Nationgen is balanced they said edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

MA game because there's been plenty of LA and EA lately. 4 players so far, starting with 10 minimum but 12 is preferred. Probably 2 UW max, more than that and there isn't really enough room for them.

I thought our pretenders would fuck it up since they were made with the mods. But perhaps it doesn't matter, since the mods doesn't modify pretenders?
>>
>>152779089
I am quite sure only Summod affects pretenders so it would not be an issue. I know for sure WH does not, so removing WH would not be a problem.

As it is the admin removed ME instead, I don't think that will cause problems either but since everyone seems to prefer ME to WH anyway, might as well go on the safeside.

How many gems of overcast are usually enough to make it last a fuckton of time (unless there's a nation casting dispel with gifted pearls of course).

year 5 Sea of Ice. It will make me completely safe from every player in my game except very late or by Arco, but it will take its sweet time (and seriously, unless i become a threath, and i will with time, it's a waste of pearls for them, they'd better disenchant it than teleport there).
By the way, since i'm retarded, if global slots are full, which global enchantments get overridden first? Does overcasting them protect them from an override if they aren't the "lowest overcast" in the bunch?
>>
I have a couple of newbie questions

1) When they say you should have your first Fort built by the end of the first year, that means I should probably start the construction at like 5 turns in and finish it before Year 1 is over, right?

2) Can someone give me practical examples of Diversity Pretenders? Or do people not use them into the meta in recent times?

From the name/context, I guess they're Pretenders that take paths that their nations generally don't have (especially if their nation is really narrow in magic paths), but how do you leverage that into a bigger or equal advantage compared to bless/scales/etc?
>>
>>152783174
Slot you get is random and overcasting works same way as dispel - your shit gets weighted against incoming global.

For Lemuria.
>>
>>152783279
So, consider this scenario:
>I cast Sea of Ice (normal cost 80) with 200 gems (120 overcast
>Global slots full, other enchantments have 100 overcast
>Someone casts yet another global
What happens in this situation?
>>
>>152783671
Thanks, but could you elaborate on e.g the general game plan, some tricks you can pull off with those paths and so on?
>>
>>152783251
Yes
Diversity pretenders aren't too common since they require a bit of luck and finesse to use, being that you will probably not have a stable source of non national path gem income for a while and diversity pretenders need that to be useful. They vary a lot, but generally they get just high enough paths to forge boosters and then cast important spells (globals, some of the better ritual summons, essential battlemagic for lategame) with those crafted boosters. There's only a few nations that can really get away with diversity pretenders in general, though.
>>
>>152781470

That isn't Llamaserver, that's Dominions.
>>
>>152783671
Lemuria is not a good example because of how rigged their scales are
>>152783761
Same thing that happens with every casting resolution. Game choses the order at which spells are resolved (descending or ascending mage ID at random, i think), and then according to that order globals roll against random slots.

>>152783842
>There's only a few nations that can really get away with diversity pretenders in general, though.
I would say any nation that can run a good scales build can run a diversity pretender as well. Which is quite a decent list of nations.

>>
Guys, all the forts on the map went invisible, as did the flags indicating who owns which territory.
What the fuck is this? Is it a hotkey I accidentally pressed? How do I make forts and flags visible?
>>
>>152783761

1d5 is rolled, giving a result from 1 to 5.

The global taking whatever slot just got rolled has it's gems overcast by + 5*caster level + 1d6 compared to the new global's gems overcast by + 5 * caster level + 1d6.

The one with the higher result takes the slot. Or keeps the slot.

If it keeps the slot, noone except the caster of the new global attempt will ever know.

For Ermor.

Now, mostly people take rainbows for sitesearching/new path access. Lemuria is a good example of a shitty nation that doesn't have sacreds (except mages and maybe centurions which nobody summons anyway), so it makes sense to make a pretender that has paths that you miss. In case of Lemuria, every fucking path in existence. With that >>152783671 you gain access (with boosters, obviously) to N4, F2-3 (enough for a flame spirit), A5 (enough for anything air-related including air queens), W5 (same), E5 (same), D999 (enough for utterdark/tarts etc). Additionally, it gets you access to great combat spells like Rain of Stones and Foul Vapors. And all that on an immortal chassis which greatly augments your already immortal mages.

There's definitely almost no point of making a rainbow for Ermor, because dual/tribless will win you any game. I already won enough with that, so I like to experiment.

Of course, only Lemuria and Ermor have that many path points for this kind of shit, so most other nations are much more restricted in that matter. Usually you'll want rainbows on nations with high scales. And out of combat.

