Also, why can that one guy seemingly turn into a darkbeast and switch back to being a human at will?

There's some kind of hipster bias where people don't take you seriously if your favourite game isn't something at least as old as the PS2.
I think it's fair to to say the honeymoon phase is over now. Its been well over a year since release and I can comfortably say BB is my favourite game of all time.

Miyazaki stated that the longer you resist your inner beast, the bigger, stronger, and more twisted it grows. People of the church and hunters tend to have naturally stronger wills due to all the crazy shit they're exposed to on a regular basis, and so they turn into larger beasts. What determines the specific 'species' of beast (cleric, blood-starved, dark, abhorrent, etc.) isn't really specified, but it may have something to do with the kind of blood you drank or simply the kind of personality you had as a human.

The suspicious beggar was no mere hobo, he was actually a specially trained hunter in disguise. And even though it looks like he can switch back and fourth between human and beast form, he can't. If you die while he's transformed, hell just 'reset' back to his non-hostile state like every other npc turned hostile will do until you get close enough to aggro him again. It's purely gameplay mechanics, just like with Gascoigne.

There's no way he can switch back and fourth. Everything in the game's lore hinges on the fact that a beast transformation is permanent and the only cure for it is death. He was being eaten away by his inner beast for so long that he probably considered himself one long before his actual transformation.

His ability to speak is strange, but it may have just been a final burst of human will before going completely feral, like with Ludwig.

Good Hunter just wins because he has fucking guns and guns are what made plate obsolete.

A high bloodtinge or hunter with some BMA in his pocket would annihilate them all. Guns really were that big of a game changer. You can bring up the Quicksilver Bullet argument, but those hurt everything including beasts. And he doesn't have just a pistol, he has a blunderbuss, the piercing rifle, two cannons and a chaingun.

That's to say nothing of his speed and agility.

It wasn't until muskets got better that massed fire could be reliable enough, and part of that had to do with a shift towards more maneuver in battlefield tactics. It's not some god weapon that instakills everything, especially something like Havel's or other heavier armor sets.

But even if it doesn't pierce the armor, you're still gonna be hit pretty hard.

You can kill Havel at SL1 by parrying him to death with your bare hand and a dagger.
Any given weapon in BB would mess up any NPC I'm DaS.
Having something like the bloodletter with the mobility and endurance you have in BB would be ungodly if put into the DaS universe.

Not to mention I don't think any of the other protags could handle the hunter dashing about like a mad cunt for hours and literally ripping their guts out with his bare hand.
Being able to parry from a distance is also obscenely OP in comparison.
In DaS you're meant to be cautious, methodical and fearful of every corner, in BB you're the one who knocks.

Love the entire series to death, and this isn't me saying BB is better or worse than the others.
Just think it would be a decisive victory for the hunter.
Chosen Undead would push him though.

Oh I know, and thing is, Bloodborne is a 18th/19th century derived setting, so by that point, not only has plate essentially disappeared, but the firearms are at the level that they would have disappeared because they had become powerful enough.

But read the rest of my post. Hunter has two portable cannons and a chaingun. Even if the pistol and blunderbuss were at a lower tech level, he's the winner because of the insane guns he has.

The chaingun sustains much longer attacks. Let's see a slab of stone stay sturdy under a hail of chaingun fire.

If you want to go full melee, there's plenty of heavy, hard hitting weapons in Bloodborne. Hell, the Saw Cleaver's follow up charged R2 pancaked enemies.

If you're using physical damage percent gems in your equipped weapon they'll increase your visceral damage as well
They'll still do decent damage, just not oneshots like skill builds
But parries are always viable on any build as long as you burrito since you said you're new, a burrito is where you parry, but instead of visceraling immediately you space yourself to swing at them, hit them, then hit R1 again to visceral them right when they take damage from your swing for stacked damage

Is there any good reason to use the kirkhammer over Ludwigs blade?

I mean I guess if you're going with investing the absolute minimum amount of dex possible it deals more damage but other than that it feels like the blade is superior in just about every way that matters.

I ask because for some reason or another I prefer the hammer by a wide margin. Not sure why, chalk it up to I feel like its more satisfying to use.

The way I see it, Cainhurst's forbidden blood was Queen Yharnam's blood. Chances are Cainhurst were Yharnam's nobility before the theocratic Healing Church took over and they all became separated.

It's why Annalise wants a child of blood, she's akin to another Queen Yharnam, or wants to be at least. Theirs is Pthumerian blood, filtered through them, like Healing Chirch blood is filtered through Blood Saints, or bred might be a better term. It might explain why Cainhurst enemies like Bloodlickers and Gargoyles are found in Chalice Dungeons - they aren't Cainhurst type beasts from Cainhurst blood, they're Pthumerian beasts.

