Anyone have any advice for a melee character?

I don't care if it's melee or unarmed, and I can't decide between going for a drunken brawler with Party Boy, or investing heavily in luck/agility for VATS stuff.

A guy I know made a quest/companion mod called Strangers Abroad. I thought it was pretty good although I'm sure it probably breaks the lore in some way because the companion is a Britbong.

Low levels are much tougher than higher levels. It'll be hard for you to get the rhythm of blocking, but you'll get the hang of it eventually. You can trigger a special animation by double-tapping the key when attacking a human opponent; I recommend doing this because these animations seem to override an enemy's block. But be careful, because an enemy's execution move can also ignore your block!

Oh boy here we go...
>Nat is Piper's Daughter
>Sarah Lyons faked her death
>Legate Lanius' suit is Power Armor
>Vulpes Inculta is a Synth
>Most, if not all, of the Institute's "technological breakthroughs" were co-opted from a pre-war source. The Molecular Relay was either stolen from the Zetans or a damaged Big MT probe, Bioscience's research into rad immune vegetation was made possible through GECK, the Synth Fabricator is basically a jury-rigged Auto Doc that prints people, Gen I/II Synths are streamlined Assaultrons, etc.
>The Institute had once created groups of reproductive-capable Gen III Synths to help repopulate with science staff in the event of disease outbreak/total underground societal collapse. Members of this group included A2-31 (Harkness, once cited as an "advanced prototype" by Zimmer), G5-19 (Curie's body) and M7-97 (Danse)
>The Synth!Shaun you were given at the end of the MQ was patched with all the extra organic bits to make him a real boy. He grows up to travel with the SS, and eventually gets with Nat
>The Children of Atom were formed by survivors of the Children of the Cathedral. Where they once believed in the Dark God that would lead them to Unity, after the Cathedrals destruction they came to worship the power of Atom in the hope he will lead them to Division.
>The Gunners are the functional descendants of the National Guard units that existed in and around Boston, it'd be cool to have their upper leadership actually be a small group of Enclave officers and troops, running things from the shadows.

I choose to believe this too. And also
>Nate was friends with Elliott Tercorien (from MZ) in the army
>Minutemen victory is canon
>Once the Institute is gone Nate throws himself into the role of General
>Vault 88 becomes the Minutemen's main R&D facility. Curie becomes Chief Scientist, and Barstow becomes Assistant Chief
>Sturges becomes Chief Engineer, Isabel is Assistant Chief
>Vault Tec Rep becomes Chief Administrator, Sheffield becomes Chief Provisioner
>Preston and Ronnie are 2nd and 3rd in command respectively
>Danse is given command of the most elite MM unit consisting of Cait, MacCready, Strong, X6, and Ada
>Longfellow acts as commander of the Far Harbor detachment
>Jezebel becomes the Minutemen version of PAM
>I'm sure I'll contrive some insane reason for Gage to become a Minutemen officer too
>Piper has unrequited feelings for Nate, who never loves again after Nora's death
>Years after the end of the game Nate launches an attempt to reform the CPG. The Minutemen are absorbed into it as the military branch, and they grow into an NCR-tier nation.

The SS encourages every settlement to field a baseball team.
The WRVR radio station is brought to full functionality.A 50,000 watt transmitter can be picked up in Penn from Boston.
Moe Cronin becomes the radio play by play guy.

This leads to baseball being brought back to unite the North East and fulfilling John Henry Eden's dream.

It's a stupid argument to tell somebody that the backstory of the PC and the prevalence of it has no impact on roleplaying.

There's a reason to go to start in most RPGs are vague as hell and start the character with amnesia/in a prison. It gives you complete freedom to craft your character, instead of just tack on plot points to an already defined character.

Fallout 3 also had worse locations like Little Lamplight. Also actually 5 has more weapons by 3 even when it comes to unarmed weapons. There are very few actually unique weapons that look aesthetically different with most having a name and damage tweaks. The legendary system and drops just makes it seem like there are less real uniques.
>>
>>152381268
are you fucking stupid.
of course i do those things. it's just proof of a shitty RPG if the story forces you to pretend it's not happening in order to roleplay.
That's the mark of a game that wasn't built for roleplaying.

The thing that New Vegas did right was that every mission you went on and story that you progressed, your character didn't bring anything to it. Your character is only invested in things that you the Player are. That's good roleplaying.

I do it, but I shouldn't have to ignore the words coming out of my characters mouth. Whatever comes out of my character's mouth should be adaptable for any roleplaying scenario.

