People in /scg/ complain that other cargo ships can't compete with the Hulls since they can carry greater loads at a time but fail to realize that a comparison of numbers is ignores other factors that affect real profit and success. Hull ships look very attractive until you realize they can't protect anything for shit and that even the virtual poorfag with the hull A will need to shell out money for an escort.They're great options in safe space and if you're doing very well the escorts aren't a problem but the fact that you need a specific environment to make them function properly is very limiting, especially when coupled with the fixed and unmalleable role of a freighter the series has compared to the Freelancer.

We have no idea how much anything you are saying is the case. Looking at the way they have been building out the Stanton system, people may well be able to make whole careers trading WITHIN ONE SYSTEM, and there is no reason that can't be a central heavily policed one like Stanton, Magnus, Terra, etc.

Or maybe you are right, and you won't be able to earn the big space bucks without traveling through dangerous areas. But we don't know either way, so it isn't anything to take a stand on either way.

Mostly things that don't just look like planes.
I really like the Reliant, mode shift ships are really, really cool to me, and I like that it's a vertical design over the predominately horizontal ones. The Khartu-Al as well, but it doesn't have any cargo room.

The Cutlass looks really cool too, it strikes me as a car design, with the front fin/wing things being the front wheels and the engines in the back being rear wheels.

The Freelancer is nice, but I just feel like it's too big for me.
I'd like a Pick-up, not a Semi. And I really feel like the Reliant fits that role perfectly, but I don't have it and I don't feel like I can't really make my own opinion on how it flies, it's armament, and so on without being able to fiddle with those things.

If they actually do keep with the current star system scale they are building 3.0 with, the universe is going to be way bigger than anyone anticipated. That "you could spend dozens of hours in one system" promise actually seems accurate. And many of the safest systems are right next to each-other, with stable, large jump points connecting them

People like to exaggerate how bad any ship is. I'd let you fly around in my Reliant, but I have no idea how matchmaking works. Honestly if you just ask nicely at Port Olisar someone will let you.

Armament wise it is very comparable to the other starter ships, it's weakness is how it falls to pieces at the moment, though hopefully they will fix that. Who knows.

What I've said is the ideal balance that the devs have repeatedly said they want. If, in practice, protection isn't that important, game balance is ruined. Ships like the 'Lancer (especially the MAX) become redundant and pure dogfighters will be limited in job opportunity.

Trade runs typically work in that the shorter and safer the route, the less money you'll get. So it may take a lot of runs, or a lot of cargo, to make things break even.

Now I don't know if stuff like fuel costs are going to be in the game, or how much they are, but it might end up being that ships like the Hull series, generally being so large, use up so much fuel that in system runs simply are not cost effective. the other reason I'm not super attracted to the Hull series (aside form it's sleek sexy look when not carrying any cargo, can we please get the Hull cockpit on the Freelancer?) is that it looks like it has little in the way of defensive ability for how much potential money it can have.

Yeah, like you say there are even more variables in there like fuel, and possibly the market being dynamic, so runs changing all the time. You can just as easily say that, with the massive amount of money you need to spend on the larger Hulls, and the amount of cargo they shift, the game will HAVE to make them hella viable. Or maybe they will fuck that up and they won't be seen as useful. CIG could end up highly overvaluing expensive goods, making the most profitable runs always being in Freelancers or Constellations.

There are just so many variables is all I'm saying, so adopting a know-it-all attitude right now is silly. Even with the trading meta you can extrapolate from everything CIG has said there are loads of what ifs, and that is giving the BIG what if that things will work exactly how they envision.

Trade as a player controlled thing will always be tricky. In the age of sail, typically trading ships were very heavily armed themselves, and had escorts. You'd really only find more firepower (legally) in a navy ship and fleet. Treasure ships were rather well protected. Some of the most famous pirate ships were originally treasure ships upon which the pirates added even more canon.

Problem is making the trade ships too safe means that people won't bother to attack them, or would be forced to attack in such large numbers that there's little to no profit.

But the idea is that the Hull series is a purely focused cargo carrier, so the idea of it losing "points" in other catagories; either it will be really slow (or expensive to fly) or it will have less in the way of weaponry (which is what it looks like right now, but that can, of course, change) or a combination of both, seems like a natural presumption.