What kind of scales do you have with it? Looks like you can't afford magic-3 luck-3 while having high dominion score: I haven't tried my hand in playing Lemuria yet but sacrificing those scales seems a bit unpleasant.

Ultimately, of course, the idea is the same as F1A2E2S6D7 (with dom8) Lich Queen that I've been looking into trying out, with small adjustments. The big difference is astral in favour of more water and earth: as I see it, astral lategame is more reliable than N/W/E/A since, being Lemuria, you pretty much lose the race to elemental royalty and such like by default and Rings give same kind of diversity options as elemental staves while using a type of gem you'll have in greater abundance.
>>
>>152785820
I do. It's quite possible to win MP game with a little bit of skill and luck, even if your build is shit. Especially on a nation like Lemuria where it doesn't really matter what you pick since neither scales nor blesses really matter.

if it's a gem generator and you put it up early(first 3 years), while you are not warring a nation with lot of S or a S god, you can just overcast it by like 15 and just recast it for way more if it gets dispelled way later into the game.

it also depends on who you are.
If pangea cast mother oak no one wants to risk a dispel, because Pangea get so many N gems that they might have overcasted by a lot, while if you cast a global of a gem that is not of one of your nation biggest paths, people might think you had few gems of that type.
no one would , for example, expect caelum to ever want to overcast by more than 50 a E global, so it's safe to try to dispel it, at least in the midgame.

>1) When they say you should have your first Fort built by the end of the first year, that means I should probably start the construction at like 5 turns

that would be very good but i menaged to start it way later in all my games and no one ever punished me.
it also depends on what nation you are.
i would say you need to start it before turn 10, and if your nation is quite weak early game or rely on high resource troops, you should try to do it sooner.

>but how do you leverage that into a bigger or equal advantage compared to bless/scales/etc?

there are several sites hidden in your lands ready to produce nature, death, astral, fire gems as soon as you discover them. a God that has the paths to search it or can summon a mage with those paths is valuable.
There are several spells that can win you a battle and you really only need one mage to cast, and it can be the defining battle of your first 1-2 wars.
Flaming arrows, storm, or even a really good scaling evocation can be strategically good. Special summons are good too ( example: look at caelum national summons or some scaling fire summons).
for lategame high nature always has nice globals if there are free global slots, D7 summons tartarian which are reaaaally good lategame, high blood or blood + death can let you summon quality troops lategame, high astral let you cast wish and forge the superboosters rings which let your nation reach multiple summons and battle spell.
Scales are good, but lategame are only good if your nation can obtain good mages and troops out of their cap with gold.
Some nations may consider taking a worse bless that gives them interesting spells to cast , as long the bless is still usable.
Most of the time you are ok with getting to other magical paths slowly with empowering/summons and just default to pick the best bless and scales.

Is summon stormpower still castable even if the storm is not up, or will the AI just not cast it?

I'm thinking because of casting order, there is no guarantee that storm will be cast first. What happens if you turn 1 summon stormpower and the other mages cast it before storm comes out?

Your cast order is literally the order of your mages in the troops menu. The guy on the top casts storm, the guys at the bottom cast storm power. And no, it's not castable without storm even in vanilla. Or are you talking about Caelum AoE stormpower? Because then I have no fucking idea.
>>
Is it a waste to build a temple/lab setup in every province?
I just sort of fantasize about putting wizard stacks in all of them.
>>
>>152797261
they don't cast it as far as i know.
casting order is known. just press y on the province the battle will take place and the order you see the commanders iwll be casting order.
careful that it will display both commanders in and out the fort.
>>

Casting order is entirely deterministic.

Press Y on the province your army is moving to. Orders are executed from the top downwards, by commander.

Thanks to llamabeast for referring me to red_rob, and to red_rob for doing some experimenting, it looks like we now have more useful info on the error!
In case you didn't see red_rob's post, it seems that this is a unique error that only happens when summod, ME, and WE are all in the same pbem together, presumably causing some kind of overload on the server since it seems to work in sp just fine.

I've remade the game without worthy heroes as he suggested.

>>
>>152803589
I don't consider it an expert game at all. I'm mediocre at best, though I can't speak for the others since we're all anonymous here.
I'm not sure if everyone who joined plans to join again, or even if the past remakes have had the same players.
I'd say you might as well just join for now. If a previous joiner makes himself heard and you want to give him his spot back I can always just delete your pretender anyway.

>do i just install those mods and put them in my mod file, create a pretender and send it to the server to join?
Yes, after that the game will automatically load the correct mods when you enter the game so you don't have to enable different combinations of mods every time you take a turn.

Also don't forgot to download the map.

