Why can't I control this drone?

It has an antenna, an RC block, and a camera, yet it's not in the ship menu and when I manually access it's control panel the Control button is greyed out

It's in my faction and I'm broadcasting, so why isn't it working?

It's probably a piece of fatwood, which is wood soaked up with sap. That stuff burns like crazy and thus makes very good tinder when you carve it into shavings.
They put it on a rope so you can fix it to your firelighting kit (fatwood burns so easily it's not even a problem if it's wet), and just grap it and shave a bit off when you need to start a fire.

If you can't find a new ship button, enter the G menu and look for a tool with a small ship icon, then put it on your toolbar.
Try all the rotation buttons: insert, delete, home, end, PgUp and PgDwn.
Ctrl+wheel changes the distance of the block.

Railguns have literally never been worth using, CRAMs have always been better than APS and before CRAMs even existed custom cannons were still better than APS.

Until Nick fixes APS magazine explosions (possibly when hell freezes over) APS won't be a competitive choice for killing ships. They're pretty much only useful for destroying aircraft.

Would my boat be more stable if I made the yellow areas out of heavier material and the pink areas out of lighter (lead/alloy for example), or the other way around (alloy/metal)?

Hulls are made out of alloy, they're hollow, have air pumps and a row of hydrofoils at the bottom. I'm trying to make the waterline as close to the middle of the first blue painted block row as possible, since that gives me the most speed and best handling.

It's one of those things that the community identified as being both broken (it's a fucked up calculation) and awful for gameplay, but Nick is too busy coming up with random features that nobody gives a flying fuck about like warp drives and particle cannons to fix bugs and design errors that actual impact gameplay.

Your CoM is sitting above your center of buoyancy, causing a slight list. One side of the hull drags slightly more because it's more submerged and you get a circle. We took out the base and flew into orbit, where we found a small outpost lined with fucktons of plasma turrets. We scouted out its weaknesses before we saw movement and nope'd out of there.
Turns out it is owned by one of the mods who is a bit of an asshole, so he'd either fight back with plasma or banhammers.

We didn't get shot down in that first encounter, but the defence turrets did manage to take out a cockpit window, leaving the captain dangerously exposed. That's when we realized the entire ship was made of plain steel and glass blocks, no armour at all.
Multiple people is fun, we can all take a turret while we fly, although they can be put onto auto mode as well.

Depends on whether you're the type that only builds small unpainted wooden buckets and then complains that other stuff is too strong when they get raped instead of gitting gud.

Easy and regular main campaign can be fun if you just build whatever, especially after the recent universal nerfs to both difficulties. Only play expert and godly if you want to build optimized stuff. Personally I only play on the latter and in turn find the beginning a rather tedious sealclubbing in turn.

DW is fun if you like stomping nazis and like enjoy RTS-esque gameplay, expect for the fact that you can't actually build your own boats so it isn't really /egg/ so moving on.

Glao is your choice if you want to build small as the campaign enforces a 3k volume limit. If you enjoy building small stuff like helicopters, PT boats and the like go here. Not sure how up-to-date it is currently as it has no one overseeing it though.

Ashes of the Empire is the obvious choice if you want to play with tonks and apart from the single island in DW it's the only official campaign with land combat. It also has a lowish 2k volume limit so again no big stuff for you (unless you play with the map editor, you cheating you) and it's still relatively new and FtD wasn't really designed with land combat in mind so a few problems are still being ironed out.

No, I fixed that, I already had it sit properly once but then I fucked up the pontoons by changing the positioning of the hydrofoils and whatnot in an attempt to make it 0.5 blocks higher.

Oh, that's easy. Your thrust is misbalanced for your CoM and CoD. Either raise the thrust, add downthrust in the nose or upthrust in the aft, or add thrust above the waterline.

If you're fine with the boat sitting a bit lower when not moving, thats easy enough then. Fill the white layer you want the waterline to be just under with nothing but hydrofoils, remove the hydrofoils lower down and the PID (or lua if that's your control method), add an ACB set to set all hydrofoils to 45 degrees every .5 seconds.

What I'd recommend then if you want the minimal solution is to add a pair of ACBs: One set to set drive proportion to .4 or so when speed is below half your top speed, the other to set drive proportion to 1 when speed is above half max. This will force slow starts and keep things controlled. Play with the values, see what works.

If you have a solid wall of hydrofoils set to 45 degrees and move at any meaningful speed, the hydrofoils will pop up to just above the water. So you put a shitton of hydrofoils on the level above where you want the water line and shit floats where you want it.
Putting them lower would drive the waterline down. Putting them at the bottom gives you a pseudo hovercraft with enough speed. Pic related, the thing has basically zero water contact due to the hydrofoils in the "pontoons".

