What's /mgg/'s general consensus on MGSV?

Recently started a new save on MGSV and holy shit.

This game is fucking god like. The story is garbage (purely due to it not meeting my expectiations) but holy fuck.

I'm having a fucking blast. Thief 2, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Deus Ex, not one of these fucking stealth games match how much fun i'm having with MGSV right now.

It wasn't finished. It's apparent in the two "chapters", very few boss fights, barren MB, etc.

It's a shame too, because it may have the best controls and base gameplay of any game I've ever played. Honestly, I think it needed another year or two of development time. Kojima probably felt the same, but Konami was unwilling, and I can't really blame them.

On paper the open world seemed so cool, but the execution of it just didn't live up to what it could have been. In hindsight, I think a game with about 25 GZ styled maps would have been perfect. Both for a more complete and focused story as well as varied and carefully crafted missions.

I also started a new save 2 months ago and I'm still enjoying it on a near daily basis. It's gotten a lot more fun now that I've got a good handle on MB management and the gameplay still surprises me sometimes, even after 350+ hours. The depth of it all is simply stunning.
It's just a shame that a lot of people just think tranqing and fultoning everything in sight is the most 'optimal' way to go. People don't seem to grasp a lot of MB's systems that allow you to get all the resources and personnel you need.

I've also been using Infinite heaven to make free roam 100x more interesting (patrols, enemy vehicles/choppers, more mine fields, beefed up the enemy soldier abilities, etc) so part of the fun I'm having is attributed to the mod.

Story wise, especially after going a second time through and picking up on a lot more of the subtext, I wouldn't say it's garbage. It's hit and miss. It does certain themes and setpieces amazingly well while fumbling all over itself during other parts. I'd say it's good overall but then again I'd didn't allow myself to expect x or y during the hype train and started with an open mind.

It was Big Boss who secretly convinced Huey to ask for that Nuclear Inspection. Big Boss knew what was going to happen, no, he NEEDED it to happen in order to vanish and start outer heaven.
Things did not go quite as planned. Skull Face had his own agenda, he was supposed to make sure Big Boss escapes but instead wanted him dead too. Still, Big Boss survived and could go through with the plan he had all along. Mosquito was right.

First, you should know that there are 5 ways to get mother base staffed:
- Fulton them out from the field
- Combat Deployment (Recruiting missions)
- Completing missions
- The PF Grade system
- FOB missions

You should really only be hunting and fultoning high ranked soldiers from the field. Only S ranks are worth it usually, depending on the state of your MB personnel. The only exception to fultoning more is if you have a severe shortage in your staff.

Combat Deployment is likely the biggest resource to get staff from. Look for "Staff headhunting" and "Staff Recruiment" missions. Some offline missions will grant you staff and another resource but it's usually a gamble. For example, a 40% chance to get x amount of volunteers ranked between S and E along with a 100% chance to get 20000 GMP. The online dispatch missions is where it's at. It literally takes days but you'll get a 100% to acquire x amount of high ranked staff.

Completing missions will get you volunteers no matter what. Also important is that when you select a mission, you can see what kind of specialists you can get inside the mission too. These are usually well worth hunting and usually come in the form of prisoners. Look above the map when selecting a mission to see all available specialists and blueprints. If the text is bright, you don't have them yet.

The PF Grade system is basically a timegated way to upgrade your MB staff. You get PF Points, depending on how well you do.
You don't have much control over it. The more materials, personnel, vehicles and weapons you gather from the field the higher you'll rise in PF Grade.
The important thing here is that you get PF Points, slowly. Make sure to participate in the Short leagues as often as possible for a small, but more frequent, amount of PF Points. You can then exchange the PF points for the staff you want. Don't buy materials.

FOB missions are end-game stuff. The rewards are good and there are several events going for it.
In short, you'll steal staff and resources from others. But they can hit you back.
You should build FOB's ASAP though, since more FOB's = more staff to send on deployment missions = more volunteers = faster upgrading of your staff.

Another tip is that you can put staff under direct contract. Look for it on in the staff management menu.
This means you'll never lose that staff member, they'll never be deployed and can't get killed in FOB missions. Use this for those uniquely skilled staff members.

On my second playthrough I upgraded my base development platforms on my FOB's first. It seemed to make getting materials to build the rest easier since the processing time decreases and automatic mining yielded larger results. You can get plenty of resources everywhere though. FOB missions or just out on the field.
Just keep your eye out for containers, those are always worth a fulton in free roam.

If you are selective about your PF points and deployment missions you'll have a better time during missions and free roam.
It's everyone's first instinct to just start fultoning everything in sight, but it really isn't necessary. It's good to keep an eye out for S ranks, vehicles, weapons and containers but the mission comes first, Boss.

So drop that shitty tranq sniper rifle and deploy with a couple of other toys to have a better time.

Why don't they just make a game about what Big Boss was doing while shit went down in Afghanistan, which was starting the Zanzibarland Uprising? Give it traditional MGS gameplay and have it involve meeting the original bosses and how he took over and everything.
