In vanilla there are no enemies on the map at first and they fall down if Zhang gets closer to the evac point.
They don't attack you right away, just go into overwatch, giving you a chance to take them out easily.
Honestly what he says is still ridiculous, although I doubt I would have problem with a solo Heavy on Classic.

Yep. XCOM is always at its most fun in the first half of the game, where you never have enough resources and the aliens seem to perpetually have the upper hand. But once you get past that, odds are you're pretty much guranteed to go on to win. The sense of risk and danger vanishes.

This applies to every game of this type, actually, it applies to most games. Once you get so strong or powerful that the enemies stop being challenging things start getting dull and boring.

We need more ayy mods that show up after the vanilla ayys and are significantly stronger. We also need more rulers, and/or we need a mod that stops the rulers from running away, the fact that you can hit them a couple of times and then they just leave makes it incredibly easy to cheese them.

That's right motherfuckers, we're running a bronzeman impossible solo soldier campaign (because sometimes RNG fucks you). I've been planning this bullshit for about six months now, and I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

In order for this to be possible, we need one skillsets for maximum rampage mode to unlock
bullet swarm/opportunist/sentinel (covering fire is a nice bonus)
Sit still in high cover, shoot once, then overwatch and wreck face when any ayy tries to do anything besides cower in fear. You essentially get the firepower of half a fucking squad crammed into one mean-ass bastard, and with Adaptive Bone Marrow backing him up keeping him out of the medbay and providing free infinite heals after firefights, he can take upwards of thirty damage over the course of a mission and bounce back 5 days later. Once you hit the Respirator Implant and grab Mimetic Skin, you become unstoppable.

Scout Maslov is spotted by a group of floaters as he checks the motion tracker, not one but two patrol groups are returning directly to the UFO. The outsiders are definitely waiting in hiding behind the bulkhead and the terrible damage the elerium reactor's blowout caused to the hull exposes anyone inside to plasma fire from outside. If we fall back, the floaters will surely fly through said gaping holes, open the door, and expose the outsiders within. Lt. Jenkins has a dire choice to make, the squad must fall back or charge forward.

This isn't exactly true, as early on you should sink some time into autopsies to get the tech they allow (Faceless->meme beacons, Trooper->scanners, Captain->everything forever). Just don't prioritize them over real techs like guns, armor, etc. Autopsies are, generally, targets of opportunity, research you take when you lack anything more pressing to focus on.

To be fair and not to spoil you, the project is obviously something the aliens have been thinking about for quite a bit of time. It makes sense that they already did some progress.

You might simply be going the wrong way about it.
You can ignore it as in not shitting yourself because it's close to completion or the timer is running, but that doesn't mean you can ignore it completely.
You should always be contacting regions that lead you to a facility, especially since the amti-cheese patch.
Always have at least one facility ready to hit, leave the blacksite for emergencies since it's close and you probably contacted it fairly early on.
Abuse the days you're given, only hit those missions/facilities when the timer is close to zero and remember that destroying facilities also prevents the aliens from doing any more progress for a while.

Also, as other anon said, some autopsies are pretty crucial unless you enjoy suffering.
Do skip faceless autopsy until the second retal is about to hit, though.
The corpses from the first one won't be enough to let you build a beacon and you can use those days for more pressing research.

I played Long War in the first XCOM and really liked many features but they came packaged with some truly terrible game design decisions in my opinion. Presumably these changes were to make the games more like the originals but as somebody who was played the originals, the changes only really served to make the game tedious and dull rather than stressful and weighty. Sure, I could edit the ini but then I know the numbers and a good part of the mystery and 'what if' is destroyed. For this reason I'm hesitant on jumping straight into Long War stuff for XCOM when I haven't finished the base game at all.

I'll give it a play after I've gone through once or twice. That way I can appreciate any changes it made more fully and judge as to which I prefer.

However, when they add progress they may do so to the facility itself or to the general project represented in the ocean.
Facility progress can be removed by blowing up the facility, general progress by doing story missions.
Thing is, the project doesn't necessarily need an active facility to advance.
If the blip triggering the countdown is generated from the general advancement and you have no facilities active or story missions to take, that's as far as you go. Either you finish the game, or game over.

Its the way the vanilla game calculates crit. In XCOM1, the game rolls for crit on a 1-100 scale effectively.
In XCOM2, the game rolls crit chance against hit chance instead.
So if you have 20% hit chance and 20% crit chance, you should crit the enemy every-time you hit.
If you don't like this (because it makes no sense) you can always use the EU rolls mod.

So I'm trying to make a super will soldier. I've been told by people that it's possible to level up beyond 7 with the levelupbarracks console hack. Supposedly it's the only thing that does that, but as annoying as it is I haven't heard of a different way so it looks like i'll have to cycle out every soldier in the barracks except the selected one.

