YandereDev was right.

Either make a casual thing in Construct Classic (I think it's free) or get yourself GameMaker, which I recommend for 2D beginners anyway.

Unless you're feeling ambitious, then maybe you could try Love2D, which is free but probably more difficult to get into.
>>
>>152651876
Okay, fail, let's try again

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I love character creators and always wanted to make my own with 2D art. Similiar to portraits in JRPGs or VNs, and I was wondering: what program would you recommend to make quite the detailed character creator in?

I only know a bit of Ren'py that's all.

The fomori warrior has now all sprites except death sprites, which is why it has infinite hp at the moment. It's hard as balls to fight against so I might have to adjust it a bit or just have it very end game enemy or something.
>>

>>152651973
>>152651981
Well, he's not wrong.
>>
>>152651958
Thanks for the suggestions! Are there tutorials for programming a character creator in GameMaker?
Not sure how I'd start, maybe it's a bit too advanced for a beginner
>>
>>152652078
You'll need to make the features, eyes nose mouth hair head, etc sperate objects, and have controllers for each one to make it change type, size, position etc. And I doubt there is a tutorial
>>
>>152652078
Do you want the characters to be animated?

If not, it's waaaaay easier. The process is essentially drawing sprites to the screen in a certain draw order. You'd have slots in the character for hair, eyes, clothes, etc etc. Then store all the variations in a sprite sheet or separate images, and display one sprite for each slot.
>>
>>152651910
The problem with yandere dev is that he always hated any critism, unless you worded it as softly as possible. It has also been confirmed multiple times he sued to shill his own threads on /v/ and attack himself while forgetting to get the trip off, just so the discussion continued or someone would feel the need to protect him.

Good for him that he succeeded, but he is a crybaby, like everyone else is on an anonymous imageboard. The different between this place and reddit, is that people there tend to hide their feelings and just type feels good shit for the karma.

> another dev driven out by 4chan

The problem with devs is is that when they get a certain amount of attention they enter the "honeymoon" phase. Everyone loves them, everyone wants to be their friend. But then the board culture kicks in and you get trolled, shit on by randoms and bullied. So the dev or any other person that got attention, goes into shock. They want to continue being special, while avoiding being bullied, but they fail to realise that the way 4chan works, the nail that sticks out gets hammered the most.

It happens again and again with different devs.
>>
>>152652078
Not really but it's actually really easy to work out the logic once you get into the hang of working in Game Maker.

Game Maker has a free trial that never expires (it just watermarks your .exe exports), so if you aren't gonna pirate or buy the program then you can always just use the trial until you decide you like it (or not).

Here, I'll send you a Game State template I gave to another anon last week. I'll even make a quick sample demonstrating graphics swapping. Check back in like half an hour (use that time to install GM if you don't already have it)
>>
>>152652249
I personally hate his game and I'm glad he's fucked off for good
>>
>>152652249

You're also forgetting that YandereDev got attacked pretty hard. He got doxxed and his code was released to the public. Uncalled for honestly.
>>
>>152651876
Can you do it in Ren'py?
Usually its better to just use what you are already familiar with so you can make progress fast. If renpy cant do it then maybe use something python based? I personally would use Unity but only because I know the engine very well.
>>
>>152652245
Nooo, not animated. Basically like those character makers people make in Flash, but Flash sucks and I want to make lots of different options for characters.

>>152652314
That sounds awesome!! Thanks a lot, anon
>>
>>152652009
I dont visit /addg/ often but hot damn

Judging from this webm, this looks like it has the potential to be something very great.

I would fucking play the shit out of this.

>>

>He got doxxed
Brought that upon himself by saying he's someone people would know and hate if they knew who he was. Fucking idiot.
>>
>>152652009

Fucking sick bro
>>
>>152652393
I'm not too good with Ren'py and can only do really basic stuff with it.
Do you think it's hard to make something like this in Unity? Basically it's supposed like those Flash character makers people make (but Flash sucks) and I want to make it a bit mroe advanced.