Insight was their chance to do a World Tendency type mechanic properly, since it's fairly easy to manipulate.

Higher insight should have spawned tougher enemies where there was none previously and also increased the chances of random Bloodgems dropping from enemies. Also being above 40 insight should have spawned Bell-Maidans even if you wernt cooping. Being above 70 should have allowed two invaders at once.

I love how Ebrietas and Rom's boss arenas are inverted versions of each other, and represent themselves.

Rom is, as her title says, vacuous. She has no thoughts in her head, despite the eyes on her brain. Her arena is bright, but empty. It's a void, formless. There is no definition.

Ebrietas, on the other hand. Her arena is dark, cramped, full of graves. It's the Altar of Despair because Ebrietas is locked away and forgotten, left with her grief and guilt.

Fuck man, they could've done so much more with the oath system. Building on those ideas: There should been a choir oath for defending upper cathedral(would've brought life to an otherwise empty area), a yahar'ghul kidnapper oath that functions like mound makers, a graveguard oath for defending the Woods(it is after all a graveyard of Great Ones), and I really do think a gravelord-esque oath for chalices would've been fantastic.

I often ruminate on things that could've been in this game. I really wish that there was just one *large* chalice that was connected to the game world that changed on each playthrough. Early marketing for chalices made it seem that way.
I really wish we got to explore the research hall and grand cathedral proper in real world yharnam. The view from hemwick makes it apparent that the building extends backwards a few hundred metres at least and has more skybridges akin to the one that the failures fight takes place on.

I wish they gave us shadows' robes, logarius' robes, descendants garb, labyrinth warrior garb, Willems robes and headdress, Ludwig's actual set(it was definitely unique despite having the typical shawl draping, just based on the tattered version of it we see in the fight), the caped version of the decorated old hunter garb that the saif hunters wear, fuck maybe even a winter lantern head that causes slow frenzy buildup for griefing. I JUST WANT MORE ;.;

Why didn't anyone tell me sooner how phenomenally good the Amygdalan Arm is for PvE? This thing makes gem grinding a breeze, flinching fatties twice with the uncharged R2, hardly uses any stamina either. Plus it's just fun to swing around.

I am convinced that the Altar of Dispair was originally meant to do a whole lot more than it does now. It's setup exactly like a Covenant thing in other games. Same with Djura, old Yharnam screams "Darkroot Forest type invasion zone". But it sadly just doesn't exist.


I wish Oathe Runes did stuff as well, Vileblood one should remove the health penalty whilst invading, League should increase coop health (it does already but 2% is pointless). Hunter of Hunters should have been hostile to anyone who has killed a friendly NPC or more than X number of hosts, instead of the random chance we have now. Executioners should have been able to invade Vilebloods even with no Bell Maidan, or after the boss is dead, with a unique invasion message. Hyperthetical Djura Covenant should have auto-invaded in Old Yharnam and also make every enemy in the area non-hostile,

I wonder what gems they'd drop? Ludwig could drop STR scaling (maybe cap at 50) with 21.5% Arcane as a secondary. Gems specifically made for HMS and Wheel, but lackluster on anything else.

Orphan could drop Brainsucker type gems (shitty primary but huge secondary) but Bolt instead of Arcane.

Laurence would fire gems of some kind, maybe just garunteed 27% Fire gems, since they are such a pain to get from Watchers. Could be other shapes as well.

FRC Maria would drop Abysall SKL and BLT scaling gems. Since those are sorely missing.

FRC failures would drop Durability UP gems, failing once again to provide any reason to exist.

Every layer gets you two insight guaranteed from the boss and whatever extra from Madman's Knowledge or Great One's Wisdom you find lying around. So that's six insight minimum per dungeon, and if it's an easy dungeon you can crunch through it in about ten minutes, and that's if you're slow.

Pure Arcane is really fun and it's pretty easy to wreck bosses with 70+ Arcane Hunter Tools. Kinda depends if you want to be an Ayy or Beast, Strength Beast wrecks bosses with free Beasthood but is riskier compared to Hunter Tools. Pure Arcane might be more difficult to gem up, Strength builds only have to deal with Headless Bloodletting and Watchers for Heavy Abyssals and Physical gems. Arcane has to deal with Elder, Abhorrent, Hotdog, Watchers, and Bone Ash Hunters.

