I recently bought Witcher 3 and soon realized I won't be completing all of the game's quests. So I figured I should at least do the long questlines, like Bloody Baron and Ladies of the Woods, don't want to miss those.

However, is there a way to tell the difference between deep and long secondary quests and your ordinary MMORPG style secondary quests? Is there any danger I will miss quality content if I don't complete just everything?

Alright, I recently started hacking at Witcher 3 after playing through Witcher 1. Few questions:

First: Where the fuck are my fighting styles? It's annoying as hell fighting a pack of neckers when I can only really go at them one at a time or two if one of them runs into my sword on the way there. In W1 I could just use the Griffin/Group style and go ham on drowners but now I'm having to pick them off one by one. Am I missing some control schema somewhere?

Second: How am I supposed to go about fighting large monsters? I've died five times to this Cockatrice/screecher outside the Bloody Baron's place because it seems impossible to not get hit by its attack with its gigantic hitbox.
Dodge Left, clipped by the feathers for full damage.
Dodge Right, it turns as it attacks.
Dodge Backwards, it has more than a roll's reach.
Dodge Forwards past it, still take damage.
Maybe this is me coming off of Monster Hunter, but is there really no way to get out of getting smacked besides furiously rolling around it and hitting its ass or spamming Igni?

Third: With smaller monster I can get away Parrying and backstep-attack dancing, is there some way to parry larger monster attacks if I get the timing down or is it just in their nature to be unblockable?

Just finished the game. Holy shit what a ride, and Blood and Wine is still to do.
Got the "Ciri becomes a Witcher" ending, and HOLY SHIT I WAS SO FUCKING HAPPY TO SEE SHE WAS ALIVE.
Even when I entered the inn I though that Geralt was bringing a "final" present of Cirilla to Yen, judging by the boots. I don't know the other endings, apart from the one where Ciri and Geralt dies - thanks Youtube - but I guess that's the best one.

I would give out some, but I can't even remember that particular monster, you should wait till American hours are over (and weekends are always slow) to get a better answer.
Nope, you cannot parry a large monster attack, they'll break through. You can (and should) use Quen, though, when you're in trouble. Unlike TW1, it's immensely useful here.
Dodge/spam quen/light attack is the layman's way of making it through the game.
For airborne monsters, aard is very useful, alternatively the crossbow will do.

There is another ending other than the bad one, its outcome is Ciri doing an OOC move, but it is the most fleshed out epilogue.

This game does exploration pretty much perfectly in my opinion. Theres lots to see and find, and it pretty much always feels rewarding one way or another.

So, I'm not done learning all the lore but I assume this is touched upon. Why are witcher the only group to take advantage of the witcher mutations? It seems obvious that they are objectively better warriors, so why don't the different factions have some kind of special forces made up of people who go through similar upbringing to the witcher?

Oh I beat him eventually (super cowed, only go in for a single heavy attack or two lights and back out) but I was mostly joking when I meant spam dodge. The real problem is that if I timed it right I'd dodge the initial attack but the hitboxes on them were so gigantic that I'd get hit on the back end. It's less about deliberate movement and more about never not moving.

Red Dead Redemption handled it well. The mixture of bandit outposts, random encounters, hunting/treasure finding minigames truly made it feel densely packed yet not overwhelmingly so to the point that it feels like padding (i.e Witcher 3)

You can tell CDPR tried to emulate Red Dead Redemption in many facets (I believed CDPR said that they were trying to strike a balance between Skyrim and RDR or something) but sadly, like many of the gameplay elements in Witcher 3, the peak was simply "good enough" rather than being something truly excellent.

I just hope CDPR prioritize in some areas with Cyberpunk 2077. Witcher 3 played it waaaaaay to safe for my tastes. I hope they go all out with the RPG mechanics and allow us to truly role play similar to older RPGs.