Look for a 2.5 spreadsheet of weapon stats and work it out yourself. I don't have one that updated. Try to monoboat anyway so all three weapons converge, or at least have the nose weapon be a tier up from the wings. Possibly with tarantulas still?

It took me ages last time I flew my 325a but I did find a loadout that dealt with the overheating.

Technically nothing. 315p is just a 300i that is geared for up for exploring, and the 325a is a 300i with armor, missiles and more guns equipped. They all have the same equipment options and hard points.

The only 300 series ship that actually has a modified body is the 350r with it's twin engines

They fixed ships having auto fire railguns and only high-rank NPCs have Engineer mods. As to whether the game is fun now, I suppose it's a matter of perspective. I fucking hate Engineers because it didn't "unlock your ship's potential." The engineers bullshit got fixed, they fucked up their pointers for their NPC generation code, so abominations like frag cannons shooting 50 beam lasers are no longer a thing. Combat against NPCs has improved quite a bit, they aren't braindead anymore and they can't kill you with idiotic glitched weaponry. Other than that, they made a QoL sweep on the Engineers system, mats are easier to find and accrue. There was a change to what mats are used for certain upgrades I think. Just check the patch notes on it. As far as what is coming in October for 2.2, there's everything in pic related.

Just came back from Frankfurt. Sadly we only had ~30 minutes because whoever scheduled our visit was unaware that they had to do the preparations and actual RTV stream afterwards.

Anyway, got to meet Brian Chambers. Really cool guy. Gave a tour of the office and talked about procedural planets for a bit. Apparently the first iteration of that was made by a single guy who asked for permission then kind of disappeared for 2 months, after which he returned with a working system. Originally planets weren't scheduled until months later.
I asked him how long it would take them to create a planet from scratch. According to him they can get an entire planet with proper terrain on which you can land everywhere in a couple of minutes. Artists have access to tools that allow them to simply paint zones on a planet and the editor will automatically fill that out with prebuilt assets (rocks/plants etc. depending on the planet type) in a way that doesn't look repetitive. Buildings can be created from prebuilt blocks as well and ultimately the time it takes depends on how much gameplay they want a certain planet to offer. He hinted at the possibility to put "empty" systems in the game, then adding more gameplay to that in a later patch.

If planets are done right there could be a lot of fun and adventure to be had. A powerful organization could colonize a planet and form their own player run towns and government, a city state of sorts. If two or more orgs colonized you could end up with different countries.

I love all the space stuff and ships but a whole planet could contain all sorts of adventures. I could spend a lot of time planetside and when I finally do go to space it might be more special.

Auroras seem to be relatively decent at fighting too though. If you are the guy who was gonna get the exploration starter pack you could always get the Mustang Alpha Starter and then just upgrade it to a 315p or Freelancer.

Mustang should give you more store credit than the Aurora when upgrading I think.

Depends on the planet, but yes. Some planets will have multiple biomes. Becasue every planet is "handmade" with the brush tools, so large swaths of land can be "painted" in short periods of time. And after that the precise artistry of the landing zones, PoI's can begin.

There's a few missions available to play, one's actually pretty cool with an audio log story behind it.

They reward you with credits, you can then spend them on weapons, clothes, etc.

There's a new area available, Grim Hex, for the Edgelord pirate in all of us.

It's pretty fun, but it gets repetitive after you're done with the first slew of missions.

So basically, my Superhornet Colonel package with LTI is not listed, so I can't buy it back, and I'm stuck with a sucky Aurora ES with 2 months insurance because of the stupid pledge/package system and their refund system. I basically melted stuff down to get the refund and got stuck with the Aurora ES.

Looks like the only thing I can buy back is the Reliant LTI, which isn't so bad, as long as I don't have to pay insurance all the time. If I can buy that back, I can melt the Aurora ES, and I also have $15 store credit too.

You think I should get the Reliant LTI back?

Well it's just a dogfight you pay money to enter. You're not allowed to use missiles (it disqualifies you) and you get a deployable item that lets you forfeit before getting blown up. If you damage the opponent enough, they'll surrender and you get the winnings. The game sets winnings based on how good your ship is compared to the opponent. The hardest ships have dual-mounted front lasers. It's nothing crazy but it's neat.

The Feudal States OXP also gives the ability to do missions for feudal planets in exchange for titles (and cash), which is also kinda cool. A bunch of flavor enhancements, but they still add to the game.