Lately I saw some webm of a character creator for a game called "Jack-o-Nine-Tails 2" or something and they made a basic character creator in unity I think. I wonder if it's manageable for a beginner

>>
>>152652009
Looking great, It almost looks like a anime fight choreography, but now I feel Noir's animations look a little bit too stiff compared to his.
>>
>>152652369
Maybe so, but this is what you can expect from this place. You need to keep as much of your personal information away from it. If you get doxxed, it means you slipped and you have yourself to blame. Having your code released is something you can't avoid I guess if you release a demo publically, but again. Who cares if your code is released for a fucking pre alpha prototype of a prototype? If the dev is really afraid, you can always obfuscate.

And bullying, well, you shouldn't give people a reason to bully you. Like I said yanderedev has always been very very sensitive. He used to get triggered at the smallest of things. People noticed it and used to do it just to do it. Again, it's the nature of the board. People enjoy their banter here and if you have a thin skin and let them get to you, you will be overrun. Then you throw a tantrum and leave. Are there better communities than 4chan? ofcourse there are. Good for him that he found his place, but I wish people stopped making it seem like they deserve somekind of special treatment and that THEY alone got bullied. If you spend some time here, you know pretty damn well what to expect.

>>
>>152652564
Should be easy enough to do in like, a day once all the art is made. Unity's UI system is pretty trivial to use these days. The reason why there's so many flash ones is because of how easy they are to make.

Unless you want to do something really fancy like Oblivion's face creation system for a whole body. That would take a lot of effort.

The only questions which get answered are the questions you can literally answer by looking at the unity manual and reading the description of the thing they are asking about, or by checking a specific checkbox on a component.

Evax is the type of person who would get his day ruined if among 1000 posts of sucking his dick, one single person said "you're retarded".

He came to 4chan after Gaia, and he tried to "impress us" and "gain our recognition" by making a game that "caters to us". He didn't realize that he can't please everyone here though, and he soon found out that not everyone here will suck his dick, but people over at reddit and other communities will, so of course he moved away from here. And good riddance I say, even Fish has more backbone than him, I definitely don't want any association with those sort of people.

Noir's animations are somewhat old and those fomori animations are new so that kind of explains it. I actually wanted to give the fomori just 4 frames long walking animation but it looked like NES megaman so I just went with 8 and now while it looks good(?) it clashes with lots of enemies that only has like 4 or 6 frames walk animations.

I watched this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJOUTSy0fQI tutorial one day and it made me understand animation bit better. I guess I'll be remaking some of Noir's sprites when I get time.
>>
>>152653895
I'd even say that it's easy to ask people who shit on you for constructive criticism. If they don't, ignore. I think people who try to seriously interact in this place seriously need to learn to ignore feedback that isn't worth the attention.

If someone shit's on a game, I'll take it, as long as it's reasoned. Otherwise, it gets ignored.

Thats not the point. He was pretending to be someone he wasn't on 4chan, while saying "oh but i'm this very special person, but you will never find out". Then people found out that he's an insecure faggot with a baggage of shit he keeps whining and complexing about.

If you'e pretending to be someone yo uaren't, it means you are trying to hide yourself away. Good, but don't bring your real self as some "sekrit" "super COOL" human being that others would be lucky to know. Because then people will use it against you. This is what happened to him. It could all of been avoided.

You can link your information here all you want, as long as it doesn't have the possibility of causing damage for you. It's safe to say if you don't get triggered every second post that people make, nobody will want to bother to doxx you or cause trouble for you.

Do you have any idea of the game I'm developing right now? It'll blow your fucking mind, anon. You'll look back at this conversation, when with a subtle hint in a progress post of mine, everything will click in your head. All the little pieces will fall into place, and you'll slowly realize.

"Th-This?? That anon was developing THIS?!"

