No, but I appreciate the idea. The problem isn't memory, as much as I like the idea of REM having 8k textures everywhere or whatever, we litterally cannot fill that space. Every texture in REM right now is 4096x4096, with the exception of the sphere, which is 9048^2 or something. Even with six maxed out ships on max res, we only use 3.5gb vram and 2-something gigs of ram. The issue is with performance on the physics engine, which isn't made by unity, but instead by a third party called Havok. They make the physics engine for Spengies and most games you see, including Half Life 2 and Garry's Mod. The only way to make that run better is to code our own, because they're fucking retarded and I hate them.

Or maybe they never intended Havok to run building games. Who knows.

And that's fine. Enjoy Empyrion. I am not trying to poach anyone. Just that I am booting up a server again, especially since we got a pretty good turnout last night, for just ~6h played. No skin off my back if anyone prefers Empyrion over Spengies. Do as you will.

Nevertheless, I am putting it here, in case anyone from the old crowd wants to come back. I already got a couple people that messaged me in the affirmative. So, that being said, I feel like any dismissive hostility or general claim that "everyone is doing X" is already flawed in the counterevidence.

You guys have fun. By all means. And I won't give a hoot if you decide to poke your head in later on, either. You're all welcome, eggmen.

Don't floating point errors usually only crop up at extreme distances?

If you plan on open space travel you could do what ED and SC do and make a FTL drive that doubles as a load-screen and instance changer and then center instances based on stellar bodies or the players location of they just dropped in empty space.
>>
>>152755779
The server is now online. The address has been edited into the Warbros Space Engineers group description.
>>
>>152761048
This actually has to do with acceleration, since there's no cap. If you accelerate for long enough, you reach c (speed of clang). If we capped it to something reasonable, this would take years to get to. As mass, energy and that other good shit is irrelevant right now, it's pretty easy to get to horrifying levels of floating point error. Once you need to factor diminishing returns and fuel into your craft, we probably shouldn't need a hard cap or drag. All we need is about 10000 units cubed to fit a mission into. The problems start at about double that from the origin point of the world. I was just shitposting some editor shenanigans because someone accused REM of ded.

I forget, but is there any actual inertia in space that can cause slow-down in propulsion or a max speed?

I always thought it was just "the more propulsion you apply to your mass and velocity, the faster you go over time.
>>
>>152762492
There's a base amount of particles per cubic kilometer in space. Disregarding gravity and all other forces, there is incredibly small drag. The kind that will slow down a 1 ton mass traveling at 0.5 c after several trillion years. This increases in nebulae (but only by a tiny amount, still incredibly small) and in solid bodies. Don't forget, kids, lithobreaking is a valid way of slowing down.
>>
>>152762492
>inertia in space to slow you down
Just so you know, we're all laughing at you.

But for the most part no. Solar winds, micrometeors, etc, but their effect would be negligible.

Alternate mechanism for storing/transferring numbers in webm
Got an idea for an anticipated carry mechanism as well once I get addition going.

I think I'll use the mechanism in last threads webm to enter the numbers and do the processing/adding this way. The problem with the carry in the last one was really high torque needed to trip several carries at once, since that would happen simultaneously (if it was fully built).

Supply lines? More like supply puzzle game. Resources on one planet can only be exported to one destination to upgrade the destination planet. You need multiple and fixed number of low level planets to support a high level planet, and it's all deterministic and no supply lines is involved.

Basically, yeah. I made this binary one awhile back but it was actually a lot easier than base 10 so far since you've only got 2 states to worry about.

Making the binary convert into a decimal display came with its own problems until I just gave up. So I'm trying again but doing base-10 from first principles.

doesn't seem like any company will ever get it right with vidya unless it's a straight up simulation without much gameplay like professional engineers do

It's a heat exchanger. Compress the gas, it gets hot, feed it through a radiator until it is room temp again but still compressed; when you decompress the gas it will become extremely cold. The cold gas is piped through a chamber where air inside the fridge circulates, the gas absorbs any excess heat in the chamber, cycles back to the compressor.

tl;dr version. Make gas cold outside fridge, pipe gas through fridge makes fridge cold, gas dumps heat outside.

