Let's say there's a bunch of objects that have to move in a certain pattern. Should these objects contain their own pattern or should it be held in a manager?

Making the tall rectangle flash white was going to give me a seizure with a box at that size, so it will use the toned down version. Ice Block is also now functional [again] with improved hit detection. It can block projectiles [fire attacks 1 shot it] and hinders enemy movement. Also damage enemies if it spawns inside of them or falls on top of them. Now to plan out the thing's attacks.

rather than create a class that handles all the movement for all your enemies, create a class that creates an object/function that dictates how the enemy moves and then give that to the enemy. This way you can easily switch it out, modify the AI and have each enemy react individually. It's a much cleaner way to do it.

Well, all the clutter models i've done so far are having the intended effect, I figure if I make perhaps 50% more of them it will really start feeling like a exploration cabin. (Need clutter like tools, have none of them right now).

But man, do I hate that you can't "recenter" objects in UE4. I often model things in sets, for example 8 different food cans. But they are separated in the FBX scene so that they can easily be textured, but when imported into UE4 every separate model has its pivot point offset by how much the model was offset in the FBX scene.

§I could save literal hours if anyone know a easy fix for this.

What the fuck man there is literally "Import transform" setting in mesh editor that let's you do exactly that. Set new values, reimport (there is a button for that, don't throw the mesh out and then put it back in.)

Also when you import in all those useful settings that lazy fucks skip there is also Import Transform tab. So you can recenter your meshes when you import them.

Seriously did you think they centered every model at Epic instead of adding this to their engine?
>>
>>152252943
a lot of devs end up being trans, it's a serious risk. I'd estimate there's a 15% chance you'll end up in panties.
>>
>>152255485
yeah, doing it by myself shouldn't be too hard. But there are 2 reasons why I want to use something already made:
1. I will work with artists, so they can change the behavior later if they like, easily, without me having to setup a lot of editor stuff.
2. It's supposed to already work without bugs.

But thanks for your input though.

I have question about blocking.

I was thinking about making 2 types of blocking enemies
>with normal shield, has 2 blocking stances, low and high and if you do high attack and it blocks it with high block, you can do low attack and damage the enemy
>with tower shield, blocks both low and high attacks

And then magical variants of those which can block spells too. How does this sound?

>>152255849
It takes some time to get used to. If I set HP value to like 100 or something (so they can take around 5 hits) I can kill them without getting hit once, so they are not complete bullshit (even without using spells, which will make the fights easier). It just feels annoying because they are only enemies currently that aren't like braindead.
>>
>>152255554
you know what I hate though? when you add the skeletal mesh component to a Character, you have to rotate it 90 degress and lower it to the floor. And you even have to do that with their own Mannequin guy. Why the hell didn't they just build that shit so it's facing the right direction to begin with?

>Nicely ask for help
>One guy not even having read the post calls me names while describing how to fix an unrelated problem

Sometimes I forget I'm on 4chan.

The problem was that since the meshes separating on import caused a "reimport" request to import the whole model back in previous versions, I'm glad to see that they apparently fixed this recently in blender since I can now properly import sub-meshes from an fbx made in it which is something i previously was unable to, so you misunderstanding my question actually helped me in the end.

Now I just need to go back and re-export and import all models made with previous versions of blender, which thank god is only like 7.

Music popped into my head and it took me a full five minutes to identify where it came from. A short and simple, but pretty MIDI track for a collab I spend a long time following, years ago.

One day the forums it was hosted in collapsed, causing the loss of much work followed by the death of the project. It fills me with a vague feeling of melancholy that's hard to shake off.

Here's a moment of silence to all the dead games out there, to all the devs who didn't make it.
Time wants them forgotten. They will not be.

The bar for mobile games is incredibly low because of shovelware and megacorp freemium bullshit. Anyone who cares about mobile games enough to give them awards is going to absolutely asphyxiate themselves on any sort of passable art game that isn't aimed at ADD riddled children or designed to jew you every 10 seconds.

Also, the creators are probably the typical Seattle hipster crew who are friends with the right people and can get their game promoted by reviewers and award groups. Or yanno, they paid for the publicity.

To me the best use of blocking mechanics is for the player to have to block enemy attacks to get a safe hit in. Enemies that block are kind of tedious unless you make getting blocked dangerous and the enemy's block behaviour unpredictable.
For instance, I would retool your 'fast' high/low block guy as a guy who is constantly dodging and trying to tag you and will block you if you try to button mash attacks on him, then when you're blocked he will punish you with a big attack (that you could counter attack, maybe) or disarm you or something.
For you big constantly blocking guy, I might do something like making him completely invulnerable from the front, so that you have to dodge through him and hit him in the back, but if you're too slow he can swing around and nail you with his shield or quickly block you and punish you.