And you'll fall on your knees. You'll fall on your knees in awe, amazed at such progress, and how, in comparison, you shall be a nodev your whole life. And suddenly won't matter anymore. After a few hours of shock and awe, you'll retrace your steps, you'll look into everything you've done so far and you'll realize. That it won't matter anymore. Because everything you've done up until this point was w o r t h l e s s.

On the other side of the fence there's goog's friends who give "10/10 a thrilling psychological game" reviews. Let's not pretend for a second that reviews ever actually matter, and if your game goes from 100% positive to 70% negative with just 3 reviews then you have bigger problems than some guys being asses.

Should hopefully be enough to guide you to add the rest of the features.

As it currently is programmed, you should be able to add more frames to each image. If you need to re-position a piece, tweak the x,y coordinates for the first 3 lines of objController's Draw event.

objMain spawns the rectangle controllers, assigning a "myID" value to each of them so they know which pieces of the outfit to modify. The rest of the code is in the Step and Draw events of objArrow.

If you need to change the screen res (I upscaled a really small res, sorry) just tweak the Window_Set_Size functions in objMain Create, objMain Step, and the view/room size in the two rooms, InitRoom and Level_1.

You're seeing an optical illusion mate. Due to areas of high and low contrast, some parts of the image might look larger or smaller at a glance, but if you zoom the fuck in you will see that the pixels are uniformly sized. They could smooth out some of the jaggy bits to reduce the illusion but that seems like more of a polish thing.

I am very curious how games will look 100 years from now when we have mind reading technology which can literally take your ideas and put them in a computer as a finished product.
It will be funny to see artfags and codefags to suck cocks on the street for crack and money while the idea guys who were always the laughing stock, will be making billions.
And the best irony is, that it will be the programmer fags and art fags who will make this technology happen for the ideafags to use.

Art and coding requires actual abstract thinking and imagination. What people fail to realize, is that both are actually Idea Guys, but with the mental capacity to actually apply their ideas.

If that technology comes to foot, 'Idea Guys' will output confused, contradictory systems, while actual devs will output complex, supermassive visionary pieces.

Mind reading technology could not make your dream game in a quick scan of your brain. You'll have to focus, very clearly, on every aspect of the game.
Once the Ideatron of the year 2200 knows you want to make a procedurally generated racing game or what-fucking-ever, it won't be able to make it because even deep down you do not know how your dream game works (unless you have filled out your design document with obsessive amounts of detail).

If you don't want it to do all the work, fill out stuff automatically, and shit out a nonsense game, you'll need to feed the Ideatron incredibly precise information by focusing over and over and over.
You'll need to tell it what every track piece looks like, what the odds of it being generated are, what every car looks like, what its statistics are, what happens when 2 cars collide, what's the max length, how your special items work, what the background trees look like, etc.

Imagine explaining to a very curious kid why the sky is blue. You tell the kid how light works and how human eyes work, and every single time the kid asks "Why?" and eventually you run into stuff you (or science in general) can't explain.
It'll be like that but about game mechanics and with "How do you want this to happen" instead of "why". Okay, here's the U-turn track piece, what size in pixels do you want it? Okay, what color? What frequency? What are the variations like?

Sure, the Ideatron would give an unfathomable boost to the dev process. But dev at the speed of thought is still dev. And from the perspective of yesterday's game devs, Game Maker and Unity are already Ideatrons. For fuck's sake, you can make a game using drag and drop. DRAG AND DROP. WITH LITTLE LEGOS OF CODE.

If you cannot make a game with Game Maker, you have an issue the most advanced Ideatron will never solve for you.
NEVER EVER.

Hey writefags, your game is about a magic user. You can't decide what gender you want your player character to be, Dating sim elements are completely off the table, but you were thinking about having female party members introduced in the second half that wouldn't be attracted to your player, but at least that minimal tension of being different genders.

But then you think about making the player character a woman, because this undeniably placates feminists, tumblrinas, Bechel Testers, etc. and men don't care & will play whatever gender they're given. But now you're not sure about the previously mentioned female characters also being female, or if they should be genderswapped.

Wat do

Make a game where you play a drunk girl walking home from a bar/rave.