Doc's version is so huge because he can't lay hands on any kind of refrigerant gas and is probably just doing it with compressed air, which requires extra apparatus to remove any water vapor before you can decompress it else you'll rapidly get ice clogging your system. Being in the arid desert would help things. But mostly, it's just funnier that it's so huge.

I just wonder why he installed the ice cube maker inside the machine that just expels the ice cube into a chute instead of making a chamber that gets cold like an icebox

I am not up on exactly how that would play out in a game but it would be interesting to have a system that can utilize a flywheel
>>
>>152777597
The Wild West had plenty of ways of storing food, and precisely zero ways of making ice on demand. According to the scripts ice tea was the one 20th century luxury Doc couldn't live without.

Looking at his 'fridge' it looks like he's just got a big tank of compressed air he lets reach room temperature, then lets it go in one big blast to rapidly chill something. The ice cubes could actually just be frozen chunks of water condensation, much like a hailstone.

You'll push 5-8fps at very best doing full screen color. The 84+CSE will manage only 3-4 since it kept the same Z80 as before. An 84+ doing the best it can with its 64×96(sic) monochrome will clear 40fps doing spritework. Depending on the engine you'll get 12-20fps trying to render or raycast. Most 84+ games will not operate properly on the Nspire 84+ emulator.

As I would have said at the time but couldn't, Spengies combat sucks mad dick mostly because you've got 1v1 at best. Small progress. The number storage gives off it's number to the counter on the right. When it goes from 9 to 0 again it flicks a switch, which puts a separate cog into the gear above for the 10's.

Just a matter of building your base inside an asteroid or with enough defenses to shoot them down. The recent patch changed meteroid behaviour significantly enough.

They're pretty damn lightweight and use vanilla textures. We used to have 140 mods, and it was fucking dumb. 1.8GB of data. We cut down on that and are now less than a third of the data. The game loads fast, and so does the G menu.

Question, isn't the speed capped by the speed of the exhaust? Ie: you use Mach 1 golf balls as a reaction mass, max speed is Mach 1.

Or am i wrong? I remember something on projectrho saying that for a RKV there is only su much you can accelerate before you start losing energy (of the impact) or something

You're wrong - consider Newton's third law of motion.

That once you reach the velocity of the reaction mass the reaction mass you leave behind doesn't move (ie: you expel golf balls behind you at Mach 1, you move at Mach 1, 1-1=0)

What no. You're still imparting force upon the golf balls. Before they were travelling at 100m/s in one direction, now they are travelling at 0 m/s. That means that they changed velocity, which means you did as well.

Oh.
K.

Another stupid question on everybody's favorite monster, relativity.

Assuming there are, in three different places of the same universe with the same laws of physics three different Einstens:
First one is our vanilla, Human Einstein, Einstein for friends and family, he can see photons (as we do).
Then we have Estein, poor guy, his eyes can only see haltfons, same as photons with the only difference that they move only at a mere 0.5c
Finally we have Ayynstein, he sees memethons, same as photons and halftons but they move at a whooping 2c!

Now, independently of each other, start doing their calculations that will give birth to their respective Theories of Relativity.

What happens?
A: Each Einstein reach the same conclusion, "their" speed of light is the maximum speed possible
or
B: Einstein does what he always did, Estein knells down crying because he discovered that everything he has always seen it's a shitty, watered down version of the real thing and Ayystein, dunno, explodes and/or dissipates into nothing i guess?

I play a ton of Space Engineers purely to fuck around with scripting. Does Empyrion have as much complex open-ended building (programmable blocks, auto-construction, so on and so forth) or is it focused more on the survival/base building? It actually looks pretty neat and for $15 it doesn't seem like a huge investment when most of the reviews show people with 100+ hours.
>>
>>152828021
it doesn't have any programming, it's more survival oriented

I also play for scripting. Empyrion has no moving parts, no automation, no scripting, no nothin'

What it does have is good survival, good blanets, and good multiplayer. With a bunch of friends Empyrion is amazingly fun, although perhaps lacking in content.

