let's say you start with some barrels of water that sustain you for so long, they're magically added to any meal you cook so long as you have the water, and you'll need to find some source of water before your supply runs out or you'll suffer dehydration penalties. water can be found on the surface, in mountains, or underground, and you could always build a well anywhere in the lategame for guaranteed water, maybe make it a task to refill your water storages

that's one shitty way of doing it, not the end of the world

there is no need for dehydration as long as there is malnutrition. there are already differences to the biomes regarding your aspect. it's called fertility.

it's better to make one cleaning day with most colonists and afterwards keep one colonist with high priority on cleaning.
if everyone has high priority on cleaning, one of them will stop whatever they do whenever there is a single tile dirty.

I mean, she was already collapsed.

Also, the prison is not contiguous with the rest of my facility and everyone is in early stage heatstroke until I recycle enough steel to build more A/C. They are also all on minor toxic buildup because I had them build hallways between all major facilities before I confined them.

So I doubt she'll hang on long enough for someone to get healthy enough to risk rescuing her. But if I can avoid the hit to mood, I will.

Playing in average climates, it's often not a big issue. Single wide is good enough, but more insulation guarantees your things won't rot during a solar flare or bad power shortage.

The higher the average temperature, obviously the better your freezer will want/need to be. Seems like above 41c you're saving a lot of cooler resources if you insulate, even early on.

Then if you're on an icesheet you probably don't even need a freezer, you can put your food outside under a roof. Lategame if you want people to cook food in the freezer you could probably do a heater/cooler setup to keep it at -3c or something.

Medevil mod to an extent, but fuck those easy ass windows that let you shoot through, too easy with that, rest is great.

Ability to make multiple colonies, but once you change from one it turns into a faction that continues to grow exponentially from Wealth(for better or worse) so you cant go back.

So like, say you made a big colony, lots of tech, then you can move like a max of 3 to start over new in another map region, your current colony stays and grows based on tech+wealth and can be enemies/friends(should at least be neutral if changing)

So now you create some nice storytelling from past colonists who can come trade, wander, or attack you.

Some more history keeping would be nice outside of Art pieces.

I'm making the colonists for this using Prepare Carefully (At least to get the backgrounds right so that my muffalo shaman won't refuse to go anywhere near animals) and Altering the game to give me more wood to start in order to build this frontier town.

Regardless of the climate, I only use a single wall and no airlock.

Reasons:
1. I can protect against solar flares by keeping a low temperature and locking the door while the flare is going on;
2. Space is premium. Space = walking distance = time = colonists doing shit.
3. Airlocks look fucking ugly.

Can somebody fucking help me figure out how the base stuff like hats is defined in the xml files? I'm trying to relocate them to different crafting tables and not having any luck. I'm in the process of dividing out clothing and weapons into different tables because I have a fuck ton of mods installed. Basically I've been working on a mod pack similar to hardcore SK for like a month now. Once I get everything done I'll post it up so people can try it.

Basically how I have it set up is that you start off with tribal Era people and progress to medieval tech then to modern tech then spacer tech. I'm trying to keep items appropriate to the tech periods which means having to move around and create new crafting benches and items. I'll post more details about it tomorrow. Going to bread. Hope one of you dudes can help me out.

Never build you walls out wood past the first building. Fire proof everything. I good defense I like to use is to put wood deadfall traps all along my walls. The ai loves to swarm the walls so they end walking all over them trying to hit the walls. Also remember fire breaks. Finally, another tip is to deconstruct all the buildings you see around the map. This often gives you enough stone build your first wall.

I really wish this game favored melee combat more. What it really needs is a separate melee and ranged weapon slot for each colonist and ammunition. As it is, melee is extremely niche (nice in an ideal situation, otherwise useless). It doesn't help that in the vanilla game there isn't a lot of good limb and face armor until power armor. Plus some enemies *cough bugs* *cough mechanoids* are insanely deadly in melee. Like we didn't need enough reasons to not use it.

It's just all the 4.0 hardcore sk mods active minus three independents and some added weapons/armor and minor tweaks mods. I don't see how any of the extra mods would be causing this.

order is from the config file in the zip for hardcore sk with the extras at the bottom.

It also happens in any other scenario that involves coming down from pods, such as crashlanded. No matter what I tried I couldn't get them to not be hit by the ship. Ended up turning on dev and turning off all damage with god mode on and they finally survived being hit by the ship without being completely crippled.

I can see how that could mess the fancy start up if it was in charge of the spawn timers, since they spawn before the big ship lands but after the smaller debris which would be when they normally spawn.

MSPaint time...

I built my base with my south end completely exposed to the edge of the map, and yet there's also a northern and eastern face of the map that are, other than a small hole in the mountains that happens to be right next to my base, completely walled off from the rest of the map. This essentially means I have nowhere to put a killbox because I'm getting shit on on two fronts and one of the fronts is wide open.