PST is actually the worst of every world in this regard. Pre-built human male main character with the same backstory no matter who uses him, but no personality of any kind. You get all the drawbacks of both a pre-made character and a cookie cutter generic character with none of the benefits. It's overrated.

Basically the only benefit to CAC is getting to try new builds and explore new gameplay options. Story and characterization actually suffer from it. Since CDPR sucks at game balance and always has, that leaves me with little to no interest left in Cyberpunk.

Not every game needs to be fully voiced in order to have "personality". Compare him to the monotone "scruffy man #102040" Geralt and it's worlds apart. Sure you will probably disagree due to the likelyhood that you've read the books (like most people in this general), books that have allowed you to flesh out the character but going purely based on Witcher 3 then Geralt is a totally generic Gary Stu character with zero personality to himself either and in fact, it's a direct character trait.

Actors and actresses? They roleplay, professionally. They didn't write the script. With very few exceptions, they didn't choose the character. But they're doing far more roleplaying than any Gen Y betalet stroking his neckbeard with cheeto encrusted fingers and having a good chortle after taking the Renegade option to [right hook] Khalisa bin-diversity al'stockantagonist.

Pre-existing characters like Geralt faced with novel situations was a step in the right direction, not an impediment to roleplaying. It's the only time I played a game and really felt like I was deciding what a particular person would do. At least until BAW. Geralt felt pretty generic there.

See, you're bringing in multiple games now with decades worth of source material vs an original game with original lore and an original plot + character.

Comparing Witcher 3 vs Planescape as single entities is a more fair comparison and Geralt comes out not only looking significantly more restrictive (in regards to role playing potential) but significantly more boring, lifeless and generic. He's another scruffy voiced protag whereas the Nameless One is dependent on the player.

It's why I loved Planescapes dialogue system (VtMB also handled it extremely well). It allows you to develop the charatcer the way YOU want him to be developed and Cyberpunk 2077 would do well to take notes if they are going to Character Creation route.

The difference is Geralt has, yes, even in just a single entry of the game, a personality that shines through. That weird combination of misanthropic cynicism and beaten idealism that is present in the books? Absolutely present in the games, even without knowledge of what came before. The much-loathed Outskirts in TW1 showcase it fantastically throughout, and no matter what side you think he chooses, he's disgusted with the whole affair. Nothing has that impact in Torment.

The idea that an 80+ hour RPG epic is insufficient to capture the level of characterization of a small bundle of short stories printed in Polish pulp magazines, that this is an unfair comparison for that reason, is absolutely absurd. It just goes to show how low story telling standards for games really are.

But then, gamers don't want a story told. They just want to be the hero.

It was a good game but it had some big flaws and the prose was pretty cringy. People just hold it up as a masterpiece because they played it when they were 10. Or they've never read/watched anything worthwhile.

tl;dr for the people in need of adderall: I like RPGs with custom characters. But I like them for hte gameplay options, not the inevitably shitty roleplaying options. If you want good roleplaying with a custom character and not a Bioware style Choose Your Own Waifu sycophant fest then get a GM. Video games just can't do that, and trying makes the games worse.

Nah, the only thing absurd is what you just said. CDPR literally had everything written for them and even then, they still managed to make Ciri and Geralt some of the most boring characters in recent memory.

Stupid question, but what actually happens when you level up in TW3? Do you just get a skill point (and mutagen slots)? overall fighting power seems to be mostly gear dependent. Kind of annoying since at like lvl 50 without NG+ I'm still using primarily 40 gear because the witcher sets are easier to keep track of then random relics.

Same. After ME2 I pretty much swore off the entire genre. Getting TW1 on sale long after it was released brought me back. TW2 kept me there. Then CDPR got mainstream and threw it all away like always happens. Oh well. Lessons learned. I actually enjoyed ME2 mostly but by the end I realized that none of this was likely to mean anything and that shot of the nearly infinite (and unlike in the actual game, quite varied) Reaper fleet convinced me they'd written themselves into a corner. I waited to buy ME3 and ended up not buying it at all once I heard what happened. TW1 and TW2 were a weird fucking thing to experience after having gotten used to that kind of RPG.