You can build bigger better complex things in Spengies, but building is more fun in Empyrion.

Theres slidy fun times to be had, since you can do it just fine in the single player testing area.

But in multiplayer, which is basically the whole game, any slidy fun times are ruine dbecause of latency.

Shape the ship like a bullet with the nacells mirrored along either side of it, use all of the extra space left by removing pointlessly spindly sections to double the number of impulse engines and expand the ships shielding, since federation ships seem to lean heavily on superior shield technology to protect their ships from harm. Stack the decks up on top of each other vertically from the rear of the ship to its nose, again to increase how much can be fit inside the hull. Improve redundancies, redundant shielding system, redundant phaser arrays(4 as opposed to 2) and the same for torpedoes. Coat the hull in thicker plates to protect vital systems and reinforce the ships skeleton so it won't fall apart if structural integrity fields fail or weaken. Install a system which momentarily cuts power to consoles in the event of massive power surges so screens stop exploding in peoples faces. Install cabinets with basic hazard gear in sections where radiation, toxic gasses, coolant, plasma, etc might leak and come into contact with crewmembers. Install emergency batteries for life support systems and the transporter so that 1: The transporter doesn't shit itself in time of need so often and 2: So someone in engineering can't just shut off life support to the rest of the ship. Emergency power supplies cannot be shut down until an emergency is ended or they're completely drained.

Vaginas are nice, and women be pleasing to my eye, but when you start to get into that engineering mindset, you look at relationships and wonder if all that trouble you're going through is worth it for the end goal, and is there a better way? Logic dictates you could find a man as dorky and easy to please as yourself.

Hilariously, it goes the same way with female engineers. They get sick of idiotic men and their frustrating bullshit and thing women will be easier and less stressful. They couldn't be more wrong, though.

>>152869367
Big difference between the classroom and the industry. A lot of students decide they don't actually want to become full-blown engineers (important note, an engineering degree doesn't make you an engineer) and instead use their qualifications for a huge variety of technical roles, everything from steel detailers to city planning.

And for full disclosure, the male engineers are just as weird, mostly, unless they're 50+ with decades of experience and usually are running their own firms and have evolved into your more stereotypical businessman/manager.
>>

>>
>>152869084
Nah, they're based on archetypical personalities, which given that patterns of child raising are pretty much standard cultural nonce, and are usually pretty predictable, also combined with current cultural trends.
Stereotypes exist because people have observations about other people.
Human beings are simple and predictable when observed from a collective standpoint.
>>
>>152870335
Stereotypes exist because people take a small piece of a person's personality or a single behavior pattern, distort it and turn it into a caricature, and then pretend that such a twisted example describes a group of people completely.

It just annoys me when people pretend to know everything about a group of millions of people while sitting in their basement and not having contact with another human for 6 months.
See, this was another dumb stereotype.

What you're thinking of is what stereotypes appear to be, however, if you grill someone on the specifics, oftentimes you will find that it paints a very good picture of a personality archetype.

Stereotypes serve an important evolutionary purpose, they allow for quick transmission of collective consensus on groups alien to the individual.
Adapted and used correctly they are quite beneficial in societal managment, even now.
>>
>>152871771
No, 85% of the time my assumptions about that person are completely wrong. This has happened nearly every time I've ever met anyone and tried to figures stuff about them out through stereotypes and preconceived notions.

Let's say it again
People who regularly wax poetic about not setting foot outside for a year at a time are claiming to know how people are. You don't ask a bus rider for car advice.
>>

>No, 85% of the time my assumptions about that person are completely wrong.
Then you are really bad a disseminating what is hollywood bullshit about stereotypes, and what is actually part of personality types.
I would wager that you also aren't good at reading people as well.

Not to mention stereotypes are a tool for base analysis, nothing more. You seem to think that their proper usage is for forming opinions, it's more to get a feel of someone and build a basic personality profile so that you can predict their behavior and reactions, then build a proper one later, once they open up to you.
Oftentimes people are composed of multiple stereotypes amalgamated, but this does not make them any less useful.

