I am a bit obsessed with skill in games.
And I came to a conclusion that, to have a truly competitive game, you cannot have a skillcap. You can execute the hardest combo? Great, but now you've hit a skillcap - the only thing left to train is strategies and pressure management. To create a competitive GAME mechanic, you must allow the player to push it indefinitely - with no "objectively best" point.

That's why I invented Overchaining. In any fighting game, every combo (involving juggles or stuns) leaves frames for the opposing player to recover. Well, not in Overchaining. Overchaining allows for transitioning from one combo to the other, while maintaining a stun on the enemy - but there's a catch. Once you begin Overchaining, each attack becomes both faster and requires a more precise input, the damage also starts falling (so you can Overchain for a very long time, without the enemy dying).

That's an infinite mechanic, you can push yourself however far you want to. You can never "solve" it. What do you think?

Pressure in Street Fighter is quite one dimensional and many options simply resets the situation with little to no advantage, while say in Guilty Gear even simple things can lead to a combo and corner carry at the same time.

I think the people behind the games kind of resembles their final gameplay aspects.

SFIV had Seth Killian behind it, which is a very smart person and also a good idea-installer. He's very analytic and knows how to balance a fighting game.

SFV has Combofiend. Despite being relatively important in the US FGC, he's a literally who compared to Seth Killian. His work with SFV could be seen as the one of a "modder" rather than a designer. In fact, he helped balancing USFIV too, which had an official "crazy" version of SFIV named Omega SFIV, which is similar to those crazy PC mods that alters the gameplay like SF Remix. He does a relatively good job at "translating" what the audience wants for a new SF game, but at the same time it lacks of the polish an actual designer could add to the game. That's why there is some wonky shit like lack of hurtboxes on specific jump-ins or some hitboxes being stubbier than expected. USFIV had similar issues too with its "new" characters.