Banner Saga owns btw. I mean nowhere near the production values or quality of dialogue or characters as in TW3, but there's other ways to get involved in a story (made by three people on a a less than one million dollar budget, IIRC). It kicks me in the balls more than most RPGs ever have. And PoE is the most fun tactical RPG combat I've ever had. It's story has its moments too.

There's really no excuse that these things should be mutually exclusive with high production values, but it seems that it will always be that way in the gaming industry.

Considering the way things have been going over the years and the current state of the industry, I'd say you're just a realist. And I admit back then I was overly enthusiastic, I had quit gaming for several years and then ME and DA pulled me back in. It wasn't until ME3 hit that I realized what a fool I'd been. Then TW1 and TW2 gave me hope again and now all this. In the end it's better to have no hope and be pleasantly surprised I guess.

Yeah, I was wary to try it out at first because I'd seen people complain about certain aspects, but there's so much soul and effort put into that game that you just can't help but feel it. Second one is better. Combat is much more varied with new abilities, lots of different kinds of enemies, terrain barriers. All the set up from the first game is done, so you can get straight to the meat. And the story is getting pretty trippy. Things just keeps getting worse, the whole way.

They intend for another one. Which is pretty much a given since the second one ends on a cliffhanger. They claim they always intended a trilogy but...well, I've heard that line before. That said after playing the second game then going back to play the first, there's hints of shit going on under the surface that I couldn't see except in hindsight. This is not something Mass Effect ever had. So there's signs that they may have been telling the truth and know exactly where they're going.

Best part? EVERYTHING carries over. I'm not talking about just decisions. I mean, when I imported my save my caravan was just the size and shape I'd left it in, every hero had the same level, stats, and gear I'd left them at. Everything.

But yeah definitely recommend it. Especially to people on the fence because of how short the first game is. Get Banner Saga on sale then get Banner Saga 2 and import the save. That amounts to a pretty decent playtime for an indie game. Plus it's well suited to replays.

I see, that makes sense. I wasn't sure how relevant the DLC characters would be in the rest of the game, glad to hear that they actually are. When I played I only got as far as meeting Zahua but what a memorable meeting that was, I really wasn't expecting to find a companion from a fish barrel. Devil of Caroc sounds intriguing, I only she's a golem and golem companions tend to be interesting.

I hear you but I also blame developers in general for catering to the lowest common denominator throughout the years. How often do you see actual well fleshed out realistic romances in games as opposed to checkpoints between first flirt, second flirt, kiss, and fade to black sex scene? Stuff like that made people get used to it and now it's damn hard to get back on track. I imagine writing a single romance intertwined with the main story would be a good way to start, but then you'd get waifufags screaming about muh forced romance and why didn't we get to waifu character x etc. I'm not even sure how to fix this whole mess.

That's so annoying. I prefer well-written characters with believable relationships (whether platonic or romantic). If you just want to fap to your waifu, the internet is yours, go look up some fan art or something. And really, this shit is part of why games and gamers are mocked, because of devs catering to lonely autists who want waifus first instead of focusing on writing actual characters who aren't there to stroke the player's ego.

Exactly. For something similar to work in a game with a new IP, it'd have to be building from the start, and be at the least a major subplot. They'd pretend it was about the characters or the writing, of course. But deep down, that would be the real reason.

Marketing is one thing. They actually did their best to limit references to anything that came before in several areas. They had Yennefer and Ciri because they committed to it awhile ago but as development goes on you can see more and more dropped threads from previous games and the books, despite their initial intentions. This is absolutely true. I hated brochefags before TW3 but I hated even more that CDPR decided to pander to them in the actual game. Ruining characters for romance or bromance is shitty practice and shouldn't be encouraged.