>>152804140
I haven't but that's a good idea, I'll send him a reply with the new info.

Are there any recruitable or summonable H4s that can be propheted?
Or is divine channeling only available through priest communion?

>>152806296
Heros of some nations, also getting a prophet into the hall of fame, it dying, ritual of rebirth and repropheting works if the base chasis is H3
>>
>>152805079

It depends. Stuff like LA C'tis, Asphodel, Nazca? Can definitely benefit from propheting one of their high holy undead. Ermor and Lemuria too.

Marignon H3s? Not so much.
>>
>>152806207
Put the .dm file in mods and also put the folder with the .tga files in mods.
>>
>>152806207
Just unzip it and find where the .dm file is. If you drop the .dm file and everything in the same folder as the .dm file into your mods folder you should be safe.

I thought the map had a download link on llama just like the mods but I guess not. If nobody has posted a link by the time I get back I'll just upload it myself.

>>152806296

Priest communion, for the most part. There's also three Const8 holy boosters, and I believe Mari can get like Holy 12 stuff with transformation on those multiform angel summons.

Landwise, either Abysia or Arco but it's hard to say since Arco only showed how big Abysia's expansion was, but obviously not for itself.

So you're saying:

Hmm, it seems someone is extremely ill informed about the state of the world. Killing some PD with your golems isn't exactly a war, but hostile action is hostile action, so I guess you can call it a war. As for Pan, you seem to be under the impression that me and Pangaea are not having a friendly skirmish on or borders for fun.

Pangaea alerted me that he wanted to have an army clash last turn, and this next turn when we have our prepared armies, we will send them at each other and see who come out on top with our current compositions.

If I win, Pangaea will be giving me a prize of Fire Gems. If he wins, then I would be happy to give him some Death Gems and trade some death boosters to him. It is only fair after all.

I can distract you, maybe even bother you, but I decided to give other nations an opening to not get knocked down one by one. If they take it, fantastic, we won't have to repeat All Yesterdays Agartha, except with Sauro instead. If not, well . . . they chose their fate. Sadly nothing I can do.
>>
>>152842809
You're miles ahead in RP and Forts over all but R'lyeh, and a contender in all other graphs at around 3rd or 4th.
Abysia and Arco aren't incredibly far off behind you, but you're still solidly #2 (after Squids). It isn't enough that you're some super stupid spooky snowball though.
>>
>>152841138
In a memegame like this, freespawn and summons tend to be more important then recruited troops. See: Flatus Lemuria

R'lyeh has also recieved a lot of buffs over recent patches, and this is summod which gives them additional buffs. Summod R'lyeh is nowhere near the unwinnable mess that R'lyeh used to be (still a weak nation, though).

Don't discount his massive advantage in provinces just because he's playing a relatively weak nation, and actually check what R'lyeh has available rather than going by the old knowledge of it being useless on land.

You gotta take those stats with context. The ocean is pretty big and it has to be split between 4 players ( now 3). Meanwhile the land has to be split between dozen other players. Being #2 at provinces and forts on land is 10x more valuable than being #1 at provinces and forts underwater, because it's a lot harder.

tl;dr the best nation on land is stronger than the best nation on water, even if statistically the best nation on water has more gold.

Hmm, so it appears there is still a problem with Llamaserver running multiple large mods together. I've uploaded Magic Enhanced 1.2 and the Summod compatible version to the Llamaserver and run a couple of test games to make sure they are working.

Everything seems to have uploaded fine, however if you try to run either with Summod the server crashes when processing the turn. I've emailed Llama to see if he can identify the issue, hopefully this is something that can be fixed to allow games using both mods.
>>
>>152856715
So:
>Summod 0.65D + ME1.2 = crash
>Summod 0.65D + ME1.1 + WH = crash
>any other combination = works fine
>>
>>152856919
Pretty much. I'm guessing there is some kind of limit to the amount of mod code Llamserver will read. ME 1.2 is big enough that it and Summod 0.65d together hit the limit.

I'm hoping it is something that can be fixed on Llama's end and not something inherent to the server. Magic Enhanced and Summod together are almost twice the size of the old CBM mod so I'd guess this just hasn't been an issue previously.
>>
>>152851975
The issue is the latest patch changed the order that #firstshape and #landdamage applied in.

Search the mod for the monsters with the name "Dead" and assign them a sprite (just #cpyspr 1 works)

Is it a good idea to have your pretender enter the void, or is that just too much of a gamble? A pretender with void sanity, of course.
>>
>>152858869
Results are based on summoning level, the 2 path starspawns start with higher summoning.
>>
>>152858482
Actually, they never did in game, only in the Inspector.