Say, I'm starting a 2D twin-stick shooter with some friends, and we're weighing our options on what to build it on.

None of us has the slightest idea about Unity, and we're miles more comfortable with game maker, but we agree on the thought that maybe learning Unity would be more beneficial for the project in the long run. Are there any major advantages to Unity if we're gonna be working exclusively on a 2D environment? Like, are there any things that Unity facilitates over game maker?

As a side note, we don't know C# either, but we kinda know our way with javascript, which is apparently also supported by Unity.

That's my main problem with the game. You could become some crazy monster but you can wield a sword perfectly fine. Also the harpies in the game are the worst kind of harpy. Wings and regular arms. Probably due to the 'you can do anything as anything without repercussions' aspect of it.

actual mechs wouldn't have rigid locked gear joints as those wouldn't be able to absorb nearly as much shock as something with more give
just look at excavators, they're mechanical but have a lot of wobbling when moving

regardless, as it stands it looks very amateurish, and some motion would add a lot of life to the game

They say the last 10% of a project takes 90% of the time. And the last 10% of that time takes another 90%. That's why most people never complete a project and games get released unfinished. Because every time you reach that last 10%, it becomes the first 10% all over again on into infinity.

Look up draw_sprite or draw_sprite_ext in the manual.

Don't listen to >>152260918 - this approach only works if your menu is no bigger than Continue/New Game/Quit.
If you're doing a 'Settings/Controls' sub-menu, for example, creating an object for every single fucking button is going to become a real mess real fast.

As a compromise, you can create a "menu parent" object that knows how to handle an array of strings (your options) and automatically display the appropriate text along with a button sprite.
Then make every single menu and sub-menu in your game an object inheriting from "menu parent". List every option in its array and give each of them a corresponding event_user that executes the right piece of code (toggle fullscreen, etc.). When switching between menus (i.e. main menu and settings menu) just create the new menu and destroy the current one.

A friend told me that having both platformer and topdown on a game can be very unpleasant, and he may be right

>Starts game as a topdown
>gets in the mood
>next level is a platformer

Players can see this a insult, and they are right to feel it his way, maybe that is why there aren't many games that mixes platformer and topdown graphics out there

Anybody else want to comment on this ?

The best way to implement this would be to start as one type and then do vehicle sections that are the other, like metal slug did.

Another way to do it could be to allow the player to flip the perspective papermario style. I've never been able to think of a way to make the idea not a gimmick and rip off though.

It's difficult to make multiple gameplay styles fit together with equal importance (i.e. there's no 'minigame' to the 'main game').
You've got to clearly market the game as both at once. You've got to keep the feel of your game in both. And finally, you've got to tie them together so they aren't entirely disconnected, and transition between both states if not seamlessly, at least cleanly.

In the end though I'm pretty sure it's doable. But it's not easy.
>>
>>152262593
That would be a hard transition to pull of unless you pulled a paper-mario/fez and allowed the player to rotate the perspective at will. Failing that you would want to introduce the changing perceptive in the first level and change it regularly so that the player understands that it's part of the game and it doesn't feel out of place.

And sometimes the elements by one are overshadowed by the other.

Like, I'd say that the Quest for Glory series felt still more point and click than RPG. Because those elements basically only let you choose three different solutions, there was no way for you to make any lasting decisions or have an impact on the story.

>>
>>152262425
ALttP tried that, when you get the feather and are allowed to jump. It was clunky as shit.

Many top down or isometric games with jump mechanics end up feeling off somehow. The best use of it I've seen is when it's a switch from side-scroller to top-down for certain areas, similar to Blaster Master.

Jumping when all you can see is the ground and the character's head isn't all that fun. You'd need a tilted perspective to make it work.

I cannot imagine a game built around that though, but give it a shot. There's obviously not many out there.

Would learning C++ be a a good starting point if I wanted to learn python? How similar are the languages as an absolute beginner?

Kind of a weird question, but I have a book on C++ programming and I would hate for it to go to waste.
>>
>>152266229
Python is easier and it's a better starting point to learn programming in general, so I'd do it the other way around.

not even close. Just learn python, if you want to learn python. It's easier to get into python than it is to get into C++.

I don't really get the whole moral angle when it comes to game pricing arguments.

It basically just comes down to supply and demand, right? And they figured that the demand for their supply would be willing to pay 20 bucks for their house simulator, like how those train and truck simulators have thousands of dollars worth of DLC.

