Probably seems like a stupid question, but anyway.

I want to implement an alt look feature similar to rust or arma where if you're holding down a key you change the camera(and most likely character head) rotation with that rotation being clamped to certain points. Unfortunately I haven't had much progress in the past few months, and really not much since October outside of a bit of work in Spring. I re-wrote the inventory/item system (all externally defiend and stuff now, with the ability to query and stuff based on flags) although I haven't done much besides that. I've been busy. I hope I can start making progress again though now.

im looking for a way to do composible systems for damage.
basically i want items to be variable like in action rpgs.
the easiest way to explain it. if i had my main characer deal 50 base damage but hed pick up a powerup that adds like 20% increased damage or like 12 fire damge on that base attack.
now its not hard in itself. but i want to create a dynamic system that i can manipulate at will and at runtime and that i can use as a template for other items as well.

im thinking about really just a baseclass of item. and then extend that class for each item i want to add. but i want priorties to be set and i dont want them hard coded.
for example damage converisons to apply after damage additons and oh hit effects to be composible.

is there a good book that goes into this?

Was thinking of what attack to add first. Tried going for a charge attack, but it ended up horrible. I'm not sure what attacks should I start with. Want the game to be fast paced and for the player to always be aware of enemies and their attack patterns, while trying to dodge them.

Projectiles could work I guess.

Also, added a simple enemy spawn animation and a death/explosion.

Yes. It started as a joke idea in the next jam poll. Since in the end it won the poll it was actually made into a real jam.
A few days ago someone noticed that all references to AGDG were deleted from the jam's page (if they ever existed) and that it's being advertised outside of 4chan, and most people now attribute it to lewdgamer.

So, either the guy that made it really needs to have a lot of games to fap and decided to make it public it to have more people joining or he never cared about AGDG anyway and just shilled his jam here pretending to be part of the community.

I have a cousin that has schizo. It's really sad to watch a person that got it. I grew up with him and have played together since child. He was a normal back then. UE4 has dedicated and extensive systems for particles (Cascade) and animation (Persona). Unity does not have this, it has a clunky component for particles and it doesn't have anything that comes close to Persona.

In total, you'd need like 200$+ to spend in Unity to come even close to what UE4 offers out of the box.
UE4 offers you source code right away, you can modify the engine as you please. Unity needs you to license theirs out instead.
In terms of networking, Unreal is built on providing multiplayer out of the box ever since they started the engine, whereas Unity just started integrating networking system recently (1-2 years).
Also Unity has no game framework. You are thrown into a complete bare-bones engine with a simple game loop with gameobjects and a component system. Unreal has player controllers where you can turn on/off input to focus on UI only, or the game only, or both, a GameInstance which is a global singleton, GameMode/GameState/PlayerState which you don't necessarily have to use but the framework is present. Pawn/possession system. Much more developed than Unity's completely empty framework.
Would you rather have the option of a game framework to use (or discard as you wish), or nothing at all?
Oh also Unreal has a game pause system that works with its UI, Unity has nothing like that.

Finally got my Kinect Adapter today.
Wanted to build a cheap mocap setup with it
Pic related is the first (uncleaned/raw) recording output.

Gotta fiddle around with recording settings a bit (especially hands; also I should probably record in a bigger room, because my legs weren't completely on camera).

If you're having problems trying to contact your team members they're either:

It is most likely the latter. Working in a team is hard. Your team was probably great when everyone was constantly posting updates with whatever their job is on the project. However if one stops posting as much, everyone will stop posting as much.

I'd honestly try to contact everyone and try to get people re-interested. If they agree, even if half-heartedly. Start pushing out shit. Other people doing stuff is the best motivation to start working themselves, because they feel guilty for not doing so (usually). If you can get that far you can even set goals with people so they have some hint of obligation to work to.

Or money...You know. People don't flake out jobs because of money.

That's the workflow so far. No idea how to link this together with models safely so far (.bvh imports are scaled pretty big), but once I figure that out I'm gonna clean the animation and it goes straight into UE4 i guess.

Gotta get more familiar with the blender animation process though. Especially weight painting.

If you're going to make your health/stamina/mana/stat-recovering potions a different color other than the popularly accepted colors you should make sure that your UI bars/meters showing the player's status are the same color as their respective potions.

It's simple good game design and common fucking sense. Players should be able to distinguish what they're looking at a first glance to make gameplay less confusing and tedious.

Then it sounds like they have lost all interest and you should tell them if they're not interested that's fine but it is better than just pussyfooting around the issue and having everything grind to a halt.

If they're really not interested, no reason you should hold them hostage and no reason for them to delay game dev when you could be looking for someone else. The biggest issue in teams that I've found is losing your artist. You're probably not going to find someone who can do similar art so you'll most likely have to scrap the work that person has already done.