Weirdly adding the Consume Soul attack removed the claw and bite in-game even without using #clearweapons, so I had to re-add them. As they were never formally removed the inspector showed them twice. I've tidied it up so it displays correctly in the inspector now.

I've been emailing Llamabeast to try to nail down the server crash error, he's sent me one of the turns that fails and it processes correctly on my laptop. Llama has also emailed JK to see if he can shed some light on things.

Well first off you'll want to have void sanity on your pretender, 10 will do but 20 is better. Chances of your void lord being attacked are pretty low, chances of being attacked by something that can kill it are lower still (this doesn't mean impossible however, I've had it happen on the first turn). Assuming you did pick a void lord, I think it's worth doing, after all in the rare case you do lose him, LA R'lyeh freespawns priests.

Remember when Caelum was attacked by 7 players by turn 18 in SansMemes? /domg/ can organize ganks when they put their heart into it

He actually survived the onslaught but was weakened so much Malakal playing Yomi later consumed him and players that Caelum had de facto killed, and this time no one was there to stop Yomi

Anyway, I think it's not so much about inability to organize ganks but being rigid in diplomacy, being unwilling to console past differences once a definite threat pops up, and subsequently being locked in conflict while someone runs away with the game. And then there are a lot of passive players who play to delay a guaranteed loss instead of being more decisive and giving an unlikely chance to win a shot, which is an entirely different beast to a chronic backstabber.

>>
>>152870706
>>152870807

>You want B9 because that stops people from just casting battlefield wide spells to kill everything you have
>You need a blood bless to slay battlefield-wide spell casters.

No, you don't because if you're playing Ermor correctly it shouldn't ever get to that stage of the game. W9D9N9 is objectively the best bless for MA Ermor, because all three of those are vital in the early game which is when you need to do as much damage to everyone around you as possible and grow as large as possible.
>>
>>152871590
So you can play out the transition from MA to LA ie. Make Mictlan Great Again.
>>
>>152871590
1. None of the pretenders lead the nation while blood practises were abolished. Indeed, many of them were imprisoned by the previous Pantokrator and couldn't possibly have. And in general, would-be gods don't necessarily have much of anything to do with people who worship them, after the disappearance of Pankoman Mictlan people would start worshipping any powerful spirit they'd encounter to fill the void

2. While not officially endorsed, some individuals are keeping the old traditions alive

Knights and lictors have 13 and 14 magic resistance respectively, which gets boosted even further by unholy protection. Regular skellies won't benefit from the bless, so in my opinion it is not very worthwhile. Plus, those spells don't come out until maxed out research trees, a lot later than actual battlefield clearers, and it's very hard to pull them off first turn.

Sure I have.

And hit and run Earthquakes are actually MORE dangerous to a B9 bless. Because W9 gives more defence which helps against Earthquakes, N9 and D9 gives more HP which can help your units survive Earthquakes, whereas B9 would only kill a mage that was intended to suicide anyways. Again, W9D9N9 is the best MA Ermor bless. Period.

You were talking about ending the game early, and yet in your very own screenshot you're in year fucking SIX. By that point, earthquakes are the LEAST of your worries, and more powerful battlefield clearing spells aren't countered by defence, yet they ARE countered by Blood Vengeance.

>There is a lack of supplies
>>
>>152873137
I'm listening to this dude desu
>>
>>152872757
Besides, a single earthquake is not sufficient to kill any of Ermor's sacreds once blessed, and if the enemy is "suicide earthquaking" (that is not a thing, by the way) he will need either multiple casts (which can not be done against a blood bless because the first cast kills the caster) or multiple casters (which will kill one another unless they ALSO have levitation at which point the enemy's put a considerable investment into the attack which will still get lost because of your blood bless)
>>
Is T-Strike worth casting without Storm and Stormpower?
>>
WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON WITH LLAMA? WHY IS IT NOT PROCESSING GAMES WITH ALL 2H FILES SUBMITTED?
I NEED MY DAILY DOSE GODDAMN IT
>>
>>152873908
yeees?it would be even more precise.

there are just few casters that can do it, and if you have more than 4 A2 mages then it's better to do storm + storm power since it's so fatigue intensive.
>>
>>152873908
T-strike is always worth casting, but why?

Storm is literally 1 level above T-strike, and SSP is conj 2, which needs only 150 rp. Most of the time you can't mass A3-4 mages that easily, and even they would gain more from +1A. And SSP allows you to cast T-strike with A2 mages.
>>
>>152873137

I was fucking around for the latter portion of that game just for the hell of it. Also, they aren't COUNTERED by B9, you'll still lose all your sacreds, it's just that the opponent will lose a mage or two in the process. Again, if you get to the late game, with opponents who are able to actually fight against you, then you've lost whether you have B9 or not.

