Honestly lower tiers are too punishing for new players with how much plane losses hurt. A single lost fighter battle in t4 means that you will now lose every single fighter battle for the rest of the match.
At t5 you get more planes but still a punishing amount can be lost. At t6 you have more lee-way, its also where AA ramps up. At t7 you have a much larger reserve, but its simply not enough when you go against t9 ships regularly.
CVs are the most powerful ships in the game in the right hands and the weakest ships with the wrong hands. The skill floor is too high and the early game too punishing.

If this was a purely WW2 game then they could open up with ranger like at t4/t5. But its not.
Many of these balancing issues could be solved if they just gave every CV unlimited planes and then balanced AA around that.

Because a DD will not get the spotting. A Shimakaze wouldn't spot the enemy Yamato but his team's Yamato can, so even if he does go and spot, the exp would be given to the Yamato instead since the Yamato has been spotting since the start of the game. Any cruisers firing would get spotted by that Yamato too, which leaves only DDs to be spotted.

What they need to give DD is a super huge view range while giving BBs less, just like in WoT. It's really stupid to take it from WoT, but I find that it would work here. It's overall kinda the same, but much simpler and very clear. Spotting depends entirely on concealment value, no ambiguous % bushes, smoke and sonar/radar are temporal and clear straightforward mechanic. Kagero and Shima are the only ships in the game which literally cannot see targets at their max weapons range.

Their view range is 18 km, beyond that enemies simply do not get rendered, you can't set them as targets, you do not get the torp lead indicator.
Which handily makes the 20 km Type 93s even mroe useless than they already are, unless you get the view range module instead of the stealth module.

A DD with 3km view range will only view a BB at 3km even if the BB gets a 100km detection range. If someone else is spotting the BB, the DD would still spot it at 3km. No one gets a 3km view range, but it's still significant for a BB.

Spotting = view range, which is the gray cone on your minimap. As long as someone is at their detection range (eg. 18km) and is inside your view range (eg. 18km), you will spot them at 18km. If your view range is like the previous example, 3km and the enemy detection range is 18km, you will only spot them at 3km, not at 18km because you don't have the view range.

It's a very different kind of playstyle to Fuso's comfortable 'hang back a bit and blast things with twelve guns'

Yeah, if I remember correctly she only has two upgrades that aren't just a insignificant number of 25mm AA guns, so with the hull you shouldn't really have any other trouble getting the other one which I think is just a small speed upgrade. she's pretty cruisy as soon as you get that first hull
she doesn't really have any areas that she's particularly bad at, she has pretty solid maneuverability, good guns, and a good health pool. about her only issue is that her armor isn't amazing, I found myself bouncing a decent amount of fire with angling, but if you start giving flat angles you're just going to get ruined.

Nagato is most effective in teh 12 - 14 km area, or right in sombodies's face.
Just be aware of the torps.

She doesn't eat citadels all the time, it's a matter of angling properly and avoiding long-range 16" hits.
Your secondaries are actually able to punish overconfident cruisers and DDs.


All of this is of course worthless when your team simply decides to look at your solo YOLOcharge from teh blue line.
What I meant with Fus and hanging back a bit is that Fuso just plain dies to citpens at shorter ranges, and she does have the speed to keep the slow fat burgerbotes at range.

You can kind of do that with US Cruisers, and probably the Russians if you really wanted but I've never seen anyone bother, but these days there's just not that much point because of the lack of CV's and mediocre rewards for shooting down planes.
Better off just going standard builds with a focus on main guns and burning down everything with HE in them instead.
Also Nagato's firing arcs aren't too terrible, so you can get fire off if you're quickly fishtailing the rear out between the enemy salvos.

It seems pretty decent so far, I've heard conflicting things about the T9/10 so they could be pretty dodgy, but most of the line seems actually quite good.
If you like BBs you can't really go wrong with either of the other lines too, the early tier ones are pretty mediocre but around T5 and onwards they're both pretty fun for different reasons.
If you want to try cruisers then the Jap line is pretty much good for the entire way, the Russians are also really strong.