"Have to" avoid drunk frat guys, homeless people, rabid dogs, sewer tentacle monsters, passing ufos, handsy cops, etc.

Make it like one of those running mobile games where you have to make your character move to the side and jump or slide.

Except the girl stumbles forward instead of runs. And sometimes the controls change direction randomly so left is right and vice versa.

Harder difficulties include less clothes or more drunk.

And to make the game a bit longer, every so often you pass a bar. If you go in, you get a multiplier to your score but also stumble more.

End game is her reaching home or maybe just passing out on her lawn and some random enemy comes in from behind and rapes her.

Trying to flesh out progression paths. Decided to give the player the ability to augment individual skills (there are 4 skills per weapon type). Upgrades drop as loot like other items in-game, and can be put into individual skills to augment their effects at the player's choosing.

This is going to be separate from player stats, which will be global modifiers and also pertain to stuff like health, movement speed etcetera.

I hope you're still there

I went through this tutorial several times until I got it right
https://youtu.be/MV4XRgmTynY
keep in mind it's for rigging for animated films, not games, so there are some things you have to do differently, like having all the joint chains attached to the hips vs constraining them

the rig I ended up with was a lot simpler than what I built following the video. I left out IK/FK blending and went IK only since I didn't really need it and it was taking a lot of time to redo when I messed it up
The antennae, spine, and wings are spline curves with a few skinned controls, and the head uses an aim constrain with a tilt control for the neck

Ledge grabbing (purple box is ledge check sensor, green box is floor sensor so you don't end up grabbing ledges that are 1-2 tiles from the ground), and fixed some stuff with my FSM implementation.

it looks good, not groundbreaking but neat. I suggest you steal the "vaults" feature, it's a really cheap way to liven up procedural levels

it's just a large set of manually designed dungeon features that get placed if they fit (plus some random chance)

the grass, bridges, L shaped caves and wooden supports in my webm are all placed this way, I didn't have to specialcase anything which is fantastic

ladders are procedural though since the generator makes sure every area is reachable by the player

The "story" I've had in my mind has changed a bunch over time, so he too has gone through a few different ideas. Hell, originally he was supposed to be a digitized guy in cyber space, much like Kabuki Quantum Fighter.

At the very least, I figure he can remove his helmet much like Mega Man.

That would be a pretty fucking rad though, I want to make games based off the stranger, lesser known NES games, like Street Fighter 2010, Kick master, dragon fighter, or low G man.

I never understood that, you got indie devs copying zelda, mario, metroid, megaman and shit but man there's some really wild shit out there if you dig deeper.

Either way, I look forward to watching your progress too, anon

First make sure your sprites are set to the right filter and compression settings. Next you have to make a script that ensures your orthographic camera is the correct aspect for your resolution, or better yet use 2 to 5 cameras and some render textures in order to force it to render at one resolution and then scale up everything uniformly at the end, and do that separately for UI and effects etc. You also need to make sure that your camera and all your sprites are set to snap to the pixel grid in the LateUpdate so that they don't jitter all over the fucking place. Basically it takes a shitload of work to get something as simple as >>152673095 to not fuck up horribly.

I was originally inspired by one of my favorite NES titles, Metal Storm (and Gravity Man stage from Mega Man 5), and I wanted to have a similar gravity gimmick. However, because I wanted to put more emphasis on melee-range combat and maneuverability, I ended up dropping it (because I figure it's better for games with shooting controls, and it'd limit directional inputs for melee attacks) in favor of the hookshot idea instead.

Thanks for the kind words, anon.

Also, if you need any inspiration for level gen that don't follow the classic room-and-corridor formula, I HEAVILY recommend you check out the following:
-Brogue's level generation algorithm, it's explained here.

The game is open source, too, so you can look up the code for yourself.

a strategic acquisition of soundcloud by spotify would be worth 1B, probably. All of a sudden spotify could change soundcloud's TOS so that they could put any music on spotify without having to pay the artist anything - maybe even start proposing deals where the artist pays THEM to put their music on spotify. If soundcloud's media player is proprietary, that might be worth it. There are lots of reasons.