The problem of course is that it's not working. Is this something to do with long war? was the ability to increase will from further level ups patched at some point? do you have to enter combat to get the bonus?

I only had the money for one heavy plasma at the time. everyone else has LPRs (i prefer them for the aim bonus since everyone but that guy has the means to take two shots per turn and i'd rather they both hit) and my other much higher aim heavy has the plasma and bullet storm or w/e its called

i give low-aim heavies holo targeting and build them to be cover-destroyers so that my other soldiers can actually make their goddamn shots

My toaster didn't run into any slow downs yet, outside of berserkers. Whenever they move during my turn from a hit, the framerate takes a noticeable hit, which goes away the moment they stop moving. If I hit two at once, I'm pretty sure my frame rate drops into the single digits. I don't even want to know what will happen if I hit 3 or more of them at the same time.

Unintentionally is my guess. The game was never meant to be modded to the extent of LW, so there was a lot of jury rigging on their side through various means. Who knows what the side effects are. The berserkers are the only ones really that I have regular performance issues with, but again, it's just when they move during your turn, which is only a few seconds.

I liked them for vanilla runs but my game is so heavily modded now that it's literally impossible with timers as they are in vanilla and I can't be fucked going through trial and error to find a decent balance for them so I just got rid of them.

Phew, that's that. MVP definitely goes to my snipe who killed the first muton with a 60% shot and killed the second one immediately afterwards with a 30% shot.

The sectoids were wrecking havoc on me. They hit a mindfray on both my infantry and gunner towards the beginning of the fight really sapping my firepower initially, and then spent the rest of the time over-watching and suppressing.

Did any UFOs ever get away from you? I think scouts are what look for your sats, so if you get them they have a lower chance of even knowing you have a sat. I don't know for sure though, I'm not 100% privy to all of LWs changes.

Don't worry about it. Accept that the ayys will gather resources everywhere you can't see and focus on other things. I'm currently near the end of August and I've barely touched the air game. LW is balanced around the fact that they'll run roughshod over your air defense for a while.

Worry about doing well in the things you can control. A satellite is 200 bucks, but shooting down a scout and selling 2 damaged computers and a reactor gives you 120 bucks right there. Just keep shooting down what you can so you can make missions and your soldiers can earn their nonexistent pay.

Until you can fuck up lighter UFO's easily, with lasers or upgraded phoenix coilguns, just err on the side of caution. Trying to artfully pick off sat hunters is tricky, so just don't waste your time, money, and panic rating on it.

Even ignoring most of the ufo's, most of the ones you see will be NOE and land anyway, and that means lots and lots of delicious loot, especially alloys and flight computers.

I edited that to one day for weapon refit. The point of it being so long was so you couldn't just take a laser cannon off a 30 day damaged interceptor and slap it onto a fresh one quick enough to catch the next UFO, but you can just avoid doing that yourself.

Then you are looking at it all wrong. Stats are distributed on point basis. Technically everyone has the same "amount" of points. Its up to you how best to make use of those stats, but I'll give some examples.

Good health, average aim, low mobility-gunner
High aim, average to high health-infantry
High aim, low health, low mobility-sniper
High health, High mobility, low aim-assault
High will-medic
low health, high/average aim, average to good mobility-rocketeer
Good mobility, preferably average to high health, any aim -scout
Anything else-engineer


Most of your troops don't need to shoot things to be useful. Medics and engi builds are mostly aim independant. Assaults and Scouts can make good use of shotguns. Scouts also have good aim progression. Gunners can and will spend lots of time suppressing.

Infrantry and snipers are the primary shooty classes that are aim or nothing.
Obviously it is up to you exactly how you want to distribute the stats. You will end up with some soldiers that aren't optimized, but they can still carry their weight just fine.
You could fire soldiers, but at 25$ a pieces that ain't cheap and everyone is useless without experience.

Yeah good builds are not immediately obvious. Not only do you want a good build for that soldier, but you want them to fill in a niche that helps support your other soldiers. There are also some perk choices that have immediate benefits, and others that need time to pay off.
There are some class guides in the OP LW pastebin if you want some ideas.

Eh, I'm trying to avoid build spoilers else everone ends up identical and I'm quite enjoying the motley crew effect.

I did take too much Snap Shot without thinking about it so now long rifles are my go-to, which I probably wouldn't have bothered with making otherwise, for instance. If I end up having to retry, I'll probably be a lot more efficient and a lot less interested.

You are supposed to use HE nades in combo with sapper. Basically, cover destruction is a premium ability reserved for Rocketeers and Engineers early game until you get alien grenades. Most times your better off with AP nades if a non-engi is using them. Two HE nades can destroy weak half cover.

Yes that's what I've been doing. They're still garbage at cover destruction. I've pretty much benched all my engineers and replaced them with rockets as a result.

Also immediately after bitching about this a flashed and suppressed outsider just crit someone in full cover.