I'm trying to come up with a good division of story & gameplay. We have a calendar with each chapter having roughly 12-16 usable days. Each day is split into Day & Night. During the day the character has to interact with an NPC, however during the night they have the option instead to organize missions/training/research, and doing so takes up a time slot.

These missions/training/research give rewards to make you better at doing future missions/training/research. Most missions are optional but every chapter they are 2 required missions that get progressively harder.

What is a good balance between days where they plan missions and days where they interact with NPCs at night (some NPCs are only intractable with at night). Should they be able to scrape by with 30% of their nights? 50%?

What strikes you all as a good balance?

The difference is that Gone Home only has a relatively short storyline to offer and not much else.

If you are a train enthusiast or like job simulators you get way more bang for your buck.

When you spend a decent amount of money on something interactive, you want it to last more than just an hour. I think the backlash wouldn't have been that vicious.

It probably didn't help that it wasn't entirely clear what the game would be about.

100k is peanuts though, you don't necessarily need to market it to make that much, word of mouth would work if your game was good enough and you emailed around to a few big review sites (don't think sending a few emails would count as marketing unless you are pedantic enough to believe that).
I know it's the oldest line but I have some ideas that would appeal to a large segment of /v/ as I believe I know what /v/aggots really love, so they could do my marketing.
I still don't get how they know for certain if you're fiddling the money or how much you're making unless it's some stupid simple equation of Google Play installs x cost. I could release on something like itch.io and I don't think they even report the number of purchases.

Idea guy here with significant background on art and music and some background on JS - I also played a lot of old school video games (I'm old)- currently learning how to develop levels and create sprites for a 2D game - Also learning all I can about development and programming.

looking for people who want to join in development

So far I have decided to use Unity and Photon for multiplayer - but up to discussion.

The game is a cooperative where players must band together to solve puzzles and kill mobs.

The puzzles and monsters are almost impossible - but not impossible - to solve/kill alone, so this is a multiplayer only game.

What makes this game different is that every event only occurs once, if you kill a monster he never re-spawns, if a puzzle is solved it is permanently disabled, there will be a random loot generator, for unique loot. And a log with what players have accomplished.

I have many more ideas for the game that I can explain in private, and I want to make this game on 2D because of the costs of production.

Currently looking for all kinds of developers, be artists, programmers, music or any other, even other idea guys are welcome.

If you want to join me on this ride - we may sometime in the future greenlight this together - Add me on Steam 8bitsupera (also try bitsupera if you can't finde me)

Python is slow. It's great for a lot of reasons but speed is its Achilles heel.

If speed doesn't matter for your game, like if you're making a simple-ish roguelike, then Python is fine and you can go ahead and use it. It's very popular with real programmers, because it's readable and reliable and there's tons of good tools for working with it.

good morning everyone! i have a new game to share with you guys today

from the dev who brought you such classics as:
ConsolePet https://consolepet.itch.io/console-pet

comes a new user experience that's sure to change gaming forever:
BadPong http://www.mediafire.com/download/ro35zb1anz0r4d6/BadPong

using advanced compression technology, the file size has been reduced to under 14KB
unfortunately, a side-effect of its state-of-the-artness is that is for Linux users ONLY

you probably have to chmod +x BadPong
if you don't have ncurses installed for some reason (e.g. you're a looser) then you'll have to install that

>and I guess people just compare it to an AAA title
This is literally a matter of pricing.
If you set it $40+ then yeah, it's too much and the comparisons to AAA are inevitable.
If it's $15 or less? It's just a new indie that people might wanna give a chance

It's all easier said than done though, knowing how to present your game = knowing how to sell it.

Being able to write Python will be the smallest and easiest to acquire of the skills you need to make a game. Being able to debug Python is as important, maybe more important, than being able to write it. Being able to plan your architecture, and choosing the right algorithm for each thing that needs to happen in your game, are the most important skills, and the hardest to acquire.

Python is something you can pick up in a week or so, especially given your prior experience. Go ahead and follow the tutorial, then read up on some game programming literature, then go back and try to solve the same problems again and see if you can think of better solutions than the first time around.

There's no way to reliably gauge the worth of a concept before you prototype it. Additionally, if you want people to join you, you need to prove your ability to handle a project by yourself.
Start working on this for real. Come back when you have a prototype - from that point onward, as long as you post progress here, we'll be with you every step of the way (and you'll have an easier time putting a team together).

Bad idea anon (I usually hate idea guys but you seem to have some skills so).