Hey Guys,

Working on a Tactical RPG Couch Competitive game that mixes Final Fantasy Tactics with Football (as the end goal). Each side starts with their respective ball, first team to get their ball to the opponents other side scores points, getting a kill gets you one point, etc, etc.

I've implemented attacking and taking damage into the game. Currently, each character has a range of damage their attacks do. Melee characters hit a bit harder than ranged do, magic users have a higher range of numbers possible than physical attacks do.

If you were to play this, would you prefer an option that allowed you to reduce the amount of randomness in the range of numbers possible. IE: If you turn that feature on, a knights attack always hits for 65, rather than a number from 58-72?

Same thing with miss chance on things like attacking, passing, hand offs of the ball, etc, etc

Generally, I think randomness in a strategy game reduces the overall amount of strategy. BUT the randomness as well gives the game a sense of fun and lightness.

I love SRPG games. Always have. But I generally think "kill all of the enemies" makes for a boring objective in a strategy game. Chess reduces strategy to the single goal of take out one piece, and how it is played is vastly different and more nuanced than if it was simply about take out all of the oppositions pieces. It's better due to an objective that both sides share.

Framing it in American football of sorts makes it so people are familiar with how the game would work at a glance, and its frivolous and fun. The objective is immediately clear to a new player.

Plus
>video james

Really, all you have to do is say that adventuring is dead because the great adventures solved all the worlds fantasy problems, the king has hosted a tournament for a new sport, Fantasy Handegg, adventurers are coming out of retirement to play for money.

My game is turning out to be very story heavy. Each day in gameplay is split between Daytime/Nighttime. During the daytime you are able to interact with NPCs and advanced NPC stories. During the night you are either able to advance NPC stories or do Mission planning (the game has resource management elements).

I am thinking of what is the right balance to strike. What percentage of nights should one have to spend on missions/research/training in order to scrape by on required missions? 30%? 50%?

What is a good story/gameplay balance?

Someone gave me FL Studio, LMMS and OpenMT as good programs for audio creation. FL Studio looks like a mess for a shitter like me, but it obviously let me create lots of things but when I looked THAT price .... uh.

So I am pretty much sticking to LMMS for now, the other program for some reason randomly crashes in my computer anyway. Do you guys know if there is anything similar for smartphone that is worth to mention?

Havrest Moon Series / Stardew Valley / That Alchemist Harvest Moon may have some pointers on this. Generally, time doesn't lock you into anything, but nighttime is shit for foraging because shops are closed and you can't see shit. Depends a lot on what you want. JRPG in classic style is pretty much a template for Gamemaker and the forums are full of resourcs for it (and a ton of kids just wanting to make DBZ games).

If you want something more modern it really depends on what language you speak. UE4 is a good choice for anything 3D if you are unsure about your skills, and both Epic and the community are probably among the most helpful out there. CryEngine is often forgotten on here because of it's lack of resources but it offers quite a wide array of options.

No what I mean is each night you need to decide between 2 things, as you can only do one per night.

Interact with an NPC or plan a mission. There are required missions, two per chapter, that you need to be able to pass to advance the story any further. So basically I am looking into, at an average level of play, what percentage of one's nights should they have to spend on mission planning rather than NPC interaction.

Kind of like in the Persona series when at night you either go to the other world or interact with an NPC. What is a good split.

Wait, what? Even GM:S lets you call scripts with defined arguments. I can relate with the re-licensing woes though: I've had GM since 6.0
>>
>>152688768
No, if you talk to an NPC you don't plan a mission that night.

The main character doesn't actually GO on missions, he merely plans them, assigns resources/research/training and mission approach. Then gets reports back based on how the mission went.

So it's just Plan/NPC. There is no just go on a mission.