I can make up a million reasons for why the Courier has his job, whether he was low on caps or somebody berated him for being a free loader who can never keep a job down. Explain how I roleplay away "was a soldier, fucked a woman he clearly loves dearly and had a kid."
>>
>>152381658
Fallout 4 has virtually no uniques. It has the Deliverer, Kremvh's Tooth (technically) and maybe Grognak's Axe. And the only unique I've found in the DLCs is Atom's Judgment.

All the "unique" weapons are just weapons with a certain assortment of mods with some useless legendary effect. They look identical to any weapon with the same mods aesthetically.
>>
>>152381878
>Courier looking for revenge
>being as set as "upper class married soldier/lawyer with a happy marriage and a child"

What did Courier 6 do before that final job? What was the job right before it? What was their last delivery? What was their love life like? Their education?

The Lone Wanderer in 3 is a blank slate, who you were in the vault didn't matter that much because you were a kid and you were born in the vault. Who you are as a person gets developed AFTER that. That's a real clean slate.

You can't compare those two backstories with F4. You honestly can't.

If I want to play a game where I'm the child of a dead god that's awesome. But what if I don't?

If I'm a nameless adventurer I can be anything, and that's the POINT of Roleplaying.

Considering the fact that we've had the last bit of DLC getting leaked and everyone who was interested in it having already played it and talked it to death leaving nothing new for this general to discuss, you must be looking forward to the next 1-5 years. One year until we get some really good mods and another 4-5 before we get the next game. Fallout 4 is massively disappointing
>>
>>152382807
>If I'm a nameless adventurer I can be anything, and that's the POINT of Roleplaying.
I just got to this thread, but I wanted to point out that you don't understand what roleplaying is. Roleplaying is playing a role. Whether you establish the role yourself or someone dictates it to you is irrelevant.
>>
>>152383226
Popularity =/= good roleplaying.

stop trying to move the goalposts.
If a game has medicore roleplaying it's a bad roleplaying game. It may be a perfectly fun very popular game, but it's not good for roleplaying.

Fallout 4 had the oppurtunity to be a good roleplaying game like New Vegas and it wasn't and that's sad. That's all I'm saying.
>>
>>152381292
Fallout 1 you are a Vault Dweller and it hints that you are one that thinks leaving the vault might be worth it at one point.
Fallout 2 here is your elder and your fellow tribespeople and everyone will call you a tribal.
Fallout 3 you were not born in this vault but raised in it by your father and Amata is your friend and you escape and eventually find your father.
NV. You are a couriet and have been one long ebough to do enough jobs to pass bye Hopeville at least twice and to get captured.
4. You are a lawyer/military vet married hapilly with a loyal robot in a place seemingly largely safe from the resource shortage and looking for a dog and get frozen in cryo and set out to get revenge and find your SON!

I would agree that 3 and 4 are more restrictive but 2 also has some holdups and 1 and NV have their own limits.

Prison is popular but generally implies you have committed a crime unless you want to pull the I WAS INNOCENT route or amnesia.

Also there are a lot of rpgs with more set backgrounds that are fondly regarded and then there is stuff like jRPGs where you have almost no narrative control and sometimes not even build control.

Cryolator
Tesla Rifle
Severed Assaultron Head
Alien Blaster
Deliverer
Broadsider
Atom's Judgement
Grognak's Axe
Junkjet (you can technically get two, but it's otherwise unique)
World Series Bat
Krvemth's Tooth

Are all unique aesthetically with some even having special legendaries and there are more of them that aesthetically look the same but with unique legends or legends not normally on those types of weapons.
Pickman's Blade
Zeta Gun
Striker (which has a mod that is a minor change of ammo)
December's Child
Automatic Laser Musket
Shem Drowne Sword
Lucky Eddy
Final Judgement (Rapid-Fire does not spawn on heavy weapons)
Death From Above (Nimble does not spawn on heavy weapons)
Survivor's Special (Bloodied is normally a melee effect)
Big Boy (Two-Shot does not spawn on heavy weapons)
Skipper's Last Stand (Resilient does not spawn on heavy weapons)

and Nuka World adds a few more like democracy wackamole and zapper gun which you can unlock a unique gun.

I like NV's weapon variety more and consider the legendary system a mess but 3 really doesn't have as many as you think.

Not him but I still would have no choice in the matter. Unless they let me choose between being a family man, loner, etc and different occupations and whatnot throughout like a flashback or something, kind of like the intro to Fallout 3 where they skim through the first 19 years of your life and I got to make choices that molded my character. I'd be okay with that.