Where you select an alien race, or a character from da movi3z. Place bets on races on other planets. Modify your pod to change the speed, acceleration, traction, ect. I made an empty object with a simple box collider. Inside the empty object is the camera.

The empty object moves and rotates using Transform.Translate and transform.Rotate and brings the camera with itself.

All other objects have colliders too.

How can I make it so that the empty object actually collides with other stuff and stops moving, but without really affecting the physics of other objects?

I changed the one-frame strobe lasers into short, smoothed ones. They look a lot better now. I also fixed a couple more bugs in targeting code, and fiddled a bit with particle appearance.

You're welcome! What this will do is overwrite what sprite the player was on the last frame with the idle sprite and then check for movement, and then overwrite the sprite with a movement sprite if there is movement.

Those operations are so tiny that optimising takes a back seat to readability.

Not only that, but readable code in this case is much faster.
Just do
var = false; without the check. The in either situation, you have a single operation going on.
In your example if var already is false, you have one operation ( the if ).
If var is true, you now have two operations.

This is ignoring many cases though, such as the fact that an if operation is going to be slower than an assignment, etc.

MOST IMPORTANTLY though, it doesn't matter. Especially for indie-dev, don't even think about performance if it doesn't have todo with collections. Just make your fucking game, then optimise it.

FL Studio's a good choice. If you're gonna stick with free, then OpenMPT is a good+free tracker music maker that lets you use .wav clips (and also .sf2 soundfonts) as instruments.

Audacity is another free tool that lets you record stuff with your mic/import existing .wavs and export them as .wavs, .oggs, and .mp3s.

There's also the free music maker LMMS, but I don't know how good that is other than "it's free, has piano roll and VST support"

Game Maker is deceivingly powerful if you set it up to use Game States and do everything (or as much as you can) in GML. You can download the trial version for free (no expiration date but all exports have a watermark until you pay... or just pirate it)

Also, typing raw code is much faster than clicking around, which GML encourages. (And yet, it still gives you the option to stick with GUI stuff if you'd rather do that. I personally wouldn't think that will help you in the long run, though.)

Like other anon said, you need to learn how to draw first. If you can, invest in a Wacom Intuos CTH-480 tablet (the one I use) and grab Paint Tool Sai... or just get a sketchbook and a black pencil and thick pen.

Then, just draw the kind of shit that you like. At least one thing every day. Try to draw small things (only heads, only hands, only torsos, etc...) in quick repetition/exercises and you'll start to gradually build muscle memory over time.

You'll want to read up on anatomy (there's TONS of free tutorials online, especially YouTube) and color theory/shading-highlighting-light source knowledge will be super important when you get into small-res pixel art.

... But hey, I'm a musician. I can only relate on the more general aspect of getting better at art, so take that as you will.

Just a note: If you're gonna use OpenMPT, learn the shortcuts... Maybe even change the control scheme to the FastTracker II preset if you want to use FamiTracker eventually too, because they're the exact same controls.

If you use LMMS, you'll probably want to get yourself a MIDI keyboard if you want to notate fast, but otherwise I'd still recommend OpenMPT otherwise you'll be clicking around just to get stuff done, whereas notating (effects like pitchbending/stereo pan-sliding, even) is much faster via keyboard in trackers.

what games do you guys look at for inspiration?

I've been really hung up on Wizardry lately. The fucking gameplay is SHIIIIIIIIT, because it's all save-scumming numbershit bullying you into making graphpaper maps, but they manage to make semi-interesting lore in that your characters carry over from one game to another and they manage to make somewhat decent setting and lore in most of them. I feel like the stories they were trying to tel would be infinitely more entertaining if they weren't trapped in such a shit isometric dungeon crawl. Anyone else look at old games and try doing fixer-uppers?

Got work done on the start of my UI system. Actual art will come later. I caved and bought a database editor. I was making one myself but it was taking tremendous amounts of time.

Now I can create new skills, items, characters, and pretty much everything on the fly and have it in the game within seconds.

Actually it's going to be an MMORPG :^)

Once I get a basic UI down (chat, class customization, fully functional hotbar, inventory) I'll move on to a basic action combat system. Once that's done I'll work on networking. Hoping to have a multiplayer arena set up that people can join and fight each other in.

My goal is to have 100% action combat, even for ranged attackers and healers. That's why I have the Dark Souls-like movement.

Tentacle machine boss sketch for the first demo of Reclaim Reality.

Incredibly lightweight materials, fires a laser out of its bottom that lights the ground on fire, sucks up the heat from the fire through the holes in its tentacles and vents it through its sides to float/fly in the air temporarily.

Can also attach onto buildings without damaging them significantly by reversing the air flow in the tentacles to suction onto them, etc.
