Dos was fucking great and there's a ton of stuff in it that I wish would make a comeback.

The size of Jumbo relative to all the villages that came later, and the way it started as just a couple huts in the jungle and then visually grew into a proper town as you played through it and helped the village develop. The different seasons were kind of cool, and for some reason they completely dropped the whole system of quest organization where you could filter quests to see only the ones that meet certain criteria.

Plus Dos lets me be the biggest MH hipster I know because I pre-ordered the import and got to spend spring break 2006 trying to get KDDI to take my credit card to play online

Anyone who complained about G-Rank because they thought monster HP was "bloated" was an idiot.

G-Rank was bad because there wasn't any meaningful reason for it to exist outside of High-Rank, and it's basically just a reset button back to the beginning of High-Rank to do it all over again. Getting to the end of G-Rank doesn't feel any different than it was when you were at the end of High-Rank.

Hypers and Deviants are theoretically better, but in practice I couldn't really blame anyone for thinking they dropped the ball (in that Hypers often don't actually feel tougher to kill than their standard counterparts, and Deviants use an upgrade system that's just transparently padding out the amount of grind you need to do to be done).

I mean they make a token effort, sure, but all of that shit is pretty fucking weak justification for basically making people go all the way through High-Rank, and then making them go all the way through what is basically High-Rank: 2% Different, 200% Grind Edition.

For the most part it's just a treadmill. The monsters get more HP and hit harder, and your Defense and Attack scale up at basically the same rate. The monsters get tiny alterations to their moveset, and you get blasted in the face with Armor Skill diarrhea until you have to basically actively try not to have an extra 3-4 skills to close whatever gap the altered monster movesets might have created.

With Hypers and Deviants in Generations, obviously your gear does get stronger, but it feels like the difference between pre-Hyper/Deviant gear and post-Hyper/Deviant gear is a lot smaller than the difference between pre-Hyper/Deviant monsters and post-Hyper/Deviant monsters.

"The monsters are 50% stronger, and your gear makes you 50% stronger" is pointless bullshit that shouldn't exist.
"The monsters are 30% stronger, and your gear makes you 10% stronger" is actually a video game with a difficulty curve.

Generations gets a lot closer to the latter than G-Rank games do, in my opinion.

If you wanna stray from the usual list, and are okay with being like 5% weaker, I recommend Tetsu. Amatsu GS can be pretty good potentially too, but its overall worse than tigrex and tetsu.

So I just tried 3U on 3DS, first monster hunter game.
I feel like I'm having a stroke. Tried to test weapons out on goats and missed like 99% of all my swings.

You eventually get used to it. Also the deer move quickly and are small targets; they're good training ground, though if you're using a slower weapon (lance, GS, gunlance) then they can be really frustrating to try and kill.

i've only used about half of the weapons in Gen so far. I suck with gunlance, HH, DB and i can't remember the last time i touched gunner weapons in MH.

I'm not great with lance either, but i still like to use it occasionally.

I still find randoms to do 140s with in 4U, and they are actually good for the most part. With Gen, you'll find yourself waiting for the game to get harder while burning yourself out on the 100+ gathering quests mixed in with the hunting quests. No endgame elder is difficult at all, Alatreon comes close but it's so neutered from 3U and even Tri it's not the same monster. Don't even get me started on how lame the multi-monster quests you have to do to unlock HAs are, they don't even spawn more than one monster at a time. It's lame.

I know this won't happen, but what do people think of a more story focused monster hunter game where you become the ace hunter like you do in every other game, but you then abandon the Guild and creates your own organization that hunts monsters. You then can do micro/macro management of your base and/or village and compete against the Guild and other groups online for contracts.

Nah, I play 4U for something that actually resembles challenge. Gen is too easy, the only quests that would be considered difficult are only because they have a constantly respawning bullldrome in an arena-type map. There's no way to make it challenging without actively gimping yourself (ie using GL).