I still prefer no backstory so I can literally make shit up if I wanted to. My courier was actually part of the alien race that was marooned in the Mojave and the alien with the Alien Blaster attacked me because I betrayed them back on our home planet.

I'm talking about weapons that are unique counterparts of normal weapons. Like the Deliverer is a unique variant of the common 10mm pistol. Weapons like the Cryolator, Broadsider etc. are cool but there not unique versions. I'll give you the world series bat, though. I forgot about that one.

We're on the same page when it comes to NV's uniques though. Literally every unique weapon except for the Liberator looked different than their normal versions, I liked that a lot. For me if you can't tell the difference between the normal and unique when it's in your hands, it's not unique.

Two questions:

It seems like most of Nuka World is Radiant, with the ability to to conquer settlements and build them raider style open to anyone that succeeds the main quest. The only difference is that you don't need the Local Leader perk to build raider stuff.

The radiant stuff might be considered reduced in that each raider settlement needs normal settlements to control for it to have food, and when you set a settlement as a dominated settlement it no longer is build-able and doesn't need to be defended.

The parts inside the park are more fun exploration/survival but the only really morally negative thing is that you are giving over parts of the park to EVIL raiders.

I can agree with that. Fallout 4 is a roller coaster of ups and downs. The design for all robots is quite good especially with automotron. The new deathclaws are goat. The only robot I don't like is assaultrons, they're cool but don't really fit in. They seem too strong lorewise for their size. New sentry bots are goat.

That being said I never liked their design in general since the first game.

4 was pretty good about diversifying the enemies in general. Look at how in 3/NV feral ghouls were just fast zombies but now they play dead, crawl in through windows and crap and will really sprint and completely throw themselves at you, the dismemberment is neat too.

God DAMN it.

Guys, how the fuck do you place a raider flag at a "raider outpost"?

I just convinced a bunch of bumfuck settlers to leave some ass-end of nowhere settlement, and while my raider crew showed up to set up shop I can't seem to place a flag at all. Solid ground, earth, wood, water, it doesn't even seem to show up at all. It's not in a red outline or anything, it's just... not there. I mean I can highlight one of the three flags as IF I was going to plant them (Pack, Disciples, Operators), but for some reason the usual blue glowing indicator so you can determine where to set your buildable doesn't even show up. What exactly am I doing wrong here?

Can't advance the Nuka World questline unless I get it.

The only guns in the game with a weight that even makes sense are the plasma and laser guns, and the heavy weapons, other than the missile launcher.

Nuka Dark
Nuka Wild
Nuka Orange

Newka-Cola
Nuka-Berry
Nuka-Buzz
Nuka-Cide
Nuka-Cooler
Nuka-Fancy
Nuka-Free

BALANCE. It was designed with normal mode in mind and the very light mitigates it sothey probably didn't mine it. 4's late survival gets a bit clunky in a variety of ways anyways so it might have been more focused on testings at early levels.

I mean, that's the problem with them in general. They're just an extremely uninspired enemy, and I wouldn't bat an eye if they were cut - they don't even make sense being in the Commonwealth.

The digging mechanic was kind of neat, but I hate being ambushed by them out of nowhere repeatedly in the overworld. If they spawned above ground, and you had a chance to see them first, I think it would be a lot better. Well, that and if they didn't dig instantly - you could see their movement under the dirt as they dig towards you, instead of an instant teleport.

I dont get your first question they are raiders they exist

Also i dont think any faction would like siding with the raiders

They have you attack the BOS
Raiders have you do the polar opposite of the minutemen

Not him, but since part of the questline of Nuka World is taking over settlements, the Minutemen will tell you to stop, then disavow you completely.

There are some repeatable quests that ask you to kill Railroad Agents and BoS, but there's no faction effect as far as I can tell.

>>152426048
My best answer is that MM or Institute might work best. Be frustrated with how you have to pass charisma for them to listen to commands and how they force you to do all the work. You are devestated from all the horrific things that have happened and the MM were just a tool to find your son. Then say fuck it and go Big Boss.

Institute don't give a shit. Just have your character like power and you are using the raiders to ensure that the Commonwealth has even less of a chance of recovering/tributes funnel to your raider bases and then the synths pick it up and bring it to the Institute.
>>
>>152426749
Essentially, you get lured in but are saved by the unhappy underling of the current boss, who leaaves you a weapon to kill him. You're then titled the Raiderboss, but by talking to some of the enslaved traders, you can unlock the option of destroying the raider faction and freeing the people. It doesn't feel like a huge heelturn, but I suppose it depends on which point in the story you start the DLC from.
>>

>>
>>152427253
No, you can be. They're just generic agents so you can probably get away with it. The repeatable quests aren't something you have to do at all, either. The only unavoidable conflict is between the Raiders and Minutemen.