>>152688747

>>
>>152689014
So it makes no difference what amount of time it takes since you are required to do one of the two anyways. Not planning a mission fucks you even without taking time away and not talking to an NPC does too since those two are mututally exclusive. Am I missing something?
>>
>>152687170
That was me. By chance, you're not confusing OpenMT for OpenMPT? Those are two totally different programs.

Anyway, yeah, LMMS is fine, just use whatever will get you writing music. I would still recommend a MIDI controller, but given you live in Brazil I'm not sure how easy it'll be for you to obtain one (Maybe a friend has one..?)

In any case, don't worry too much about instruments: Get yourself SGM-v2.01.sf2 via google, or look for .wav instruments you can import into the program to sample stuff, SNES-style.

Composition-wise, I don't think I can say this any better than Toby Fox, so here you go: https://twitter.com/tobyfox/status/754721147262992384

Thank you but I don´t mean roguelike. More like Fallout 1/2 type of combat.
>>
>>152689376
> Am I missing something?
Yes.

Ok, lets say that at the end of chapter 1 there is a required mission. I spent all my nights just talking to NPCs, so my agents have no upgrades/resources and thus can not pass the mission. This means I can not continue.

I could instead ONLY plan mission, but then my agents will be overtrained/overgeared and thus pass the mission easily, but I never interacted with the night time NPCs.

Because either NPC or mission is mutually exclusive what is the minimum percentage, with average play, one should have to spend planning missions? What is a good balance between the two?

Make an array/ds_list that lags behind your previous inputs. Try to offset the "final" position so the partner isn't always exactly on top of you.

If you've ever played Gradius or found an engine emulating it, the Options (the red orbs trailing behind the ship) in that game work exactly the same way.
>>
>>152689648
Ah you don't mean per night but per chapter. Sorry, I cannot into brain right now.

I would say that 30% should be the minimum to make the required missions hard but diable, 50% to make them an average difficulty and 70% for a breeze.

I am probably going to look this, but LMMs already came with piano and church organ which were the ones I was most interested in

I think I have good ideas for musics, so far I am just struggling a bit to get around the program but I believe I will do better in musics for my game than the art/development in the end, thanks for the help and links

Also, we have 20 some odd NPCs with their own story arcs that occur during the day/night. As we have it now there is three branching plots. By the end of your 2nd play through, if you tried, you've probably done every NPC. Should we just add more NPCs to interact with to fill three play throughs, or is it ok to just have no new NPCs for play through #3? The game is designed so that subsequent play throughs are both easier and faster.
>>
>>152689943
When I started my project the first thing was code all the GUI functionality I'd ever need (mostly using the IMGUI method) just so I could document it before doing anything else.
>>
>>152690334
Create a few NPC's that are random playthrough occurences and maybe mututally exclusive so that you keep the game fresh every time (FTL kinda overdid this, but it's a good example).
>>
>>152690091
No problem. One more clarification: I actually meant "MIDI Piano Controller" specifically, because there's other kinds of MIDI controllers, like the LaunchPad a bunch of EDM composers post videos of them playing with.

Takeaway: Ideas are dime a dozen, your pitch should be 30 seconds or less (1 or 2 short sentence descriptions).

Good luck, /agdg/.
>>
>>152690594
There is the main story branch which is fresh every route. Perhaps mutually exclusive missions?

If we have an NPC that can only be completed on certain routes that's also a thought. Likely they would be NPCs tied to the organization the MC is a part of. For instance in one route one of the individuals becomes an antagonist, in another you could complete his arc.

What is a good function to apply to an array that would return positive numbers in the middle and negative numbers on the extremes? I mean like this:

>>

I'm kinda shifting away from the idea of creating huge stretches of land procedurally and would like to focus more on some type of island style game. Maybe floating, maybe not but that doesn't matter here now. To create those within a grid, I would need to have to extremes of a grid have a lower chance of spawning ground than the middle. Adding noise to such a function is no problem, but since all the values within the grid are positive for math reasons, I am kinda stuck.