As it stands I have it drop down to about 20m/s during combat because it's a tricky beast to manage. Charging straight at the enemy makes their weapons more effective when it's perfectly happy blasting from 2km away, and setting a wide angle broadside exposes the sides when all the firepower and armour is focused up front. If I ever git gud at programming LUA I might make an AI that loiters at range with rolling S maneuvers. Better yet since I use them in pairs, see if I can make them scissor :3

Plus I think she's kind of beautiful and jet engines would spoil the silhouette.

Having a go on working on a design for the new Eggpyrion flagship. Looking at:

2 double door hangers
either 1 3x6 or 2 2x3 farm units
internally repairable thrusters

here's what ive come up with for the engineering (thruster + power) deck.

Green being thrusters, light blue generators.
The square thruster being an up or down thruster depending if the deck is placed on top or under the ship. On top is probably better, given most of the pummelling the ships get is underneath flying over things you didn't notice.

shown here with 1 XL gen and 1 L backup, but it could run on 4 L generators.

I was traumatised by math with interactions with my schizophrenic mother, I basically lock up when asked to do any amount of advanced calculation mentally, or using even slightly advanced concepts, such as dividing fractional polynomials, which was the final nail in the coffin of me giving a shit about math. Detection basically falls into two categories: Finding the enemy and pinpointing the enemy. You don't need much to find them: Your 360 radar should do that job just fine.
Pinpointing though needs a bit more: You need detectors and between them have both good bearing estimates and good range estimates. You also need this for all arcs you intend to fire into.
But in your case, your only guns are turret mounted. If your turret is pointed at something to shoot it, so is your turret-mounted detection gear.
If you had, say, hardmounted guns pointing to the sides, you'd need better detection in all directions instead of just where the turret's pointed. But you don't so you don't.

Pretty much this. A 360 radar for overall detection, plus a coincidence rangefinder and laser tracker are enough for accurate bearing and range data. Hit Q on one of the detection items, and hit both 'auto detect' buttons. It will assign priority to the detection part that is best at any given role, which will be coincidence rangefinders for bearing, and laser tracker for range.

Cameras and such are useful as backup detection if you're getting blasted with a lot of EMP and are worried about your eyes getting popped, or your design doesn't accomodate a 360 detector (too exposed, no room for AI connections, too many jutting parts blocking view etc) you can put a bunch of 90 degree camera/radar/sonar/etc in every direction and they will automatically pass on the target data to more accurate sensors. They're also dirt cheap and don't require much processing power. IR sensors are a passive detector which is useful for stealth craft and night fighting, but they have poor accuracy.

Local test concluded for the now.

Grindan shaps works fine. Rotors rotate, pistons pist. Drills drill. NPCs are still retarded and ugly.

New building system is not that bad, once you get into it. The UI is still horrible. Made a double piston drill blow up with timers, but they were probably just full. Poprock'd.

Verdict: Inconclusive. You folks seem to be riding the Empyron train pretty hard, so I feel less motivated to fight for population. I dunno. I yearn for spees, but I am also unsure what I want to do with that yearning.

Exactly, I had a friend who was an EWAR wizard in the E1/CPU days of organized SpaceCombat. He would fly an EWAC ship that would dump vampire mines in asteroid fields and radio targeting data in realtime to allied ships.

The vampire mines were fucking cool, as they were made entirely of gates in a tiny box, and upon detecting a ship it would go to it, targetfind resource containers, unweld props to get to it, latch on and drain it. CPU was hard to use efficiently as it required people to fuck with Assembler and memory chips, and other stuff to make use of it.
E1 was hard to use because of unwieldy UI.
And gates are way too simple to use because of the space and effort they take to set up. They also introduce numerous vulnerabilities, as it is simple to plant few backup E2 gates, as opposed to welding plates with tons of gates on them.
E2's simplicity and flexibility truly is both a blessing and a curse.

Just go through at least the first few levels of the tutorial (which you can do for free with the demo), read up on the wiki for stuff you don't know, maybe fuck around in peaceful mode to get a grip on things. You can find efficient templates for small things like furnace setups online, that you can easy expand on.
I bought it a few days ago after trying out the demo for an hour, had no idea how to do anything efficiently, first factory was a foundation of hack jobs supporting a clusterfuck structure of bodges, fields of inserters all over grabbing from supply lines to feed other supply lines, some of which just inadvertantly fed right back into themselves, assemblers just placed wherever I happened to be standing and had space. I just looked up ideas for layouts online, how fluid mechanics work, etc.
I still barely have any idea how to build big, but I'm having fun just picking it up as I go for the most part. Currently running low on oil for sulphur to make batters for laser cannons and blue gatorade, so I built a land bridge to the peninsula north to make a start on a second oil field, maybe get a railway going if I find more. I haven't touched circuits or logistics stuff yet, apart from some construction robots to clear some forest, I've seen some cool things done with them but they seem like overkill for my current scale.