Some of the repeatable missions need you to either provide backup for a group of raiders, or to clear a group guarding a supply cache. Sometimes, the people attacking or guarding are Railroad.

Question for Nuka World peeps.

Since I don't want to let the raiders into the commonwealth, but don't want to miss out on a bulk of the content, how viable is it to help the raiders take over the park, then turn around and kill them all? Or are most of the raider quests just "Go to this zone and kill the enemies so we can move in" and the rest of the content is unaffiliated side quests?

>A flying aircraft carrier.
A flying aircraft carrier built by a single west coast orgin division of xneophobic technological horders who only concern themselves with weapons, toxins, biological warfare, and vehicles of war. Iraq doesn't own the black hawks invading their land so why should the east coast?

This is getting fucking arbitrary as fuck. If they don't desire to preserve then it isn't alive. Fucking some humans aren't interested in having children. Some others can't. Synths want to preserve themself. Part of the appeal of Acadia is them being able to survive and also accept that they are indeed synths and not have to hide from that reality. They want to continue to live and would rather not die.

Also this is basing assumptions on humans that age, need to eat, need to drink, and need to sleep. If you could turn off the capability to procreate to get all of these things or immortality does that mean you lose life?

I'm confident in the potential thereof, as humans are just binary physical stuff (synapses firing or not firing). There is no reason to thing that the same binary stuff (just made out of slightly different material) is incapable of sapience.

Now, whether or not a giving synthetic creature actually is sapient or not is going to be impossible to determine, if not wholly nonsensical to even ask.

I would determine it in the same way that I determine you, which is that you seem like you're a person, so I'll give you that..

Not all but I was using it because of how many of them are sterile. Mules in particular. The number of female mules that have reproduced is extremely low as an example although it gets messy. Also synths arguably might be into sex. Keep in mind this is the same setting where Miss Edna marries the teacher of all things. Then there's Magnolia who is into having sex with people and can after some flirting, Curie can be romanced and fucked, Dance can be romanced, and Deacon's wife/love was a synth and if memory serves me from dialogue that I haven't heard in a long time they were trying to have children.

Why not just add a "consumable" item that adds a magic effect, and make the MGEF return the consumable + add one of each of the items to the caster? That way the user doesn't have to muck with the console, and still has the option of getting more of the items whenever they want to. Make everything valueless and weightless to prevent exploits, and you should have no trouble.

Right, I remember the that activating phase of neurons is all-or-nothing, but there is more to messaging there than that. Computers literally do nothing but fire a high/low voltage pulse, but individual firings of neurons are never equivalent, because there are so many different combinations. I don't think it's reasonable at all to compare the functioning of neurons to circuits.
>>
>>152433461
but there can be a lot of combinations of a thing that isn't organic material

you are confusing the complexity with the stuff

I get that brains are WAY more complex than any computer has ever been. but that's just because they are more complex, not because one is organic and the other is synthetic
>>
>>152433385
>there is no reason why that stuff should be made out of one thing and not another
That's is far from a universal belief.

Hell even in the context of Fo4, as per Maxson (on Danse):
>~"didn't come from the womb of a loving mother [...] grown in the cold confines of a laboratory"
the BoS takes issue even with the provenance of mostly-biological matter, and anything more mechanical would purely qualify as either a machine or an abomination thereof.

I wasn't assuming anything like that, really. I was assuming the capability of a synthetic brain to behave like an organic one. Whether or not synth brains can is far beyond my ability to know. But also beyond my ability to know is whether or not your brain can do this. Instead, I just give the benefit of the doubt to anything that seems like it's doing that - probably ingrained in me. And it would be ingrained in you, as you would treat a synth the same as a human, until you learned that it was a synth. >>152434114
>Why haven't the Institute triggered the Singularity if this is the case; superior synthetic brains creating more sophisticated AI, those AI going on to create even more sophisticated AI?
Well they maintain a strict monopoly over the means of production, for one. Even if the synths are capable of designing progressively superior AI, they don't have the means to actually do it.

And it isn't even clear how synths are programmed either - dialogue with Amari in Emergent Behavior indicates that only some synths have the cognitive hardware necessary to interface with coded logic, so it's kind of space magic as to how the Institute is re-writing whole personality matrices at a biological level, at this point.
>>
>>152434648
but people who actually work in this field would agree with me

universality is meaningless with the vast majority of the population is utterly ignorant

>And it would be ingrained in you, as you would treat a synth the same as a human, until you learned that it was a synth. But learning that it was a synth wouldn't give you any more access to the working of its brain that you had before.