Hey, if you're a musician, send me an email at [email protected] with an example of your work; I need a ridiculous number of tracks and multiple musicians for all the games I'm working on.

Reclaim Reality needs a very, very wide amount of genres, so I'll likely be hiring multiple musicians for that one, needs over 70 tracks.
Future Fragments needs a smaller list of genres, probably two musicians total for that game, around 30 tracks needed.
Internal Interrogation needs the least, only 10 or so tracks, all fantasy genre, only need one musician for this.

All three games are 18+ NSFW, but you will be paid for your music, of course. None of the games have loli/shota/bestiality/guro/incest so you don't have to fear the cops coming to your door for making music for these games, either, and you'd be free to use an alias, too.

Is this all due to good character design or are my ideas really that obvious and cliche?

I just added input buffering so that you can input during hitstop, for example. This wasn't previously in because I had no idea how to implement that shit but I guess my inner programmer powers awakened due fever and being awake 2 days.

I also fixed some issues with hitstop too (they weren't really noticeable due it lasting so short amount of time).

It should work properly now. This makes the combat more tighter since there's no way the input you did will not be registered. I heard HLD had some issues with inputting due low fps and shit and I want to avoid problems like this.

Sorry if my writing is messy.

I always thought this would be a neat idea.

You make a fantasy, only make a few districts. What you then do it open the assets in a "level building" game. People upload their level (could be as small as a house), and others vote. The most popular ones get added to the city. Over time the city then goes as people build onto the ramshackle shit city.

You hold weekly contests for small lots, monthly for bigger, and bi-yearly for district themes. You'd just need GMs for an approval system, going through ones that might win and filtering out dick jokes.

>>
>>152697092
It tries to interpolate your mouse movements. What that can play out as is getting movements that are way too slow when you drag fast or vice versa. It's fucking annoying in FPS's since you don't get consistent feedback in how much mouse movement corresponds to how much rotation, especially on hitscan weapons.

Personally, I'd say don't go overkill on how many moves have hitstop. That Japanese game "Uppers" is a good example of way too much hitstop. Or BlazBlue. It stops losing its impact if you have like 10 frames (assuming 60fps) of hitstop on every single little combo hit. Probably worth noting is that God Hand used very little if any hitstop, although given that game's camera angle and how much impact the launchers and finishers have, I think it was 100% warranted. On the other hand, you can run into the problem where you rely too much on particle effects that don't give moves much impact instead, like Star Ocean 5 or basically any Korean MMO out there.

I have faith in you though, do what you think looks/feels good. Looking at what you've got it looks pretty sick. Just giving my two cents.

I don't know about Unity specifically, but the general idea is that you'd check for "theoretical" collision around an object's new position, then adjust its destination before ultimately changing where it's drawn.

Given that Unity obfuscates a lot of stuff, I'm not sure what you do specifically in it.

Is it best for me to make a bunch of assets to construct a "play test" level before I ask a programmer to help me with the combat and other coding details?

Shape cast (sweep)
>>
>>152697998
> It stops losing its impact if you have like 10 frames (assuming 60fps) of hitstop on every single little combo hit.
This is why I'm thinking of having different lengths of hitstops depeding on attack's strenght. Like very light attacks (like sliding) would do very short or no hitstop while the sword swings would make longer and same would apply to enemies.

Can't really say much about it yet without testing around what feels good.
>>
>>152698331
There's no difference between resolving the collision before or after moving the object though
>>
>>152697305

>>
>>152698475
That's what I was thinking. Save the big hitstop for the big attacks where timing a move after it isn't critical, but it's an attack you don't necessarily see 24/7 and it makes it look better even after the 100th time you've seen it.

>>152698480
Yeah, that's kinda what I meant with the "obfuscated" thing. I don't know how Unity handles game logic versus rendering. In theory if you were rolling your own code you'd just do all the collision logic for a given object (bare minimum, if not all of them) in one go without changing where it'll actually be drawn until the collision is resolved.

I know I'm not being very helpful, I'm just stating what I know. Sorry man.