MA Ermor, by its very nature, is a nation that must spread quickly and ruthlessly like a cancer. It can't sit around and wait until its opponents become strong enough to oppose it.

>>152873462

>"suicide earthquaking" (that is not a thing, by the way)

During the stage of the game you're talking about, sure it is. Because not every E nation has access to A as well, especially that early. So, if you have to fight off Ermors hordes, sometimes you need to make sacrifices.

>need either multiple casts

Except if you chose to go for the B9 bless, then you might have decided to forgo either the D9 or the N9 bless, in which case your Knights will be within the HP range of a single Earthquake. And you need those Knights.

>ALSO have levitation at which point the enemy's put a considerable investment

In the late game two Rings of Levitation worth 8 Air gems is not a "considerable investment". So again, if you let your opponents live that long and actually be a threat to you, you've failed.
>>
construciton 4 evocation 5 for boots, rings of levitation and EQ is not really lategame. you can get the research at turn 25 with most nations.

>>152874785

I don't understand what you're saying. I'm a proponent for the W9D9N9 bless, the other guy is the one that is saying that B9 is important. I mean, I guess you could go D9N9B9, but W9 is just such a nice bless for undead sacreds and is amazing in the early game when Ermor has to be especially aggressive.

>>
>>152874382

I don't know if you were talking to me or not, but, yeah, sure that'd be doable if you plan specifically for it with any nation. Also, it would still mean that your B9 sacreds would die at the cost of a couple of mages and and some 14 to 16 gems. It would be a Pyrrhic victory for Ermor again and again and eventually Ermor would lose, and you'd also hamper your early game aggression by taking the B9. Now if you go with the W9D9N9 bless, you might kill the nation going for that strategy before they manage to get to it where you couldn't have killed them in time if you'd gone with the B9, or at the very least you might be able to cripple them enough so they couldn't go for that strategy. All hypothetical, sure, but the fact still remains that Ermor is a nation meant to expand quickly and aggressively and the above mentioned bless allows you to do it far more effectively than any B9 bless would.
>>
>>152875851
Ha, shit. I'm a very bad player, I hoped I could play alone and have a decent experience.

The AI is pretty dumb once you figure out how to use magic reasonably effectively.
You can play by email or connect directly to a host, which is used for blitzes (playing a whole game in one session) and occasionally longer term games when people fix their servers.
You could maybe have fun but you should probably figure out pretender design before playing against human players.
Most of the items aren't that useful, there are a few that are extremely useful (mostly magic boosters and some cost effective items that everyone uses).

we either play by emails doing one turn/day or online with direct IP connect in 4-7 hours games. go into the steam group chat to, we start about 2 games/day.

>Can I have fun even if my pretender is completely fucked up? I have no clue how I should use it?
yes but most likely no. it's better for you to ask in this thread what's a good pretender for that nation.

>I saw there was an incredible amount of items, are they actually useful?

Trades are binding pretty much in 99.99% of games. If you break a trade agreement and your opponent provides a proof, you're probably going to be AI'ed.

Otherwise different communities do different things. /domg/ and Steam group enjoy backstabbing, so you should take their words with a pound of salt. dom3mods like binding agreements and sometimes make games with those.

TL;DR: depends on the game.

Surviving is about layering defences. For example, you could have Awe (forces the attacker to make a morale check in order to even attempt attacking, synergizes with fear that lowers morale), ethereality (physical attacks have 3/4 chance to be avoided), high defence (attackers have to win an attack roll to get their hit through), high protection (damage from those stray hits are reduced or negated) and high HP (you have to get unlucky very many times, and with regeneration on top, this off-chance is negated).

Most pretenders only have high HP out of box, their defence is effectively 0 (worse than militia - since each attack taken during combat round reduces defence by 2 and giants tend to be surrounded) and they won't have reinvigoration to negate fatigue and will soon start eating crits.

Some pretenders (like Earth Snake) are legitimately durable out-of-box (Earth Snake only has protection and crazy amount of HP to rely on, but in this case it's enough), but a pretender like Titan of War and Wisdom (Athena) isn't even though you might expect her to be, although with buffs and equipment she can become far more formidable than the snake. In general, with access to magical equipment and buff spells (self-buffs or buffs cast by some other mage), it's possible to make a pretender (or other powerful units like demon lords, angels or some recruitable units like Niefel Jarls) effectively invulnerable to mundane attacks. That requires quite heavy investment and It's incredibly difficult to protect against all types of magic simultaneously so these "supercombatants" aren't an enormous part of Dom4 meta, but they're definitely a thing.
>>
>>152869828
I'm pretty new so I'm gonna join in to ruin your game.