Applying autism to social relations is easy.
People are simple.
Most people don't switch how they behave completely depending on who they're talking to.
Most people don't have that much "going on".
Those that do are often the interesting ones, because they're less predictable.

Oh, if Proxima b has complex terrestrial life, then it probably has at least one species that has something resembling a cloaca large enough for a human dick to fit in

Still, not really comparable to anything a human would feel

But what does it matter, the chances of any of us ever interacting with any lifeform from Proxima b is even lower than the chances of there being intelligent life there

Well students can't really be "certified engineers" but someone on their final semester? Who cares. And I don't know how you do it in burgerland but here to graduate the student must work for atleast 6 months on a related job. (To graduate, not to be "certified"). And working on laboratories, doing research or working on student run companies helps getting better positions. I still did not get your point. Certification change brain chemistry somehow?

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would be dropped to be replased either by "k" or "s", and likewise "x" would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be dealt with later. I'll be honest: I got two complaints and ten appreciative comments. Meteors are a threat, they make life less easy, and I understand that they are annoying/dangerous, but I also feel confirmed in adding them as an additional gameplay factor has benefits.

I don't want to make a huge discussion out of this. I understand that it is a controversial topic, and there will always be people who thoroughly dislike them.

My suggestion is building a base inside a hollow 'roid and dealing with it, by virtue of heavy armour shields, energy shields and turrets. As a look into the future, the changed meteor behaviour will reach stable soon enough.

They are already changed the meteors, old ones use to hit really really near your position, and even follow you when you move, the new ones have a wider area, and when it start, it keeps in place.

Meteors were actually shit before, you needed a wall of turrets, and even that sometimes was not enough.

>>152946210
Do you have the high velocity weapons mod on the server? I like it for the tracer effects and longer range on gatling turrets, giving them a cone of fire too. The only problem is it upsets the balance of any other weapons mods around and breaks rifles because it wants to use special snowflake ammo.
>>
>>152947000
seems that the time fluctuates, could be 10 minutes or 5, as for the distance, i remember old meteors being like 20 in total, all covering a 10x10 big block area, and falling for a few seconds, the speed seems like 50+m/s

Now they are way less, i saw and count 5 at most. the area is as big as an asteroid, and they spawn all at once.

Step 1: Have crafts be multi-block entities instead of single-block
Step 2: Have physics apply to entire craft
Step 3: Have an object that tries to lock entity to other entity, whether moving or static
Step 4: Try very hard to not make the server hiccup because "how do I convert this multi-block entity into a single thing?
Step 5: Fail
Step 6: Fail very hard
>>
>>152950869
So the only remaining are connectors.
Since merge blocks could fuck up everything with the connection force, you have to place them off perfectly, and then turn then on, and wish that they insta lock.
If not, connectors without force.

One of the crashes was about locking a landing gear while having another ship with a connector.

The "small doors" are upgrade slots, and do not serve as a conveyor door.
Inversely, proper conveyor doors do not serve as upgrade slots.

>some /mcg/ anon's friend submitted forge, the dominant modding API as a open source case study
>their professor said it was amateur at best.
>mojang is just so retarded that a plant would look better than them
??????
forge isn't made by mojang, and is not affiliated with them, altough the lead author(lexmanos) is in frequent contact with them
also, a modding api is literally a hack on top of the original game code to add (thin) abstractions so mods are compatible/can interact with each other etc.
it's never going to be nice, clean code, unless the game is designed from the ground up with this in mind(the majority of modding apis are made by modders, i. e. third partys rather than the original developers).
Furthermore, showing off the code of anything based on minecraft is just silly, the code is going to be terrible, because it has to interact with the minecraft codebase. The nicest code i could think of would be small bukkit plugins as bukkit is fairly high-level.
And forge works great, minecraft has great mod support(altough certainly not from mojang), much better than most games.
>>
>>152971172
It was more of an example that minecraft modders, who mojang has hired plenty of, including former forge devs, are a bit retarded.

And forge definitely does not work great.
Or at least according to people who know what they're talking about in /mcg/.
I also tried modding for it once, and it is a bit of a clusterfuck.