Synths give themselves away all the time, which means they fail at impersonating a human. There is a non 0% chance that a Synth can maintain it's impersonation, the longer they keep up the facade, the more real people they interact with, the faster they are exposed.

That gives you a little insight into the agenda of the Synth, or it's programmers.

And your point? They sometimes throw their synths out to assassinate and replace them sometimes and other times they kidnap, maybe interrogate, and then experiment on the humans before replacing them with a synth. Kasumi fools herself into believing she is a synth.
>>
>>152436043
I meant both the synths that replace specific individuals and other type 3 synths that impersonate 'generic' humans and infiltrate communities. Both types get exposed during the game.

Most people are basic and like stereotypical fantasy more.

Obsidian will be a dead company in a few years.

What projects do they have lined up for 2017 and beyond?

*crickets*

it certainly doesn't help that fo3 and fo4 feel like beth throwing some of their newer ideas for TES in and seeing how it works.

TES just has infinitely superior lore
I mean, it's not even close really.

And fantasy is cooler than post apocalypse shit. And given the nature of fantasy, the mods can seem less ridiculous. Vampire mods in fallout are stupid.

And honestly, I can't think of a single way in which TES is inferior to Fallout

Humans function according to their baseline programming. There is no escaping that fact. Why is something that can exhibit complexity and sentience at a human level less than a human? If you program something to act as a human would, when does it cross the line? Where is the line in sand, the distinction between acting the part and being it?

What park distribution is best? I'm going 2 for disciples, 2 for The Pack, and 1 for Operators. Any suggestions?

Butch DeLoria became a Brotherhood conscript after Broken Steel, and became a power armor technician. He was part of the first scouting parties from the Citadel to explore the Commonwealth, but was left behind during a hasty evacuation from a powerful radiation storm.

He was eventually rescued by a nearby group of settlers from Weymouth. Realizing he'd been abandoned, he opted instead to stay behind and help the settlers establish a foothold north of the glowing sea. His personality, charm, and experience in leading gangs, gives birth to the Atom Cats.

Two years before the events of Fallout 4, Butch has a massive falling out with Duke, and Butch wanders off into the Glowing Sea. He's never seen again, and the Atom Cats slowly try to forget his existence in their grief.

Because genetically different in humans with their lack of a need for sleep, water, and food? Or how they can't gain or lose weight and cannot age?

Also can't think of too many non-Institute infiltrating/spy synths that get outed from just doing normal things. Danse was outed because of DNA from both the BoS records and Institute data. Amelia Stockton was outed by a bunch of nutters that go on hunches and still have a non-100% of success, and Avery if you reveal the evidence of how DiMA killed the previous one.

>Kasumi fools herself into believing she is a synth.

Trauma stricken young adult develops special snowflake syndrome. So what? We're talking about synths, not people.

That's like arguing women can't give birth because your example of a woman is a tranny.

Provide evidence synths possess consciousness rather than simply ape human behavior, as part of their programming.

Is Nick conscious? Or is he simply programmed to 'act' like his programmer believed the real Nick Valentine would act? Why hasn't synth Nick adopted his own distinct persona?

>Implying Obsidian will still be alive

>>
>>152436942
He has, in the since that the real nick never lived through the post apocalypse as a synth

maybe that's how the real nick would have done this, but that doesn't make synth nick less conscious. that just means that he has a personality that is based off some dude
>>
>>152436634
remove an infant human from society, it's 'programming' they revert to an animalistic state. simply look at orphans or children that survive isolation in the wilderness, or are adopted by animals.

remove programming from a synth, it enters a vegetative state.

>>152436878
my point is they are designed to 'pass the test.' programmed for a specific function. you need to separate that from any claims of consciousness.
>>
>>152437057
He's still dependent on programming for his persona. 'He' can't be anything other than what he was programmed to be.
>>
>>152437409
We are all depending on our programming for our personae

That's irrelevant both to whether or not he is conscious and to whether or not he has a distinct personality
>>
>>152437628
I can change and grow, circumstances allow me a multitude of possibilities.

Nick will always be pretending to be a dead man.
>>
>>152437996
no, nick changes and grows

he's a totally different guy now, and he's had to cope with a lot of things

hell, he is different by the mere fact that he's a synth now, and he has to cope with that. not to mention the whole post apocalypse and all that

the real nick isn't like that at all. they may share some traits, but synth nick has undoubtedly become a different guy