Iron Face: Also boosts natural protection to 20
Horned helm: Gives a gore attack
Wraith Crown: Gives Ethereality and have a bunch of skeletons at battle start
Horror helm: Gives fear
Spirit helm: Automatically chucks out lightning bolts

It depends is our favourite answer due to the range of choices which are viable depending on the situation.

>>152882731
Dominions score in pretender creation. Dominion 9 gives Awe effect, Dominion 10 a stronger one. However, it's worth noting it's very expensive and the usefulness of such a high score is limited for most nations so it probably isn't a good idea just for the purpose of cranking up your pretender's combat strength.
>>

Layering defences is important but it's worth remembering that there must not be any critical vulnerability. There isn't helmets that provide Awe outside artifacts (items that become available when you research Construction 8) and they're awesome in general, but suppose there was a more accessible helmet with awe and low to no protection: you'd get hit much less often but enter a high morale unit (an elite unit lead by a good general, or perhaps berserker or a mindless unit like a skeleton that'd ignore morale altogether): if you were relying on awe+fear combo, they'll just ignore it and decapitate your pretender if they have no head protection. And of course, open-ended rolls mean anything is possible so any unit could, in principle, pass the morale check, so you don't want to leave your eggs in one basket.

However, there are other ways to work around head protection than helmets. For example, Ironskin spell (castable by Earth 1 mages, researched at Alteration 3) increases the natural protection to 20 and that alone is sufficient to negate stray hits. Consequently, you might want to choose from a variety of helmets, ranging from Starshine Skullcap (mere 8 protection but 2 magic resistance and an additional level of astral magic) to Horned Helmet (21 protection, -1 defence, additional gore attacked) depending on your budget, magical paths available for crafting and what exactly you're facing. For example, some spells like Soul Slay and Disintegrate are pretty hard counters against SCs and stacking magic resistance is a way to survive, while Horned Helmet would be highly desirable if you want to make an "anti-thug" (unit designed to kill other thugs/SCs with overwhelming firepower) or if you just want extra protection to head and you have nature gems in abundance.

>>152884281
Pretenders are usually size 6 if they are going to be moving around with equipments, skeletons and most size 2 nerds have little to no chance of landing a head hit.
>>
>>152884240
>Ha, so I can give that one to a god who has awe, it'll stack and make him rout armies by himself?
It's not quite that good on its own unless you're getting up to pretty absurd levels of awe and fear but along with other strong defenses (see also: layered defenses) and some way to reliably get kills (to force morale checks) then yes that is one way to carve through a lot of cheap infantry. It does absolutely nothing against undead or constructs, though.
>>
>>152884005
>>152884240

>it's worth noting it's very expensive and the usefulness of such a high score is limited for most nations

Like if you're trying to domkill rush someone.
>>
>>152884460

Pretty much. It's why Supercombattants aren't a major thing in Dominions 4.

It's possible, if you've seen them coming, to script to hit the weaknesses of their defence. Counterwise, an SC the enemy doesn't expect can quite readily tip the balance of a war if it's used to wipe out a significant army.

It's just that gearing an SC is markedly pricier than changing mage scripting, so you more often see the former.

Being able to observe someone's scripting ahead of time is pretty vital once you get into midgame and past the "My prophet casts Divine Blessing. You are murdered by White Centaurs" level of sophistication that the early game tends to have. I know I've lost games in the past because I didn't have any indie scout provinces.
>>
>>152884757
Dom10 is still not all that much better than Dom9 in that situation. It's 100% to spread a candle rather than 95%. Which matters, yeah I suppose, but if the plan works with 10 it would most likely have worked with 9.
>>
Anyone know what e-mail llamabeast uses? If nobody has mailed him about the issue with llamaserver, I will. But I can't find his mail.
>>
>>152884757

It's almost never worth taking Dom10.

Dom 9 gets you the Awe, and you need to construct five temples to boost your temple check chance to 100%, which is fucking nothing.

If you do need the Awe to be more effective at damage mitigation you can just make a Horror Helm to soup up your pretender's Fear another couple notches, which has much the same effect.
>>
>>152885110

NAGOT FEL

Was the nagot fel error because the map simply couldn't find a starting position for us?!
>>
>>152884757
Or if you're using a monster pretender other than Earth Snake etc. There's potential uses, but taking dom9 just for the purpose of making a combat-worthy pretender is a fool's errand.