However, I think I can "fix" things by walling off the hole in the mountains (green) and drilling a hole through another section of the mountains (black) so raiders from the north have to take the long way around through said hole so they eventually circle around from the south.

The problem is, the last time I walled off the area in green (without having drilled through the black), raiders just bashed their way through the green walls. I'm half thinking that maybe I should just reroll and put my base in a more defensible position.

That place I have walls right now next to the graveyard I want to wall off 100%, and then drill a hole through the mountain somewhere to the south (so invaders from the north take the long way around and come at me from the south) but I don't want to bother if invaders from the north will just beat down the wall instead of walking the long way around.

And no, the space above my solar panels is a dead end with no exit and a geothermal geyser.

you can but there is also a mood bonus for a impressive dinning room. rec room and dinning room are besides bedrooms the current targets for beauty. if one of those 3 are impressive your colonists get a mood bonus.

i've got over 300 hours of playtime and i can count the numbers my base got burned down because it's made of wood on one hand.

but even then i have to admit those times it happened it ended my games and it was the only reason that i wasn't able to put out the fire quick enough.

The game code gives travellers/raiders/pawns coming onto the map a 'budget' for items depending on how late into the game you are, wealth, colonist number, etc etc.

Not permanently, but if you allow stuff like alphabeavers eating trees to go on unchecked it can fuck you up pretty long-term since trees don't grow very quickly.

Animals come from off the map every few days to a week. If winter is coming, you shouldn't worry about over hunting the local wildlife. If I'm not mistaken, winter actually decreases spawns for certain animals, so you're probably better off hunting while you can anyways.

If you're extremely low on food, rice grows super quickly in fertile soil. Potatoes will grow at sonic speeds in it as well. You could also construct a paste dispenser, which consumes less food per meal versus cooking/eating raw, at the trade-off of giving your colonists a -3 debuff once a day each time they eat the paste.

It depends. Are they raiders, outlanders, or tribals? Were they initially neutral?

Executing them using the operations tab inflicts a debuff on everyone but colonists with 'bloodlust' and psychopath' traits. You used to be able to manually draft colonists and shoot the prisoners, which I personally really enjoyed, but that no longer works, since if they die at all the debuff is inflicted. I suggest getting a mod that removes it.

Dealing with my first infestation.

Of my five colonists, only two are capable of fighting, so I don't think I can take on even a first generation infestation in combat. (Plus I'm out of steel for new turrets).

I've only been using this mountain for mining. Can I just seal it off, as I have, and let the bugs have it? Or will they spill out and attack my base? I'm only connected to the mountain by a single tunnel, which I've already closed.

Personally, I think the xenohuman stuff is extremely cheesy and shouldn't be included in the game.

It's just orcs and dwarves and elves handwaved with 'they're genetically human but different lol'. Feels very lazy from both a lore and gameplay standpoint.

it's been two years since I've started playing rimworld and this still gets me

I play conservatively, never expanding beyond my capacity to maintain that level of growth indefinitely, always preparing all of the infrastructure I need in advance and having large stocks of frozen meals stocked for emergencies. I also never add colonists without large, nicely-decorated, happiness-inducing homes ready to accomodate them. As a result, the game gives me wave after wave of enemies because I'm doing well. If I was expanding willy-nilly and always on the brink of starvation, brown-outs, and mutiny, it would be leaving me alone.

Anyone else feel frustrated by the rubber-band "random" events? It feels a lot like Civ 4, where you'd get never-ending waves of fires, floods, and earthquakes if you made the mistake of playing well enough to pull ahead of the AI civs.

Seriously, I've tried to start a new colony like three or four times in the past few days, but I always get to choosing your colonists and can't get past it. The RNG used for choosing colonists is such shit - it seems like it's super easy to get colonists who have lots of points in something like Animals, Art or Melee or, but heaven forbid you want a cook who doesn't disavow dumb labor or a doctor who isn't also a geriatric with asthma, or somebody who is useful in some other vitals tasks but outright refuses to fight or vice versa.

And no, I don't want to use Prepare Carefully, because I also don't want to min-max my characters and basically cheat my way to a perfect starting build. I just want slightly better rolls...is that too much to ask?

nope. this is one reason I play with the rich explorer start a lot. I just get one well-rounded starter, then have to take what I can get from the world.

I've started getting away from mountain bases entirely, since mining out rooms takes far longer than building walls

you might want to get make the exterior walls thicker, especially by stockpiles. raiders will mine or blow through walls to get to stuff. maybe hostages too.

I don't see any defenses, either, so you might want a sandbagged defensive position, either by the entrances to defend the base or south of the solar panels and crops, as raiders will be happy to just fuck you over.

Deep mining is pretty late game, so you'd have to coast on trading and build with stone blocks.. Mountains would still have an advantage, which sucks.

Organs probably aren't very hard to come by, with thousands of people fighting to the death daily on the rimworld alone. A released, free prisoner is going to have an easier time getting new organs than escaping slavery, which would likely be for the rest of his life.