First of all, multiplayer only games can only be pulled by AAA companies or studios with enough Marketing funding, if a multiplayer only game fails to get massive traction on the very day of release it's pretty much doomed as there won't be anyone to play against and it will die. Could be fixed by adding AI to supplant Human players, but it would get in conflict with your 'events only occur once' mechanic, which leads to problem #2.

If things occur only once, you'll need a colossal effort to create enough content to last a couple of hours, and not only that, but it will also kill any replay value your game may have.

Problem number 3 is that you don't seem to have a clear picture of WTF you really want to do and are already trying to get a team together. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but you might disappoint people if you are so lax about the details. Also, your scope is way off for the content part, and you don't even have a scope for the rest, so you don't even know how many people you need.

I'd say code a minimal concept version of your game to test out the game mechanics and sort out all the blanks that you currently have in your plan. Your game will change and your idea might mutate into something completely different, that's not a bad thing, but right now you have absolutely nothing but 2 game mechanics.

Best of luck, don't take this as a Fuck You post, take it as a 'I believe in you, you are gonna make it, otherwise I wouldn't bother writing a reply to an idea guy'.
>>

Story and themes don't receive this much hostility if it's coming from a game dev.

Changed so that weapons fire in sequence as opposed to using whatever is available first which resulted always using the same hardpoint over and over again. Just a little nitpick i had with the system. Doesn't change the gameplay much but I'm just glad it's out of the way.

A game where you're a professional mover/appliance installer/furniture delivery guy, but you die, and you get the same job but in hell, and have to carry outlandishly large and heavy things through the yards of demons, which are trap-laden nightmarish hellscapes, and then struggle to make shit fit though a too small door. And as you earn paychecks you buy upgrades like gloves that let you carry red hot iron bed frames or boots that let you shortcut through hazards like lava, and you try to save up enough money to buy your way into heaven

Also there's a dating mini-game between levels where the office workers hit on you as you save and recover in the breakroom and loading dock at the store in hell you get assigned to

There, was that so hard?

That's something that's different for each person, so go try for yourself to figure it out.
You don't need to draw at all for 3D models. A simple flat texture and a good lighting system and shader will take care of that for you. But being able to draw well can help you to create higher quality textures for your models.

Thank you for the extensive answer! This is reassuring, I think I'll jump in soon, then.
(My flimsy grasp on on debugging and architecture will probably lead me to ask for help in various places, and do some major refactoring, respectively, but oh well, that's part of the deal.)
Do you have any reading recommendations for getting started with Python from zero, and 'game programming literature' in general? I'd like to print out some stuff and do a bit of reading when I'm away from home without internet access this weekend.

>>152277121
The simplest decent engine for 2D seems to be Game Maker (uses GML), whereas 3D has Unity (uses C#). C# is a bit harder than GML, so if you want to get started with programming/game dev 2D is easier.
>>
>>152277121
2D is easier for static images
3D is easier for lots of movement, and also for any lighting situation, and also any amount of zoom.

3D is harder to start out though, and will take more time to learn. You don't need to be amazing at 2D to make 3D, but you should know how volume of shapes work, and anatomy, stuff like that.

the only Devil's Advocate I have for your post is a drop in/drop out Transformers game where it's always online, and you just fucking walk around looking at shit as a robot, then do it faster as a jet or car or mecha-lion, and kill anything with a red name that happens to log in and is doing the same thing. You could make quests for downtime, but many people would be satisfied with just cruising around an open world as a transformer, with the possibility for random multiplayer encounters.

Of course there would be IP issues, but honestly the dosh you could make in donations with an anonymous nickname online and then just releasing it open source when a D&C letter finally manages to find its way to you years down the road would be worth it. God knows Hasbro has no fucking clue what to do with their own IP in the video game space. It could be a decade before they even know you exist

Coding for a visual novel is the smallest part. What he should come with is detailed scripts, character concept sketches, color palettes, design specifications, etc.

When you lay the ground work for something like this you should have character design/reference, all of your color palettes and example palette usage, scripting, outlines, and more.

Like I'm making a VN and here is an example of 5min sketches of the backgrounds using the saturated and washed out color palettes, pic related is the saturated. We're testing out palettes right now so we're going through a lot of sketches. We're also in the middle of the character design phase so a lot of the characters are going through iterative versions.

Asking for coding in VNs is honestly just asking for about 10% of total production. The majority of which is in art & scripting (or OST depending on the team's preference).

I'm using lateupdate and everything. Is it really that different from 2d? The game is top down, so it's barely a step up from 3d. What is happening?

