actually they do, doors can actually stop 12.7mm API of M113, while side armor can be penned at close range even by 7.62 AP, with exception of uparmored "D" model.
And frankly, BMP has much more severe survivability issues, like cook-out prone ammo and general crampiness, for leaking diesel to be important problem.