Step 4. Smack Old HMPH to half health, then mash square until he dies
Step 5. Use your ludicrously powerful bolt Saw Spear to fuck up Hotdog's entire existence
Step 6. Use your newly minted ludicrously powerful fire Saw Spear to fuck up Abhorrent Beast's entire existence
Step 7. Stand supreme at the top of the ARC LYFE BAYBEE

Optional step. for Str/Arc builds:
Bolt Spear/Saif and Accursed Brew/Executioner's Glove your way through Amygdala's healthbar X number of times

It's really not that bad. The only thing that's really annoying is Ebrietas, since Abhorrent Beast is only hard if your damage isn't good but you can use your stronk as fuck bolt Spear to get the fire gems you need to make him your bitch. Oil Urns and fire Saw Spear L1 or fire Whirly running R2 does criminally high damage.

There are no right hand Bloodtinge weapons from Powder Kegs so 50 Blt is a waste. 50 Strength is more worth it and the Cannon would still hit hard at base Blt. Djura's and Charred Hunter are known Powder Keg attire, though I think you can get away with using Old Hunter set since they use Powder Keg weapons as well. Stake Driver, Boomhammer, Whirligig Saw, Rifle Spear, Gatling Gun, Cannon, Piercing Rifle, and Molotovs are the weapons they use, might be more but that's what I remember.

Boomhammer is great for PvP, 50 Strength makes it a monster with Heavy Abyssal and Blunt gems. Whirligig Saw even more so.

I want to be Ebrietas's friend. She seems lonely, and though my lowly unenlightened mind would make me a shit companion I'm better than nothing. And I wouldn't even ask for her blood for healing.

Like the other anon said, you'd be better off with 50 Str and no BLT. You could even invest in Arcane to make better use of the Boomhammer buff. You get used to the Stake Driver after a while, its strength isn't the Falcon Punch but rather the speed it has in both forms. That shit stings even if you only get a few hits in. I'd also consider other brutal looking weapons like the Saw Cleaver and the Beast Cutter to be acceptable. Attire doesn't really matter, as long as you're not repping the Cainhurst degenerates or Healing Church fucking shits. Like the other guy said, the Kegs are linked to the Charred set as well as Djura's gear, so try and mix and match with parts of those.

This is what I'm at so far.
For a fire weapon I was probably going to go fire whirly. I was thinking of church pick for bolt because of the thrust causing additional damage to kin.

Thrust is not a damage modifier, it is a different form of physical damage like blood and blunt. You don't get bolt+thrust, you get bolt or thrust.

Well that really solved my dilemma then.
Merely a question of how to distribute the remaining 4 levels between END and VIT then. I think pumping END is the way to go

Bolt Pick won't do any extra damage to kin beyond their natural weakness to bolt, I'm afraid. It's different with serrated weapons stacking with fire because the bonus is inherent to the weapon, not the damage type. When you convert a weapon, it removes all the physical damage- including thrust- and turns it elemental.

I run fire Whirly and bolt Saw Spear, though given that I can't use the Church Pick but you could use it and the Whirly, then I'd say go for the bolt Pick.

As for how to spread your levels, endurance is probably the right choice provided you're comfortable with your vit.

Not him but Church Pick is pretty good for Arcane builds. I'd put the rest into Vit, it's not too hard to live with base End even with Strength weapons. I use the Wheel and HMS with 12 End just fine.

Cannon at 7 Bloodtinge (Military Veteran origin) has 607, Gatling Gun at 182. At 50 Bloodtinge Cannon has 804 and Gatling has 241.

Bloodletter is a Church weapon, not Powder Keg. The damage difference for Cannon and Gatling Gun isn't worth getting 50 Bloodtinge over 50 Strength. Just use BMA for the Cannon if you want it to hit harder, not the Gatling Gun though, it only applies to the first bullet.

You're looking at like 200 extra damage, tops. It's worth it if you're running a Bloodletter build, but otherwise you're better off not touching BLT. On my a Powder Keg I have 50 Str and 25 Arc, and the L1 buff gives me like 350 extra damage with a Waning Fire gem from Amy. Combine with Oil Urns for some laughs. Also the Gatling has a gem slot, but even with one it does about 75 per tick against players. Like the other guy said, just BMA the Cannon if you really want to blow shit up. You won't be using it much anyway.

Better than DkS3? Probably. The DLCs generally have better level design than the base games. That being said, DkS3 had some really solid level design. I think the game with the least improvement between base levels and DLC was Bloodborne, and that's largely just because Bloodborne already had such great level design. I think DkS3 already has some of the best individual level design in the series. Settlement and Archives are S+.

Did you create an FRC Depth 5 root dungeon? Only one is required, and you'll need all root dungeons to access all the glyphs.
