I agree with this and really hate the parts of the game that get meta because of it. I've seen a few stories that make the characters aware that they're just playthings subject to the player's whims and they're always bleak, nonsensical pieces of shit full of misery porn. There's one floating around out there that makes Papyrus suddenly aware that everything he does and says is part of a set routine he can't fight against, and the plot is leading absolutely no where.

To add on to that, when the characters are acknowledged in-universe to exist as pieces of coding, it makes for a boring story where the characters have no real initiative of their own and no chance for meaningful growth. There are no stakes anymore, nothing the characters could do will ever matter or change anything because their entire world could be deleted with a few clicks of a mouse. Their struggles and achievements aren't their own, they're just a result of coding. Their personality, their relationships, every action they commit, every choice they make, it's all just coding. It can all be rewritten in any way at any point in time for any reason, it's computer coding, it's easy to edit.

It's stupid and makes absolutely everything in the story pointless. It's not satisfying or engaging to read about characters that aren't treated like actual people.

in the game I think it's fine, I'm having trouble wording it at the moment but I think Toby had some other goals in mind with the genocide route

as a narrative I don't like some parts of that route (and some neutral routes) because they don't make a lot of sense
as a video game that's going against expectations and manipulating the player into feeling like absolute shit, it does its job fine

in fanworks, where it's just a story, I'd prefer Frisk, Chara, and determination, the player isn't necessary (Frisk could stand in for them anyway) and just adds confusion
