Anyway there's no "proper canon". If a character is important, they'll show up. That's how that shit works. The main cast is usually limited to Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Characters like Shadow, Blaze, Jet, etc appear as needed. Simple shit.

The story concept in general isn't all that bad if you ignore Sonic as a whole. He acted OoC the whole time and made that story of him playing fetch with the princess physically painful. Shadow's was fine and aside from Silver being blindly trusting, scripting and VA aside. I would rather have had 06's script redrafted a few times and screened rather than the non-story Colors had.

Talking Sonic Team games, the last game we got with multiple playable characters was Sonic Runners and everyone was loving the playable characters because of what they added to the game. No one cared if it was Sonic or not, all that mattered were characters that did significant things to the score. So most people opted for Rouge, Amy, Espio, etc. The thing that killed the game ironically was Sega's bs way of unlocking these characters with Roulette wheel among other things like cheap "free to play" mechanics.

And it's underselling how well well received games with multiple playable characters were before 06. Especially the handhelds which weren't just Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles. People weren't complaining about Amy, Cream, or Blaze because they had the core Sonic mechanic down. It all boils down to game play decisions more than anything else. The character's themselves aren't the main issue people had with them since Adventure 1.

I don't get this absurd hate for any serious moments in Sonic. Even in the Pontaff games, there were serious moments. In Colors, Sonic faced Eggman alone in space and ran away from a black hole. In Generations, Modern and Classic Sonic nearly died thanks to the Time Eater. And Lost World was chock full of them. Sonic's cockiness from the last two games backfires and causes the Zeti to overpower Eggman and get Tails caught in a trap and turned into a robot, Eggman falls in lava (it's a fake death, but it's still kinda sad), and Sonic watches as Knuckles and Amy get the life sucked out of them along with the rest of the planet. Shit, Lost World's dark when you think about it.

That's not why I don't like sonic being dark. I don't like it when sonic tries to hard to be dark because they always try too hard to be dark. To put it in other terms, I can't take sonic seriously trying to be dark. It needs to have a very good sense of tone and levity because if you try to take a character that looks like a giant mickey mouse and make him dark, it becomes absurd. However the opposite end of the equation is too much levity, which means there's no really conflict or threat. Sonic needs a good mix of the two. I'd say in that sense, adventure is a pretty decent set of tone. Or even Heroes. It has dark moments, sure, but there's a definite sense of levity and fun moments that balance with the darker tones. (that said the issue with Heroes is that no one fucking shuts up so it's still not great at that)

I would say Unleashed more than Colors. Even things that would be a major threat didn't feel threatening or serious at all due to the entire tone of the game. Plus, it didn't have anything, well, "meaningful" in its story. Unleashed had the whole element of a god-being being able to actually experience the world its responsible for creating, the whole deal with Sonic being so true to himself that he doesn't get mentally affected by Dark Gaia, and the bitter-sweet feeling of having to say goodbye to a new friend. One of the few things I will say the games have gotten better with, tone-wise, is eggman. Sonic adventure 1 and 2, for as much as they're praised, Eggman's kinda just an evil genius. He doesn't really have a really defined personality. That doesn't really start surfacing until around sonic Heroes (which is funny considering that one's mostly just metal sonic.) I think, aside for some of the more corny jokes and Orbot and Cubot kinda giving us some saturday morning cartoon bantering, Eggman has been done really well lately.
A great mix between a snake oil salesman, an evil dictator and a spoiled brat. Honestly the opening cutscene for Lost world (and a lot of other scenes of him in the game) has some of my best eggman moments.