I've read that rigidbodies could affect it and I should change the interpolation, but it doesn't help either. I'm using a vector3.Lerp for the follow.

>>152280804
Checked it out. If it's the SmoothFollow in the utilities then it's basically what i'm doing, except I'm only following the players X and Z positions. It's what gives me those jitters while moving

>>152281180
Tried it. Doesn't help.

My camera follow is basically

transform.position = Vector3.SmoothDamp(transform.position,targetPosition, ref velocity, dampening * Time.smoothDeltaTime);

in a lateUpdate. If I fiddle with the settings enough, I get reduced jittering, but also lose any dampening effect, and then I might aswell transform.position = target.position . Want the camera to always lag behind abit.

Maybe I should of said that first rather than a smooth following. I can get a good camera follow onto a player, but if I try and add any lerping to it, the player character jitters while moving, once it hits a point where it "pushes" the camera.

I guess i'm a literal retard if I can't even get this to work.

2D
This is coming from a 3D Modeler,

3D assets:
Cons:
>Hard to make (Although you can't compare 1:1 with 2D due to different workflow and skills required)
>Essentially learning art basics PLUS multiple specialised things to have a game ready asset (For character; modelling, UV Mapping, texturing, rigging, animation)
>Slow to build
>Being good at 2D means shit all if you try to transition to 3D if you suck at forms and handling the extra dimension

Pros:
>Reusable and cheap, one model can be animated and rendered infinitely
>You can easily cheat good results and detail with your shaders (PBR is easy and accessible as shit now, braindead retards can make a cube look realistic)
>You can achieve PHOTOREALISTIC AAA GRAPHIX WOW (But you need the knowledge)
>It's 3D, the advantages should be obvious

I spent 3 years to get myself to industry standard however, if you're not going to devote 3 years of tuition or self-study to it, good luck

2D tends to be easier by nature, because in most cases you don't deal with the extra dimension. This applies to both programming and assets, unless you're relying on a pre-made engine (which might or might not be a bitch to control depending how dynamic said engine is) Of course, it heavily depends what kind of 2D/3D gameplay we're talking about.

However, any good game requires a ton of time and polish/thought into them. By polish, I don't necessarily mean the art itself, but like fluidity of controls, attention to details on menu/cameras, how well the story (if applicable) flows together, how the item upgrades flow together, and so on.

There are so many methods and functions and variables.
This guy doing the tutorial is so boring I'm having a hard time staying awake.

Finally put health on the HUD and started playing around with a health system. Currently you can take 2 hits when you aren't possessing an enemy, but possessing an enemy gives you an additional 4 non-regenerating hits. Whenever you possess an enemy, you regenerate your base 2 health

Thoughts?

What's the easiest way to do volume control for sfx/music in GM? If I make a variable and assign a sound resource to it, will it change the volume of the var or of the sound assigned to it when I change it's gain? IE could I, for example, keep two vars, vmusic and vsound, that I assign a sound/music to every time I want to play them in order to make volume control easier?

His only lie was you could see and find other players, which could have been a planned feature at the time.

All the other stuff was mostly hype created by other people and his inability to flatout deny things that were blown out of proportion by other people/press and him giving too vague answers and descriptions, which I think was not of any mischievous or fraudulent nature, he just has a serious case of not being able to say "no", which comes with his kind of akward character.

Kind of, there is no way I can make like 20 completely modular mechs so the plan is to have one mech and make him way way more customize-able. There will be around 15 armor slots(kinda like in morrowind) and a bunch of internal slots(computer, booster, generator). Also fine-tuning and upgrading will be available.

I want to have my simulation decoupled from the actual framerate, so that you can do things like pause simulation and fast forward the simulation

I have all my simulation code stemming from one function, Game_Update()

so how can I control how this function is run?
in pseudocode:
Make (Game_Update) run every (Time.deltaTime) * (int GameSpeed);

and then GameSpeed could be set to 0 (paused game) 1 (normal speed) 2 (fast-forward) etc...

MySqli wizards, help me.

I cannot, for the love of god, get the query insertion working.

It is supposed to insert a query [username, password, email] into the server database table. Error check returns jack shit and script finishes neatly, with all the echoes being displayed on page. But nothing is entered into the database table.

database is called - game
table is called - user

table should look like this after insertion

---------------------------------------------------------------
/ id / username / password / email /
----------------------------------------------------------------
/ 0 / dude / pass / [email protected] /
----------------------------------------------------------------

"id" is incremental

Help me out.
Yea, I know, my code is not injection proof. I don't care. I want to get something working before I delve into autism land.