>>152884460
Well, assuming you're facing mundane units in the early game, it's feasible for an unit to become effectively invulnerable. Against non-elite troops, a recruitable unit like Vanjarl (265g) is pretty much there with just Vine Shield, Frost Brand, Mistform self-buff (the damage of any non-magical attack is reduced to 1 until Mistform breaks from a magical attack or an attack that deals 40 damage - a lucky roll even for a giant) and a bless.

Once magical counters start entering the fray, it's a lot more difficult. Infernal Prison/Claw of Kokytos are hard counters that send any unit directly to hell with no defence other than positioning, Life For a Life on the other hand does unresistable damage so a few casts will kill anything (I think being lifeless makes it unusable, but I'm not 100% on that). However, ignoring those blood magic hard counters, it is possible to account for almost anything (for example, Seraphim are effectively immune to fire, poison and lightning by default as well as having good self-buff paths and features like Awe 7 and Fire Shield 14 so it's a good starting point for covering the rest of the bases), but that's very expensive and with dedicated counters still a thing, it's not so great if the enemy can deploy them.
>>
>>152885856

It won't stop being useful then either because temples can be raided, but dom 10 last forever.
>>
what is even the purpose of having awe on your pretender.

if you kit him like a good SC he's not going to get killed by shitty units with 15 morale anyway.
and even against them what is a 50% of avoiding the hit gonna do? they are either piercing your protection or they are not. they are either giving your god affliction or they are not.
the damage per round window where 50% of the damage is going to be shadowed by your ring of regen, but 100% won't is pretty narrow and only relevant for few units, mostly giant sacreds.

your SC god is gonna die to skelespam, super good sacreds, likely with 20 morale, or demon troops, or mages, or anti_SC units, which likely will have decent morale.
i'd rather have F1 for fire shield so i can move through skeletons.

leave awe from dom9 to capital rushers and awake expander dragons ( which are overpriced).
>>
>>152885968
definitely. happens with too many thrones &/OR nations on certain maps.

definitely test the same configuration on your pc.
also it might only have a chance to appear, since the game seems to place thrones before capitals.

>>

Awe is best when it's spread out along many smaller units than one big one. Because each of those units will force a check on anything next to it. Personally, I want to see a hoburg unit with awe.

Are you literally retarded? Nobody disputes that. It's just that Fear 5 works in 0.0001% of cases. Just look up the description of Frighten in the dom inspector, and you'll see why it's A LOT better. Frighten can rout thugs, for fuck's sake.

>Fear 5 works in 0.0001% of cases.
Please calm the hyperbole.
>>
>>152892392
Of course it's a hyperbole, but we're talking about 1 unit with Fear 5 vs 1 unit that casts Frighten every turn in addition to other actions. Fear auras are useful if they're stacked anyway.

Stay mad scrub
>>
>>152891989

>>
>>152887690

That's not how it works. Awe triggers a morale check when something attempts to attack that specific unit in melee. There's no AoE component. If the thing fails it's morale check, the attack doesn't happen.

You're thinking of Fear, which IS an AoE, with a radius equal to the Fear value divided by five, and decreases morale of enemies by the Fear value, when units within it are called upon to make a morale check (such as for attacking something with Awe). Fear itself does not force morale checks, but CAN help a great deal making sure any morale checks that get made are failed.

You're probably still going to get buttblasted, only not have anything to do about it.

I recommend an awake expander in summod by the way. Your expansion is already great as Ermor so it's not really needed but since you get the death gem sites from having dominion and low pop in your territory you need as many provinces and as many candles as you can get.
>>
>>152898335

Nah. The thing is that in Dominions, pretty much 90% of everything is situational.

There's a reason that almost every question that gets asked along the lines of 'Which of X and Y should I do?' is answered with 'It Depends', and that's because without context, we really have absolutely no idea which of X and Y is the best option. We can guess, because X might have a lot more uses than Y, but that's not how you play the game.

We're really not just being flippant and sarcastic. It really does depend.

Why not take Eriue as an example instead?
Vanheim only has commanders and Valkyries that are glamoured.
>>
>>152904601
MA Ulm or MA Abysia.

Both are super straightforward, research evocations, expand with your heavily armoured troops, then spam either blade wind/magma bolts/magma eruption or fireballs and falling fires. This is by no means all that either nation is capable of, but as a beginner this is a good way to learn.