There's also really large OXP missions if you're into that.

Most backer rewards are tied to your account. There are some specific rewards tied to your ship pledge but they are probably not special.

LTI is now only offered on ship concept sales and on ships or packages over $1,000 USD in value.

If you want LTI then the best bet is to wait until Citizencon, and hope that they reveal a cheap ship that you can buy with LTI and upgrade.

Failing that you can always buy an LTI package on the grey market but honestly I do not think LTI will be worth paying more for.

Looking at that list it looks like you still have your Colonel package live on your account. You can't buy back anything that is still live, even if it has been upgraded.

If the Colonel package has genuinely disappeared then you should contact Support and they'll put it back for you.

Just be careful if you melt your Aurora because if you don't have a Colonel package on your account then it might be the only thing giving you access to the game. The Reliant with LTI - and anything else that is "standalone ship" - does not give access to the game.

Just made 5 attempts at the ICC assistance mission in an asteroid belt, keep getting hit by missiles, exploding in the wreckage cause I didn't slow down in time or getting suicide bombed by the pirates.

On my 5th attempt I finally killed both the pirates, stopped near the probe and then my game crashed

Spheres have a couple of advantages but are actually shit.

Due to armour sloping the armour of the sphere is effectively much thinner in the centre of the target that the enemy ship sees. Therefore the enemy always has a perfect shot, and will inflict the maximum possible damage with any shot that penetrates the armour.

The sphere ship is not effective at radiating heat and provides no natural cover for radiators, antennae etc..

In comparison a wedge or arrowhead ship is far more difficult to penetrate from the front and sides. It is vulnerable from above and below but the likelihood of something vital being hit is much lower. The long shape means that it can mount one big weapon on the spine.

Just as the designers of early tanks discovered, if you try to protect from every angle then you just end up with weak coverage everywhere. It is much better to make it very strong in one direction, and then adopt a doctrine that maximises the ability to point that direction at your enemy.

the technical issues really get in the way of the game right now unfortunately. I haven't done a mission in ages because it's too choppy and unresponsive for me to even try fighting. I just hang out at Olisar and fuck around, or get brave and try to fly a ship. Just had my first taste of PVP.

Went to Corvalex to do the "Upload the data" mission... had never been before but I figured it could be dangerous. I took my Gladius around to the side and spent a minute tucking it up nice and neat in a dark shadowed corner so people wouldn't be able to see me...

Got inside, explored the front lobby, then I heard the sound of another ship approaching. I took a defensive position on the inside and waited. The player came in, looked right at me, then just kept moving down the hallway.

I thought he would be friendly so I figured I would just follow him, he seems to know where to go. Down the elevator and down the next hallway, he goes into the open dormitory to look around and turns around to see me for the (again I guess) first time. I flash my flashlight on and off at him showing some indication that I'm not shooting, and ZIPZIPZIZIP I hear his SMG start turning on.

So naturally, I decide to use the energy shotgun I had just previously purchased and lay waste down into that shitty little bunk room. Fucking tore the guy to pieces and kill him in seconds.

I know it's not the same as the gunplay on the PVP station ( there is one, right?) but I was excited as hell and even following/moving this guy in zero G was super disorienting. I kept having to reorient myself and think "The enemy gate is down."

How about a long range space bomber? Spends the majority of its time in space looking to capital groups to torpedo. no need for wingy bits. I guess you could make the argument that it's launched from ground bases. But it doesn't exactly need 5 miles of runway to get airborne, it's equipped with vtol.

The plan for SC is to build a universe with lots of interacting mechanics, like an ecosystem. There really are no professions, you just do what you want to do and figure out a way of making money from it.

Player actions, as well as the AI and economy layers, will create events that provoke players to interact with the world and with each other.

Let's say for example that a factory is buying electronics, but there is a shortage in the sector. That factory will spawn jobs for traders to bring electronics. The presence of those traders might attract pirates, and the presence of those pirate might attract mercenaries and bounty hunters.

The role of the AI and economy will be to keep these interactions ticking, but players always have the ability to jump in and start having an impact. In our above example it could have been player pirates or traders that caused the electronics shortage in the first place.

