Why is Kanami so useless in the later games anyway? In 01 she was incredibly powerful, a master ninja, striking fear into the hearts of Lia's enemies. She flawlessly played the part of an innocent girl, deceiving even the great hero Rance. I remember carefully working out a strategy to beat her, counting my every shield cooldown turn, barely scraping through after much effort and retries and preparation.

Yet in every other game she's like one of the weakest pleb characters I send out to wipe random mobs so as to not waste movement points of the actually useful characters.

Let's be real

Lia wants Rance for herself but she knows that's not ever going to happen as he's not satisfied with just 1 person, so her compromise was to be Rance's favorite. Problem is that Sill is Rance's uncontested (at that moment) favorite at the time, so she tried to get rid of Sill and we all know how that turned out. On top of that Rance didn't like to be around of too long because she was too clingy and comments about marriage bothers him but she really couldn't help it as she was a teenager.

Eventually she grew up and decided to be smart about it, her goal changed to be one of Rance's favorites and most likely with Magic coming into the picture she wants to hold the position of #1 Princess/Queen. Everything goes splendidly in Quest and Rance is actively spending time with her but then Reset happens. Lia's goal after seeing Reset and Rance's reaction to Reset is to aim to get pregnant herself, which she pulled off without a hitch thanks to Sill being per-occupied. So now not only is she his #1 Princess/Queen but she also is pregnant with his child, the only threat left is Sheila so let's keep Rance and Sheila apart as long as possible and hope they don't hit it off when he goes to Helman

Then IX happens and unlike Magic who isn't a threat whatsoever Sheila is a direct threat because she's basically a Princess version of Sill on top of Kanami betraying you. Lia's obviously not that happy but apparently Rance calmed her down somehow

Kanami really didn't need to be too strong while working for Lia because most of her work was either kidnapping or assassinating people against Lia.

Kanami is very strong for a human and in the first 2 games the bosses and such are within the range of normal humans. Things change in 03 when you start fighting opponents that are not only above Kanami's powerlevel but if they aren't they are generally covered in armor instead. That trend stays throughout the series because of escalating enemies, doesn't help that Kanami's training wasn't finished and her levels keep going back to 27 so she doesn't really grow stronger as a ninja until Suzume comes along.

They are going to make at least some of the women demon go full suffering, it's a matter of which ones they'll choose. Satella is the safest as she has prior experience with Rance and is most likely will be the reason he heads there in the first place. Hawzel, Saizel, Silky and Hornet are the ones who are under threat, 1 of them is going to Medusa and another to Kaybliss. Hawzel has the highest chance of getting picked as a reference to KR as well as being a plot point they can use to bring Saizel on to the team, The choice between Silky and Hornet is up in the air though.

Some additional notes about the Major Arcana here from a guy who's read Waite's Key to the Tarot:

The Fool represents all of those things, but its emphasis is specifically the notion of infinite potential/beginning of the journey.

The Magician is associated with considerable power/knowledge that is, nevertheless, incomplete. Think a freshly minted PhD with no work experience or books out.

The key to understanding the High Priestess is the veil on the card (the veil of the Temple of Solomon that concealed the way to the Holiest of Holies, specifically). She's someone who is in the possession of/the guardian of hidden knowledge.

The Lovers seems fairly straightforward, but there's a catch. Compare the imagery in classic decks between the Lovers card and the Devil card. A good deck preserves this connection.

The Chariot is most associated with power/victory, but only of a material/temporary nature. Think winning a big battle or defeating a difficult mid-boss.

The Wheel of Fortune can be either a positive or negative card. It's strongest association, though, is with the notion that Fortune is fickle and that both success and failures are often reversed.'

Strength has little to do with actual, physical strength. As noted by the other guy, it's all about inner strength/resolve.

The Hanged Man is an ambivalent card, and how it's divined depends greatly on the circumstances. The figure on the card is based on the story of how Odin hung himself from the branches of the World Tree for a week for the sake of greater knowledge and discovered the Runes as a result. Its general meaning should thus be understood as "enduring a great trial and becoming wiser/stronger for having done so."

As the other poster indicated, Death is not actually all that bad of a card. It can be divined as actual, physical death, but it's usually more associated with endings and/or a change in circumstances for good or for ill.

The Tower is an extremely ill-omened card. In a standard deck, the only one that is a worse draw is the 9 of Swords. It should be understood to represent all of the things listed as well as just disaster in general.

The Star, by contrast, is almost always a good draw unless it's inverted. It's associated with hope, in addition to all of the other qualities listed.

The Moon indeed means all of the qualities previously listed, but in the sense of them afflicting you. It can generally divined in most situations to mean "bewilderment/temporarily losing your way."

The Sun has an additional association with children, which is natural given its other meanings. If the Star is hope, the Sun is innocent, wholehearted happiness.

Judgment is not always positive. Its underlying meaning in all readings is coming face-to-face with the consequences of your actions, both good and evil, and settling accounts.

Is Daibanchou worth a play? I heard about it a little while back (Something about it being similar to SR, but maybe I have that confused with another game)

I love me some Chrono Trigger, but...no. Not even a little bit.

ATB is actually shit, combo attacks require a small roster (unless you abstract them out I guess) / and a huge number of sprites and animations.

Basically none of what makes Chrono Trigger good would transition well, except for *maybe* the departure from step based random encounters that we saw in 03. Unfortunately that game had it's own problems, most notably with experience scaling.

Really all I want from X is a return to grid based dungeon crawling. Tried and true.

I'd say Daibanchou is a bit easier to figure out its battle mechanics though. Although I never got the strengths and weaknesses.

It's a strategy game, but very different from SR.

It's not as forgiving as SR either. But you won't get *stuck* either like you can on certain castles on Sengoku 5 star. Which is good, because there each of the three "sections" has it's own turn limit before game over. (25 for School Chapter, 25 for District, 100 for National)

Combat is 9/10ths attrition and unit management.

It's fun but don't bother trying for 100 percent. Play til you get bored, but don't push yourself. You have to beat it like 10 times for everything, with extreme optimization.

For various reasons that I've probably got saved somewhere, I think it's so vastly inferior to SR that it doesn't even merit a space on my hard drive, despite me only beating in once.

As for if its worth a play or not - I'd say yes, but only if you've got an empty backlog. To give one example that I don't think this general will find controversial, I'd say you're better off playing Rance I through to 4.2 (or the remakes/digests/whatever) in order to then go on and play KR than you are playing BBA.

Personally I'd love to see some Suikoden mechanics implemented in Rance. While Quest really should've been the game to take more inspiration from it especially in the castle mechanics part given that X is likely to have a big playable cast it's still not totally too late. Suikoden's combined attacks are much simpler than in Chrono Trigger and require only matching characters to be in the party. But what I really would love to see is some bosses that need several full parties to bring down like that famous battle against Luca Blight. Seeing some dungeons that require several parties to proceed simultaneously would be nice too.