Magic is the most important part of the game, and magepower is the different between absolute humiliation and victory with no losses.
>>
>>152905121
Because Eriu is trash
>>
I've been watching some of Nuclearmonkee's videos about expansion and unit positioning and he puts a lot of time into counting out how many squares from the front his units are based on the AP of the indies in the province he's attacking. However I haven't seen him explain the logic behind that and I was hoping someone could educate me. I mean I know it's about getting first hit but I don't know how he arrives at the numbers he uses.
>>
>>152904110

It's just nice stuff to relax to, nothing weird about that.
>>
Well I'm as good as dead (again). Kill them all Ermor, kill them all.

Sadly, having taken fertility 3, I will likely leave behind some decent provinces.
>>
>>152906503
The amount of squares you can move is just AP/2 for horizontal/vertical and AP/3 for diagonal movement.
>>
>>152906771

We still have a cap battle ahead of us and as you most likely noticed my army there isnt exactly spectacular... plus half is starving.
>>
>>152907157
Right, but that still doesn't solve the whole problem. There seems to be a huge variance in where indie squads can spawn. Is there just a rough estimate that's used or what?

>>152907387
Yes, thank you. I started off with "illuminate" but that wasn't right either and just got lazy. "Illuminate for me" is probably what I was going for.
>>
>>152907249
Well even if I win the battle I'll lose the war. Man was no problem. Man and Ulm would have been fine. Man, Ulm, Ys, and you are way too much.

Freespawn is plentiful, the big issue is splitting the mages, didn't have anywhere near enough to split them into 4 fronts and still be useful (or 3, for that matter). I should probably have made a single big doomstack and charged whoever I liked the least head-on as final act, but too late now.
>>
>>152907373
You don't need to count squares for your expansion if you have a solid understanding of general combat mechanics. If you know which expansion parties kill what, and how to position troops, you'll be fine.

6 vanheres can take on 40 barbarians and win, but they can also get a lucky hit and die like idiots, 20 bats will die to anything, Mictlan needs to cover jaguars with slaves, etc.

If you can assess what can happen when one type of units engages the other, you'll almost never lose an expansion party.
>>
Well since nobody else wants to, I'll make a modnat game tomorrow morning.

No, it isn't.

Explain is the best word here in any case.

Elucidate means to make clear, while educate has a more formal connotation. And explain is a very boring word; you read lots of books anon-kun, use those big words. I promise the people that make fun of you aren't the people you want to be friends with anyway.

Typing from phone. We've got a small router at home and a few gamers hooked in with Ethernet cables because the WiFi is shit. I'm gonna have to disconnect one to free up a socket for the dominions server. I'll probably sabotage someone's network card and force them onto the wireless.

>>
>>152913461
Refer to merriam-webster for distinctions. Elucidate usually deals with issues where the basics are already known. It "sheds light on" with the purpose of illuminating small details and nuances. Anon-kun was not familiar with the basics.

>>152907373
It's pretty regular for any given poptype. The biggest cause of variance is size.

>>152907798
You don't need it, but you can squeeze some extra efficiency out of armies if you know how. It makes a big difference for expanding with 5 helhirdings versus 9, or whatever.

It is true. I'm not a backstabber, though. Mari attacked me back on turn 17, when I was still being mammoth'd by Caelum. I decided to let them keep the province they took, though, since they were fighting the skeletons. However, that proved to be an unwise decision, seeing as Mari attacked me once again on turn 30, taking a 240 income farm.
I didn't want this war to start, but I am definitely not going to sit back and watch Marignon take all my provinces one by one while they're pretending to fight Ermor.

Meh. Getting into air is hard since only your pretender can site search for it. This means that you basically lock yourself into a rainbow on a nation that already has very decent site searching just to get one of your summons.

Tengu are great, but they don't carry the game on their own, and while building your pretender to get access to them is fine, it's by no means the only way to play them, and I'm not even sure it's the best.
>>
>>152925249
Well if you think about you could argue that mass flight and fogwarriors really adds alot to any army, not excluding Shinu of course

But why an awake pretender, I have great success with kappa spam most of the time, hell with 2 prod you could mix in some glorious nippon steel in there. I think a good ol' titan would be a good enough replacement if someone doesn't want to go with an awake pretender.
>>
>>152932413
Because you get more provinces and you'll also always get the better provinces faster. You get more gold more quickly, forts down sooner, mages out sooner, etc. Taking an awake has a massive payoff that you need some serious benefit to not want (like a bless or expensive magic access etc).
>>
>>152932413
>>152932741
I'm not saying it's the only way to play and your titan is honestly fine; S4 and A4 are both pretty nice, but your god's actual value comes online much later and your nation is guaranteed to be smaller and weaker for a fair bit