There is an interview with Brian Chambers commenting on the player-owned colony idea. He says that all of the technology required for this is possible, and that most of it would be required for other things anyway. Reading the old Wing Commander manual. All the human fighters are space planes, apparently they can't actually fight inside an atmosphere because they can't deal with overpressurization so any nearby missile explosion causes them to implode like tissue paper. What do you guys think for the Gladius? Should I swap the CF-007 on the gimbals on the wings for two fixed CF-117s? I have a pair from my Hornet I dont fly.

Not sure if it's worth losing the gimbaling for the extra firepower. I still have the Scorpion nose mounted and gimbaled, though I could swap that for a single CF-117 and leave the gimbaled 007's on the wing

Gladius really should not be languishing down there with the Aurora LN for firepower. I would want to see it get a S3 nose gun at the very least, ideally it should have 2 x S2 up there for 4 x S2 total. Even then it would need a buff to toughness to make it worthwhile.

Right now ballistics are vastly better than energy in PvP, because every shot you make will inflict damage.

Energy weapons have to fight past shields, so if the enemy changes angle or breaks line of sight for a few seconds then you are basically starting from scratch.

Energy weapons have higher velocity and so better accuracy. They are very good in Vanduul Swarm because the AI there have basically no shields.

Mantis is Size 3 so isn't comparable. They used to be popular but I think people use Broadswords or Taranula Mk3s in that size now.

You fight in atmosphere in Wing Commander 3. So from my completely objective and representative anecdotal evidence, 2.5 is fucking great. The ships that people seem to shit on like the Reliant and the Cutlass are fine too. Persistence and the mystery of something like Grimhex really adds a lot to the game, having something to work towards, it starting to feel like a coherent game now and not a glorified tech demo.

Framerate really dropped when I tried to use a Constellation though, no idea what being inside a Starfarer would be like.

the old idea was the Terrapin was a tough little ship people often modified for mining.

Then CIG decide that mining was such a complicated operation that you needed *expensive* ships specially built for it instead of just slapping a mining laser on an aurora or something and released the Prospector as the "starter" miner. So they had to bullshit up some new idea for the Terrapin about search and rescue and exploration.

Why they didn't just slap some extra seats inside it and label it a small dedicated drop ship is beyond me. They clearly needed one for Sq42 anyway.

Well god knows, the ship stats page is worthless, but according to it;
LN: 13 cargo units 2xS2 2xS1 guns 4xS2 Missiles S3/3x light shield

Hornet F7C 13 cargo units 3xS3 guns 8xS1 missiles S4/4x light shield Plus the hornet lets you take off the cargo box and slap on a turret or S4 gun when ever you want.

Get rid of the stupid fucking things. Make them remote controlled by the co-piolt or gunner station inside ship. Also stop the intentional deadzone bullshit and start putting turrets in intelligent places on ships.

That's what I mean tho, if you're gonna carry cargo in a Super Hornet you better hope it's fucking space gold or something. Otherwise you're just wasting the platform to do a job inefficiently.

Well they wont remove them from the game unfortunately and not all turrets and be slaved or swapped for other parts.

All we can do in those cases as players is let npcs man them and hope they do a better job.

the turrets already suck hard, at least putting them is places where they can better defend a ship might make them at least a little better.

No more of those aft turrets that are placed way too far away from the actual end of the ship. IE the Retaliator, the Starfarer, and Freelancer

give control of them to a weapons officer to designate and attempt to shoot down sensor pings, if things get hairy they should be able to manual override and camera control any turret ala the turret on the super hornet. Allow them to run turrets in a master/slave setup to converge on single targets. It fits the WW2 fetishist theme chris roberts has as well, as a similar system was used in the B-29.

as turrets are right now they are a terrible experience and asking to be replaced either by npc's (automation) or flashfire mounts

Some sort of compensation for ship movement and relaxing of deadzones would probably work. Some sort of ED style gimbal assist might help too.

They do work right now, and it is fun to pretend to be Han/Luke don't get cocky, kid but to make them useful your pilot has to fly very a boring and predictable flight path which - at least on the connie, you're better off just throwing the thing around and bringing your main guns to bear. Manned turrets will be great on ships that you can't throw around like a scalded cat - like capitals etc - but on these smaller, dogfight capable ships, they are pretty dud.

This means it'll only cost you $5 to CCU into an Aurora LN, which is the best starter ship.
