people doing dailies, or the specific daily fractal scales (which you can check in achievement tab)

Depends the mode, in PVE, only the bulwark and medic gyros are somewhat useful.
In PVP, function, stealth, bulwark and purge gyros are good, medic is alright too.
So you're never really playing an all gyros scrapper except in WvW, you can swap your last slot for blast gyro and have moderate fun in zerg fight throwing all your gyros at once and watching them deal tons of damage with final salvo.

I recently came back from a 2 year hiatus and am disappointed with the PvP
I used to play a Guardian that focused on boons, shouts and healing in sPvP and did very well for myself and my team. I could bunker myself quite well vs other players.
However, I tried the same build and other variations of it only to get constantly curbstomped, snared, pinned down and dropped in a heartbeat. What the fuck changed so much that I'm getting destroyed this fast?
I also dont have the expansion, but that shouldn't affect sPvP, right? Isn't that just for PvE mostly and a couple extra specs? The stats should be the same.

Yes, I am technically, but I haven't RP'ed with anyone in the guild. There are a few, but they typically take their RP elsewhere. You would honestly be much better off getting into an RP guild. TCRP is a decent start but very hardly optimal. Things like the Seraph guard or Inquest units are the kind you want for more organized and consistent RP that isn't just bar diving.

You can roof hop or glide into the uninstanced area of the Salma district in Divinity's Reach for a bar hotspot. Outside of that, it's kind of spotty. Reach in general is a hotspot, though. You also have to be in the right zone instance so it's easier to just join an RP megaguild like TCRP or DN for free taxis.
